We are considering having our wedding here, so on a Friday night we came here for dinner. It was VERY busy, but the hostess was friendly and we grabbed drinks to have while we waited. Everything you n my original review still holds. But be warned if you order the duck: it is very undercooked, even though they describe it medium. And the kitchen will not let you order it more cooked. I don't like raw meat or the texture of barely cooked meat, so I ended up boxing the duck to take gone and cook further. So did another member of our party. Two others liked the duck as it came. People differ on how cooked they like their meat, which is why most restaurants ask. Not Pizzaiolo. It would be good if they let patrons know in the menu description that the duck is served only rare, so diners can better assess if it's a fit. read more

Fraudulent charges on receipt. Restaurant charges a 4% fee on your check. This is not disclosed on the menu and it is not the healthy San Francisco fee. The fee is due to increased costs. There is a way to deal with increased costs-by raising prices. Not by adding undisclosed fees to unsuspecting customers. Service is painfully slow despite the restaurant not being full and numerous waitstaff present. Food is very mediocre. The sauce is uninspired and their house-made sausage is no better than the frozen sausage at your local hole in the wall. The crust was a step up but did not makeup for the rest of the poor quality. During the beginning of the pandemic, we would get take out from them and it was one of the few places where the takeout was presented nicely in the boxes and just as tasty as if you dined in. We also love to buy from their little "food market" of sorts. They got us hooked on the olive oil they use. I came here for dinner yesterday and it awesome! This place gets super packed so make sure you make reservations or just hope you're next. This place was sorta hard to find due to the small business between others. There front store sign is tiny and kinda transparent to the wood lol As we walked in, I noticed the large crowd, the old Tuscany furniture, the wooden bar, the classy servers, the old Italian/Western music, smell of wood fire pizza in the air, etc. I love this place flat out. I just wished there was more ventilation, because there's that thick aroma in the air, while there a big crowd which makes it hot and sticky etc. More windows open and more AC lol I ordered the Margherita pizza topped with fresh anchovies! This pizza was a good size, it was toasted just right, thin slices, fresh tomato sauce, small assortment of basil which sucked, but overall this pizza gets a B! I also love their complimentary bread with their organic butter. The bread is crusty and smoky with a chewy inside. I wished they gave more though :/ The service was excellent! He refilled our waters, respond quick with our pizzas, and talked to us like his own home guests. Great job! I would love to come back but for the mean time, I will have to try other pizza joints! Great spot in Oakland. I started off with some really yummy meatballs which had some pine nuts and other unidentified goodness baked inside. I liked their Nan bread style crust on their pizza. We got the prosciutto and arugula pizza which was fairly classic, and a sausage and rapini pizza (interesting combo) I also tried one of their pasta dishes, bucatini, shell beans, with some cured ham, and bread crumbs. I have a new god. Thy name is Pizzaiolo Double Burger. I eaten food all over the world (everyone needs a hobby), and I think I can honestly say, this is the best burger I've ever had. Not the best burger since COVID started, not the best since I moved to the bay, not the best in the USA but, the best I've EVER HAD. It's amazing. I'm serious, after I went home, I thought about this burger like we just went on a great first date together! I thought about all the things I loved about that burger. After having ordered on Uber eats, one hour later the restaurant was very late and my order was canceled. I know it is uber eats and not the restaurant but if they cannot manage to make pizza ready for delivery they should not be in the business nor accept online orders. Pizzaiolo is a pleasant place to visit with friends. The backyard area is huge and shares with a neighboring taproom. The reason I recommended inviting friends is because the back area is so big you can feel like driftwood (lost). Fortunately I was able to make conversation with staff and learn more about the restaurant. For me the food was simple (basic). My husband and I were looking forward to having nostalgic dinner. We have not been back in 8 years. Our dinner was quite underwhelming. We ordered a Margarita pizza with sausage and pepperoni. The pizza was soggy in the middle and the crust was too chewy. The pizza was too doughy. We also ordered the tomato soup and it was too creamy and tasted like pasta sauce. The only dish we enjoyed was the sautéed broccolini and the bread. Things got a lot worse when a man siting at the table next to us had his shoes and socks off and was rubbing his dirty feet with the hand he was eating with. It was quite disgusting and made our dinning experience subpar. This restaurant has gone downhill and we will not be coming back. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Oakland - hands down. The vibe is unreal. The service is out of this world. I hosted my 30th birthday in the back room with 15 guests- they played the best music, let us bring in a cake and decorate the whole table. They also helped my friend set it up. Our server and the manager checked in often and made sure we had the BEST time. My whole group keeps raving about how perfect of a birthday spot it was. On the other hand - this is also a perfect spot for date night- it's dim and sexy inside. The food is amazing and so are the drinks. I can't wait to come back soon. read more

There's a saying that even when pizza is bad, it's still better than no pizza. And that's about where I'd rate this pizza. Better than no pizza. We came to Pizzaiolo because we had seen it on a TV show called "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" and judging by some of the reviews on Yelp and other sites, apparently other diners enjoy the food here. We ordered a simple Margherita di bufala pizza - kind of hard to screw up, right? Unfortunately, the pie we got - just by looking at it - was not their best offering. (See photo below) The crust was burnt in places and somehow soggy in the middle at the same time. Apparently they had doused the pie with so much olive oil and stretched the dough so much that what was left in the middle of the pie was a thin layer of undercooked dough, topped with a mushy soup of olive oil, tomato paste and a bit of cheese. Where it wasn't burnt, the outer crust was decent, and the tomato sauce was pleasantly acidic/ sweet. There was only a bit of cheese on the pie. Really disappointing, and in no way the best I've ever eaten. Service was very good, lighting was very dim where we sat and the pie was $20, with another $15 for the cod & potato fritters. We got lucky with a walk-in table on a Saturday night despite two of us with their number on speed dial... for 30mins straight... at 3pm. We ordered a pizza, "for starters" of course! Cherry Tomatoes, Calabrian Peppers, Pancetta. Scrumpdeeliumptious!! And each ordered Braised Beef Short Ribs with Sweet Corn Polenta, baked tomato, romano beans, and fried sage. The meat was falling off these short ribs and boy was it tender! The polenta was a perfect accompaniment! Finished off dinner with a nice Affogato. Since the menu changes daily, not sure how helpful this review will be. It started with the Kentucky Devil, a bourbon, ginger,lime and cassis concoction that is served up, well chilled and delicious. We ordered: The meatballs - always a house favorite Tuscan kale with green garlic, hot pepper, lemon and toasted breadcrumbs - hot out of the oven, well seasoned and paired beautifully with the meatballs. Bucatini with cannellini beans, escarole, rosemary and toasted breadcrumbs- savory and creative with lots of flavor and crunch. Braised short ribs with celery root mashed potatoes, roasted carrots and salsa verde - the meat was fork tender, the mashed potatoes were creamy. Each bite was just wrapped in hugs! We are in LOVE with Pizzaiolo! Since we were introduced to them last summer, Pizzaiolo has been our go to for outdoor dining. All of the pizzas we've eaten have been great. Seating in the parlette is nice, but what's really wonderful is the seating on Temescal alley. The lack of cars puts us more at ease when our girls want to get up and wander a bit. All of the staff is great as well. On our last visit, we noticed that we were charged for a bottle of water that we had not received. When paying we asked for the bottle to take with us thinking it would be easier than having it taken off a check that we already paid. Not only did they take it off the check, but they insisted we take it with us. Great place, great food, and greaet people! read more

Came here for the smash burgers featured on Tik Tok and it was a disappointment. We had to wait for 20 minutes, because when we arrived, they took a break on orders. Ordered 2 doubles, 1 single and french fries. 30 minute goes by and we see everyone around us being served. Workers pass by and begin cleaning up the patio. My brother 6 in our order. The employee didn't offer any apology nor did he seem remorseful, but simply stated he'd get started on it. The burgers came 10 minutes later: not enough salt and the fries were oversalted. I couldn't finish the burger because of the lack in flavor. It was just mediocre. Before leaving, it turns out they forgot another couple's order, but gave them an apology. Go figure. You're better off going to Red Robin or Shake Shack for smash burgers. If you're craving chicken sandwiches, go to Bakesale Betty's a few doors down. I visited Pizzaiolo because many of my friends had recommended it. Unfortunately, I didn't agree. The food was average - not great but also not horrible. The service was absolutely subpar. Unfortunately, I had to talk to the manager to express my discontent with our server, as he literally ignored us the whole time we were there except when we had to pay. He ever forgot a bottle of wine we requested (which is confusing - didn't he want to increase the total amount sold?). A group of ladies sitting next to us also expressed how bad and inattentive the same server was. The manager apologized for the lack of service, and I hope he communicated that to the server. The pizza was indeed great (we got the tomato sauce, sausage, hot pepper, and panna) but $20 was definitely steep for a ~9" pie. On top of that, both the waitress and hostess were quite rude to us. Not in an overt way, but more in a talking down to us way. I noticed that our waitress was way nicer to this super hipster pair sitting next to us. It feels absurd to type this but I feel like we were being discriminated for not being hipster enough?? Who knows. It doesn't matter how good to food is if it is overpriced and reeking with pretentiousness. Rude service really does just ruin the whole experience.
