Super disappointed in our experience. We picked out a used mattress in the store, which was in great condition. Upon delivery, we noticed one of the corners was covered in a black grease. We called the store and the only resolution they could offer was to exchange it and us pay a $70 re-delivery fee again. That's ridiculous. That would mean $140 in fees for delivery. The salesperson made it sound like he was doing us a favor by exchanging it. We should not have to pay the delivery fee again for something that happened on their end. This was the third mattress we've bought from PJs and will never buy from here again. In response to the shop's response- the mattress didn't have markings when we looked at it in the store. Obviously we wouldn't have bought it if it did. Not sure how not wanting to pay a high delivery fee twice is trying to get something free. read more

This discount mattress warehouse (I'm using the term discount mattress specifically because a search for "discount mattress" on Yelp doesn't bring this place up for some reason, while the equivalent search on Google - discount mattress portland oregon - brings it up second) is the type of place that sells high quality used, warranty returned, and slightly damaged items for 1/10th to 1/5th what you'd get them for new. The storefront you walk through is tiny - the warehouse beyond is enormous and has one of the largest selections in the Portland region. There are obvious drawbacks to the paper thin margin business model - the employees don't display any sign of interest in being there and specifically don't care about giving you much help prior to your purchase, as other reviewers have noted. But when I ordered a mattress and something went awry, and they got right on fixing it, going above and beyond that same afternoon so I was not obliged to wait. The customer service once you're an actual customer is on top of things - moreover, it's important to know how a company will handle something going wrong. I'll definitely buy from this warehouse again. Note for those wary of bedbugs - you can buy zippered enclosures that block allergens, mites, and bedbugs for any size of mattress these days. (HomeGoods sells zippered enclosures at significant discount but their stock varies and they may not have the size you need.) read more

I have had this shop recommended by multiple friends around Portland, and they steered me right. Now their showroom isn't all schmancy like the big mattress places... rather, it's kind of a hole-in-the wall warehouse. Personally, I prefer this because in my experience, these are the best types of businesses: focused, to the point, and no frills. We started off talking about my budget and what I was looking for (size & firmness). Jeremy led me straight to a memory foam mattress that was quite nice and well within my price range. Not being the sort to buy the first item I'm shown, I asked to see some other options. After looking at a few others, he asked me to try a hybrid that was just slightly above my price range. He nailed it. Given that this was an investment I intend to use for the next many years, it wasn't a hard decision. I was happy with my purchase at PJ's even though my initial experience with Daniel was not great. I felt like I was walking into a used car lot when dealing with him. As someone who works in sales, I realized pretty quickly that he was more interested in maximizing the store's profit versus finding me the right mattress at the right price. Fortunately, PJ's has another sales manager by the name of Wences who turned things around. He went out of his way to find the right mattress for me and at a great price! He was knowledgeable, patient, and honest in his interactions with me. He was the complete opposite of pushy which made my mattress shopping experience enjoyable. I highly recommend that you purchase your mattress from Wences. He works at PJ's on Wednesdays and Thursdays. You won't be disappointed! I'm writing this after my second (or possibly 3rd- too long ago to remember) purchase of a mattress from PJ's Sleep Shop. And the only reason I'm purchasing a mattress after my last purchase 4-5 years ago is my current full-size mattress is too small for my myself, my husband, and our 2 dogs who insist they need to sleep with us so I purchased a king. (Don't misinterpret- I love snuggling with the dogs and hubby- and now we can all fit!) The prices can't be beat! The mattress/box spring set I just purchased retails for twice the cost of the PJ's price! The store has a lot of selection so if you are not sure exactly what you want, employees are there to explain the pros/cons of the different types/brands of mattresses. The delivery fees are incredibly reasonable. I never had to use the 30 day exchange, but it's great that it's available. Another plus- Daniel the manager is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, honest, and best of all, not pushy in any way. He is deft at juggling multiple customers in the store (my observations) which is not easy, coming from a retail background. I also learned today that Daniel can repair hollywood frames and can sell spare parts so you don't have to buy a whole new frame when one piece breaks. I've never purchased any furniture from PJ's Sleep shop other than the hollywood frames, but there is a decent selection of head boards and foot boards, night stands, dressers, etc, with several matching sets. I've seen lots of affordable options there made of real wood and not particle board; and it's hard to find affordable real wood furniture anymore. In sum, PJ's is what I recommend to friends/family living in Portland looking for a mattress, and I will continue to be a customer as long as I live in Portland. read more

I've been coming here for years because the customer service WAS so great. NOT ANYMORE. I spoke in person to a very helpful kind young man who was patient and informative yesterday. Today I called to order and arrange delivery to a different person over the phone. When we reviewed the cost he told me he took $25 off since I didn't get the box spring. However yesterday the helpful guy told me $40 off. When I told him that he yelled ..."well I'm the manager and he does what I say!! It's not $40 off it's $25 off!! And it's not my problem if my employees say something wrong!!" Umm yes it is actually HIS RESPONSIBILITY AS THE MANAGER to honor that. He said ...that's not my problem, it's his. Then he told me good luck and HUNG UP ON ME. IM A MANAGER TOO BUDDY AND LOOSING $400 Over $15 because you can't calmly apologize and take the $15 off due to your egotistical pride is absurd. I feel so sorry for the nice people who work for you. And anyone else who encounters your anger problem. Too bad. You're loosing a lot of customers. When I left this place, mattress on the back of our truck, I gave the owner a high five and told him I was going to yelp him. Badabing. Here's why: How rare is it to go to a place these days, no matter *what* you need and get good service *without* 1.) being upsold while there, 2.) being preached to or 3.) having someone ask you at the cash register at the very last minute when you think you have all you need, "do you need a warranty with that for another exorbitant amount of _________, etc?" I loved this place because I got there 15 minutes before they were closing & the guy yelled a great big hello from across the larger warehouse space & then came over and if I were him, I wouldn't have liked me because when he asked what I was looking for in a mattress, I told him I wanted "the cheapest one you can possibly manage that doesn't feel like a board and is maybe slightly comfortable too" and instead of him cringing at the worst kind of customer (one that doesn't make him a whole lot of money) he nodded and brought me to a section of mattresses and pointed to it and gave me the price with or without the box spring and I laid on it and paid for it within 2 minutes and he strapped it atop our truck & we were out of there before they even closed by 6. He even told us a story about his tying knots while we waited for him to secure it. No fuss, no dragging on about a better mattress being better, no schpiel about a cover that'd help with blah blah blah, just good service and a great sense of humor and out in time for dinner. I feel like I won the mattress lottery with PJ Sleep Shop! And Francisco was awesome. Very friendly and super helpful. First of all, do understand that they have factory seconds and close outs. Which means they have deals with the big mattress companies to buy their older models or ones that have slight blemishes. But they are new beds. They also have used beds for super cheap. Do some research and see what they go for at big name retailers. I got a hand made queen Aireloom hotel collection mattress for under $800 that was originally made for Macy's and retails for over $8000. I mean, what?? That's insane! It's literally the most amazing bed, ever. I also got a used Loom and Leaf for my guest room that looks absolutely brand new for only $210. They deliver efficiently for $50, too. I've long been slightly afraid of this place. It looks sorta shady from the outside and the cavernous, dark interior isn't exactly inviting. But after going to a bunch of mattress shops and realizing that I just couldn't bring myself to spend 4-digits for a decent mattress, we decided to check out PJ Sleep Shop and I'm so glad we did. Sure, it's not as comfortable and foofy as the regular retail places. It's a big, cold warehouse where the mattresses are all kept wrapped in plastic standing on bare concrete floors. But who cares? We found the exact same mattress we wanted to buy at a fancy place. Fancy price? $1400. PJ price? $400. And when I say that we found the same mattress, I mean the very same mattress. Same brand, model, everything -- and brand new, not refurbished. On top of it all, the service was great, much better than one would expect from a discount warehouse type place. The salesguy was very easy to work with, they delivered the mattress (carried it upstairs and all) and took away the old one. And here's the best part: after sleeping on the new mattress for a few nights, we decided that it was too soft. No problem. We picked out a new one, they came and delivered the new one, took away the old one at no charge. We've been sleeping happily ever since. read more

I recently moved to Portland (well, part time) and decided that I needed a bed. I went to PJ Sleep Shop with two friends partially due to the reviews I read on here. We walked in and saw that there was one man working there, helping two people. He didn't acknowledge us, come over at all or even say "I'll be right with you after I'm done with these customers." I decided to go with a Full set in a middle price range and waited. And waited. And waited. The man would not come over and help us. He finished with the other customers and made his way to the front register, ignoring us. I finally decided to go spend my money somewhere else. We walked by the front register. No greeting, no goodbye, no thanks for coming -- nothing. My friend decided to let him know that he had lost a sale due to poor customer service. When he told him, he didn't even apologize. Instead, he became defensive. I should have known better, since he was wearing a Bluetooth in his ear, but I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. What a fucking doucher. read more

First thing's first: Dennis is the man. My girlfriend and I walked in the door of the warehouse and he greeted us within thirty seconds. He was very helpful and informative. He gave us space to shop but made himself available in case we had any questions. Plus, he works hard. The guy delivers mattresses like it's going out of style and does it with a smile. We got a new queen sized mattress and box set for $299. We've been sleeping on it for the last two weeks and we couldn't be happier with the bed. It is a "Manhattan" in case you are wondering. It would have been a five star review except for the $25 delivery charge. Every other reviewer on yelp that got their mattress delivered mentioned free delivery. I was a little bummed about the $25 charge. The plus side, no sales tax in OR so I saved money there. All in all, I can definitely recommend PJ's. It's not the most glamorous sleep shop, but I wasn't in the market for glamor. I was in the market for a good mattress and that is exactly what I got! read more

We needed a box spring for the mattress in our spare room. PJ's is about 10 blocks from our place. We walked in and said we needed a queen box spring. The guy working the place said, "That's it?" He walked us to the back and pulled out just what we needed and said it was ours for 60 bucks. Sold. We asked about delivery, which is 40 bucks and would have been a few days' wait. But he was insistent that we had no need to pay the extra money. He assured us he could attach the box spring to "anything with wheels". Sure enough, a few minutes later, the box spring was attached securely to the top of our Corolla. From leaving our place to putting the new box spring down on the floor of the spare room, the whole thing took 10 minutes. Well done, PJ's. read more

THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO WHEN YOU NEED A MATTRESS IN PORTLAND!!! I remember shopping for my first mattress in college, and I learned the most important lesson: don't pay for their real estate; pick a store that has a warehouse and a small storefront office... Today I probably saved about 75% of the retail market value of my mattress. I've seen the model I purchased advertised for over $2000, and I just paid $400, out the door, including delivery. Went into PJs sleep shop yesterday, after having read all the very positive reviews and comments on yelp and elsewhere online. This was my first stop, and my last stop. Jason was super honest, very upfront, and very rapid to work with. We were in and out and probably under 10 minutes. Maybe 15 at the most. I tried the mattresses that I felt like trying, he laid down the ones I was also interested in, and in the end I was promised a king-sized mattress and box spring with delivery of a really great quality product for a great price out the door. Just found out our lease was approved, so I just headed back there to see Jason to finalize everything. He honored the deal from the day before without any issues, scheduled delivery for tomorrow, and took out payment right away. Looking forward to the probably perfect delivery tomorrow afternoon. When you want a high quality mattress but can't fork out the cash to get what you really really want.....you go to PJ. This is a place with high quality mattresses at a steal of a deal! Don't be fooled by the beat up sign out front or the strange feel of the wearhouse where they store the mattresses. You are sure to walk away with a great deal. I think I was in this place for about 15 minutes before I walked out with a king bed and box spring a whole lot more nice than I expected. The mattress was a vangerbuilt beautyrest. I got the mattress and box spring for $750! PJ told me to check the retail price online for the same mattress and it was a $2000 mattress. He told me that they would deliver the next day and that he promises 30 days and if you are not satisfied you can return the mattress no questions asked. He said that if I didn't like it he would give me a new one to try out. This is a GREAT policy. I mean it can be pretty near impossible to tell if you like a bed until you actually try it out right? Gave me a flat rate of $200 for mattress and box. I live in the neighborhood so I got free delivery and since I walked there, he drove me home as well. I came by today straight from after work to get a mattress since I've been sleeping on the floor since I moved to Portland. The sign on the door said they closed at 6 but when I got there minutes before 6 they were already closed!!! I looked inside and there was no one around at all; the lights were off. I knocked on the door but there was no trace of anyone even "closing up shop". For closing early I have decided not to come back to this store. They have lost a sure sale. I have purchased my last two beds from PJ Sleep Shop and I have to say that both experiences were easy and straight forward. If you are looking for a fancy show room, this is not the place for you. If instead you are on a budget (like me, a grad student) but want something good quality, PJ Sleep Shop is the best place in Portland. I can't say enough nice things about the man who helped me. He wasn't the owner (who helped me last time and is also very friendly) but he was so helpful and really understood what kind of mattress I was looking for. He was juggling a few other customers and answering the phone. He is the only person besides the owner who works the floor, and I really appreciated how well he juggled all that he was keeping track of. I have read another review where someone was upset that they weren't greeted right away and had to wait. To that person I have this to say... When you go to a "warehouse" place with low prices and only one person working the floor, please be respectful and patient. I think it is ridiculous to expect a local place like this to hire a bunch of people to work the floor and yet still keep their prices low. I would much rather be patient and get a great mattress for a good deal. Which I did.. $60 twin bed $185 for a full mattress, box-spring and frame. Cheap and easy, in a good way. I just moved to Portland and I came here for a bed because my friend suggested it. I decided on a bed in less than 5 minutes. $400 for a clean, firm, queen Sealy Posturepedic mattress and a solid wood platform bed frame. $40 bucks for delivery. Sales guy was very friendly and gave me restaurant recommendations for nearby eateries and the delivery guys were on time and speedy. Docking a star because my mattress smells horribly of bleach, I had read a few negative reviews concerning this but it didn't seem consistent. I would have liked a warning. I didn't have time to get sheets last night so I just slept on top of the mattress which was a big mistake. I woke up this morning feeling dizzy and nauseous like I was hung over for a few hours, I was actually concerned that I was suffering from some sort of acute inhalation poisoning from the cleaning chemicals (I think I may have rolled over during the night and had been sleeping face down). I'm going to let it air out with the windows open so it can disperse. I would advise PJs to let people know about this before they buy or poke some holes in the bags to let some of the bleach smell out over time. Update: I let the mattress air out for 24 hours after they removed the plastic bag and the smell dissipated. Let your mattress sit in a room for 24 hours with open windows and direct sun if possible. That did wonders for the bleach smell. read more

I was not sure what to expect from this place but was more than willing to try it out since I'm on a budget. Daniel, greeted me with a pleasant attitude and explained about the shop right away- full disclosure! Daniel helped me find exactly what I wanted and attached it to my vehicle with no issues. I realized after sleeping that night that it was not exactly what I wanted and when i called to further understand the exchange process, Daniel explained with ease. I brought back the mattress and got the very first one I had laid on- again, no issues! My only complaint is I wish there was more explanation of the mattresses I was testing out. I went in on a Thursday to see what they had to offer, mostly because I liked the name haha. The guy who greeted us was really helpful and I was able to narrow it down to two mattresses with his and my boyfriend's help. I went in the next day to purchase my bed and a different employee was there, but he was just as helpful when the mattress I wanted was gone already. Once he heard that I had been sleeping on couch cushions in my room he took pity on me and gave me a free frame and waived the delivery charge :D I was (and am) really grateful for his generosity and I'm thoroughly enjoying my new memory foam mattress! read more
