So, my girlfriend was here from New York city last week. I wanted to show off our city a little bit, so after attending the Driehaus Museum (which was very cool), I guided us to Pizzeria UNO on Ohio street. I haven't been there in MANY years, but I was SO DISAPPOINTED. My memories are of a cool place with lots of bohemian/Italian ambience. And, I've always loved their deep dish pan pizza. The place was HOT as hell!! They seated us in an area where I could see in to the kitchen. Big mistake!! I could see lettuce and other food on the floor that the servers kept walking through, in and out. Our server was not friendly. To be fair, it was crowded and noisy, but she was shouting at us and with NO friendliness about her at all. I ordered a 1/2 lemonade/1/2 club soda. They don't have any club soda and only bottled drinks, no fountain availability at ALL!! What the heck??!!! No fountain drinks?? Worst of all, the pizza was cold and practically cheese-less. I remember the pizza being ooey-gooey with ample mozzarella cheese!! We each ordered individual pizzas, but it was the SAME CHARGE as it would be if we ordered a large for any of the add on ingredients!! The crust was terrible and it was just bland, NO taste to the sausage, the sauce, nor the minimal cheese. I was embarrassed, humiliated and it only solidified my friend's choice to live in New York!! I will NEVER go back. I'm not a huge fan of Lou Malnati's, but it's looking better and better for good pan pizza. So sad. read more

This was my first time at this Pizza Uno but was not my first time having deep dish pizza as I grew up in Chicago and lived there for a while. The pizzeria was recommended by a friend who constantly visits Ted the location with family when in town. I really wanted to love the place but personally was not impressed by either the establishment or the pizza. The establishment was crowded and intimate to put it nicely and the area didn't look as clean as I'd expect it to. I did like that there was a standing bar but my group didn't use it since we were at a table. The service was nice and as quick as possible for deep dish which takes about 45 minutes. In regards to the pizza while the toppings were decent and your usual special assortment of peppers, onions, mushrooms, sausage, and pepperoni; I didn't fully understand why they were on top of the pizza since when I've typically had deep dish they are incorporated into the sauce. With the pizza that we ordered there was a layer of sausage under the sauce which was a bit much. And the toppings themselves seemed unseasoned or at least under flavored. The crust of the pizza itself had a more crumbly feeling and tasted like homemade bread. While this pizzeria claims that it may be the "original" deep dish pizza I personally believe there are other options to explore around the city. But to end on a positive they did offer parking validation for the parking garage diagonal from the restaurant. While it wasn't for the full value of the parking garage it was a very nice deduction. read more

Historically, this is the birthplace of deep dish pizza... so on my trip to Chicago, I had to try it! Down the street is Pizzeria Due. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to try their second pizzeria. Next time I go to Chicago, I definitely will try it. At Pizzeria Uno the staff was very friendly and helpful and offered excellent service. From the menu I ordered a vegetarian pizza called Spinoccoli. Being vegetarian in a very meat centric city I am sure affected the taste, as I found the pizza very well made but a bit bland. I had too add salt, which is rare for me. Besides that, I enjoyed my experience and would recommend visiting this historic spot for their famous deep dish pizza. In reflection, I am sure back in 1943, when the deep dish was invented they didn't have vegetarians in mind. I am just guessing there might be less care in the vegetarian food prep here than in a meat prep meal. read more

3.5 Review--- Maybe the hype was too high, but I honestly didn't see anything amazing about this place or Chicago style pizza in general. It was good, but nothing amazing. For roughly $10, you can order a savory single person pie. The wait was roughly 20 minutes and we had a waiter who knew what he was doing, but very disengaged. However, there are a few things keeping this place from shining. The Food: Pizzas were served fresh and straight out of the oven. The crust was very crunchy and tasted awesome! The sauce was rich, but the lack of meat and veggies was a bit bad. (The ingredients tasted very fresh though) The BBQ Chicken pizza was a love it or hate it experience. The portions of chicken on it were minimal, and they mixed the BBQ sauce with tomato sauce. The Atmosphere: The place had decor that screamed the place had a history. I was actually recommended to UNO's by a person I met at a coffee shop, claiming its been around forever. However, the interior was very cramped and tables were placed literally right next to each other. Very little room to breathe and single bathrooms were uncomfortable. Overall, I can see myself coming back to get a bite with the wife if it was on the way somewhere. But it is not something we will go out of our way for. Ok. My granddaughters first visit to Chicago so this is a must stop. I prefer Giodornos but that might just be me. They handle the wait perfectly. This was some high quality deep dish Chicago style pizza! It was very similar to Lou Malnatis (my favorite deep dish) with a sausage layer throughout and a similar flavor profile. The crust wasn't quite as good as the buttered crust from Lou Malnatis and as you can see in the picture, it was slightly burnt. Pizzeria UNO is delicious and it is definitely worth my 28 miles trip to Chicago. I enjoyed the authentic Deep-dish Style Pizza, and the cozy little restaurant. It gets pretty crowed in there, so get a carryout order if you can't handle all of the Patrons. The drinks are freaking delicious so definitely have one or 2! Overall, the customer service was great, and our waitress was really nice and friendly. The Pizza gets 4 out of 5 stars from me. Its quite expensive, but worth the money. Decent pizza, great location, TERRIBLE SERVICE I had to grab an obligatory Chicago Deep Dish while in town and this place was conveniently around the corner from my hotel. Looked decent and old school, figured why not?! The pizza was a good value on a dollar per calorie basis, but was kind of like a giant Ellio's pizza I used to toast when my mom was working late and I had to heat something from the freezer. I love Ellio's pizza so it wasn't bad at all, just nothing to write home about! The service was HORRIBLE. My server was the worst server I have ever encountered. My friend and I were seated at a small table for 3 by the hostess, then the waitress rudely kicked us out and made us sit at an awkward table for 2 along the patio entrance. You saved us, Pizzeria Uno!! We weren't planning to come here at all, but after leaving hangry from a very nearby Italian restaurant, I was told to just order a to go pizza while we walked around. Order I did! We ordered the small deep dish Numero Uno ($19.99), which is a brick in the best sense of the word. On the Uno are sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green pepper and extra cheese. What we were blown away by was just how crispy the crust was, almost like a pie crust, but the pizza itself felt like you were eating lasagna in terms of heft. Each bite was great, and the two of us couldn't finish a small pizza in one evening!! Here's the thing too...because the pizza is so thick, this bad boy stays warm for hours, and even though it was overnight before we finished the pizza, it wasn't ice cold the next morning because again, all that good insulation! We weren't planning to go to Pizza Uno, but man they delivered with our to go pie. I can't even imagine how good the pizza would be in the restaurant, but we have to go back to Chicago to find out. You can't come to Chicago as a tourist and not try the first location to offer deep dish pizza. This place is very touristy and crowded, so be prepared for a tight squeeze in seating. They are very organized though, and often will have you put in your deep dish order while waiting to be seated, since that takes minimum 45 minutes to prepare anyway. There is a bar inside to grab a drink while you wait for your table, beer is nice and cold. My group went with the house special, the "Numero Uno" which comes with: cheese, onions, mushroom, bell pepper, sausage, sauce, and pepperoni. The cheese and pepperoni are all mixed in with the sauce, then a layer of sausage, and sliced onions and bell peppers on top. I didn't really care for this arrangement, the veggies on top were a bit over powering, next time I would either ask for light on the veggies, or just order a pepperoni. The sausage is just one big flat piece, took away from the pepperoni flavor. I am used to just smaller sausage pieces on my pizza. Overall the pizza was good, but not my favorite. I recommend coming to this place for the touristy aspect, and the venue has a good old school feel. read more

We were in town for NYE and went with family from Toronto where there were 12 of us in total. This place is NOT good for large groups! We waited an hour to get seated, but they called us when our table was ready, so we were able to go out and explore the surrounding shops. Additionally, we had to put our pizza orders in prior to getting a table; no, they didn't make us pay until the end of the meal. We ordered two large deep dish pizzas, two salads, two plates of calamari, and various drinks all around. Unfortunately, we were seated directly in front of the bathrooms with old plumbing, so you can imagine the smells that were occasionally wafted over to us. Back to the food... Yes, pizza was good, but I've had better deep dish at a few other places in the city. The salads were excellent, but I'm guessing that's not why people go to pizza places in the city. The calamari was disappointing because there were no tentacles (I guess it's a love/hate preference). If you want to get an original deep dish experience, this is the place. Had it not been for the seating situation and how tight of a squeeze it was, I would've given UNO's 4 stars. This place is in a great location. read more

Compared to Uno, it has a better cheese, it's more dense, and the sink of your teeth through the layers of cheese and crust is just better in my opinion. Uno to me is just too watery but the crust is better. Come here early or late in the afternoon since it's a tourist destination. A medium will happily serve 3 people two slices each, with a slice or two leftover depending on how hungry you are. It'll run you about $30 inc tax and tip. read more

I saw that this is where the deep dish pizza was invented and said well where better to try deep dish for the first time than Chicago and at the place where it was invented at that! So I walk into the spot.. a bit cozy... I imagine if each pizza didn't take an hour + to make then this place would be more packed than it was.. but I came alone so I'm pulling up to the bar every time.. gotta chat with the bartender anyway get a history lesson. The first lesson I learned was "eat here once and cross it off the bucket list" I say don't prioritize it if it is on your bucket list and if it isn't then don't put it on. I learned that when my guy said it'll take about an hour for a small pie.. now I didn't want to let him down as I expressed it was my first time in Chicago and I never had deep dish before.. he's an OG there so I ordered and a Chicago mule. Ugh. We haven't had pizzeria uno in several years, but we were staying right next door and thought it sounded good. We did take out, but it was literally a 3- minute walk back to the hotel. We live in Chicago and we know what we're getting into when we order a deep dish pizza. This was not good. It felt like something was wrong, as we couldn't even get the slices onto our plates without them falling apart... not in a delicious gooey, cheesy way, but in a "someone forgot to drain the spinach before putting it on there" kind of way. There was literally water oozing around the box and the pizza was not edible. I called to explain our frustration, and the person at UNO's was like, "yeah that's how it is- it's the sauce- it's deep dish," like this was how it should be. She suggested I stick it in the oven. It sounded like she thought I was a tourist who just doesn't know that this is not normal for deep dish pizza. Cheesy and gooey, yes; so soggy with watery ickiness that we can't even get it onto a plate, hard no. If you want a good pizza, I guess you'll have to try Malnati's, Giordano's, Burt's... I would steer clear of this place. No one should order a $40 pizza and have to cook it again when it arrives 5 minutes later.
