This is a very mediocre steakhouse. If you get the burger, its fine. Nothing special, but cooked as ordered which is worth a star in my book. I agree with past reviews, the baked potatoes are tiny-- a poor value for the additional 2.99 charged for it. The draw of this place is only that it is in the tourist trap cowboy village called Trail Dust Town, and that if you wear a cheap tie, they will cut it off and add it to their collection on the walls. Good for young kids who don't know the difference between ordering a steak at somewhere like Fridays, Longhorn or Applebee's and ordering one at Ruth Cris, Shulas. However, the prices are still a little high for the value as far as the steak portion of the menu goes. The other items such as their pulled beef, chicken and burgers are all reasonably priced. The setting is very cute, and the restaurant is decorated very nicely but that's where it stops. I consider myself an expert on ribeye steak since I eat at least one every week. We were a party of 3 and all 3 of us agreed that the ribeye was extremely tough and loaded with grizzle. We all left more than half the steak and had them wrapped up for the dog. The dog can write his own review but I think he's going to agree. Those leftover steaks can be converted into beach sandals. Obviously they do a lot of tourist business since locals would require quality meat to keep returning. I do recommend visiting trail Dust Town however I suggest you avoid the steak and spend your money on a meal elsewhere. read more

It has been 43 years since we ate at Pinnacle Peak in Trail Dust Town. The food was as amazing and reasonable as it was back in 1970. The hospitality and friendly atmosphere in the restaurant is fantastic. We had Apache Kid as a server. If you go, ask for her and if it is your first time, ask her for the history of the restaurant. I've heard nothing but great things about this restaurant from a plethora of people around Tucson so, I was excited to try it for the first time last night. Unfortunately that was also the last time I'll ever eat there and contribute to the high praises it gets. As if the service wasn't bad enough not even the food I received was worth the long wait nor the high expense. They serve thick unheated pieces of bread with butter on the side and a bowl of prison like beans for the entire table, which not a single one of our party of 20+ people touched, to start out with. When I finally got my steak, the waiter shoved my plate to me from across the table and over my friend's head as if that's okay to serve customers their food anywhere. I didn't realize that I was literally paying $17.99 for a piece of cold steak instead of a full meal with sides so, that just added on to the frustrating experience I had there. I cannot believe you have to pay extra for a side when most places include that in your meal! To top it all off, a friend recieved a burger that was not fully cooked so the bun was soggy and red from the bleeding patty which grossed her out to the point she didn't even want to eat after that. At the end of dinner I really wanted to talk to the manager but, I was so pissed that I genuinely would have cried from anger that I really spent $30 on a piece of steak and a drink when I could have gone to Longhorn Steak House or something along those lines and got quality service and a full hot meal for that price. I hated coming here as a teenager with my family. I thought it was cheesy and stupid and I didn't care for the food either. Now that I'm an adult and enjoy spending time with my grandparents and younger relatives, I can see the appeal of this place. My grandparents love it and my younger cousins really like it as well. It's still kind of cheesy, and make sure you don't wear a tie (or do if you want it cut off), but it's a good family place. read more

Heard rave reviews about this place so we gave it a try. The restaurant was clean and had a fun western theme. Our server was personable and prompt. Our meal started with a salad that was straight from the bag, somewhat dried out, had 1 cherry tomato, a few tasteless croutons and nothing else. The dressing was just ok. The bread was bland and served with margarine I think. We ordered the cowboy and cowgirl steaks. They were only lukewarm, beans were cool and tasted like they were canned. Pinnacle Peak is a Tucson staple. If you live there or travel there....you must GO there for dinner. Not only is it a fun place for the whole family but the food is SO Good. The steal my family and I ate were all delicious and cooked how we ordered. We even brought my boyfriend and his mom who are both from Chicago, and they loved the food! I first went to Pinnacle Peak's as a college student in 1964. Due to inflation, the delicious $3 steak now costs $22, but it was still just as tasty as I remembered. The 1971 fire probably consumed the original red checked oilcloth table covers and ceiling-dripping ties, but they have been more than adequate replaced by newer versions. Does anyone wear ties anymore? I admit the 4 stars may reflect nostalgia, but our server Billy The Kid was excellent. Food was hot and served so fast we had barely finished the salad. My friend and I visited Tucson overnight to make a day trip to Bisbee. On our way back into Tucson this afternoon, we were tired but my friend wanted a steak and I wanted seafood. Our resort recommended Pinnacle Peak (which we have in Scottsdale). My friend's mesquite grilled sirloin was really good she said for $14.00. Her salad was tiny and neither of us ate the watery-looking cowboy beans. Halfway through my thick 8 ounce salmon fillet, I noticed it was really "pink" like undercooked. I called our waiter over and showed him. He offered to re-do it, but by that time I was grossed out! My husband and I lived in South FL for ten years before moving to Chandler in '98, so we know how to cook salmon. The waiter comped my $19.00 salmon dinner luckily. I was not impressed with Pinnacle Peak, but very glad my friend really enjoyed her sirloin. Very hard to find. Guy on phone gave us terrible directions. read more

My husband said his ribs were good but were lacking a rich flavor. He ordered mac and cheese because the server bragged about how good it was. It was edible and just okay. Our salads were smaller than in the past, wilted, and dressings were watery. My Gardener's meatless dish was a small dish of roasted vegetables covered with two large mounds of mashed potatoes, and at $13.99 I certainly wouldn't order that again! I realize this is a steakhouse but a good menu even at a steakhouse should have something attractive and fresh, yes fresh, on the menu for those with dietary restrictions. Went to the restaurant on a recommendation from my hotel. Ambiance was cute with Trail Dust town being a recreated old western town with shops, saloon and a train around it. Watched the stunt show and it was funny and entertaining. That was when the good part of the experience ended. Ate a cowgirl steak and mashed potatoes and it was blah. I could cook a better steak at home myself! Mashed potatoes were overpriced at $2.99 for a side dish and you are only given one scoop for that price. Pricey too as only got a steak, two slices of thick Wonder bread, a small salad with iceburg lettuce and baked beans for $21. Salad should at least be better quality and use mixed greens. Overall disappointed with the meal and wouldn't go back nor recommend others go there to eat. read more

Effects of consuming the steak, beans and salad were just like the preparation used for rectal examination. Best steak ever...I never go to Tucson without going to the pinnacle...first went in 1988, then 1999...2005...2010...never had a bad steak there...my parents frequented it in the 60's and I heard stories my whole life about how great it was...it is far from pricey as some reviews have called it.. I've spent more money at KFC...for the best steak ever it is very cheap! If you go to Tucson and don't stop at the pinnacle you are going to miss out on a great steak!!! read more

When my party asked for three Cowgirl Steaks (smaller version of Cowboy) they did not have any. The staff did not offer any any alternative like perhaps cutting the Cowboy in two. Let me start by saying we came here for Mother's Day dinner. We waited over an hour (no big deal because there's a million things to do while you wait- and again it's Mother's Day). When we finally get seated at one half of a 16 person table (they later seated another party right there at the same table like right next to us?) 6 of us ordered either cowgirl or cowboy steaks. My sister ordered the filet. My cowboy came out well done around the edges and rare in the middle. The other steaks came out nearly perfect. Salads are very plain but not bad. The ranch dressing is pretty good. The beans have improved since the last time we came here, which is a relief. They passed around free desserts for Mother's Day which was adorable and very nice. No tie cutting, or balloon lady to be seen and those were my favorite as a kid. Our waiter Al was awesome. He's the reason I feel like it really deserves 4-5 stars. We came for my mother's birthday and the food was pretty good and the Buenos Noches coffee is excellent. That said, the rest of the restaurant needs some help. See, I used to work in a steakhouse and I know very well that the experience is (or should be) holistic in a positive way. The first word that comes to mind is plastic. The table was not set when we arrived and their hasty preparations included plastic water classes, bread basket and table cloth. And speaking of breadbasket, a slice of Wonder bread is hardly the pinnacle of fine appetizer. There weren't many to choose from. Same goes for wines and the waiter had not been afforded the most basic sommelier instructions that I have seen most establishments of high caliber take pride in. The waiter was pleasant, efficient and willing to please but I noticed he had a rose tattoo on his chest about three seconds before I wondered why I was seeing his chest to begin with. He forgot to bring bread plates (among other things) and was too hasty to list tonights "specials" or hear my grandmother's dessert order. I'm not blaming him, but rather the managers who have been obviously lax and negligent. The food was pretty tasty, but no effort was afforded to its aesthetic presentation. I used to love this place years ago but it's really gone down hill. The last three times I went there my steak wasn't even close to being good and one time it was half fat and gristle. Yeah you're probably asking "why would you go back three times to something you didn't like?" And simply put, I guess I was just hoping it was a fluke each time. But alas no more. In spite of the reviews, I decided to give it a try. Sorry I went there. I ordered a filet which had to be butterflied because it is so thick that it would take a long time to cook. When I got it, the steak was cooked to order but it was grizzly and tough. The backed beans looked and tasted as if they had been poured out of a can - soupy and no particular flavor. The homemade bread was like thick slices of Wonder bread. I had the server remove my plate and take the charge off the bill. I have lived in Tucson for over 40 years and have visited Pinnacle Peak on several occasions through the years. At one it was one of the best steak houses I had ever tried, and the prices were reasonable. Tonight we were greatly disappointed. Our son-in -law wanted to take us out for dinner there because it had been years since he dined there. The prices are outrageous for what you get. Our cowboy steak was not nearly as large as they used to be and was tough and full of gristle. The bread is not good. At one time they had a really good bread. The beans were ok, but not as flavorful as I remember them. The one good thing I can say, is that the service we got from Belle Star was excellent. What happened Pinnacle Peak? I just moved to Tucson from LA. Many years ago I had been to the Pinnacle Peak in Phoenix and really enjoyed it, so I thought I would take my boyfriend to the one in Tucson to see if my memory held up. Unfortunately, we were both disappointed. We knew it was kitschy, but the waiters were barely going through the motions, not having any fun in their cowboy costumes. I expected them to sell their characters, but they just seemed bored. The food was just average, especially considering the prices (we paid $20.99 for the half-portion of the Cowboy steak, a 14 oz. New York strip). The steaks were served with thick slices of cold white bread (inedible), an iceberg lettuce salad that looked like it was two days old, and a "family style" bowl of beans that were not as good as Bush's canned; baked potato (underdone) was extra. Our steaks were served just barely warm, and mine was rare when I had ordered medium. We were not asked if we were satisfied, because it was clear that our waiter couldn't have cared less. The steak, though, was tasty, which is the only reason I am giving this a two-star review. Even my iced tea was bad, brewed with local water which is full of minerals, but when I asked for a Diet Coke they said "Is RC okay?" which it most certainly is not. I would not recommend this place unless you have young children or are tourists who really enjoy the old west thing. Otherwise, the sooner places like this close, the better. Stick to chains like Long Horn. You get a much better meal and serving experience for your $60 for two. read more
