Stopped by for takeout only. It was a Saturday night and they were crazy busy. I'm not sure if it's always this busy on a Saturday or because there was a holiday parade to blocks away. Anyhow, the staff did a good job trying to take care of where everyone waiting for a table or placing a takeout order. I ordered three individual pies to go. The staff let it be known it was going to take 45 minutes for all pizzas. I thought that was a little long, but at least the staff was smart enough to let us know ahead of time before even placing an order. Personally I'm not a big fan of deep dish pizza but when you're in Chicago you gotta go for it. Because I'm not a fan of deep dish I'm not going to rate that part of the pizza but I did find their sauce to be a little on the sour side, which I was not a fan of. One thing to note about this review, we didn't get pizza, so this review is not a reflection on their specialty. We went on a Tuesday night where they were pretty packed, the bar was open so we choose to sit there and we got the cookie ice cream pizookie and it was ok, not what we expected as the cookie was cooled off by the time it came and there wasn't that much ice cream on it. The cookie tasted okay but not the same not being warmed. Coming to Chicago I was ready to try REAL DEEP DISH PIZZA at the place where it was invented, that's why we picked Uno. Well... this experience was rather disappointing. We ordered two individual size pizzas - Numero Uno and Veggie. Waiting time was not a surprise for us so we came a little earlier to not starve to death before we get our food. 45 minutes after we made an order we got our deep dish pies but were not impressed at all. The crust was thick and soggy, pepperoni and raw mushrooms were tasteless, lots of crushed tomatoes and cheese tried to improve the situation but that famous deep dish was just okay. The place was small and crowded, with its atmosphere but definitely felt old and mostly living on its former glory and low prices. The Chicago Deep Dish pizza was invented at a place called Pizzeria Uno. It is an old-school spot that also has a bar inside so you can order some alcohol while having pizza. We came here because we wanted to of course try to original first before we try other places. They sat us for dinner time and we ordered our pizza and toppings with it. It takes close to 45 minutes or so for the pizza to be finished and headed to the table. My friends did drink a few drinks here and I ordered an Oreo cookie milkshake which was nice and light! We ordered a vegetable pizza that has toppings of mushrooms, onion, bell peppers, and tomatoes. Having a deep dish slice is a very hearty meal. I think having just two or so is well enough. The crust is similar to what I would say a pie is. But a little bit crispier. It's thick but not too thick and overall I did enjoy this place! I can see why they are still around and killing it. The restaurant was not busy but we were placed in a tiny booth that was uncomfortable and had a small table that didn't even hold our food when it came after 50 minutes. Any decent server would have seen we were not situated properly there. When we told the server he acted like he didn't hear us. In retrospect, we should have walked out then, but we had traveled all day and were hungry. He forgot our drink orders and didn't check on us. The pizza was certainly original, but had an old style taste, little seasoning and wasn't exciting at all. When the bill came, the server told us it was the bill from the table next to us. He said, "I'm giving you this one because it's cheaper." After paying, it became apparent that there was something wrong with the bill, it was about $30 more than we estimated from the online menu. He kept that bill and never presented ours. Possibly the worst server we ever had! I was in Chicago recently this weekend and was recommended this place as the founder of the deep dish pizza. So needless to say I was excited to visit. However my experience was not great. I came in as a party of two. The three young ladies at the front were not approachable and asked me to place a pizza order in order to be placed on the list. But not five mins later another group of two asked to be placed on the list and they were seated right away. Finally I was called. The table for two was located in the pathway, between the bar and the booths. Not too much space but I said okay we'll figure it out. Next comes a lady taking pictures of people seated on the booths and continues to bump into me and my partner as she's taking pictures of these families. I thought okay maybe it's for their instagram. I was wrong she soon came back to sell them. I let it go. A booth soon became available and I asked out server Melanie she was the greatest by the way! If we can please relocate as I was ordering a two pizzas, drink and appetizers so my food would not fit on a 2x2 table. She went to ask the front and was told they could not accommodate. She apologized and offered to keep our pizzas in the back after she served. The booth I had requested was empty for 15 mins. Soon after the camera lady came back to continue bumping into us and snapping pictures. I thought this better be a good pizza I'm about to have. Unfortunately it was not. The flavors were bland. The bartender fit into the atmosphere perfectly--a nice old guy who spoke with family visitors over the bar in a language that might have been Greek. I appreciate the old, no-nonsense bartenders that don't feel obliged to put on a show with every drink they make. It was refreshing, for a change, not to be asked if I was ready for another martini when I was 2/3 through the one I had. That's such a turn-off. She also shared a couple of important quirks of Chicago deep dish to be aware of if you haven't gotten in before. 1. It takes about 45 minutes to cook a pizza all the way through, so be patient. 2. Deep dish pizzas are thick so you probably need a smaller pizza than you think you do. If you usually get a medium for you and your other half, stick with the small, it will be plenty. You may also want to save some space for dessert. We tried the Delightfully Decadent Chocolate Cake and it was all of the above. A great place and great food. Let me start by saying our server was very nice and friendly. We asked for his recommendations on apps and mains. He recommended the garlic bread as an app and the Uno Deep Dish. The garlic bread was unfortunately nothing special, just melted cheese on French bread. No real seasoning or much garlic. Decent pizza. Not sure why I had a better experience when I got it delivered than when I ate there. The inside felt old and the service was ok. I was also confused by the "photographer" going around asking people if she can photograph them. Mostly mighty darn good. The concern about the absence of the Sewell family ownership is partially warranted. The sausage pizza was still very good, but the crust ain't the same. Missing is a slight flexibility, a moisture so the crust cuts more easily. I still enjoyed the sausage pizza (with just the right amount of fennel), but having not been here for a couple of years, the inflexible crust is biggest change I see. Four Cheese & Pesto pizza (Mozzarella, feta, cheddar, romano, and basil pesto sauce topped with diced tomatoes) is delicious. If you're not into sausage and meats (and even if you are), this deep dish is a great alternative. The large Caesar salad is still very good, if rather exorbitantly priced, per usual. Service was excellent. I loved our server, who had lots of personality and some recommendations when prompted. The spumoni at dessert was not great. Freezer-burn and poor texture. A chocolate cake was very good. Local draft beer list gives a lot of options and worth exploring. Please look at your crust and your spumoni, Uno's, but otherwise keep up the good work. read more
