Got takeout today, not at all happy with the changes. I'm a customer of many years, probably close to 20 and I've seen Pizzaioli go through a lot of flux and changes. This weekend my husband and I thought we would treat ourselves to our favorite tomato basil bisque soup and salad, and split a pasta dish; we chose the chicken tortellini. 1. The salad had that weird gassy smell that happens when the lettuce is not so fresh. 2. The soup, which has always had the flavor and consistency of a lovely sauce; thick, creamy, full of flavor had clearly been burnt at some point. Maybe the bottom of the pot scorched - I don't know but it was not edible. 3. The chicken tortellini now has vegetable tortellini in it where it didn't before - not a terrible thing except for the slight overcooked veggie aroma, but the worst part is that on top of there being barely any heat in it from the jalapeño, what used to be a rich buttery sauce has been replaced with something that is closer to a basic bechamel sauce that while it has butter and parm, it also has a good deal of flour and milk which drastically reduces that saucy cheesy decadence. 4. Bread and bruschetta used to come with the meal. In the restaurant they would serve it to all customers and refills were always an option. Now? You have to buy the bruschetta and then they tell you that they will "throw in some bread for ya". So, $75.43 later, we were left with a very disappointing soup, salad and shared pasta dish experience. We don't do take out often since COVID and when we do it's a treat; both in change of pace and not having to cook. Even after the many years we've been eating at Pizzaioli, I don't think we will be going back. So just two stars, and one of them is in memory of the old days. I just told you that my salad was past its freshness window, and that the soup had been burnt. I've loved that soup for years and I know when it's made well. Are you telling me that if I were sitting in your restaurant and brought these things up to the server that I they would respond to me as you have which is In essence, "Rotten luck, nothing to be done about it - better luck next time!"..? If you were really sincere, you would offer a refund, or you would offer the opportunity to go pick up that same meal another day at no cost when it was made well. I had a wonderful time at this restaurant, the waitstaff was beyond amazing and the food phenomenal! Teddy was incredible with the service, honestly he is a big part of what makes this place so amazing and charming. One downfall though, the people sitting next to us outside brought a dog. It was not a service dog, it did not have the outfit or service dog behavior. It was incredibly obnoxious to have it barking constantly over our meal, we came out for a relaxing and calm night out. Thankfully the service made up for it! Not sure why they would allow people to bring their pets (non service dogs) to annoy the other tables, blew my mind it was tolerated for over an hour that we were there. We will definitely be back but hoping we do not run into entitled people bringing their dogs they are able to leave at home. read more

1st time visit, highly recommended by locals. The girls working the front, didn't seem to know how to multi task. We were not acknowledged right away & were just standing there for 10 mins before getting help. We ordered bread, which was cold & the butter was so cold you couldn't spread it. Thank goodness for sitting next to the warmers. Waitress was good and attentive, but our entrees took forever. Also, no one explained that we could scan a QR code for drink options until we had to ask about other drinks. The dessert was good too. Overall, good food & decent service. Been here 3 occasional times because my wife loves the Chicken Tortellini and it's the nearest Italian restaurant by my place. The food is okay not the best. I've been to many Italian restaurants and I must say this place doesn't even make it in my top 10. It's also pretty pricey for an average Italian food. I don't mind paying over priced meals if the taste and quality is up there. But this place is pretty much comparable to an Olive Garden. Why a 4? Well the service was great, and like I said the food was okay not bad so I still enjoyed it. The establishment was clean and they offer outdoor seatings. Tucked away on the backside of a row of strip malls and larger stores (like Home Depot), is one of the better non-chain restaurants in the Chino area. It's definitely not a fast-food or casual, despite it's location, it's a real place. It's not fancy, but nice indeed. Featuring a large menu of Italian standards and specials, with above average prices. The centerpiece of Pizzaioli is the large, woody, L-shaped Bar. Divided into 2 areas, the bar side has about a dozen-ish stools and a 15 or so 4-seat tables, while a second room has all tables, better suited to accomodate larger parties, if needed. The outside patio is quite nice, but sits with a view of the parking lot. Still, on a nice day or warm evening, I think it would be a plus. The service is casual yet professional, and definitely caters to locals. Warm, fresh bread is served upon arrival, and served with a small cup of bruschetta. Garlicky, the tomatoes gave it away that it was likely a day old, as they begun to turn translucent...as they always after diced or sliced. Not a problem, per say, because it was still very tasty (and free!). The menu choice made it tough to decide. My local companion recommended the filet, but on this particular evening -- I felt more like having fish. With several specials and regular items to choose from, I opted for a special: pan-seared rock cod in a mild puttanesca sauce atop pasta. The cod was cooked perfectly, still moist, and nicely seasoned with a very very light batter. We (my wife and two teen daughters) visit Pizzaioli at least once a month and always receive great service and food. The resturant is always well staffed and extremely clean. Ohhhh, how I love this place. I've been a few times. It was my birthday so my kids brought me here. I ordered the charcuterie platter and the cioppino. Both were wonderful! 3 meats and 3 cheeses, with nuts and cranberries, delicious! My first time have cioppino, yes! OMG sooo good, full of seafood. The red sangria was also good. Heavy seasoning so be careful. Steak - Nice prime meat. Lots of seasoning so if thats your thing then the steak is delicious. However, if heavy seasoning is your thing, why waste so much money on prime meat? When you can buy crappy meat. You won't taste the difference due to the seasoning. Pizza: Pastrami. Very good. Lots of meat. Margharita (Veggie) - Basically thin bread with stuff on top. Overall, the pizzas were nice. They were light. I forgot what else i tasted. Outside patio is cigar smoker heaven. Italian or American foods, in my opine, with some sweet red or rose wine compliments cigars better than any other food combo out there (of course the cigar in itself is applicable). Came here for dinner around 8:15 on a Sunday. Hours posted on Yelp say they close at 9:30, but the teenage wait staff didn't hesitate to rush us out the door. Food was good, but the service left a sour taste in our mouths. As soon as our dinner arrived (literally 5 minutes in) our server and bus boy brought us our check and boxes to take the food to go. When we asked for refills they put it in to go cups. I was trying to enjoy a nice dinner with my mother but was ultimately embarrassed by the treatment from staff. Paid over 80 dollars for two pasta dishes & salad... This restaurant should recognize people go out to eat, not just for the food but for the overall experience... we will not be returning :/ read more

It was my first time going here with a friend because we heard chatter about it and wanted to try it. Entering the restaurant felt like pretty fancy because of the interior design of it and how the wines are being displayed. Also the the furniture really brought out the Italian the of vibe and I really like it was structured. I got the pizza and it was really fulfilling and good. The waiter was super nice and allowed me to add marinara sauce in addition and in my opinion, it made it better. I do have to admit that the price is pretty pricey though. Everything was going great but a suggestion I do have to add is having the waiter pay attention because I waited a good amount of time to get their attention for the check. The meal was great but desert made it worse for me because of the quality of the creme brulee. It felt like it was taken out of the fridge and served. The entrees was really tasty but the desert made me give the restaurant a lower review. I do recommend this if you are celebrating because it is quite expensive but I hope the next time I do go, the two concern I have gets addressed. read more

We've been coming here for over 23 years, and I'm finally writing a review. Most of these impressions, sadly, are new ones. But the restaurant has been our "go to" place when wanting a nice, higher end meal in Chino Hills for as long as we've lived here. It's stunning that there is so little competition for a privately owned upscale place in our growing community, but that's why Pizzaioli is a very popular place. They SERIOUSLY need to consider making some changes, however. First the positive: Food is universally wonderful! Their weekly specials usually make me desire ALL of them. Sadly, the menu has been scaled wayyyy back since the pandemic, and as popular as they are, I wish they would go back to a more extensive one. But the food here is the best by far of ANY restaurant in the surrounding area. (Five Stars for the food!!) They also have an excellent wine list of very decently priced selections, and nightly "specials" of no corkage fee, things like that. Service has improved dramatically in recent years. It was never "bad" and the people have always been wonderful and super friendly. But oftentimes it felt like there wasn't a standard of training in place, so the service could be very inconsistent . Answering the phone, especially, seems to have a sense of disorder at times, but the people they hire are always great. (3-1/2 stars for the service) The owners are ALL very nice people, almost always on hand and available to chat. Love the family atmosphere!! Things they could do better: PLEASE GET RID OF THE CHEAP PAPER MENUS!! As I said, the feel of this place is upscale, certainly for Chino Hills, yet their menu is less classy than an In N Out lap mat handed out of the drive through window. Most restaurants we visit have gone back to regular menus, and Pizzaioli needs to do likewise. And for a place that once owned their own wine shop, it's bewildering to me that they insist on using a QR code for their extensive wine list. It may seem a small complaint, but we went there the other night and I left my phone in my car as I always do when dining out, because I want to focus on the experience. The server was very apologetic, but I had to go BACK to my car to get my phone just to see the wine list. For heaven's sake, if you change your wine list frequently, fine, use a printed one (like the menus). But I want to be able to easily flip back and forth when selecting a wine, not scroll up and down while squinting at my phone. (1-1/2 stars deducted for this alone) One of the signatures of going to Pizzaioli over the years was their bread and bruschetta when you sit down. They now charge $4.00 for the bruschetta, and they charge $4.00 for an extra basket of bread, which is nothing more than insulting. The baskets are small to begin with, and those charges feel like you're dining at a Denny's, not an upscale restaurant with prices equivalent to those at a nice place in downtown L.A. If too much bruschetta was being wasted by automatically bringing it, have the servers ASK if people want it. The bread is fresh and good, but a complaint of mine since we started coming here is that the bread is always room temp. If you're going to start charging for extra bread, at least have the bread be WARM when it's brought to the table. I am writing this review to hopefully be helpful and encouraging to the owners, not gripe about petty things. But these small things can taint a total restaurant experience and give the wrong impression to those visiting for the first time. My wife and I are foodies, we have dined multiple times at Michelin Star restaurants, and a night dining out together or with friends is the highlight of our week. We love this restaurant, but the pandemic is OVER. They need to step things up and bring the level of the overall experience back to the level of what they are charging. read more

Went to Pizzaioli's last night. It wasn't busy and they were training new staff. It was the worst service I've ever had. We had to ask for a menu, then gave our drink order. She can back 10 minutes later and asked if we wanted to order drinks. The regular staff was standing at the bar talking to each other and on their cell phones. The bartender was tasting drinks before taking them to customers.... Yuck. We had to flag down the staff/bartender to order food. After we got our appetizers we had to ask for plates and silverware... I have never had such poor service and the place was more than half empty. So disappointed. Last night I ordered a Caesar salad, bread and bruschetta for catering. I came to pick up and everyone was friendly and they even helped carry the items to my car. If you've ever eaten here, you know how amazing the food is, it's so good that I drove 20 min out of the way to get it and took it to a party 30 min away. When I got to my party I received a call that they had forgotten to give me the dressing. There was no way I could drive back in traffic to get it. Instead, they drove in Friday traffic to bring it from Chino to West Covina. I, along with all the other party guests, were astonished at how seriously they take their service. I've been here quite few times and always get the cioppino. I use to love it! This time was not so great and I decided on 3 star rating because the other times were so good. This experience was only a 1 star rating but I wanted to fair. It had been months since I've been there and a few changes were smaller portions, (at least for the cioppino) and also the charge for bruschetta, it used to be free and came with the bread. At $28 for cioppino, I expected it to come in a big glass bowl as the two times before, but this time it came in a hard plastic shallow bowl with a huge brim and I'd guess that it was about half the portion as the last times. It was good but at this price totally not worth it. They also forgot to put the little lobsters in the cioppino which is the best part. I asked my waitress and she said that the chef said there were a few in there, but he could give me more. There were none, I looked for them, but she did bring some out to add to my broth. My friend ordered the mushroom risotto for $22. Small portion, plastic dish, no side. ThAts a lot of money for a rice dish with spinach and a few mushrooms, no protein and no side. I knew the prices before coming here. I don't mind spending money for good food, but this time the portions were so small it just was not worth it. I'll be finding another place for cioppino.
