As someone with Celiac disease, I try very hard to ask questions kindly and respectfully when dining out because cross contamination can make me seriously ill. Unfortunately, this was a really disappointing experience. The woman taking our order did not seem to know what Celiac disease or gluten even was, and became visibly annoyed when I asked basic questions about food preparation and cross contamination. When I asked about the prep station and whether gloves or utensils could be changed, she refused to ask the cooks. From what I was told, nearly everything shares the same grill. The only item that might potentially be safe would be eggs cooked in a separate pan, but without changing gloves or utensils, even that would not actually be safe for someone with Celiac disease. I ended up not eating at all. I actually left my party and waited in the car because I wanted to cry. It was embarrassing and honestly heartbreaking to feel like asking questions to protect my health was treated like an inconvenience. I completely understand not every restaurant can accommodate Celiac, but kindness, honesty, and basic understanding go a long way. This is an old, old-school diner in North Pasadena. It's nothing special, yet nothing terrible. Came after an early morning Krav Maga class, and while it hit the spot just fine, I doubt I'd rush back. This was just an average breakfast. Cheap, with friendly service, but nothing to write home about. The eggs over hard were decent. The blueberry pancakes were large but were just average. The bacon, despite being ordered crispy, was super greasy and limp. The best item was the side of hash browns. Still, it's just fine, and I'm sure for regulars in the area, it's a nice, safe place where everybody knows their name. Me, I'd go elsewhere in my search for excellent breakfast/brunch. I love the Reyn, and so do other people as evidenced by the very long line if you go after 8:30am on the weekends. We're lucky to live close by and come early in the morning when there aren't that many people inside. We choose our seat and get our order taken quickly by an always friendly service staff. I've had the French toast combo and that was delicious but my FAVORITE breakfast is the Spanish omelette. If you don't like thin/tomato-ey salsa, you should probably get this with salsa on the side or something because they DRENCH the omelette in salsa (which I enjoy because I like the saucy salsa). I love the crunch of the bell peppers and onions inside of the omelette and the cheese is soo gooey. The hash browns are perfectly crunchy and they give you an ample amount (but I'm a potato fiend and still always want more!) I've tried basically every bread that they have there and they're all delicious. They have a bakery that they get the bread from and you can tell - at first I thought they baked the bread in house because that's how good it was! The banana bread is worth the extra charge, but my favorite are the English muffins, they're nice and tangy. I'll be coming here are often as I can because I absolutely love The Reyn! read more

My go-to diner order has always been a Chicken Fried Steak unless they're known for something specific. The Chicken Fried Steak was nice and tender, but it was a bit of small portion. It came with a side of toast or Banana Bread. The only answer is to order the Banana Bread over an order of toast. The home fries with the onions were great! As previously mentioned, the banana bread was out of this world! You must try it! My wife ordered the Farmer's Breakfast which came with two eggs, hash browns, two strips of bacon, two sausage links and two pancakes. The pancakes were nice and fluffy and a good size. The staff did a great job with refilling waters and topping up the coffee. That was very attentive on their part! I probably wouldn't order the Chicken Fried Steak again, but I would for sure order the home fries with onions and that delicious Banana Bread. The wait was long, food was good. The air wasn't fresh though, needs more circulation. For the people complaining about waiting until their party arrived, it's not racism, it's how they conduct business. It was like that when we waited long. Not everything is racism. If your complete party is not there, then you're not going to be seated until they are. The service was good but felt rushed bc they get so busy and want a higher turnout rate. They should open the back area up and if they're able to keep up in the kitchen. However, I learned that a woman that was handicap and treated very poorly at closing time. She is expected to walk through the front because they cleaned the back floor, but she literally cannot walk. She was talked down to and made to feel so small while she just is unable to walk. For that experience that was shared, I will not be returning to this restaurant. People forget, elderly deserve a lot of respect and grace because they have more limitation that we are not yet aware of when we are young, but none of us are invincible. A small but impressive diner in southern Pasadena. They honestly have the best banana bread that I've ever had and would be a reason to visit alone, but honestly all the food is seriously delicious, the portion sizes are large, and the pricing is very fair. I would say that this diner leans more toward a Mexican diner in that they have a lot of Mexican dishes as well as clientele which being from San Diego myself I'm definitely not complaining about. Our server was extremely polite and all of our items arrived fairly quickly after ordering them. They have a large parking lot attached outback with free and easy parking however inside is very small so there's limited seating. They do have some tables outside, but you may have to wait a bit to sit inside depending on how crowded it is. As mentioned, we started off with the Banana Bread and honestly, it was incredible. My girlfriend does not like banana bread, but loved this one which shows how good it is. For my breakfast I ordered the Ortega Supreme and got a side of hashbrowns with chili cheese on top. The omelette was very good and filled with a lot of chilies which I loved, but I was not a very big fan of the chili. It tasted too cooked, almost as if it had been in the pot too long, giving it an almost burnt flavor. Aside from that though everything else was very good and we already are eager to visit again. Came with a friend for the first time earlier today. Considering it was a Tuesday at 10am, the place was busy. It's not a huge place but they also have a small area out back with limited seating. Some notable mentions... there is no lobby or waiting area in the front. They won't seat you unless the entire party is there. If you have to wait, it's best to wait outside. The server came to our table WAY too many times... at least 4 if not 5 times trying to take our order. Once we did order, food was delivered fast. I ordered the Belgium Waffle meal. It comes with 2 scrambled eggs, 1 waffle, two sausages, 2 bacon and choice of tater tots, hashbrowns. I was satisfied with portions and quality and freshness. While I was STILL eating, server delivered the receipt. And then again while was STILL eating, he asked if I wanted a to-go box. Talk about rushing us. Ughhh. I almost said something to him but I didn't. This is the reason for my 4 star rating. There was no line outside / people waiting to be seated so why rush us?? When it's time to pay, you take the receipt to the cashier/ register. I'd come back since I'm local and pricing is affordable. I'd hope the next visit I don't feel rushed. Judging by the clientele in the restaurant, it gives me the impression that there are a lot of returning local regulars. While that may be a good sign, that didn't help me out too much. Once I received my food, I was never checked on. I needed a new napkin, and I would have enjoyed a refill on my drink....both of which never occurred. A shame, too, because other customers seemed engaged in conversation. The food was....meh at best. My cheese omelet had slices of American cheese in it that were NOT melted. The potatoes only tasted of onion....no seasoning, no potato flavor...just onion. They were cold, too. The saving grace would be the singular pancake...the perfect texture and hot off the griddle.
