The nachos - absolutely delicious! The cashew cheese and chorizo quinoa mixture: fabulous!! The pie - the crust was cooked perfectly and the flavors at top were in harmony. When you are looking for vegan and gluten free food, there are many options for one or there other. Many restaurants in NYC of course have vegan items and of course have gluten free items, however, the number of items that are both vegan and gluten free is always much lower than someone of this disposition would hope to find. If that is your main dietary restriction, Bar Verde is your bonanza of bountiful options. It was challenging for me to decide what to order and to eat all that I ordered. I am already planning when to go back and what I will order. While here for the first time, I gluttonously ordered and ate empanadas with non-soy based cheese that was super melty. The order is meant to share, but I ate all three. The other dish meant for sharing, I did share - the churros with chocolate sauce. This is a very popular dessert dish and well executed. The churros are cute little pieces about 4-5 inches long, and there are about 5 of them in an order. The chocolate sauce is rich and melty-licious. It is so good, I would definitely order just the sauce on the side. A little goes a long way, and we had plenty with this flavorful sauce for all our churros. The churros were perfectly cinnamon sugared, crisp, warm and soft on the inside. Amazing vegan gluten free churros, just amazing. I also ordered some cauliflower enchiladas that were covered in so much beautiful sauce, I lost the enchiladas. They were delicious, but, if you are focused on having mostly veggies for your meal, don't order what I ordered. They have bowls and salads that will meet those actual veggie palates. They have ceviche, nachos, a burrito, esquires (grilled corn salad), guacamole, croquettes, roasted potatoes, many tacos and many bowls. It's amazing that they can get the flavors so spot on - their "cheese" being butternut queso cashew cream is so amazingly legit. Bar Verde is right around the corner from our daughter's place, and it's margarita and nachos headquarters for us whenever we visit. This place was so disappointing. Just because you add a meat after a vegetable does not mean it is a substitute. You need to at least try. Ambiance: Honestly the vanilla candle in here was SO strong it messed with my senses while eating. Then they opened the door and cigarette smoke was drifting in. I was sitting in the very back and it was hitting me. Food: I got the mushroom carnitas tacos and would not recommend them whatsoever. Mushroom carnitas: 2/10 The mushrooms in no way resembled carnitas. Not in the taste or mouthfeel. The mushrooms I swear weren't even seasoned it was so bland. The saving grace was the fresh guacamole but it was otherwise not worth it. And I like mushrooms so that is not the issue here. My friends got the mushroom tempura tacos and nachos, which they seemed to enjoy. I will also call out that a lot of their dishes are meant to have this cashew crème (maybe 85% list it), so if you don't like cashews the taste won't be how it's intended and you may not like it. Bar Verde was exceptional with their twist on Mexican cuisine with everything being vegan and gluten free! With all the dishes we ordered, we couldn't tell it was just all vegetables. Let's start with the guacamole and it was simply fresh The drinks we ordered were massive and worth the NY prices. Spicy cauliflower enchiladas were phenomenal along with the Maitake Enmolada, which was purely just mushrooms that had the similar Umami flavor and good for my taste buds. Churros were a game changer knowing it was gluten free. The three stars rating is really a 3.8 stars because the space is small not spacious, service was good but our original waiter vanished after giving out entrees. I've been going to bar verde for years it was one of the best vegan restaurants in nyc. However, ever since the fire has accrued in the apt building above. They have merged both restaurants into one both zero and bar verde. I've heard they are no longer gluten free either. The service has gotten bad. Today I was there and I ordered chips and salsa and the waiter didn't even bother tell me that one of the dips was super spicy. For about 35 min my tongue was in rough shape. I don't eat spicy foods for a reason. When the waiter came out and wanted to know how I was when I told him I would have appreciated a heads up before hand. He's reply was I needed to figure this out for myself which one was hot and not ... really?! I sat in the patio for about an hr and not once did the waiter come back and ask me if I wanted another drink or if I was ready to place a food order? My table was dirty and I wasn't even offered utensils until I had to ask for it. read more

Bar Verde is a convenient place that is a great option for vegan Mexican Food. The vibe is really chill and they also have really great drink options both alcoholic and nonalcoholic. 1. Nachos (8/10): Decent amount but a great appetizer that can be shared with the table. The flavor was good. 2. Cauliflower Al Pastor (8.5/10): This is my favorite thing there! The flavors blended well and the cauliflower had a nice crunch in the taco. 3. Huitlacoche Flautas (8/10): The sauce and the rice and beans that came with it were so delicious. It was really filling and I still had stuff left over to bring home. It made for good leftovers. 4. Flan + Maple Syrup Caramel (7/10): The deserts were pretty good but did not stand out to me compared to the other foods. 5. Churros + Chocolate (7/10): Similar to the one above, it was good but it was still $10. It was a good food to end the dinner. I would definitely go back to this place. I remember when this place was called Bar Verde and exclusively served vegan Mexican food. It was so good and flavorful then but now they have merged the vegan pizza place next door (Double Zero) and rebranded as PlantMade I am disappointed. I knew the minute I got there the food would be meh. I almost missed the spot because the signage changed. I sat down and got a menu and asked about the rebranding. The server kindly supplied a diplomatic answer that now you can get pizza and Mexican in one spot. But the blandness of the menu--plain black and white print with no cohesiveness to it--the apps were Latin but the mains were Latin and Italian--told me the food was going to be mid. I seriously considered getting up and leaving as I sipped my water and read the menu--no coconut flan, no rice and beans dishes that I loved in the old Bar Verde--but I held out hope and decided on the empanadas and huitlacoche tacos with mango cheesecake. It was all mid. The distinctive huitlacoche flavor and purple hue was not there. The taco was flour instead if corn because the earthy maiz flavor was absent. The empanadas were hot and fresh but had no cheesy flavor as the menu promised. The mango cheesecake also had no flavor. TLDR: Nice servers but the food is overpriced, watered down and flavorless. read more

Weird vibe, and just some weird instances with the bartender/host, and some food that was a great, and others that were plain misses. A friend of mine and I came it at 3:30 on a Saturday (and it does not specify anywhere that brunch is until 4), but you can order the whole menu on uber eats, not just the brunch menu. When asked if I could order the full menu, and not just brunch, the host said no. So we said fine, we'll be back at the next reservation (4:30). We came back, and was greeted by the host and graciously seated. We ordered the nachos, spicy cauliflower enchilada, and onion mushroom quesadilla. The nachos were great, as were the enchiladas, but the quesadillas had no cheese, or onions, just mushrooms. Just very weird, and kind of bland. We were asked if we wanted dessert, and we opted to try the maple flan...except when it came the host/bartender/server brought it and we both audibly said, "We ordered the maple, not berry one," to which he said, "Oh yeah no it's berry today not maple." Despite the menu, uber eats, and our receipt saying maple. We very clearly did not want it, and he made it seem as if, too bad, we have to deal with it. It was a super warm day and their a/c wasn't working so we chose to sit at a table outside - - maybe it would have been better if their roadway dining space had a little more character but it is what it is. In a nutshell: Go for the drinks. Skip the food. Don't expect fast or comprehensive service. In More Detail: I loved Bar Verde and I loved Double Zero. Since the two merged, however, both the food and service have gone downhill. I really, really wanted to keep liking it and I am giving it 3 stars for the bar. The bartenders are great and the new cocktail menu is the one anchor to what they once were - it's creative, vibrant, fun, and spirit-forward. They can also make ALL the options mocktails and do so fluidly with plenty of flavor and delight. That's what they do right. Insofar as the food and service, though ... not good. The food? The guac has remained fine but the chips are often old and stale. The pizza crusts look and taste like shoebox cardboard. Pizza crusts should be easy. Is the chef tasting their creations? It doesn't seem like they are and they are serving what tastes like pre-frozen, pre-melted, re-frozen, re-melted microwaved leftovers in some cases. Some of the tacos are still fine, but the menu is hardly what it used to be and in the 4 occasions I've gone since the merger, either me or one of my companions ended up with quite a tummy ache afterwards (and not because we over ate or drank). **I will note one time we watched in horror as a bus-gal who had been serving us water used her same gloved hands to scoop up overflowing trash from the NYC sidewalk and jam it into a filthy trashcan and then continued serving beverages without changing her gloves or washing them. Yeah. That could cause a tummy ache.** The service? Not great. Other than the bar, the service is slow and clunky and every time the waiter forgets at least one thing (a drink, an appetizer, whatever). They're not rude or totally incompetent; just very, very slow and a little sloppy. It's not because the place is crowded and they're over-worked. To the contrary, all 4 nights have been pretty quiet with more than enough waitstaff. One night, the 4 waiters clustered together outside (where no patrons were sitting) gossiping while the 3 tables inside writhed with impatient patrons wanting to order, pay or get their food. PlantMade is not going to last long if they don't reinvigorate the cooking and re-train their staff on service and cleanliness. For old time's sake, I will go back for cocktails and I genuinely like the new cocktail menu a lot. I won't eat there again unless they really work hard to remedy the current situation. read more

I'm always on the hunt for good plant based food so imagine my delight when I came across another plant based Mexican restaurant while walking around in East Village. I was really impressed by how quickly we were sat and how quickly our first few plates came out. The standout for me were the nachos. Super hearty and satisfying. The empanadas and tacos were on the smaller side and came with 3 pieces which made it easy to share amongst our party of 3. While they were smaller than your average taco and empanadas, what was on the inside were fresh and flavorful veggies that filled us up regardless. This vegan restaurant and bar was pretty intimate. I made a reservation for 3, and we were seated immediately. Interior is dimly lit and gives more romantic vibes in the evening. We ordered the margarita pitcher, which was pretty good and relatively strong, and filled 3 cups twice. I ordered the broccoli fajita bowl with the cashew butternut dressing. This was delicious, and the portion size was very generous. The bowl came with three warm tortillas, and I was able to assemble some tacos. The sauce was creamy, and the vegetables cooked very well. I did not feel as if I were missing anything from the dish, which I often feel with vegan / vegetarian dishes. If you're looking for incredible vegan tacos, look no further than Bar Verde. I hesitated coming here for a long time mostly because they don't use mock meats and have a vegetable-focused menu (if you know anything about me it's that I love my fake meats and vegan junk foods, lol). Just one has me a bit too far gone, it was either a strong pour or that's how they make them 'round here...but no complaints. You must order their nachos: they are not only plated beautifully but taste incredible-they give Jajaja's famous nachos a run for their money! The tacos=outstanding. My favorites are the Maitake Tempura and the Brussels Sprout Tacos. My only complaint is that they do not do mix and match, which I would love to see change in the future: I don't want to have to order 2 full orders of tacos just to try all the tacos I want to taste. I ordered the fajita bowl which was a colorful, yummy and fresh combination of butternut queso fundido, jackfruit, corn, avocado, tomatoes, jalapenos, beans, red pepper and chips (but can come w/ tortillas as well). My husband had the nachos which he enjoyed but I liked my dish more. My brother and my cousin had the enchiladas which they both loved as well. I'm really looking forward to coming back here again. In terms of service, they were very friendly, accommodating, and attentive. I HIGHLY recommend this and will be bringing my vegetarian friends back!! The nachos are a must try! They have a unique cashew crema as a substitute for cheese and it is chefs kiss. The cauliflower tacos were flavorful and had a sour kick to it which I really enjoyed! Very filling and good portions. My friends got the Avocado Tostadas which she did not rave about too much. My latest Valentine's Day visit to Bar Verde was perhaps my third or fourth time to stop in. The food is always phenomenal and fresh. Service? Friendly and casual, yet reliably efficient. My boo and I shared the empanadas to start. I was really blown away by the filling of mushrooms with three (it think, or was it two?) unbelievably creamy vegan cheeses and pico de gallo. So good. I had the Spicy Cauliflower Enchiladas, which were truly delicious and served with a bowl of rice and beans. The sauce was perfectly tangy and the cauliflower was tender with still a bit of a bite. (ugh my photo of these came out terribly. trust me: they were magnificently plated!) The real star, though, was my BFs California burrito with mushroom carnitas. The burrito was gigantic and topped with an unbelievable mole sauce. For dessert, we shared the flan with maple syrup caramel. Great texture and just the right amount of sweetness. Never a bad meal at Bar Verde, and the atmosphere was friendly and lively - yet still chill enough that it was easy to have a conversation at our table. I look forward to my next visit! read more
