I am saved. I came here after reading a few yelp reviews. I have found a place with really good coffee that you can sit down and relax. I am basing my rating off of one review, but I always update up or down if required on places I visit multiple. I only had a cup of coffee but it was excellent. The person that waited on me explained the choices enthusiastically and genuine seemed to enjoy it and discussing coffee, she was not the typically overworked Starbucks or Other chain employees that just sees the customer as an obstacle to cleaning up. Again, based on only one visit so time will tell, but a great first impression. I went at lunch and the group of people was eclectic which I like. My impression of the environment was good, its a nice place with a modern feel. The location is south Toledo so its not in the outer suburbs, so it has a bit of an urban feel, but the place is worth a visit. We need more places like this in the Toledo area. read more

I've been wanting to try this place out since I saw it on Restaurant week. I finally was able to come today. For a coffee place, there are a lot of tables which is nice so that people can come and study. And the guy who helped us was friendly and patient with us while we tried to decide what to get. I tried the breakfast wrap which was good. I didn't really like the sauce that it came with though because it was sweet and I would've preferred something different to go with the wrap. But it was still good. The soup of the day was Inspirational, which I don't remember what was exactly in it besides a lot of different veggies. But it was pretty good. As for the coffee, my friend was excited that they had cold brew coffee. I just got a latte which was good but a little weak for my taste. But it was very smooth, not bitter at all. The interior is your basic coffee shop. We ordered 2 lattes to go (what I consider a small cup of coffee) and with a small tip it came to over $10. I do consider getting coffee a treat. I am not one of these people who spends thousands every yr getting coffee every day. I would much rather spend money at a small local shop than a chain but man... $10 seems steap, or maybe I'm cheap, or maybe both. They brew Mad Cap Coffee (Grand Rapids, Mi) exclusively. Literally everything is perfect. Staff are always super nice, bathrooms are superbly clean, and the coffee is top notch. The food menu is simple yet elegant and gourmet. It's all great. Plate 21 is the best coffee shop in Toledo and even northwest Ohio/southeast Michigan in my opinion! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! You walk in and it's always a super clean modern atmosphere. Great color and artwork. Not too cramped or noisy. Everything is fresh and there's lots of choices. I got to spend some time with the owner briefly and her passion for what she does is amazing and highly respectable. She sends some of her baristas to competitions and things like that. I think it's awesome. Every time I go there I walk in to a smiling face and I know whatever I order is going to be quality! The matcha frappe is to die for and their grilled cheese is awesome with fresh spinach and tomato. The coffee art on the top of my cappuccino always makes me smile! They've got wi-fi of course so it's a great place if you want to meet up with a friend or catch up on a good book! read more

A friend at work recommended this delightful little coffee house. I was really surprised to find this gem in the South End. The shop is clean, bright, quiet, and relaxed. The staff are very well educated on their craft. No other coffee house I have been to in the area does Latte art. I had a Mexican Mocha, not on the menu, but the barista had a fun idea and I'm adventurous...It was amazing. Also had a Double Chocolate Muffin which was also quite tasty. This place means a lot to me, it's such a welcomed addition to Toledo's south-side. It's easy to drive past, as it sits inconspicuously in a residential neighborhood, so it's a "hole in the wall". I've never tried the food, but they can just take all my money as far as I'm concerned because their coffee really is that good. One sip and it'll convert you. What a cool hip place. I came to plate 21 my first few days in Toledo to try and find some good coffee. I was lucky enough to find some great coffee here. They have many types of beans to choose from. Some fruity, some rich, some bold. I really think you will find what you like here. The colors are bright and funky. A recommendation from my sister brought me here for a quick bite. There is plenty of parking out front on the street, which is really convenient. This is the kind of place that the area needed - somewhere to meet your girlfriends for a cup of espresso, a neutral location to grab a sandwich with a casual date, or a place to come by yourself and have a leisurely latte while you read a book. The staff is friendly, the place is clean and bright. So why the low review? I would leave 2.5 stars if I could. The food leaves so much to be desired. Don't get me wrong, as a coffee and tea shop, they do so well. I had a delicious iced matcha and when I ordered it, the girl was nervous it would taste too "earthy" for me, and told me to bring it back if I didn't like it. That was nice of her, but it was really good. The issue was with the sandwiches. Specifically the veggie panini. I have never tasted a sandwich so bland and tasteless. It was full of carrots, had no sauce or seasoning, save for some havarti cheese, and seriously, SO MANY CARROTS. This sandwich is 80% carrots. There were supposed to be red peppers. There were maybe 2 small slices. To charge $7.50 for bread and carrots is truly a sin. They charge this much for the other sandwiches with meat. I would come back, but for the coffee and ambiance, but I would definitely skip out on the food. read more

Everything here is fresh and super super tasty! You have to try it out! A hidden gem that's for sure! I have not had coffee this good in an incredibly long time. The chai is made in house. The wrap was fresh, tasty and had a unique dipping sauce. Seems like everyone knows each other here. Plate 21 has a very Eclectic feel to it. It's very refreshing to find a place like this in Toledo. Really great coffees from MadCap and a skilled knowledgeable staff. First, I got a perfectly extracted shot of espresso which came in a cool little orange cup and had a creamy sweetness without adding any sugar. Then I had a grilled vegan wrap-style sandwich which was a little dry until I asked for extra humus. It was quite flavorful and more substantial than expected. The highlight was the drip coffee I took on my way out. There were several selections of single origin beans and the barista helped me decide, telling me about the farms they were grown on, the processing and flavor profiles of each one. I had on called Ardi, but I guess they change seasonally. I've never had anything like it in the toledo area. Also, fast free WiFi and tons of power outlets. read more

This place just has a comfortable feel to it. Good coffee with decent wraps and sandwiches. Quiet music in the background and a nice place to study or hang out. A steady stream of teachers , maybe from Beverly school down the road, came in and got to go orders. Sounds like they were getting their classrooms ready for the start of school in a few weeks. Matcha lattes are my favorite drink in the world. It's so hard to find them in Toledo, so I was thrilled to discover that matcha lattes and frappes were available at Plate 21! Their matcha latte was quite good, too! It wasn't quite as bitter as I'd have liked, but still very tasty with a nice head of froth. I got it with soy milk, along with a bagel and peanut butter (lactose intolerant), and I really appreciated that they had a non-cream cheese option. My husband got a regular latte and a turkey wrap, and he really enjoyed his brunch, too! We both liked the atmosphere and will definitely go there again. read more

I've been here twice now, and I was thoroughly happy with my service & drinks. The baristas are very knowledgeable about all of their drinks. They also are very artistic with how they prepare and present their products. It's always a sight to see! The soy chai was pretty good that I got, and today, I really enjoyed their soy mocha. I also love that not only do they offer almond milk, but they make it known that they do. Their seating is pretty decent for the size of the building and the decor is colorful land bright. Easy to be creative and productive in this environment. My only complaint is that I once had a ginger snap cookie that was way way way too sweet. I struggled to finish it! Also, parking was a slight issue both times due to the snow. Overall, this is a must-stop! read more

Just got a medium sized coffee (non pour over). I like that they have pour over options on like 5 different coffees (didn't get this though). Happened to get the last cup and a half with my friend (running out... minus points!) The coffee that I got wasn't good, but it wasn't bad (2 stars). It's nothing special or unique. My family, friends & I all frequent Plate 21! It's a favorite of ours. The atmosphere is great. The baristas are great! The owner is Great! & of course the coffee/tea & food are great too! I recommend the Matcha Green Tea Latte (chilled). Don't let the green color scare you - it's delicious & addictive! I also recommend the Starry Night Latte. The Chai Latte & Mochas are good as well. If you want something to eat, their soups, grilled cheese, muffins, & oatmeal are all wonderful! I do wish they were open later in evenings & on Sundays. read more

I was treated like I didn't belong and sure it was becasue of my color. I asked one of the employees about pasteries because I wanted a treat with the tea I brought. She acted as though she did not want to serve me and she was very distant and disconnected from being kind and pleasant. I didn't appreciate that and no one should be treated that way but thank God I know who I am, and their coffee is cringe worthy. Not a place I will be visiting again. They say one person won't bring a business down, but if you act the same to a few or alot, your business will be up for a year or two when others are up 50+. read more

One of the most unfriendly coffee shops I've ever been to. There is one staff member who is very friendly, but I don't go in enough to know if she's still working there. This shop is right by my house, so I go there out of convenience occasionally. My experience is the person on register will basically just stand there waiting for me to order, and I know it's not an obligation to engage in small talk but usually when someone asks how you are, you give some sort of a reply.
