So, my girlfriend was here from New York city last week. I wanted to show off our city a little bit, so after attending the Driehaus Museum (which was very cool), I guided us to Pizzeria UNO on Ohio street. I haven't been there in MANY years, but I was SO DISAPPOINTED. My memories are of a cool place with lots of bohemian/Italian ambience. And, I've always loved their deep dish pan pizza. The place was HOT as hell!! They seated us in an area where I could see in to the kitchen. Big mistake!! I could see lettuce and other food on the floor that the servers kept walking through, in and out. Our server was not friendly. To be fair, it was crowded and noisy, but she was shouting at us and with NO friendliness about her at all. I ordered a 1/2 lemonade/1/2 club soda. They don't have any club soda and only bottled drinks, no fountain availability at ALL!! What the heck??!!! No fountain drinks?? Worst of all, the pizza was cold and practically cheese-less. I remember the pizza being ooey-gooey with ample mozzarella cheese!! We each ordered individual pizzas, but it was the SAME CHARGE as it would be if we ordered a large for any of the add on ingredients!! The crust was terrible and it was just bland, NO taste to the sausage, the sauce, nor the minimal cheese. I was embarrassed, humiliated and it only solidified my friend's choice to live in New York!! I will NEVER go back. I'm not a huge fan of Lou Malnati's, but it's looking better and better for good pan pizza. So sad. read more

Quite a lot of people waiting outside. My friend and I put our name on the waiting list and put in our pizza order, which was suggested to speed things up. We were given an estimate of 30-45 minute to wait, but we got called in within 10 minutes. Thank goodness we didn't wander off too far! We shared a spinach salad, garlic bread, and a small Numero Uno pizza. The salad was drenched in dressing, so it may be better to ask for it on the side. Garlic bread was DELICIOUS when it came out fresh. They give tomato sauce for you to dip. The pizza came out shortly after our garlic bread and was cut and served in front of us. Fanastic! SUPER filling as we were only able to eat half of a small. Oh my! I found the service to be great during this visit. I'm so thankful we did not have to wait too long to be seated and to have our food ready. As my first legit Chicago deep dish pizza, I was very satisfied with Pizzeria Uno! read more

Unfortunately the deep dish pizza did not me or expectations, or meet the hype that we have always heard about when it comes to Chicago deep dish pizza. Great Chicago deep dish experience! Would definitely come back for their great customer service and food. We strolled in Sunday shortly before noon, and was immediately warmly greeted at the door and sat right away. Our friendly server let us know the time the pizza would take 45 minutes, however we timed it and came to us after 31 minutes! The feel and vibe of the restaurant is exactly what I was looking for, small, quant, personality and history. Living in Vegas I was trying to get away from the over priced strip restaurant experience, this achieved it. Value was right on. Food: Cheesy Bread: 5/5 -not greasy at all. You can actually task the flavor of the cheese. Dipping sauce spot on! Deep dish Uno pizza: 5/5 -again not greasy. Full of flavor. Pizza was stuffed with loads of toppings. This was one of the must eat at places for pizza and so far this is the worse pizza I've had here. Crust was crumbly and no flavor. Got an old fashion and it wasn't even made correctly. You don't muddle the fruit for an old fashion it's not a mojito. Also they used the wrong cherries. Go to Lou's or the art of pizza for better pizza. read more

Pregnancy hormones had me craving pan pizza with any ingredients... from Pizzeria Uno. We placed an order for pickup, and it was about a 40min wait (standard) on a Friday evening. Large pan pizza with sausage: 5 (SO good) House salad: 4 (wanted an antipasto salad, but they don't offer it) Pickup service was efficient and friendly. I'm a fake history buff.. I saw that this is where the deep dish pizza was invented and said well where better to try deep dish for the first time than Chicago and at the place where it was invented at that! So I walk into the spot.. a bit cozy... I imagine if each pizza didn't take an hour + to make then this place would be more packed than it was.. but I came alone so I'm pulling up to the bar every time.. gotta chat with the bartender anyway get a history lesson. The first lesson I learned was "eat here once and cross it off the bucket list" I say don't prioritize it if it is on your bucket list and if it isn't then don't put it on. I learned that when my guy said it'll take about an hour for a small pie.. now I didn't want to let him down as I expressed it was my first time in Chicago and I never had deep dish before.. he's an OG there so I ordered and a Chicago mule. I was in Chicago for only one day for a corporate event I was working on. Got to walk downtown, it is definitely one of the most beautiful and interesting cities I've ever been to. We got to stop by for lunch here since my coworker said it's one of the top deep dish pizza restaurants in downtown. After having my first Chicago-style pizza, I immediately FELL in love. I remember the crust tasting like buttery heaven and I was only able to take down 1 1/2 slices of my personal pizza. I took the rest back to my hotel and enjoyed it in my huge comfy hotel bed later that night. I definitely plan on coming back and eating here again! :) read more

Update on my previous review: called into the store and spoke to April, the manager, who was beyond understanding, apologetic, and kind. She refunded my card for the pizza and asked for a chance to make it up, which I truly appreciated since I've grown up eating pizza from here. Raising my stars from 1/5 to 3/5 (April truly deserves a 5/5 but since I'm rating this place as a whole, I feel wrong going higher than a 3 until I go there again and my pizza is perfect). Ah, Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, it seems like a must eat when in town. We decided to go with Pizzeria Uno since it was a close walk from our hotel on State St. and it was said to be one of the first to do deep dish in the Windy City. We stopped in after we got in from the airport (around 2:30p on a Friday) and found there was a line (as we hear there always is), but it was relatively short and since they let you order your pie when you put your name in, it doesn't seem so bad when you get to the table. I can't remember how long we waited, but honestly it didn't seem long. We got a booth inside near the bar. It is cramped quarters in there, but it had a nice old school pizza joint vibe. We sampled the cheesy bread and had a few pints and before we knew it we had our deep dish pie! The crust was buttery and had a crispness to it. I knew all the topping go on raw and then they cook it, with the sauce on top. It was different - good different. It is really more of a knife and fork kind of meal. I liked it for the experience, but I must say unless I am in Chicago I will probably go with NY style. It is a great stop though! Good pizza, friendly service and decent prices. read more

Unfortunately it wasn't my favorite, man. The pizza crust needed a bit more flavor, and the sauce didn't seem like it was bold enough. It seems like, when it comes to deep dish, personal opinions are vast and varied. I've only ever tried Giordano's before and prefer it by a long shot. If you're going to go through the trouble of waiting 40 minutes for a meal that hits your stomach like a truck, you want it to be completely worth it. I'm a huge pizza a fan and this just didn't do it for me. Now I'm not saying that it was terrible, but I wouldn't find it worth going back. I can say on a positive, however, that the location itself is fantastic. You're right by the magnificent mile and one of the red line stations (Clark I believe). The building is SUPER cool and everything's about it feels authentic except, sadly, the expectations for great pizza. read more

After my first experience here 45 years ago, it has always been nice to come back and share it with others. More than 20 years ago we brought our children, and today we are here on a date. The place has not changed much but beer is better, now with local drafts. Each visit has been a foundation for another phase, and this time it's a yelp review. I have had pizza in a number of classic spots. To start my list is a squash pizza cooked on a charcoal grill (not what it sounds like) at Al Forno in Providence about 20 years ago. Next on the list is the now gone Everybody's pizza from their early years in Decatur, GA across from Emory University. Also from Atlanta, the early Mellow Mushroom (becoming a franchise has worn them down). But the really spectacular experience was Naples pizza as a class of its own. Also in Italy, we had pizza in Rome that was more flatbread like and another in Herculaneum that was kind of a cross between Rome and Naples. And, we have Pizzaria Uno. This remains a favorite. Thankfully we ordered a small Numero Uno, and as we were eating it, I could not recall it being on the menu 45 years ago. Back then, it was sausage, pepperoni, or cheese (and maybe a few other options?). Anyway ours was great, as we expected. I will emphasize that each of these pizzas is special and quite different. The Mellow Mushroom and Everybody's were similar but all the others differ greatly. I have no favorite but each is at the top of its class. By the way, I have tried repeatedly, and I cannot abide the dough and cheap sauce thing called New York pizza. Sorry. Eat well, tip well. read more

This was my first time eating at the original Unos and I have to say, it's the THE BEST Chicago deep dish in the city! I had a 1/2 sausage, 1/2 veggie and washed it down with an IPA. Perfection in every way. Another thing that deserves a mention was the great staff that works there! Everyone was so friendly and the service was so fast. From Lemont who made the pie to David who brought it out, I couldn't have been more impressed. If you ever go ask if Courtney is working. She's been there for a decade or more serving these pies with a smile and made it an experience I won't soon forget. read more

So when in Chicago you have to try a deep dish pizza no matter what the Internet says. We went with the top rated deep dish pizza places and they were very disappointing. Not bad, but a good home made deep dish pizza is much better. I gave Chicago one more chance and tried Pizzeria Uno. Now we are talking. A nice crispy (a bit too buttery) deep crust, enough but not too much cheese and a lot of pepperoni with a good tomato sauce. Note: an individual pizza is definitely enough for a normal hungry human being. The restaurant itself is small, kid friendly (as in "nobody cares if your kids scream") and the bartender was great. If I am ever in Chicago again, this is my deep dish pizza place. Giving it four stars because of these occasionally screaming kids and too much butter in the crust. Blown out! Serving animal fodder. Where does a man with two women, have to go to get freakin' service? Not this sauna. After drinking 6 gulps, I check the date - there it is: 5-1/2 months passed the expiration! IT'S A LaLaLand Chicago RAT TRAP! Behind me, some twat flips an entire tray of wings, gobs of ranch, fries, steaks, burgers (what did I miss) through the air onto me, my suit, the cellar windows, the seats & the carpet. Now I have 2 hot women - I'd like to flirt - but have some sort of noise from a mini-vacuum, droning me out. And soda/ice spilled all over the table (which does not make it different than before - except were wet). Bathrooms reeked something horrid. The uno pizza was great, the veggies were the best part but the pizza itself was a bit salty and the crust was just not the harmony of crispy to soft ratio! The pizza also had abnormally large chunks of sausage...which didn't bother me much but that was strange. Have had uno's before but as a chicagoan have never visited this location because its always way too crowded. We decided to finally check it out when there was no wait. The inside was small and rustic I thought it was a cute little pizza spot, my mom on the other hand felt chlostraphobic as we were sat in the back corner of the restaurant. They invented the deep dish pizza and they cook it unlike anywhere else in the world (that I know of) I hate most deep dish pizza because they drown it in stringy cheese. If you love piles of cheese I suggest other deep dish places in Chicago or throwing a block of cheese in the oven but if you want a devine mix of a pie-like crust with a perfect symphony of ingredients come here! I downed my pizza in an animalistic manner and still wanted more. This is the only pizza that will not leave you bloated and tired after eating. Over-order and take some home or to the hotel. I highly recommend coming in as soon as it opens. People know how good this place is and it gets packed quick. As I write this message I shed a tear because I live in Georgia and the deep dish pizza here is only a hollow imitation of gluten and balled up cheese. read more

I'm an outsider who recently came to Chicago to visit a friend. One of our top priorities was to try out some of the most famous deep dish pizzerias in Chicago - Pizzeria Uno, Gino's East, Lou Malnati's, and Giordano's. Unfortunately, Uno was by far the worst of the four. We ordered the "Numero Uno" (Hah! What a misnomer) and a chicken and sausage pizza, and both of them were extremely dry. There was barely any tomato sauce on it! In addition, the toppings did not seem fresh or high quality. Overall, it was just a bland, mediocre pizza. The butter crust did taste pretty good (definitely very buttery), but it was so thick and similarly dry that it got old pretty fast. We arrived at about 2 PM on a Saturday, and the wait time was about 40 minutes. Fortunately, they allow you to pre-order, so by the time we were seated, we didn't have to wait too much longer for the pizza to arrive. Another bonus is that they give you huge cups of water, which is key when you are bombarding your body with massive amounts of sodium. The ambience, however, was not great. The interior is small and crowded, and just feels very old and grungy overall. The waiter service was fine though. All in all, I can't really recommend Uno, especially given the availability of so many other superior options close by. read more

Ugh. We haven't had pizzeria uno in several years, but we were staying right next door and thought it sounded good. We did take out, but it was literally a 3- minute walk back to the hotel. We live in Chicago and we know what we're getting into when we order a deep dish pizza. This was not good. It felt like something was wrong, as we couldn't even get the slices onto our plates without them falling apart... not in a delicious gooey, cheesy way, but in a "someone forgot to drain the spinach before putting it on there" kind of way. There was literally water oozing around the box and the pizza was not edible. I called to explain our frustration, and the person at UNO's was like, "yeah that's how it is- it's the sauce- it's deep dish," like this was how it should be. She suggested I stick it in the oven. It sounded like she thought I was a tourist who just doesn't know that this is not normal for deep dish pizza. Cheesy and gooey, yes; so soggy with watery ickiness that we can't even get it onto a plate, hard no. If you want a good pizza, I guess you'll have to try Malnati's, Giordano's, Burt's... I would steer clear of this place. No one should order a $40 pizza and have to cook it again when it arrives 5 minutes later. And the fact that the person on the phone was not surprised by my complaint was telling. So disappointed. read more
