Made reservations for 5 for Brunch last week, I arrived about an hour before our reservation and ordered bottomless mimosas at the bar. The bartender was kind, friendly, funny; had an awesome time waiting for the rest of my party to arrive. When they did arrive it turned out there were 6 of us, but no worries, they got us a nice large table on the patio. With 6 people in our party, we ordered 6 different meals from the menu, when they arrived every plate looked amazing, like works of art. The looked amazing, and tasted even better, everyone in our party absolutely loved their food. I got the French Dip and it was super tasty. Our server was friendly and fast, the whole experience was just class all the way. We were all from out of town, and I had done some research to find us a nice brunch spot, the entire rest of my party congratulated me on a job very well done of picking the brunch spot. 10 out of 10 will go back and will recommend to anyone looking for brunch in Pasadena. read more

It's been a bummer during Covid seeing all the old spots closed down. Rolling down main streets and spot after spot closed or recently had a terrible experience there due to lack of staff or fresh food. Plate 38 was a flash back to 2017/2018 when I used to go out much more. Those days my go to on the menu was Chicken wings and a Cesar salad with garlic shrimp. This past Monday for lunch I had some time to waste due to a power outage so we did the whole 9 yards. Appetizer, drinks and lunch! Service is amazing, shoutout to Leah for being so kind and hospitable. Everyone is very nice here. Leah gave us the best recommendations. It's a fun ambiance, place to come on a date or with family. I highly recommend the steak and eggs and the salmon Rosti. We also got the honeymoon and mystic oysters, yum! Will be back to try their famous French toast, we simply didn't have room. Then the person taking care of of said our fries we order were coming, another 15 mins and we decided to leave. The decor in this place is super cute, especially the festive lights that are so common throughout Pasadena. It looks really classy. I had the Salmon Salad, my friend had a burger and garlic fries, while my other friend had Lox. My salad was alright. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. My friend said her burger was dry and she said it usually tastes really good, but today was not the day. My other friend who had the Lox said it was "meh", she gave it a 6 out of 10. The chairs were a bit uncomfortable and the table was wobbly, so that was a little annoying. The service was good, and over all it was an ok experience. I have always wanted to try this place, but never did until today. I had the IPA and that was standard and good. I've been going to Plate 38 for about 10 years now and I've never had a bad meal or bad service. If this weren't the case, we wouldn't be returning for the past 10 years and with such a frequency. We visit the restaurant several times a month and we've been here for just about every ocassion with different size groups and for lunch dinner and brunch. The food is excellent and the service is second to none. The meat are the best cuts and frsh. Very friendly atmosphere and unassuming. At times we sit at the long wood bar or we sit in the regualr dining room area. It's not a large place, I would say maybe 20 to 30 tables plus the bar and a few high tops. I've had about everything on the menu, but chef Robbie comes up with special dishes from time to time. They have a full bar with an excellent bartender and a very nice selection of wine. I recommend making reservations as it can get extremely full and busy. I have been driving past this place for years. I had a friend recommend it recently, and so I went last week with a friend. We were early diners so my reservation through Open Table wasn't necessary. My friend loved her tomato soup and 1/2 grilled panini - so much so she wished she had the other half. I had the grilled flank steak with asparagus and garlic fries. Steak was perfectly cooked and I liked the peppercorn sauce. Just not enough of either on the plate for the price point. It was piled high with fries. Those little fries were supposed to be garlic fries, although I didn't taste much garlic. WAY TOO MANY fries. (Since when is that a problem, right? LOL) Brought my own wine. Corkage fee is $20. They do have happy hour cocktails and small plate items. They still have a large outdoor dining area set up, although it was not in use on a week night. I will come again. read more

We had our second meal at Plate 38, though to be honest we didn't remember being there the first time and were only reminded of it thanks to our check-in app. (Apparently we had Mothers Day Brunch here a few years ago.) Not sure why that first experience left our brains but our dinner this time around was fantastic. We started with the grilled artichoke appetizer which was delicious. The artichoke was nicely charred with a lemon vinaigrette and came with a good dipping sauce. We had it without the parmesan cheese to accommodate a dairy-free eater in our party and it was quite flavorful even without this. My wife had the Baby Gem Lettuce Salad which she also thought was delicious. It was nicely plated and had a nice variety of flavors and textures. My vegetarian choice was the Grist & Toll Creamy Polenta. This was Super tasty with cheese on top and extra flavor from the tiny olives in it. Honestly this was more flavor than polenta should be allowed to have. I also had the Truffle Mushroom Bisque (a chalkboard special not on the regular menu, and also another vegetarian item.) This had perfect flavor with that extra special taste of the truffle without it being overwhelming (It's so easy to overdo truffle oil in things.) This was served with little mini crostini style grilled cheese sandwiches with a super-tasty good sharp cheese in them. Yummy on their own and divine dipped in the bisque. We were seated on the patio on a cold night which concerned me at first as I'm not a fan of experience the element while dining, but their heaters did the job and I was perfectly comfortable. After hiking at Eaton canyon you work up an appetite. Decided to come back to plate 38 and see what else they have for breakfast. Was not disappointed. I ordered the 3 meat scramble, came with onions, bell pepper, mushrooms, scramble eggs with bacon and sausage. I said no to the ham. Everything was cooked perfectly and tina of veggies. For our sweet portion of it we had ricotta pancakes, so fluffy and delicious! It really didn't need the syrup. Service was great and you get the option to sit outside or inside. What a pleasant surprise! We were driving from Santa Barbara to Palm Springs, we were hungry for brunch, and a quick search of places open with outdoor seating during COVID led us to Plate 38. I ordered a mimosa, which arrived looking like it was all juice, but it made my tummy nice and warm pretty quick. One led to two led to three, and since the bottomless price was cheaper than the price of three individuals, our server switched me over to the bottomless, which was super nice of her. I behaved, and cut it off after the third, but let me tell you, that's a good deal. My partner and I split the buffalo wings and the smoked salmon with potato pancake. The wings were amazing, they were confit instead of fried, so super tender and just fell off the bone. The Buffalo sauce was some of the best I've had outside of Buffalo. They were served with chunky blue cheese on the side that was almost the texture of pub cheese or cream cheese, which actually made it easier to scoop and share than when it's dressing consistency. Definitely order these. The smoked salmon came out split for us on two plates, which was a nice touch. This was a tasty dish, not spectacular but good. I could have used a bit more salmon and while my pancake had a good mix of soft potato goodness and crispy edges, my partners was just crispy edges, to the point of losing flavor. Overall, I was pleased, especially considering we did no research and chose the place because it was near the exit and took reservations! If I lived locally, I'd definitely return. read more

This unassuming restaurant will surprise you. There is a banner on the roof that touts an oyster on the half shell happy hour daily. I live a couple of blocks away and had been curious about their brunch. We were not disappointed. The mac&cheese (I know it is brunch, I'm ordering it!) was slapworthy. The flavor will knock you out. So good. As we unbuttoned our pants, we ordered their breakfast burrito (massive sized and ordered by many of the diners), brioche French toast and the crab cake benedict. Just a smidge of hollandaise sauce on the perfectly poached egg. We opted for the bottomless mimosas ($17.95) and left very happy. The service was great and we were frequently checked up on. This was unexpected. One of the best restaurants I've been do. Everything tasted fresh. Fried chicken wasn't oily. The pasta had different levels of flavor: tomato, pesto, cheese... they even cut the pasta into small bites so you could get a full bite without slurping. Event the mimosas were fresh. I don't know if they fresh squeezed the orange juice, but it could have fooled me if it wasn't. It didn't say on the menu but the mimosas were $9 each, or $22 for bottomless. Really great ambiance. I have only ever come straight from work since it's on my way home. But that means Happy Hour! Happy Hour is Tuesday - Sunday 3-6pm and 9pm-close. Also Monday 3-close. Great hours! They have a great selection of cocktails and food. The specials change DAILY and the owner is also head chef, so he really values seasonality, freshness and creativity. I really enjoy the wide selection of happy hour appetizers, also includes an amazing selection of cheese & charcuterie. Wednesday's is Wine night. No corkage fee! The veggies, the cornbread, and the potatoes had absolutely no flavor! I thought about asking for more gravy to add to my veggies and potatoes but even the gravy wasn't hitting The only thing that came hot was the chicken but it only tasted of butter. AND the second piece I started to eat was looking a little pink... I had had it at that point. I felt bad about complaining, but it turned out my whole group didn't enjoy their food either (they got burgers). Oh! It's a fairly small location with both indoor and outdoor seating. Food/Drinks I've tried their Roasted Baby Beet Salad which was truly delicious and refreshing and probably my favorite thing I've tried there thus far. I've also have had their Garlic Fries/Sweet Potato Fries, Braised Short-Ribs (a little dry) Crispy Tempura Calamari & Rock Shrimp, and Truffle Mushroom Burger, all of which I'd order again. I've had their Four Cheese Sexy Mac and was a little disappointed. It was surprisingly bland. Their drinks are bomb. Excellent happy hour selections. Usually happy hour food is confined to burgers and wings. Plate 38 had so many items that I could hardly decide what to get but settled on the Duck Confit Buffalo Chicken Wings, Achiote Glazed Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos, Oysters and Tuna Tacos. The tuna tacos were a hit at $5 each. If you're in the mood for dessert, the bread pudding is really good but not on the happy hour menu. read more
