This store is SERIOUSLY going downhill. First of all, the new selling policies are completely ridiculous. They have limited it to only accepting sales on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with only 36 sellers allowed each day. Not only has this caused lines out the door for selling and longer wait times, but their racks are half empty due to the lack of clothes they are now getting! I used to be able to walk out of the store with a pile of clothes in my hand, now I can find maybe one or two items. We believe the employees need to be better trained to buy a wider variety of items, rather than just things they like, or that would fit them. Shockingly, the workers passed on many trendy items we attempted to sell, such as vintage Nike, Brandy Melville, Lululemon, Converse, Vans, Levi, Lei, and one very cute NWT unopened pink floral swimsuit from Bright Swimwear. And don't even get me started on the music these employees are playing, which is likely deferring customers and sellers as well. Don't get me wrong, they were very nice girls, but it's clear by the clothes they showcase on manikins and their Instagram that they are thinking more about themselves than the success of this business. read more

I came here to try to sell some of my clothes. I have designer jeans and brand new boots that I want to sell to get little money. Knowing most of the used places you won't get anything back. However, I was surprised they didn't take ANYTHING. not even a brand new boots because it wasn't in "SEASON" I literally just dropped them to good will. Lesson learn, unless you have brand new high end designer clothes, don't even bother trying to sell anything. I am in love with and appreciate the service Plato's Closet provides! What a hidden gem!! The store provides a great way to clean out your closet and receive a few dollars for your efforts....while at the same time turning your "gently used" clothes into money for something new to hang back in your closet. The staff is great! I had the pleasure of doing business with Katja on this day. She greeted me when my husband and I entered the store and she continued to converse with us making us feel like valued customers. She was very knowledgeable about the process of selling the clothes I brought in, and she was quick and efficient with her offer. I commented on the jewelry she was wearing at the time, and she mentioned that she had purchased most of the items at the store. This got me looking at what was for sale, and sure enough, I found several treasures that I ended up a purchasing. The store's prices were very reasonable which allowed me to purchase more items, but still went home with money in my pocket from the clothes I brought in to sell. While I was waiting for them to sort through my things, I walked around and they had a lot of silly brands for sale. Perhaps that's their demographic? Think Victoria's Secret Pink, Lululemon, Abercrombie, and the other teenie bopper brands you can think of. You're better off selling on Poshmark or donating so you can get a tax write off. Just don't wait your time going here. I've tried to sell with them the entire summer and they have just changed their rules every single time I try and come. Such an extreme waste of time and gas and effort. Changed their rules 847 times. Everytime I called there was a new rule. we're only accepting 36 sellers. We're only allowing sellers Tuesdays and Saturdays now but there is not limit on people. I go today on Tuesday for the 4th time, "our seller table is closed." I ask why? Because they reached the 36 seller limit when a week ago that wasn't even a rule. So over this place, genuinely the most frustrating thing, as I've been trying to sell these clothes the entire summer. What a goofy place. I took in two large bags of great quality shoes and 4 bags of brand name clothing. I was told to come back in an hour. The lady did not take one item, not one!! I have sold on eBay for years so I have a good idea what sells. I think Plato mostly focuses on items like daisy duke shorts and Abercrombie tank tops. I brought in two garbage bag-size filled, heavy bags with gently used various brands & designer items. Some items even had price tags. out of the over 40 pieces they only offered to buy back ONE pair of Levi's jeans for 3 dollars. I called ahead to make sure they were buying clothes for the day before I took a 20 min drive out to Pleasanton. I took the trip on a Monday around 11am. I brought in a few Ikea bags of clothes. Mostly tees and some streetwear brands. The buyer told me it would take 30-40 minutes to go through my clothes. She ended up buying an assortment of items at a reasonable price. I was very pleased with the service. I was in and out in about 30 minutes! If you are planning to sell to them, give them a call to see what stuff they are interested in because depending on season and local trends it really varies from one store to another. read more

The employees who work here are friendly and helpful. They are trained to ask if you have any questions about your buy once an offer is presented. The person handing you your buy may not be trained to answer correctly yet, so they may refer you to the buyer who looked through your actual clothes. If asked, they could give you detailed explanations of exactly why an item was passed on. There is always a reason! It's nothing personal and the computer system does all the pricing. The buyer, on their end, just sorts the clothes from what's worth it and what is not. Just because something is new with tags does not mean that it will be bought; sometimes there may be an odor to it or it could be something that has been sitting in your closet for years. Items are passed on even if they have slight damage because if they try to sell that item in the store, they will have to discount it anyway for any customer who complains about it. Everyone has to remember this is a second-hand store; not everything will be new and perfect. Sometimes items are even damaged in the process of customers trying them on (makeup getting on the collars of items, etc) However, I myself have gotten some practically new pieces. These employees have dealt with the worst kinds of people from what I've seen, yet they keep their composure. They have gotten personal, rude insults & are expected to take it, because that's just what customer service is, right? A buy can only be left for 24 hours before it is donated! If you don't have the time to pick it up within the conditions you have signed for prior and expect the employees to keep track of your bags amongst the many others, then sorry! Mixups are bound to happen considering the limited space they have to actual store the bags of clothing. The employees are college or high school students, and don't "have an IQ of a peanut." (Please refer to the review I am attaching to see a prime example of the kinds of people these employees have to deal with. You are an adult, remember that!) The store does not smell like ass cancer. They have air fresheners almost everywhere and things are disinfected and cleaned every night. The bottom line is Yelp, in general, is used to express opinions despite how demeaning and untrue they are. Unlike the other reviews I personally had a great time selling clothing here. I recieved $79 for a good chunk of items I was selling. Just as a tip, i don't think it matters what brand you're selling, as long as the clothing is inseason, and it currently is trending. I would also reccomend looking at their instagram page to know what they are looking for in stock. I'd also reccomend calling in before coming because they can have a good estimate of how long it would take for them to sort through. Overall i had a good experience selling here, the girls working were very friendly and helpful, and i'd go here to sell again. I have taken my clothes here multiple times to sell them. I only had one decent experience. They most recent times i have gone, they've wasted my time. I usually take in 1-2 bins full of clothes. My first time here they told me i couldn't bring the clothes in garbage bags, so i had to go through so much just to go buy some bins. I think the store associate lied to me about the garbage bags because today, i seen 2 people bring in garbage bags and were accepted. Back to my story, the 2 most recent times I've gotten back $2 and $5. Again, wasting my time. I don't live in this city so driving back and forth isn't cool just for a couple dollars. I'm torn on what to really say about Plato's Closet. It looks really cute from the outside and the employees are really friendly, but what's on the racks isn't super impressive compared to other curated secondhand stores. I felt it was just a bunch of F21, H&M, and Brandy Melville which was expected based on their website, but a lot of it wasn't in good condition. I felt it was overpriced for these fast fashion brands, but then when you'd spot a mid-tier/designer brand it was certainly underpriced. My advice would be don't sell here if you're very attached to your clothing or if you have high-end (as in pricier items that are still trending or in high demand) styles. I definitely came here with stuff I was just willing to let go of no matter what thankfully. My surprise is that they did not take the Free People, Jeffrey Campbell, and Zara items that were in good condition and still current. It was sorta weird what they chose and what they didn't. I almost felt if I had another buyer looking through, these items wouldn't have been passed on. The racks were not filled either, so not sure if having too much inventory was the reason. read more

Went to Plato's Closet to sell my clothing & handbags. I was told it was going to take 3 hours before they could access my things & give me a price quote. I wasn't going to wait 3 hours so the employee & I agreed I could leave my stuff there & I would come back the next day for the cash. Came back the next day & was told they didn't want any of my stuff which was a surprise to me considering almost all of my items were brands they reccomend to bring in on their website. I was NOT told they might not accept any of my stuff. Staff is VERY disrespectful of client's time. I spent both time & gas money as Plato's Closet is a 45 minute drive from my house. I explained this to the store manager whose reply was "The employee should have told you we may not accept any of your items." Oops! Too bad. "Nothing we can do." First off, the staff has changed. They are genuinely sweet and friendly. Second, their prices are what used price pieces should be along with vintage items. Thank you for pricing them at affordable prices for brand name pieces. Some other Platos location OVERLY price their items which means I can go elsewhere and probably buy something new for the price I'm paying. So thank you to the store owner for helping (if so) regulate cheap prices for customers to enjoy coming to this location. I visit once a month or so and each time I've gone, items are well organized and the employees are in general friendly. They have fitting rooms to try on clothes. Selection is generally going to be catered for teenagers and young adults so I tend to buy denim, activewear, etc. that are a bit more age neutral instead. Prices are in general fair, have snagged a few REALLY great deals but definitely have seen some pieces that you could easily find in a true thrift store for less, but if you like the types of styles they have then the convenience is nice. Have only tried selling a couple times and the experience is on par with any other type of used clothes reseller like this (though they like trendier clothing). Your mileage will vary with whoever's buying, in general expect to receive nickels on the dollar and for not everything to be taken. You can't expect to get back anything near what you paid for retail; if you think your clothes are that valuable then try to sell it individually yourself. I don't really get people who drive 25 miles out thinking they're going to get back a lot of money. read more

Came here as a seller but also looked around while we waited. They have good selection of clothes for girls and some for guys. They only seem to take items that are currently in-style, so items you would see at the mall right now. They do seem to sell some items at unreasonable prices(saw a new F21 shirt that had a tag for 9.90 & they were selling it for $9, not much difference if I went to the store and bought a brand new one). But overall they have really cute clothes since they only buy name brand/trendy.
