This place never disappoints! Today I went with my father, husband, and 1 year old son. It was suppertime, however the restaurant was not too busy. Upon arrival we were asked if we wanted a high chair and I responded yes we did. We were placed at a table so a chair could be moved to make a spot for the high chair. When the employee brought the high chair he asked me to wait because he wanted to get a rag to wipe the chair off as he didn't like how it looked. This really impressed me. It just had some crumbs on it, but he took the time to wipe it off for us. Our party ordered a calzone, a sub sandwich, and a flatbread sandwich. All came out promptly, hot and delicious. This is one of our favorites downtown and my relatives from out of town always ask to come here to eat When they visit. Awesome job! Keep up the great food and service. read more

Unfortunately I was very disappointed in the pizza. It definitely wasn't the best deep dish I've had. I didn't even finish the pizza, nor did I get it to go. That's unheard of!! Pizza is my most favorite food. I never leave pizza on a plate. I did however love the salad. It was fresh and crisp! The salad dressing was also flavorful. I would come back just for the salad. The pizza not so much. The customer service was a little shoddy too I wasn't greeted at all when I came in. I just kinda walked around till I was approached. Came in on a Friday night, waited a least 10 minutes for a hostess to tell us to sit anywhere. Ordered. Received our drinks fairly quickly. The mixed drinks weren't very good. Had to ask the waitress to wipe down our sticky table. Waited 45 minutes for a deep-dish Chicago-style pizza, which was the reason why we chose to go to PizzaPapalis. The crust tasted like it came out of a can, the cheese was nearly flavorless, and the most unfortunate part is the pizza looked amazing and we were ready to eat! The disappointment was real. From experience, Digornio's frozen pizza tastes better. At least the crust will rise. The minestrone soup was extremely salty, and was more like a slightly watered down tomato paste with vegetables. Salad was better than expected. The prices were higher than expected but apparently were justified due to the restaurant's proximity to the Mud Hen's field and the Huntington Center. Parking is pretty bad, but after seeing 4 stars on Yelp, we made a serious effort only to be let down. Tragic. read more

I wonder how this place stays in business. We were there Sunday Nov 3rd at about 3:30. We were going to grab a bite before the Walleyes. They weren't very busy. Maybe half of the tables empty. Firstly, it took the waitress a long time to get to our table for drink orders. She actually was very elusive during the whole experience. We place our orders and wait. And wait. After almost a half hour my son's kids nuggets and fries comes out as well as my spaghetti. The kids meal is what you'd expect, but I didn't expect to be served canned spaghetti. If that wasn't Chef Boyardee, I don't know what it was! That is exactly as it tasted. The meatballs on it were good, though. I have three more people in our party waiting for their food. Five to ten minutes later two of the pizza orders come up. They were thinner crusts and not deep dish. Those were actually pretty good, except that my son ordered extra sauce and it looked like they put light sauce on instead. I wasn't about to complain because the waitress was near impossible to find to flag down. So we're waiting on a calzone for my husband. You wouldn't think it would take any longer for a pizza as it's the same thing, just folded. Waitress says it's coming out soon. Twenty minutes later we are finished eating and I'm asking for the check because we need to get to the game. Guess what? We STILL hadn't gotten the calzone!! It's bad enough that all the orders came out at different times, but baffling and completely unacceptable that a calzone took AN HOUR!! The waitress, once I flagged her down, did take it off the bill. Poor service, poor to mediocre food, and extreme wait times for food when not even very busy. And at least try to bring everyone's orders at roughly the same time. I'd never go there again--not even if the meal were free. That's how disappointing Pizza Papalis is. read more

My friends and I -- severely deprived of artery clogging cheesy and meaty goodness -- stopped in Pizza Papalis, hoping to put an end in our quest for the best pizza in Toledo. Sure, it's a chain. Forget the fact that each slice is served with a generous side of Lipitor. Pizza Papalis serves its purpose quite well: shelling out 1.5 inch thick pies... err... pizzas. And that, [Toledo] Yelpers, is all that matters. Pizza Papalis is no Giordanos, but it's a reasonable facsimile of proper Chicago pizzas. I'm also not going to lie; my standards have lowered considerably upon moving to Toledo. The downside to this pizza chain is its wait time: 45 - 50 minutes for a deep dish pizza. Now, folks who know me will tell you that patience is not my virtue. But for these slices of heaven? I'll make it an exception. Unless you're keeling over from starvation the moment you enter Pizza Papalis, I would highly recommend skipping appetizers. The eight of us ordered a large deep dish VIP pizza, a large thin crust VIP pizza, a large thin crust spinach special pizza, and a small deep dish low fat cheese pizza. I'll give you one guess as to who ordered the last one. The grand total for the four aforementioned pizzas and seven sodas was an astronomical $91+, a new record for most expensive pizzas I've had to date. So, in addition to the long wait time, the prices are not exactly cheap. What makes this place worthwhile and the pies worth every penny, however, is the sheer fact that the makers do not skimp on the ingredients. A small deep dish does indeed feed 2-3 hungry folks. Half of my party walked away with enough leftovers for at least another meal. Mind you, my party consisted of six guys and two girls -- all with huge appetites. Additionally, the pizza crusts here are legendary. Thick, flaky, hearty, and laced with hints of cinnamon, it complements the big cheesy glob quite nicely. Lastly, my friends were unable to tell the difference between the low fat pizza and the regular pizza, since both tasted amazing to say the least. As a caveat, check the Mudhens game schedule prior to heading here. On a game night, you will not only be vying for parking spots but for parking spots at inflated rates too. read more

This is the go-to place for the masses for food before the game at the Mud Hen's stadium. This said, though, this is definitely not the place to go if you're in a hurry. Be fully prepared to wait an absolute minimum of 45 minutes for the deep dish pizzas. We've eaten here three times and the wait for deep dish has ranged from 45 minutes to 1.5hrs! To make the wait a bit better, however, you can pre-order your deep dish to get it started before you get to your table while the restaurant has a wait for tables. To also note, however, even if you are NOT getting deep dish, the food takes a very very long time to cook. We've never received cold food, however, so it seems like it's not a server issue. The food has really good flavor in general - our group hasn't gotten anything that has warranted a complaint. The deep dish pizza is definitely the best, however. If you're getting deep dish, you need to order at LEAST a size smaller than if you were ordering from Domino's because of the height size difference. Two people can easily be satisfied with a small, and a medium for two people is enough for leftovers for at least one more meal for both people. With that fact, however, the price is much higher than a medium Domino's (actually is more than a large at most places). The restaurant is split into two levels in an old warehouse building so it's a great kind of old-meets-new ambiance. It's really open and the lower portion has garage doors that can open to the outside (we've never been there when they have had them open, but it'd definitely be a really nice addition to dinner!) All in all, if you're a fan of deep dish pizza, or are questioning if you would like it or not, try it out - definitely worth it! read more

The atmosphere and the location are great. The pizza? Well... First off, the sauce is pretty good...I'll give 'em that. But pizza-wise, it's downhill from there. Their Chicago style pizza? Take a loaf of bread, throw some cheese on it, cover it with pizza sauce. Bake it for 45 minutes, and there ya go. The crust on their thin crust pizza? If it's not frozen I'll eat my hat. It's perfectly round, has a seem around the circumference, and breaks apart when you eat it. I might eat here if I'm with a group, or I might have a drink here (excellent bar staff), but if I want good pizza, there are about 25 places in Toledo where I'll go first. read more

Really want to give this 5 stars but man there are just a few things that stop me. But let's start with the good things. The pizza is great. Sauce is awesome and the crust is even better. Nice little beer selection as well. There's this big ole cocktail there that seems to be enough for 4 people that is always ordered by someone in the group. The wait they say is at least 45 minutes per pie but we got ours out pretty quick. The atmosphere is fun especially when there's a hens game going on later. There are a couple negatives however. You definitely gotta pre-tum before this place cause you will (emphasis) have heartburn after eating this pizza. It is not a question of if, but a question of when. Also the chairs are the most uncomfortable pieces of wood I have ever sat on. Actually dined here 12/27/15 after the Harlem Globe Trotters game at Huntington Center. Never having been here before, I really loved the amazing warehouse building with the soaring ceilings and exposed brick, really fantastic interior. If we only had cool buildings like this out west. Really love that Toledo is utilizing these amazing downtown spaces to create cool restaurants and bars. Way to go Glass City! Not surprising, there was a 45 minute wait which turned out to be in our favor as this establishment has the excellent concept of being able to order your pie at the counter in the back as you wait. Brilliant! So after we were seated, our pizza was delivered about 5 minutes later. Score! I'm not a fan of Chicago deep dish, but was pleasantly surprised at the nice flavors and the chewy, but tender crust. The sauce had a solid tomato tang and wasn't too salty. Overall a pretty good pizza. We were seated in the back bar area on the first level and found our server to be friendly, helpful, and added a nice touch of good service to our experience. read more

We waited around 20 minutes, which is what they said we would. We preordered our pizza, which was great because if anyone knows about dining with a baby and a 3 year old, waiting is not their forte. The waitress was awesome. I wish I could remember her name because I'd call her out. She was attentive, friendly and great with our kids. She gets 5 stars. The pizza was alright. I am going to be a tad bias... We go to Chicago a couple of times a year and get pizza. This is pretty good pizza, but I have to admit, I was jealous of the people that got the thin crust. Now, I am a biased reviewer because I am employed there, but I believe I can write a review that actually is worth its salt more so than someone else because I know the quality and effort that is put into the food there. The pizza, at first glance of the menu, is a little pricey. However, the ingredients are incredible. We definitely do not skimp on any single product. Everything is made in house, including the salad dressings and the multitude of sauces. The ground beef has a fat ratio of something like 90/10. That in and of itself says a lot about the quality of food. The sausage is ground, not the frozen cubes you find at the majority of other pizza joints. We also make our own deep dish cookies and deep dish cheesecakes. They are absolutely amazing. When it comes to the dining experience, the process is ingenious. If there is a wait, you place your order, and then by the time you sit down at your table your food comes out right away or within 5 minutes. The table turnover is extremely high which is good for the business and for the customer. A small pizza can feed 2-3 people, a medium 4-5 and a large 6-7. Personally I am filled up with just 1 to 1 1/2 slices of deep dish pizza. The actual restaurant itself is very family friendly and the decor is sports bar oriented with lots of class. We have two floors, each of which has a bar with garage door style windows that we open up on the nicer days. Also, we have live music Thursday thru Saturday. Come in Monday thru Wednesday and domestic drafts are $1, and Wednesdays kids eat free. read more

My co-workers and I make Pizza Papalis a regular stop in our downtown lunch rotation. We don't generally have time for a deep-dish pizza (although we could call ahead and have one ready when we arrive), but we've all tried multiple menu items and have enjoyed them. Stromboli, calzone, thin-crust pizza, philly steak or chicken sub, any of the personal-size flatbread pizzas... no complaints. We've only ever had one bad experience there (a hair baked into a Spicy Chicken Stromboli), and the staff made it right by comping my co-worker's meal AND giving him a $10 gift card for his next visit. The staff are generally friendly and relatively quick, and attentive without being annoyingly so. The quality and price of the food are what keeps us coming back, though. read more

We ended up getting a large for 4 people and had lots of pizza left over because it was so filling. Make sure you understand the pizza takes 45 minutes. The waitress wasn't that great. Since we were in any rush, we went for the deep dish pizza and having had Chicago pizza, I'd say this is a pretty good version. Pete the bartender is AMAZING!!! He made our day!!! He put our bumper sticker up from where we are from. It's a bumper sticker from "hair of the dog" English pub from Palm Springs, Ca. It meant SO much to us. Come to find out, Pete also lived and worked in Palm Springs at one time and used to frequent that bar. Of course we all hit it off and we had a GREAT time!!! Location: The location is great if you're downtown for an event. They have an upstairs with excellent window seating and second-level balcony that is open when the weather is nice. Try to get seated on the second floor! Food: Meh, the food is OK. We usually get a thin crusted pizza and it's good, but there are definitely better pizza places in the area. I once ordered pasta and I highly recommend that you STAY AWAY from it. It was so bad that I had to send it back. The service: It's been hit-or-miss for us. Pizza Papalis is absolutely my favorite pizza in the Northwest Ohio region. Specifically, the deep dish pizza. I've had the opportunity to travel throughout the country and try a lot of "famous" pizzerias. This is certainly up there on the list. The first noticeable attribute of this pizza is not just the thickness, but the density and amount of toppings. It is loaded with cheese, sauce, and whatever toppings you get. The final product is heavy! Secondly, the quality of every ingredient used is noticeable from the very first bite. It's something difficult to describe, but certainly makes a difference in the overall taste. Finally, the beer is served in a frosty mug. It is extremely cold and goes well with whatever it is you order. It is right next to Fifth Third Field, Home of the Toledo Mud Hens. Pizza, beer, and baseball is a beautiful combination. The wife wanted Chicago deep dish pizza as soon as we got to the Midwest. Toledo isn't Chicago, but the pizza was good. We ordered a deep dish medium with chicken on it. It was enormous, dense, and delicious. We had to take half of it home. We also ordered the breadsticks, which were fine. They came with a decent marinara sauce and a gross orange cheese sauce. They're on the side. You're going to need to order appetizers because the pizza takes about 45 minutes to cook. That's how long it takes to make right, so just get used to it. Parking is tough. There's a garage across the street that charged me $3 on a Sunday (not a game day), but we had to climb six flights of stairs after eating all that pizza. A decent beer selection, a friendly waitress, and a nice old fashioned pizzeria decor make this a place I'll come back to. read more

After having a bad service experience the first time we decided to give this place another try. Mainly because the pizza was so good and the manager cared enough to respond to our review. This time we had the very best service and pizza. We were greeted immediately, asked where we would like to sit, and our server Shea (sp?) was friendly. She introduced herself and was knowledgeable about the menu. She kept our drinks full the entire time. Once again the pizza was delicious. It is truly the best pizza in Toledo. I recommend not going during peak hours because the line will be out the door. But that's because it's that good. I am glad I did not let one bad experience keep us from going back.
