This is a hidden gem in Chicago. Currently, the sidewalk in front of the restaurant is filled with scaffolding and construction signs, but it is worth the hunt to find it. My husband and I ended up doing breakfast here both mornings we were in town and both times the food was amazing and the price was a bargain. This is not fancy. It is good old fashion diner food. It is fast and clean and delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is classic diner right down to the stools at the bar. read more

I work in the area and am sad to say I will not be coming back here. Had to order my carry out for lunch because I was in between appointments at work and had something change in my schedule so I was able to eat there. I ended up asking the girl if I could stay and she said no problem pick anywhere to sit. I did and then another lady came up and said I was not able to sit and eat because I ordered carry out. She proceeded to tell me she would let me just this once but she would have to put my food on a plate. She took my food and when she came back decided to again give me a hard time for staying. I asked her why it would matter and she didn't give me a very good reason. I had to get a to go box anyways again which seems like a waste! I unfortunately won't be coming back here anymore just because I felt she was very rude. read more

Stopped in at 10-ish on a Wednesday on the way to the Art Institute. The ambiance is a bit odd but not off putting. The French toast and biscuits with sausage gravy was very good. The cafe is very old school with seating in the atrium, deemed "one of the loveliest ever designed by the firm" by architectural historian Sally Chappell. The atrium is five stories high and embellished with marble and brass. It's perfect for breakfast and lunch for locals as well as visitors from out-of-town. The menu is classic with breakfast served throughout the day. It's an optimal choice for breakfast if you prefer a relaxed and quiet atmosphere. Lunch, on the other hand, is usually bustling with the work crowd. I had the "chef's recommend" which is basically two cooked eggs, two sausage links, hash brown, and toast. I ended up at Pittsfield Cafe during one of my mornings in Chicago. This is located within the Pittsfield Building. It's a tiny diner but don't let the size fool you. They have 80's songs playing and you get the feel of a small town diner. We got two coffees, Eggs Benedict, and a Mediterranean Omelet. The omelet was ginormous and so good! It had olives, feta, gyro meat, tomatoes, and spinach. The hash browns that were served on the side were perfectly done. The hollandaise sauce on the Benedict was to die for. Our server was just perfect. She kept our coffee filled and was prompt with us. Most importantly, our bill was cheap! There aren't many places you can find prices like these in the Loop. I will make this a mandatory stop the next time I return to Chicago. read more

What a wonderful place to kick back and listen to 80s music while indulging on some warm and savory breakfast food! People are friendly and willing to make your experience the best. My Avocado Benedict was outSTANDING!!! The poached egg was just the right consistency and mixed well with Hollandaise sauce and hash browns. Just wow! It was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the ambiance. It can get a bit loud but the rocking music of Stevie Nicks complimented the atmosphere beautifully. So we are in the lobby of this building which was perfectly comfortable. The food is average - breakfast lunch American fare. The real reason I wanted to comment on this place at all is the bathroom, which is downstairs. It was open for me (I have read that you need to get a key from the desk but not the case for me this day). However- the basement and bathroom in particular is THE creepiest spot I have ever experienced and there was so much bad energy down there that it was overwhelming. HAUNTED! Not kidding. Others on here commented on it and none of it is an exaggeration. Bad bad things have happened in that basement. Things that still exist or still linger. read more

The cafe is located inside a building that seems to be under construction. The seating area reminds you of an outdoor European cafe which is nice, and the staff was nice. However the food was subpar and the menu was limited. Most items like grits weren't served after 11. I got the red velvet French toast which was red velvet cake dipped in egg and filled to the brim with cream cheese. I didn't find the taste or texture pleasant. I also found some of the prices to be outrageous. We paid $6 for orange juice that tasted like it came out of a machine. The water had a weird taste and the cups had a weird odor. Food was fine. I'll forgive the little plastic cup for syrup or whatever that was floating in my coffee cup -- must have fallen in the cup and because it's clear, the waiter didn't notice. My friend forgives the waitress who was too busy fixing her eye makeup at the back wall mirror rather than bring my friend's side. What I won't forgive is calculating the suggest tip amounts on food/drink AND tax. Major pet peeve. While it wasn't that much ($.38 in my case) and I tend to overtip anyhow, it's the principle. This quant little mom and pop cafe that is really a small diner with about 14 small tables or booths and 7 then 6 stools at the 2 small coffee counters inside and about 16 French outdoor cafe styles tables outside. (You are not literally not outside you are in the Atrium of the beautiful historic Pittsfield building.) The customer service is Excellent from Bobby the owner who is so pleasant and treats you as if you are a guest in his own home to the busboys and wait staff. The restaurant is very clean and the food is always delicious. I love sitting at the counter like years ago. They also have egg Skillets that are wonderful and all portions are very Hardy and they will change or make anything you like. The ambiance is so special and it's like going back in time. They have soft jazz playing and any time I have ever come here I have never seen drama among the employees. This family has owned this restaurant for 30 years. I love coming here even if its just to get coffee that I make myself. They are closed on Sundays and Saturday only open 6am-3pm. During the week 6am-5pm Come and check out this delightful little place of long ago with lots of history hidden in the middle of the big city. read more

I've walked by Pittsfield for at least 15 years and never once visited until recently. A friend and I felt like breakfast and we were kind of wandering down Wabash and Yelp pointed us right to Pittsfield. Prepare to step into an architectural dream when you enter this building! If you enter on Wabash, a short hallway leads you into a giant art deco atrium. I have been getting my hair done in the building next door since 2001 and I really am shocked that I've never ventured in here, even just to check out the building. The view of the atrium is gorgeous and you can even sit "al fresco" at Pittsfield in the atrium itself. The menu is big and everything is relatively inexpensive, which is shocking considering this restaurant is right in the middle of the really expensive Loop. I got a full breakfast (eggs, hash, bacon, toast) plus a coffee for $10. Delicious! Everything was cooked the way I wanted, service was good, and the food came out quickly. We were in and out in about 45 minutes which was perfect for breakfast. They have tons of seating so you'll likely find a table even during the lunch rush. It looks like the serve breakfast all day but they have lunch and entree options too. Obviously there's no parking to speak of outside so you'd have to do valet or the train. Definitely worth a visit especially for the price if you're looking for a good diner meal right in the Loop. read more

FOOD: I ordered the veggie lovers scramble and stuck with water. The omelette was good. Good proportion of veggies, cheese, and egg. Not too much veggie, not too few. The hashbrowns seemed fresh as well, they were very hot when the came out, and not too greasy. They seem to be fresh cut here, because the hash brown pieces were uneven, unlike when they come out of a bag. I heard the guy next to me telling the waitress that this is one of the only places that knows how to cook a medium egg to a true medium. Not runny and not hard. I like Pittsfield Cafe. It's the only real diner-y breakfast or lunch spot that's open on the weekends in the area. They have all your typical breakfast dishes: eggs, pancakes, french toast, hash browns, etc. So far everything I've had has been pretty good, except for the corned beef hash. I really like corned beef hash and was really looking forward to it here. It was really just some corned beef added to hash browns. The omelettes are consistently good. The "inside" dining area is exactly what you'd expect from a diner. The "outside" dining area is actually inside, it's in the lobby of the Pittsfield building. It's a historic building and very pretty. Either option is a good one. Although, inside there are tv's, if you're looking for something to watch while you eat. The service is always really good. Seriously this place gets five stars? We waited a reasonable ten minutes for a table and from there it went down hill ...slowly! The place was busy on a Sunday morning but it took twenty minutes for a server to show up and she was amicable and took our order but then the wait began and did we wait! Forty minutes for our food to arrive however the toast did arrive fifteen minutes before the entrees. The food was okay but nothing special but typical dumber fare. The wait staff are trying very hard but there is simply not enough cooks to cope with the orders and get the food out. The owners need to get the kitchen staff some help.
