Our 2nd visit to Planta Queen (despite being dedicated meat eaters) was both a hit and a big old fat MISS at the same time. For the hit: the food at this restaurant is very good! To be very honest, I do not miss meat on the menu at all. Full stop! The food is tasty, interesting and filling. The flavors are full ranged and satisfying. To be fair, I - and the other 3 people who were with me - decided that the appetizers and rolls were better than the dishes that were meant to be main courses. In particular, we loved, loved, LOVED the Bang Bang Broccoli, the Red Dragon Rolls and the Fire Cracker Rolls! Our other main dishes were good, don't get me wrong, but we all agreed that the appetizers were the stars of this show. Next time we go to Planta Queen - and there WILL be another time - we will get a compliment of appetizers and rolls. I am quite certain that we will be happier that way! Now on to the big old fat MISS of our evening. The server was horrible (and I use that word specifically because the customer service was, in fact, horrible). From the very moment the server approached our table, bad attitude and snarkiness were evident. The server, Cris, did not listen to us, did not answer our direct questions, rolled his eyes when we asked for forks, walked away in the middle of asking questions, did not help with explanations about the food, was dismissive, spent as little time with us as possible and was basically just bad, bad, bad. Cris did not care at all about serving us. At first, we thought Cris's attitude was somehow his way of being funny, maybe sarcasm or a dry sense of humor. But, as the service continued to deteriorate, all 4 of us reached the conclusion that Cris was simply a bad server. At the end of dinner, Cris stacked up all the dirty plates & utensils right in front of me and walked off. No thank you, no have a nice night, no nothing! And, when Cris brought the handheld credit card machine for payment, there were again no niceties or thanks PLUS he stared at the screen as we entered the tip to see what it was. Seriously, Cris was the worst server I have ever experienced. Cris needs a new career choice. I will probably go back to Planta Queen. Probably. Because the Bang Bang Broccoli is so damn good. But I will only do so with a lump in my throat and I will make damn sure that Cris never waits on me again. read more

After a late flight, my coworkers and I stopped by PLANTA, which is conveniently located. Unfortunately, it took multiple attempts to get a server's attention, so when we finally did, we placed a large order all at once. In case it's not clear from previous reviews, this is a fully plant-based restaurant--here, "salmon" is actually carrots, and "chicken" might be cauliflower. While I appreciate tofu, I was impressed by their creative approach to using different ingredients. However, the execution fell flat. The bao was my favorite dish, but that was mostly due to the soft, pillowy bun. Overall, the food was overly fried or oily, and the flavors felt one-note. PLANTA Queen was an impromptu choice for me since it was so close to my hotel Yours Truly. I was eager to try it out because besides the name, you wouldn't guess it was vegan. The food was amazing and flavorful!! I ordered the Dragon Roll which I enjoyed so much I forgot to get a picture before demolishing it. Being a vegan restaurant, they had a substitute for traditional soy and eel sauce that still had a good taste. My favorite part of the meal was my entree - the Singapore Noodles. It was very filling and the curry base was delicious!! The onions and green peppers were a beautiful compliment to tie the dish together. For dessert I ordered the big cookie, which was the only item on the menu that I could distinguish as being vegan. It wasn't terrible, but I could tell the batter was messing something traditional which can be expected. Overall 9.5/10 experience. The interior was nicely decorated, clean, and it wasn't busy around 1:30 PM. I expected the sushi to be in a cute box as advertised since I ordered "the sushi box" but instead I got my variety of rolls thrown into extremely large containers containers and everything got mixed up since there wasn't enough in each container to keep it in place so it was like shuffled sushi rolls. Everything was INSANELY salty and I just had to throw most of it out because it was inedible. The watermelon inari that was supposed to be marinated and interesting just tasted like thinly sliced plain soggy watermelon on rice with no marinade or anything it was just odd. It just felt like nothing had any care put into it. I was so disappointed since I was excited to have some vegan sushi in the area that would be a reliable spot. Literally nothing was good. I recently went back to Planta Queen after a couple of years not going with three friends and had an extremely disappointing experience. While we were seated on time, the rest of our service was underwhelming, both from the kitchen and our server. Our food took a long time to come out; once the food did come out, my Singapore Noodles came with tofu; an order mix-up, as one of my friends got a side-order of tofu and the Singapore Noodles don't normally come with tofu. Additionally, another friend had clearly requested a poke bowl with no avocado, and the bowl came with avocado. We all shared the gyoza, which were fine. I split the Singapore Noodles and the Poke Bowl with a friend. The Singapore Noodles were disappointing this time, as they were thinner and had less flavor. The poke bowl was solid, if unremarkable. We all split the chocolate chip cookie and the toffee pudding for dessert, both of which were terrible. They tasted like grit and sand with minimal flavor. It may have been an off-night for Planta Queen, but I hope that they can get back to the quality level from when they first opened. From September 2023: A solid, if a bit overpriced, restaurant that happens to be vegan. I recently went with a few friends and were seated immediately at our reservation time. Our server was outstanding, and other than one person's dish being brought out a few minutes after everyone else's, we received good service. The restaurant ambiance is an undistinctive but upscale white-cloth table-vibe. My friends and I split the sweet corn dumplings, which were delicious. They had great flavor, crunch, texture, and the right filling-to-dumpling ratio. The dumplings were perfectly steamed with a great consistency. I ordered the Singapore Noodles, which were fantastic. Although expensive ($22), I got a good portion size and the dish had plenty of vegetables and good spice. I've been to Planta Queen at a few different locations, and every single time I'm impressed by the quality of the food. This time, we got the spicy tuna sushi roll, eggplant nigiri, summer rolls, and split a ginger salad--everything was fresh and flavorful. The service was excellent, and the staff helped us navigate the menu since everything looked so good. While the menu is largely plant-based, they also offer protein options, which is a great touch. We enjoyed the food but the service was just so bad! We had a 7:00 reservation, but there wasn't a table ready for us. We got a table by 7:15ish and it was easily 7:30 before we were asked if we wanted to place an order. The guy taking our order said he was 'just the water boy but our server was slammed so she sent him to ask if we needed food'. We put in a couple appetizers but he left before we could ask about drinks. 7:45 I walked up to the bar and placed an order for drinks as we still hadn't had our actual server come to the table. 8:00 I went back to the bar to see if the drinks were still coming. A runner dropped off plates but didn't clear anything. I had to chase someone down to pay my bill. I complained about the service but nothing was comped. Beverages: I started my morning with the Chaga Chai- a rich blend of organic chaga, turmeric, cinnamon, espresso. This drink can be compared to a warm hug, the one that lets you know that you're loved! Nadia mentioned that there were 9 spices in the drink and I tasted several of them with each sip. Note that these spices blended together perfectly to deliver sheer perfection! My second drink and that of my friend was the Fizz the Season- a Fall inspired mojito. Perfect balance of rum, apple cider, and a few other blended flavors. So enjoyable! Appetizers: For starters, my friend and I ordered the Bang Bang Broccoli...Well, this dish knocked me clean off my feet. SOOOOO SATISFYING! The broccoli was perfectly fried and not oily, a major win! And there was just the right amount of crunch and a richly flavored sauce...oooooo the sauce was divine! Main dish: I ordered the General D's Cauliflower and my friend ordered the French toast. Let me say this, while both dishes were scrumptious. The French toast was the BEST French toast I've had in a long time. It's the kind of brunch dish that will cause you to pause a conversation in order to focus on each bite lol our entire experience here was just that. The General D's Cauliflower was perfectly prepared. However, this dish is definitely a lunch or dinner meal and while it was quite early in the day, I should have ordered that French toast lol Dessert: Nadia convinced us to try the matcha cheesecake and honey, I'm so glad that we did! I almost forgot that I was eating a vegan cheesecake because the level of creaminess, the burst of flavors, and the nutty crust left a party in my palate. I was very intrigued by their spicy tuna hand roll that is made from watermelon. Yes, you heard that correctly ... watermelon! Once I tried the first round that I ordered I had to order about 2 more. The hand roll had the perfect amount of spice and flavor and my brain definitely thought that I was eating fish. We also tried the mushroom hand roll which I thought was just ok, nothing crazy. The firecracker wings I loved (crispy cauliflower). And we really enjoyed the truffle fried rice. For drinks we tried the 'Sake to me' but after seeing the size ultimately decided on just their wine options. Our server was friendly and very attentive the entire 3 hours that we were there lol. One of my favorite dishes of my childhood was the broccoli tempura at Soba-Ya in the East Village. I hadn't yet developed an appreciation for the flavor profile of buckwheat, so I primarily relied upon the universally-pleasing textures of deep fried crunchy broccoli to get me through dinner. Giving it four stars because this is my second time visiting and it was slightly better than the first. The place is cool and very made for an upscale date or hangout. It's a good vibe and the only thing that distracts from the environment is that the restrooms are down a long highway and it makes you think you are lost. We had Chandler helping us and while he was exceptional at the beginning, did get busy towards the end. We had run out of water and soy sauce twice and granted this was during the all you can eat sushi, it was a little disappointing to see so many tables with empty water glasses. We also ordered drinks and it seemed like they were either backlogged on making them or forgot. I saw someone get turned around with drinks that looked similar to ours. The sushi itself was excellent. The first time I found their food to be too salty and it did seem like they took feedback and changed their recipes. We tried all of the different maki rolls as part of their menu and everyone loved them all. Our favorite was the dragon roll and the least loved was the crab roll. The happy hour menu has a really solid selection of food and drink, with much of the food being marked GF, gluten friendly. Dietary Restriction Note: The GF stands for gluten friendly, so no gluten ingredients but yes cross contamination, warning to those with celiac. I mentioned my celiac again and she paused our order to go create a celiac friendly menu. The GF is a little misleading, as many of the dishes are just not actually easily modifiable to be totally gluten free. A large group of us came on a weekday at the start of happy hour (M-F 3-6pm). I will say that most of the group were not vegetarian/vegan; plant-based is usually a hit or miss for me. I got the lychee tini, firecraker wings, and ahi watermelon nigiri. My favorite thing was the firecracker wings: flavored well, and crispy, but a little too much batter. The lychee tini was good, but it's a very small glass, and tasted more like a mocktail. The ahi watermelon nigiri is a play on a tuna nigiri. It was a good attempt, but the texture of the watermelon cannot be changed. The sushi rice is also ok. It looks like a thin tuna nigiri, but it did not match flavor-wise. Drinks and food came all around the same time. At the start, we had a lovely female server who was very friendly, and funny. There was a change of servers while we were there, however we were not notified. Our new server Chris didn't introduce himself, and was not friendly, almost cold. We decided to leave early because of him, telling him that we were finishing up/done ordering: he then said that someone should have done their job and took away the menus then. All small plates were amazing, second time I tried the bang bang broccoli, and of all of the dishes that's always my least favorite, since the broccoli tastes mushy and the batter always doesn't seem crispy! The superior PLANTA! Without question, the dishes at this location are tastier and more unique. I have been here numerous times and I always sit at the bar. Tia is a great server and knows all the dishes so well. Everyone is generally nice, accommodating, and pleasant. The restaurant is beautiful inside and great for dates, brunches, or solo meals. Their sangria is bomb! Love love the bang bang broccoli, it is crispy but light. The ginger is not overpowering and melds well with the sauce. This is a perfect starter. I have also had the oyster mushroom bao, which is not bad but relatively small. I've also had torched and press roll, which is absolutely divine! The potstickers are okay. The queen caesar is so good! The dressing is flavorful and they give you so much kale and mushroom bacon. One of the best kale salads I've had. The Singapore noodles might be my favorite dish! Perfect blend of curry spicies with a slight pepper kick. A large entree--you will not be hungry after. Truffle fried rice is also very good however I think it needs a little more heat and acidity. Since it's a big dish I could only eat half. When I brought it home I added red pepper and a little more lemon. I do prefer my food to be a little spicy but I think this rice especially needs some acidic balance. Otherwise it's so yummy. The truffle is plentiful and gives depth of flavor. read more

Hands down the worst dining experience I have ever had in DC. Extremely rude staff. Would not recommend. My friends and I made a reservation a week in advance because we had heard good things and wanted to try this place. We arrived on time and had no issues getting seated, but then waited 20+ minutes before one of my friends had to flag a server down just to ask if someone could serve us. The server then came over and made a point to let us know that the person who was supposed to serve us had left, so he would now be our server, but with an attitude. Given that we were the ones who had been waiting, we were confused as to why we were being greeted like that. From that point on, he continued to be snarky, rude, and dismissive toward us, while we watched him serve the table next to us with perfectly normal manners. We ordered drinks and made it very clear that one needed to be a mocktail due to an alcohol allergy. Instead, he brought an alcoholic drink and told us it was a mocktail, which I now genuinely believe was done on purpose. It wasn't until halfway through the drink that we had to flag another server down to confirm the drink was not a MOCKTAIL. That is extremely concerning. On top of that, when the food came out, it was basically thrown onto the table with no care. I don't know what we did to receive this kind of treatment, but I will definitely be making sure no one I know ever comes to this restaurant. read more

We came here for a friend's engagement dinner and had a wonderful time! We split a bunch of the plates across five of us and it was a great spread. We ordered the baked crab roll, torched and pressed, 1000 layer crispy potatoes, bang bang broccoli, truffle fried rice, and general d's cauliflower. The bang bang broccoli, truffle rice, and general D's were our absolute favorites, but we thought all of the food was good! The server was super helpful in recommendations and efficiency! The restaurant was busy, but not too loud for all of us to hear one another, and the couple celebrating was brought a flaming candle with dessert! We will almost certainly be back! read more

A delightful experience. We just wish there were more options on the menu on the day that we went. They apologized as there was something wrong on the kitchen that prevented them from making certain dishes. So we got a salad which to my surprise, is one of the best salads I have ever had. We also ordered the spring rolls, which in flavor were delicious but lacking in rolling skills. The rolls were flimsy but the flavor made up for it. I think it was the sauce that came with it. For the little things that we did sample, I was impressed and would definitely go back. It's a trendy vibe on the inside. Not what I was expecting with a vegan establishment. Just imagine super tall and skinny models who are vegans who would frequent a place like this if it was in New York. read more

Planta's happy hour and Monday deals is such a gem--$8 sushi rolls on Mondays that are vegan and packed with flavor. I've honestly never had sushi quite like this before. They take familiar sushi flavors and give them a fun, creative twist to make them vegan. Each roll felt thoughtful and unique, and despite being all veggie, they were filling. That said, I do wish there was a bit more protein in the rolls themselves. Their full menu has plenty of vegan protein options, so it felt like a missed opportunity not to include some tofu, tempeh, or seitan in the rolls. Service-wise, it was a bit hit-or-miss. The restaurant wasn't very busy, but we still had to flag down our server a few times to order more drinks, food, and to get the check. That said, the food came out super fast, so I'd recommend starting with a few items and then ordering more as you go.
