I typically support local venues but need to alert anyone that is expecting fine foods (as the menu's price point alludes to), to be prepared for a bit of a disappointment. Our food orders came out between 5-10 minutes from being placed. If you can make stuffed shells in 5-10 minutes you are a magician. We understand they are sometimes premade but this tasted precooked and warmed up. Wasn't even hot. The Short Rib was undercooked and difficult to cut. Yes cut, every other short rib I have had was fork tender and fell apart. On the other hand our appetizers were tasty. Service was good as expected however we ordered a bottle of wine we had seen on the online menu and the waitress was clueless as to what we were talking about. After much discussion I asked her to please go check and she came back with the wine. Not a very clean and clear transaction. Somewhat embarrassing. Most disappointed in that I made a reservation for our 35th anniversary. I even called and spoke to the manager and told him. I wanted this to be a special night for my lovely bride. I also told him again after we got the restaurant when the hostess asked if there were only two of us when the reservation I made was for two, for our anniversary. I did not expect anything for free but would have liked for my wife to have received some sort of acknowledgment and possibly a special desert. Nothing! Nothing at all. I would have paid anything for this to have been memorable for the right reasons. This turned out to be anything but a special night. I hope you have a better experience. My husband and I have eaten at the restaurant for several years and it is consistently excellent in service and food quality. It's our special occasion place and we love that the menu changes with the seasons. The new, larger space is excellent. Best cheesecake I have ever had. Not sure what is up with some of the negative reviews but you shouldn't be bringing in your own food, i.e. cake, and not expecting them to charge you for the use of their plates, utensils, etc. Same thing applies in California when you bring in your own wine to a restaurant. read more

Plate was just an awesome experience. Everything was just beautiful. From the very beginning, starting with the wonderful hostess who picked up on a loud table nearby and offered us a different one, to Charles, our waiter, who was just amazing at reading the table, offering a great mix of wit and sarcasm, along with four absolutely phenomenal recommendations from starters, mains, dessert, and wine. He knew the menu exceptionally well, and also provided some great details on the history behind the food. It was a pleasant surprise to have Dzintra come talk with us at our table (we were just regular guests, definitely nobody special). For several minutes, she talked to us about the menu, the restaurant, and her past. Austin has a lot of great restaurants. Make no mistake, this is one of them. There are also a lot of places where you can get decent food at the same prices we had tonight. Unlike those other places, which offer decent food despite being arguably overpriced, Plate by Dzintra is exceptional value for the money. It's not cheap, but it was truly a wonderful dining experience. The ahi poke starter, the pork chop, and Dzintra's cheesecake truly stole the show. I came to Plate by Dzintra on a recommendation for a friend's birthday dinner. The service was fabulous, attentive but not overly much. The food was excellent and presented beautifully. My friends all know that I dislike fish and have tried and tried to like sushi and just have never really cared for it. I am always game to try something new, so when the birthday girl wanted sushi and sashimi I was happy to oblige. The sashimi was super fresh, mostly delicious and plated beautifully. I only say mostly delicious because of my aversion to fish. I was very pleasantly surprised at how well I liked everything and my distaste for one of the varieties of fish is all my own picky-ness. The ancho-chipotle flourless chocolate cake was to-die-for. SO good. I would absolutely go back here whenever I can. read more

My husband and I ate here for the first time last night. Nice ambiance and friendly waitstaff. My husband had the butternut squash soup and I had the scallops with risotto. Both were extremely tasty but outrageously priced. I got three little scallops and a whole lot of risotto for $30! The soup was $10. And that's all we got. Nothing else came with our meals. No bread, no crackers, nothing. If you've got money to burn, this is the place to go. However, I work too hard for my money to get a little for the price. We won't return. read more

The Good: 1. Atmosphere! Walking in the restaurant was a treat, recently renovated and beautiful. The tables were so romantic and the chairs were EXTREMELY comfortable. 2. Specialty Drinks! The crafted cocktails were unexpected and a rare find (ingredients you've heard of before and in appetizing and unique combinations-they actually tasted good). 3. The crab cake appetizer tasted fresh and was very good. 4. The deserts were also delicious. We had the 5 kinds of chocolate one and the cheesecake. We cleaned the plates. Perfect! The Bad: 1. There wasn't many options for sparkling/bubbly. My husband hates wine and champagne, so we'd never get a bottle. I would have gladly paid more for a glass of nice champagne, rather than settling with $12/glass prosecco. 2. Unfortunately, our main course was disappointing. My husband ordered the short rib, and commented that it tasted like the pot roast I make at home. I thought the same thing when I had a bite. This may not be a big deal, but I'm not a great cook. My husband would never ever say that, but I know what I am and am not good at, and my cooking falls in the latter category. Sadly, my halibut was undercooked. Had it been opaque/white and flaky throughout it would have been a perfect fish, but unfortunately the center was translucent and the fish did not flake consistently (only cooked part). I ended up only eating the outer edges. It kind of grossed me out.....maybe this was why we ordered 2 desserts. Disclaimer: I will update this review after I give the restaurant a few months to get settled into the new location. This was a stellar dining experience. The food was excellent and clearly made with passion. The service was excellent as well. I had the fillet and it was amazing. Our server was excellent and had attention to detail which I am always a fan of. I look forward to coming back here again sometime. We did however come here to celebrate my fathers birthday and made that clear to the restaurant though that seemed to slip through the cracks a bit. Just disappointed by everything from cocktails to the food. The cocktails taste like if they use pasteurized juices(GROSS), best bet is to stick to the wine. Now to the food, the mashed potatoes on like three of there dishes were dry and bland if you are going to make something as simple as that you have to make it right and the taste of saltless, butterless potatoes is just infuriating. Service was decent, but could here them joking and saying obscene things, in there little service area which was very off putting. We won't be back, not fine dining at all. read more

We had the halibut for $40 and the black angus for $48. They were both VERY good but the serving size for the price was half what we expected. About 2 tablespoons of rice with the fish, the steak was very, very small. Again, VERY good food but the serving size was a major disappointment. For the same price I would go to Steiner ranch or Cafe Blue if it were a special $120 night dinner (we can take the leftovers home for the kids). BTW the cheesecake upped the review. Probably won't come again for the main course (again good food but the size was too tiny)--but I would come in for the cheesecake any time (it was actually a large serving). Also no nice breads or anything. Good try but missed the mark--fix the serving sizes and we'll keep you on the special occasion "go to" list! read more

Second time there in six weeks. Was recommended by a friend and very much enjoyed my meal My first time was seated foie gras that was cooked to perfection. Main course was duck confit with roasted fingerling potatoes. Nice wine selection that went with each course. Had a beautiful port to go with my chocolate dessert. Second visit went with a chestnut filled quail with foie gras ( yes, they had me at the foie) paired with a nice Cali Pinot noir. I hear they are moving to a new location and can't wait. read more

We've been to Dzintra's PLATE many times. Dinner is always a treat, and their occasional lunches offer the rare "civilized" midday dining experience in the Bee Cave/Lake Pointe/Lakeway area. I've seen several reviews on Yelp that are unfairly negative. All I can say is, if your meal is not up to your standards, speak up to the restaurant staff. I know that if something is not right, Dzintra or whoever is in the kitchen will make it right. Dzintra is a Cordon Bleu-trained chef. She's at her best with high-end cuisine. That means both high quality and price. Do not go to PLATE and expect a cheap, fast meal. This is not Mimi's. Also, Dzintra is in the kitchen many nights, or she's off buying food, or she's doing publicity spots. She is a chef. If you go to PLATE and expect Dzintra to come ask you how you are doing, you will be disappointed. There are other chefs who cook at PLATE, too. Chris is excellent, but I've never met him. That's because he is in the kitchen, where the chef is supposed to be. Dzintra's husband Allen had health issues this summer from July through August. During this time Dzintra may have been distracted. Some of the comments I've seen from diners during the time Allen was ill are unfair. Someone suggested that PLATE was set up for Dzintra by some "Sugar Daddy." That's ridiculous and untrue. This is a boutique, gourmet restaurant, a Mom and Pop shop. Things change a lot. Lunches come and go. Supper clubs and classes come and go. The menus change weekly, and yes, the kitchen might be out of something. The best way to know what's going on is to get on the e-mail list. That way you can keep up with the ever-changing menus and service times. Also, ASK YOUR SERVER before you order something. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. One of our favorite servers is Natalia. She basically TELLS US what to order, and we are rarely disappointed. I gave PLATE five stars because it's the best gourmet restaurant in this area. But it is not perfect. No restaurant is. All I can say is, give PLATE a try for a special dinner, upscale lunch or a cooking class, and if your meal is not up to standards, tell your server. I saw some Yelp post that said someone felt "invisible" at PLATE. Well, speak up. Say hello. Be friendly. Ask questions. Perhaps this diner felt invisible because she was. That's no cause to pout and write a negative review on Yelp. read more
