Visited the Carmel location this weekend (at least I think it is Carmel, pretty close to Noblesville). We had a three generation party of 8 ranging from 2 mos to an age that will remain unsaid in order to protect the innocent birthday victim. Service was good especially considering that we arrived at the beginning of a peak time. Not a lot of people in the restaurant when we arrived but very full when we left an hour later. The pizza is bigger than a personal pizza. I love the crust. The breadsticks are really awesome. The kids had fun because there is a window where you see the pizza being made and going into and coming out of the oven. It was marked with seating for kids but I went with the excuse of watching the four year old. I must confess that I was watching the pizza. I think the oven is so hot the pizza and breadsticks cook in six minutes. The ingredients are all so fresh looking and the pizza tasted great. My favorite was the sausage. But I saw an arugula/mortadella go into the oven and need to try it on our next visit. At least if I don't make Carmel I can make the one on Mass Ave. Lots of local beer and I had the pleasure of trying a local craft Taxman Saison from Bargersville. All in all it was a hit. I'm starting to think that maybe it's just me. My search for great pizza in the Indy area has only led to disappointment and this was no different. I've realized that I'm a magnet for atrocious service. A rough timetable: 5 minutes - Coke and water arrive, pepperoni pizza, breadsticks, and salad ordered. 20 minutes - salad and breadsticks arrive, a family of five arrives. 65 minutes - we receive our pizza 66 minutes - the family of five receives their pizza How is this even in the realm of reasonable? I didn't really like Pizzology which is sad because I love pizza. My problem is that the non-meat pizzas seemed so boring. And why do so many of the have pork on them? Maybe I'm a little biased because I don't eat pork but I just wasn't a fan. Now, the pizza that we ordered (The Saint) wasn't terrible but it wasn't anything I would rave about. They are wood grilled pizzas but for a good wood grilled pizza, I would rather go to Napolese. Maybe I need to give this place another chance because other people seemed to like it but I just didn't love it. read more

OK, by now some of you have seen the movie Eat Pray Love in which Julia Roberts is orgasmic over her pizza in Naples. That could be you at Pizzology. I will go out on a short limb and say, this is the best pizza I. have. ever. had. They make their own cheese inhouse. They collect wild mushrooms. They use flour from Italy! I've had almost everything on the menu, and I'm absolutely head-over-heels in love with it all. I love the salads (grilled romaine, chop, spinach, fresh mozzarella), the risottos, the soup, the bread sticks, the gelato, the pastas and--of course--the pizzas. The Old Kentucky Rome can't be missed, and the homemade sausage is phenomenal. This is my absolute favorite restaurant in the Indy area, and more than worth the 35 minute drive it takes me to get there. If you can, try some of their signature cocktails. The Silver Horseshoe and the Superfast Jellyfish far surpass the run-of-the-mill drinks you'll find at other places. They've got a great beer selection and the wine list is above and beyond expectations. read more

Still very good pizza...(noshed doznes of times)I echo the clever observation by other yelpers "campfire esque" crust......still very "out of it" bartenders and staff. I am for a laid back atmosphere...but some of these guys are in danger of slipping into a coma. Perhaps their nonchalance is intended during the luncheon hours...not wanting to bother a big time business owner (moi) on his lunch hour...the dirty logo shirt, and crawl space detritus clinging to my Hanes shorts alerting the world to my success. However, some heart felt interest, or minimal conversation is occasionally welcome and appreciated. ...and....not having to ask for pepper, red pepper flakes, and cheese multiple times would be nice. Not every time....but fairly regularly. Mind you, this is partially tongue in cheek, these are nice people. I have friends in Carmel and Fishers....kinda like the ubiquitous black/gay.jewish/catholic/public school " I have friends that are....(fill in the blank)" conscientious retort people begin an explanation with just before they are about to say something offensive about that particular group to which they don't belong.... ...however...I have to agree with other yelpers....some of the conversation you cannot help but overhear...(decibels being a substitute for intellect sometimes)....and these conversations are....on occasion....stultifyingly banal and pretentious. A conversation among two women (abbreviated)..."my housekeeper's kids go to IPS public schools"...woman #2 "well..someone has to change my oil".....comments like this would ordinarily be funny....if not said with church like seriousness. I'm just going to stay it at the top - this place rocks. Wait, not rocks, ROCKS. Found this totally by chance while researching a place to go that was open after 9:30pm, which is apparently a chore in the Carmel area. Although it's a bit out of the way from downtown (you'll spend 25 to 30 getting here) it's worth going to even if you're closer to some 'other' pizza place. Hell, it's worth it coming from Chicago. That's right, I rate this over Chicago (and I lived there). I haven't read all the reviews but I'm sure folks have mentioned - they source a good amount of their food locally. Not only that, everything is obviously cooked to order, and there are tons of specials and off menu items. Don't be afraid to ask what's gong on that night, you'll get a laundry list of "burberry" like options. Others have said it, but start off with the breadsticks. Bloody fantastic. Not on the menu, but deserves to be in front of everyone. The Pizza - had the Old Kentucky Rome which was on the "Pizza Bianca" section of the menu, this was a recommendation from the waiter (who, also, was Bloody fantastic, knowledgeable on wine and pizza, funny and fast (though not rushed, even for near closing time). This pizza consisted of Kentucky Cured Prosciutto, Rosted Figs, and Taleggio. There is NO red / pizza sauce, and by god it didn't need it. Every bite was like taking a 20 foot triple backflip dive into heaven (though who are we kidding, I'm probably not going there). And like Zoinks Scoobs!! couldn't stop with just dinner, had to also have dessert. And dessert was grander than a scooby snack. While they were out of gelato (again, it was late, I can't blame em) - the Sorbet was awesome, and about 90 times the size you get at a fancy indian restaurant - and left always wanting more. This satisfied. The entire place was bombastic, and I will most certainly get back there asap to try more el-fabulous pizzas. read more

This place is disappointing. I've been here twice now, and the prices for wine are way over priced. The bar doesn't have a full selection so twice I've ordered drinks and I have been shot down due to alcohol selection. I've tried the pizza and I'd rather eat at pizza king, Pizza Hut or papa johns than have this pizza. Just overall I'm disappointed. This place does not meet my expeditions for a local place when I can go to a franchise pizza joint and be much happier. read more

I'm torn ... Hubby and I went there yesterday for a Sunday afternoon-wrap up the weekend-try a new restaurant experience. Good beer on draft, good wine selection. I liked the chop salad, husband didn't care much for it ... for some reason there were green olives in the salad but no mention of them on the menu. The dressing was nice and tart. Our pizza ... (insert sad face) was burnt. Not overly brown but black. Black bubbles covered about a third of the pizzas crust and their were random places on the bottom of the pizza that were burnt. EWWWWW! We were both shocked that they served us the pizza in the condition that it was in but because the did serve it we figured it would be be ok. W R O N G! We liked the atmosphere ... looked like there was outdoor seating (always a bonus since they seem to be lacking in Carmel) We'll give the place another try ... trying the sausage with red sauce. read more

I could eat pizza for every meal. When I had to fill out my profile, pizza was an easy call for my last meal. I love it. Remember the scene in American Pie with Jason Biggs and an apple pie? I've considered reenacting that scene with pizza. As big fans of L'explorateur (and pizza, obviously), we were anxious to try Neal Brown's place in Carmel. We didn't experience the problems with service, or our fellow pizzaheads, that others have mentioned. It was crowded and the speed and courtesy shown by the hostess and server were as I would expect for a full house. Yes, the beer selection was decent but I stopped being impressed by that a long time ago. It's not uncommon now to see holes in the wall with Bells, Stone, Founders, Sun King, etc. I've seen cheap hotel bars with great beer selections. On to the pizza. I really liked the crust. To me, you have no shot at making a good pie if you screw up the crust. Too soggy, bready, or bland and you've lost me. This one was spot on. The rest, however, was completely forgettable. In fairness, we did get veggies only and I have since been told that meat is the way to go here, especially the sausage. Perhaps on another trip. We don't go to Carmel often, for various reasons, but I'm not going to join in on the attacks. I've always thought it was petty and silly when Carmelites take cheap shots and look down their nose at southsiders so I'll let others partake in that pastime. All in all, although I thought the experience was average, I'm of the belief that an average pizza experience is better than a good experience with most other foods so I'll give it another shot. read more

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I truly do not understand the love that people seem to have for this pizza. The toppings are fresh and delicious. The sauce options are good. But the crust is always burnt, and clearly not on accident. Why is that?! Do people think that makes it gourmet or authentic? After trying the place a few times, we've just given up having pizza here. HOWEVER, the service at both locations we've been to (this one and the West Clay restaurant) has always been fabulous with very nice, helpful servers. Busy Friday night--that place was packed early! Solid, authentic Italian pizza. I love that they use fresh, local produce whenever possible. i was looking through yelp for a pizza place when one day my wife and i had the craving to eat pizza. I stopped by there on a saturday afternoon and we ordered the saint which is a pizza with white sauce. my wife being a big fan of thin pizzas was very happy the way the pizza was. the crust was cooked to perfection and the toppings tasted delicious. there are very few places that make the pizza good enough that the crust is also taste just by itself and i thought that this place was one of them. just as a side note their service was pretty good too. their staff was cordial and knowledgeable about their drink selection and food. Being a big fan of beer i loved their beer selection and they always do have local indiana beer. Since that first time i have been there 2 more times. after having experienced many other pizza places in indy i can safely say that this place is among the best in the city for its quality and "authentic" style. Pizzology was everything I thought it should be and everything it clams to be. The food is honest and tasty. The place is busy and loud and feels like a neighborhood restaurant. Go on the weekend and try one of the gnocchi specials. They're appetizer portions but they're tasty and creative. The house-made sausages are terrific. If you want a fun, creative pizza with a bit of old world charm, this is the place. The room is unassuming and the large window lets patrons watch as their pie is cooked in a real wood fired oven. Pizzology is a place I could take my wife on a date to (we were their for my birthday) or take the family without fear of my kids being too loud. Our friends had been raving about the new pizza joints in town, so when we found ourselves on the north side we thought we'd stop in and try a slice. We were originally sat inside next to a table with four babies but moved outside because it was just too loud. After a long day of work I needed some quiet. Sat outside on the patio and it was much more relaxed - sans the fellow who wore so much cologne you could taste it in the air. Ick. We ordered our own pizzas just to try something different. I ordered mine with fancy bacon (it doesn't say bacon on the menu, so be prepared to ask what some of it is). They don't have chicken or green peppers on the menu, FYI. Added some ricotta and spinach. My other half ordered it with prosciutto and the white sauce and mushroms. Mine: Burnt crust, the ricotta literally turned into a sauce that melted everywhere and made the pizza soggy and they forgot the spinach. Hubby: Whew! That garlic sauce they have is absolutely kicking. I mean I don't think I've ever had a garlic sauce that...garlicky. It was so overpowering it made me nauseous. Prosciutto was okay. Fresh mushrooms were added after the pizza was done cooking so they weren't soggy and for those who don't like the mushrooms you can pick them off. Breadsticks were okay. Doughy, but I felt like something was missing. Salt, perhaps? Very bland, as were the sauces. They have rootbeer with cane sugar, which was good. Overall, it was okay, but I'm not in love. I don't know what the deal is with eggs on pizzas, but they offer that on the menu. Wide variety of local and organic options. I'd recommend going out on a limb and ordering something you wouldn't normally get to try it. Tip: Steer clear of that white sauce unless you want to be single for a week. read more

The pizza was seemingly decent if not a bit pricey, but not too bad. The local beer choices are few, unimpressive and way overpriced. I didn't care for the salad, but others in my group said it was OK. The seating is cramped, almost bumping elbows with those seated nearby, and ambiance and atmosphere lacking. I like pizza, but not this pizza. Too hipster for me. Being from Chicago I think I know a thing ot two about pizza. The location is a little hard to find, it's back off the road in a strip mall type building but it's very cute and cozy inside. The porch is nice because it's screened but you still get a good breeze. We went with a group of 7 and they were very accommodating. We had the breadsticks which are a MUST, the cheese sauce has some kind of magic dust in it. Our table had the wood fired mushroom risotto, the white devil pizza, and the homemade sausage pizza. Popular, upscale, wood fired, flat bread pizza joint. You'll have to wait to be seated during prime time many nights of the week. I loved the thin crust and the unique, fresh ingredients topping the two person serving "pie". And my warm spinach salad was tasty and topped with a poached egg. Not bad at all. The service seemed off. Although the food arrived quickly, the servers seemed aloof and spaced out. Still the best and most exciting pizza in Carmel. Great Pasta dishes, sufficient wine list and high quality liquors. Freshness is the keyword here. They make their own Sausage and Mozarella. They use many local ingredients and the attention to quality is matched by fee restaurants of any kind in the area. A Very comfortable and casual setting with attentive sincere service go great with the food. We had the Papparedelle Bolognese, the Nduja pizza and the Lombardy on this visit. This is my new favorite place in Indy. Local food, local beer. It's fresh and you can tell. We tried the off menu Gnocchi appetizer and it seriously was an explosion of flavor in our mouths. The service was outstanding. They were training a new hostess so that was a little hectic but I really cannot complain. We wish there were another one in downtown Indy or the East side as that is close to our house. This place could double its size and I think it would still be packed. We love you Pizzology. The place seemed a little aloof when we first went in, don't let that turn you off. The warm ricotta is amazing! Seriously, this is not to be missed, the fact that it only comes with 5 pieces of bread is a bummer though (you can purchase more). This place was recommended to me by several people so I thought I'd give it a try. HOLY LOVE OF PIZZA! My friend and I debated on what to try as everything looked good on the menu. We opted for the zucchini fritters to start and they were so fresh and you could actually tell they were made from zucchini. Our server was phenomenal-he was able to answer all of our questions and described the wines they had very well. We went with the Carni Rossa for the pizza and the flavors were all so delicate and just made my mouth do a little dance. I had to forgo the third slice because I wanted to try the gelato-so glad I did! I had the Banana Caramel Praline and it quickly became one of my favorite desserts ever. My friend ordered the Tiramisu and I must say, even that was fantastic. I will definitely be going back! read more

No doubt, one of the best places to get pizza in Indy. They serve Neapolitan style pizza and you have an option if you want the tomato based sauce or white sauce. Their signature pizzas are delicious that its hard to imagine creating your own. It's tucked in a shopping plaza and its pretty hidden. Oh yeah baby! Five freakin' stars for their Old Kentucky Rome. I would like to say I was willing to share a slice of my pizza to try what my friend ordered but I wasn't about to give up a single morsel. I loved their dough which I thought had a hint of honey. Went with the house salad, the porchetta pizza with arugula and the side cars. Everything was amazing. The lemon vinaigrette was perfect. The garlic fondue side car was heavenly. Went here for lunch last week - was excited to try it and surprised by our lackluster experience. Maybe lunch isn't their best time - because our experience was so different than many of the other reviews posted. Service was slow (and it was pretty empty), and the food was disappointing. My pizza had a very distinctive smell (hate to say this - but smelled like feet), and my husbands spaghetti was ok. Was pretty pricy for what we got. The breadsticks appetizer was good! I'd consider trying this place for dinner with with or beer - but Won't have lunch here again. read more

I was craving pizza on Saturday and while out running some errands, my fiancé and I decided to try Pizzology. We were there around 6pm and though there weren't not any tables available, we did get a seat at the pizza bar so we got to watch all of the pies being made that night. We started off with a drink though I was wanting a Riesling (which they don't have) and settled for a glass of pinot grigio. The waiter brought us the wrong drinks at first but quickly got us what we ordered. We decided to order the homemade sausage pizza and an order of bread sticks even though we didn't see those on the menu. Maybe we missed that but I don't see them on line either. My fiancé noticed some cooking in the oven and they came with a delicious garlic cheese sauce and a flavorful marinara. When they brought the bread sticks they told us our pizza was up next so we could watch it being made. It came out shortly and it was wonderful! Full of flavor and tasted very fresh. The waiter was nice enough to credit us for the break sticks (for the drink mix up) which we appreciated. The mix up wasn't a big deal but I appreciate the effort for making it right. I would suggest going early because it was pretty busy when we left. I noticed they had a lot of out door seating but I'm sure that's not being used for now since it's so cold out. read more

Update 11/7/14 ... Phoned in a pizza & breadsticks order @ 6:40 and asked that it be ready @ 7:30 ... I get there and they act as if they've never heard of my order ... Then they try to say I didn't call the Carmel location ... Finally they admit that their computer system is messed up!!! Then they take my order and say they'll "rush it" ... But no offer of even a free soft drink while I wait, no manager came out to apologize... @ 7:50 I asked the hostess how much longer and she left to check and came back and then ignored me ... I finally asked to talk to the manager (tick tock) after ANOTHER 9 minutes the manager came out and said a bunch of orders came in along w/ mine ??? He did, however, say that he was reversing the charge on my card & the pizza was free. So I bumped up this update from 1 star to three... I love this place. It's one of the only reasons that will get me to drive from my place downtown Indy all the way up to suburban hell... I mean, Carmel. We happened to be in Carmel visiting friends today, so there was already a built-in excuse to have dinner at Pizzology. We started with the fresh mozzarella salad with cherry tomatoes, capers, garlic and arugula. It was excellent, very cool and refreshing on a hot summer evening. We then moved on to the wild mushroom and olive pizza. Top notch, as usual. What I really like about Pizzology's pies, is that they are simple with high quality ingredients. Everything has its place on the pizza-- and the unique flavors work in concert with each other. It's not a glob of cheese and sauce with a bunch of crap thrown on top. The crust is fresh-- and made with flour imported from Italy. We have been here once before and had the sausage and fresh fennel pizza-- also excellent. We also tried to grilled romaine with fresh goat cheese, which was a different touch than what we've seen around town and also really good. All in all-- an actual oasis of cool in Carmel. I brought a friend here to try it out with me. Our experience was not great at all. We both ordered the White Devil pizza. The garlic fondue sounded amazing but we could barely taste any garlic on the pizza! It was a thin crust pizza with barely any toppings. The cheese had hardened as if it had been cooked too long and made the pizza super dry. To fix this, we got sides of marinara sauce. Guess what? They charged us $1 per each tiny cup of marinara sauce (which was basically good for only one slice of pizza). Completely ridiculous! Waitress didn't even tell us they cost extra. Next time we'll go somewhere where they actually give us good tasting pizza and not overcharging us. read more

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Indianapolis. The pizza is incredible, so much so that I have tried every kind listed on the menu and have never been disappointed. Most of the time they have specials going on, which usually feature seasonal local ingredients, which I would highly recommend always trying. Again, the specials have never disappointed.
