Took 3 grocery bags of misc. good quality clothes. First they tell me it will take 45mins. And they will TEXT ME when it is done. I waited over an hour thinking how much longer are they going to take? I call in and ask if they are finished, here is the employees response "Yes, it is done." I asked "Why didn't I get a text saying it was done?" She replied "Oh our text messaging system is down right now." She didn't apologize and did not show a concern for wasting my time. If I didn't call in, I would've waited longer.. As an employee and a decent person, you can give your customers a call when finished looking through a customers bag. I did have some nice clothes to sell, and I received only $24 haha. I took it the $24 because Crossroads in Berkeley did not take them. However, I strongly suggest going to Crossroads first before trying to sell your clothes at Plato's closet. They are more friendly, attentive to your time, and also payout is alot better read more

Once again, this place never fails to completely suck. They advertise that they buy every day all day as long as they're open, yet I drove over an hour to sell some stuff on a SATURDAY just to have them turn me around and tell me "we're not buying till Wednesday". I usually enjoy going to this store but I went recently and the women working was so rude. She had an immediate attitude and sounded like she hated her job. I tried to brush it off and go on with my day because I was just stopping by to sell some clothes. When I came back she was unorganized and still so rude. Ok so this place is in a nice place in pleasanton & the staff is friendly, but I have to give this place 2 stars for several reasons :( now mind you i come here because there are certain times i buy items to wear a few times and donate them after * Quality of clothing sold isnt the best... I went to sell some items last week and when I picked up the remaining items that they did not want, I noticed a new dress with the $100 price tag was no longer in my bag. I asked to girls at the counter and three of them were adamant they never saw the dress. I took pictures and counted all the items so I showed them the exact dress but they again said I must have not brought it. After insisting that I did and asking what they are going to do to resolve the item going missing they said they would speak to the owner to see what to do. Not even ten minutes after I left I recieved a call saying they somehow found the dress.... very sketchy. BEWARE and count your items read more

I've been to a number of thrift and consignment shops in the Bay Area (and elsewhere) - Lauren's Closet in Alameda, Crossroads in Berkeley and Oakland, Buffalo Exchange in Berkeley, Red Umbrella in Petaluma - and I'll say that in terms of size of selection, Plato's Closet is second only to Crossroads in Berkeley. It's not always easy finding the sizes I need (I'm pretty petite), so it was really nice coming here and finding a TON of clothing in my size. What's great about this place, and what I wish the other shops I've been to would do, is to separate the clothing not just by section, but by size within each section. I wouldn't have to spend as much time looking through literally every article of clothing if they would adopt the smart organizational system of Plato's Closet. I found some great items here the one and only time I dropped by with a friend, like some totally rad Ever skinnies and a few cute sweaters and shirts. The service here, unfortunately, is hit or miss. The girl at the fitting room was very friendly and accommodating, while the tall brunette with heavy eye makeup and interesting eyebrows was a snob. The prices here are also more appealing than the other shops I've been to, and seem to get that they're selling used, and not new, clothing. I guess I was really just hoping to walk away with more than I did. Granted, I did say that there was quite a lot of clothing in my size - that didn't mean everything was great. I get it, this store caters to the teenie bopper crowd, but it also aims to bring in the 20-somethings like myself, and unfortunately I found myself passing over the majority of what was here because it was just a lot of F21 and Aeropostale kinda stuff. Also extremely odd is the hiring process here; a friend of mine applied and seriously had to take a spelling and math test as a prerequisite for being considered. The math I can maybe understand (I'll be the first to admit that nearly five years in retail has enlightened me to the fact that retail math is the most helpful math I've ever used), but spelling? Really? I don't want to work with a moron any more than the next guy, but something about that just seemed like Plato's Closet is reaching for some straw of elitism that in all honesty they shouldn't be reaching for. I've shopped here before a few times before. Their men's selection is pretty scarce. Hit and miss mostly. Be sure to check everything very closely. I've seen items for sale with sweat/deodorant stains in the armpit area *gross*. Came in yesterday to sell some name brand shirts (Calvin Klein, TopMan, BOY London, Diesel, H&M, amongst others). I was told they were no longer accepting any items that day. It was 2pm and I was literally the only person in the store. I never left a review for any store, that should say something about their shitty service. I drove there about two times to bring in my clothes that I wanted to sell. The first time I came, one guy was like we don't take clothes the last hour ( I got there around 5). I was disappointed cuz they didn't have any information on their website. The second time around I came at 4, when I got there another staff member was like we're closing soon cuz of temporary hours, but I was like last week u guys were open till 6, like how could u guys not update your website? I even explained to her that I've been here and sent away last time, but the staff just doesn't seem to care. Horrible experience. I brought in a bag of clothes and some shoes to sell. When I came back to collect, they told me they could not locate my clothes or shoes. I had to come in another time to talk to manager and despite her reviewing footage of me Clearly dropping off the clothes.. she said she cannot do anything about the fact they lost my items and that they are completely unaccounted for. I asked her how will she make up for this mishap, she answered; "there is nothing i can do!" "It's one of those unfortunate events" This is completely irresponsible and I feel like it is illegal for them to mysteriously.. lose my clothes! Wow DONT GO TO THIS LOCATION!!! I brought in a huge bag of all name brand very slightly used items today. Including a pair of ugg boots I had worn maybe 5 times a bunch of American Eagle jeans sweatshirts Nike adidas a whole bunch of different stuff. When I got the text they had gone through my huge bag I was excited, walked in they passed on the whole bag! Said my clothes were out of season. Mind you all of these girls were a size 0 I'm a size 14! The girl at the counter was cold and basically was like take ur shit and go. Fat shaming is a thing. Very odd location for a "thrift" store. What I don't understand is how they can charge MORE for some of the items on the shelves. I saw an H&M t-shirt going for twice as what it would sell for in the store. I bet this place is great for selling your clothes, but for buying...forgetaboutit. I'm so glad they moved to the new location near Carl's Junior. The new place is so much more organized and you can actually find decent things. It's almost like since they've moved they've up'd there style selection, which i have no problem with :) I've sold stuff here in the past, the only problem is that they are toooo selective with that they buy back, so with whatever they dont buy from me, i just take to recycled stores in Berkeley, they usually end up buying most of my things anyway. Quick Tip: If you do stop by here to shop, rummage through the sale area! it's totally worth it. I found 2 pairs of cute shoes, 1 pair, steve madden not even worn yet (you can tell) the other slightly used, nothing cleaner can fix. plato's is by far the worst place to take clothes if you're looking to get rid of them. my first few times selling clothes at this location were fairly easy with no hassle. my most recent time selling though, i was told that the wait would be 3-4 hours, and i would receive a text when my bag had been processed. after waiting for 7 hours with no text, i called to ask about the status of my items, and the employee on the phone said that my bag had been ready for a while, with no other explanation. upon picking up my bag i was offered less than 5 dollars for one item of clothing. if you're looking to sell clothes and actually receive money for your items, try poshmark or depop. read more

Seriously..I'm so disappointed in Plato's. I've shopped here a few times, and each time was only slightly impressed by the condition of the selections. However, this time I actually decided to sell a bag of clothes to them... When checking in, I gave my information and the girl who was helping me assured I'd get a text when my clothes were finished being sorted. I waited and never did I receive a text or call from that Thursday. Come today (Tuesday) I called in to check if they were finished sorting and the girl told me that because I didn't pick it up in 48 hours they donated it all! ALL OF THE CLOTHES! Prior to this I hadn't even been told of this rule. They dubbed it an "All Pass" which basically meant they didn't want to use any of it (which is what it is), however the girl on the phone couldn't even tell me why it was considered so. Very helpful. So not only was there miscommunication on their part and uncertainty of reason why the clothes were passed on, but they donated it ALL without telling me. Disappointed is a nice way of describing how I'm feeling right now. Never shopping much less selling anything here ever again. read more

I really wish I took down the girls name from a few days ago to make my review complete. Came again in the afternoon, whole different staff, whole different attitude of their own. The staff today was not all blondes like last time. The girls all had brown shorter hair/long boobs style. They seemed to care a little more about working there which is why I give 4 instead of 3 stars. It is also based on the girl who chooses your items and whether they fit the current aesthetic or not. They didn't like my items last time but bought the same ones I tried to sell last time this time. So really it's if the girl who is doing your basket likes your stuff or not. At this time they are not taking tank tops or regular jeans. They want distressed jeans and darker color clothing. No neon or bright colors unless floral. They do state they pay 10% of the items worth in their system and will donate your clothes after 24 hours of not picking them up. Which I never leave for more than 1-2 hours, not sure why you would leave clothes overnight. One thing to keep in mind is how long you are giving them. 1 hour before closing may not be enough time to go through 50 items, choose what they want and then price it out for you. If you decide to leave your stuff overnight and they donate it, I think thats your problem not theirs, they don't have a secret storage facility. Also if you have super high end items then consign them elsewhere. You paid $300 and then can only pay $30 not their problem the employees don't own the company and will gladly give you corporations number knowing they can change their story to benefit them. I am reluctant to give 4 stars because I think the service and the way the store looks has been declining since they changed managers and a lot of employees have quit. But I don't want them to go out of business based on Yelp reviews, because if they don't buy your items you can use other apps and consignment store s to make your money. read more

I had a bad experience here in the past but since my little cousin loves to shop here I drove her here a few times over the last year. I have to say their selection and employees have improved a whole lot. I feel welcomed when I shop here now, the employees greet you and offer to help you while you're shopping. I found some really good brand name finds and this was the perfect place to buy transitional clothes to wear until my pre-baby clothes fit again. It was my first... and last time coming here and I had heard it was a good place to exchange clothes or items for cash. I brought in a pair of Uggs and Raybans expecting to get a good amount of cash back considering they're big brands. When I got there I was told it was a 3 hour wait, which I wasn't too upset about because I was getting money back. But I came back the next day for them to tell me that they couldn't take either of my items because "similar items weren't selling well" or "they already have too much of the same item." They were very unsympathetic about this. And I was very frustrated to say the least. I was never told that there was a chance they wouldn't take my items. This place has plenty of parking. This store is very clean. They are open almost all day. They have a lot of items here for women and men. You can sell your items here but you won't get much. At least it's better then the items sitting in your closet. This is one of the main reasons why I gave it a 4 star. Also they don't have bathrooms. Beyond disappointing experience! My fiancé and I decided it was time to sift through our closets and part ways with some of our clothes. We brought in 2 bags filled with gently-used name-brand shoes, jeans, shirts, & jackets. Note: to sell your clothes, they must be in bags, and they must fit in this little laundry basket that they have on top of their counter. Out of all the items we brought, they only bought 2 pairs of Levi's jeans, a Vans shirt, and a Brandy Melville jacket...and gave us $10 for all of it! We were beyond surprised that they passed on my fiancé's Supreme shirts, which were in good condition. You would think (or at least hope) that the "buyers" for this store would have some basic knowledge about clothing brands, quality, value, and trends..but based on the selection in that was already in their store, it's clear that they do not. After walking around the store, I found some dirty Nike Free Runs, worn-out/faded shirts from brands no one else has never heard of, and even a clearly used and dated children's lunch box (which they were selling for $5...). So you're telling me that this lunch box would sell easier than a Supreme shirt? Ok.. I agree with other Yelpers- you're better off selling your clothes on apps like Poshmark or Vinted, or just donate. We left with $10 and so much confusion..lol. I do want to highlight the positives first: 1. If you're looking for jeans or jean shorts, they have lots! 2. If you are the parent of a middle schooler who exclusively wants to wear brand name t-shirts and hoodies like I did when I was 13, they have those (although personally for the prices here I'd just go to Ross for billabong style t-shirts) 3.all the staff were very friendly Okay, so why one star? I was primarily trying to sell, but was planning to browse while I was there. I live about 20 miles from this location so I called ahead to make sure they were buying, and they said they were. I arrived and they processed my drop off and said it would be 3-4 hours! Okay, longer than I hoped, but I get it. They were flexible with me returning today or tomorrow, which was nice since now I'd have to hang out in Pleasanton for 4 hours or come back. I decided to make the drive twice. When I went back to pick up, they said they would not be buying any of my items because their inventory is too high. I had brought 40-50 items all aligning with what their website said they were currently buying. Many of my items were only worn once or twice and some were new with tags on. A few were basics (white tee, striped tee, etc) and many were trendy pieces that I originally bought to wear to concerts: flannels, crochet/embroidered tops, casual dresses, stuff like that. They didn't want any of it, and they ripped my reusable bag besides. I'm guessing they literally just look at the inside tag while items are still folded and if the tag isn't a teen shopping mall brand they keep going, no matter how trendy the actual item's style is. Disclaimer: a lot of what I brought was not a "name brand"--one flannel was Topshop and a few dresses were forever 21 but my other stuff was from random department stores, target, Marshall's, Amazon... even if it was brand new or worn once. So here's the kicker though--there was almost nothing on the floor to buy. If their inventory is too high, where's all the stuff? It took me all of 10 minutes to browse the entire store. They had maybe 20 t-shirts available in a women's medium and maybe 30 dresses. That's it. I found two items I would have considered buying but one had a stain and the other had a hole. Also what they call trendy is hard to pinpoint-- I'm in my 20's and I'm a middle school teacher. I can't imagine myself or my teenagers wearing a lot of what's there... who are they aiming for? TL;DR -- if you live in Pleasanton it's worth a shot. Otherwise it's a huge disappointment all around, fo buying and selling. Save yourself half a tank of gas and just go on ThredUP. As I walked in the door I was greeted by one of the employees, Kelsey who offered to take both of my heavy boxes and brought them straight to the counter. I had never sold to Plato's before and she explained the whole buying process to me. She was very warm, welcoming, and eager to help answer any questions I had. Since the buyers were looking at other people's clothes she told me the wait time. She explained that you did not have to wait around and could come back if you'd like or could look around the store. I opted to browse around since I had never been before. The racks were organized quite nicely by size, style and color. Some brands I recognized were Forever 21, Target, Charlotte Russe, American Eagle, Express as well as others. Their target consumer is high school through college age. Jeans seemed to average around $15-$20. Shirts were anywhere from $5-$10. I ended up purchasing two shirts that looked in good condition. I then noticed the buyer going through my clothes and decided to go watch. I forget her name, but she had blonde curly hair and she was also extremely friendly and helpful. She told me if I had any questions about why she wasn't choosing certain clothes she could explain to me. Most of the reasons were things were not in style for what they were directed to purchase. She ended up taking a few pairs of AE jeans, a black blazer, a pair of overalls, a forever 21 dress, and a few billabong shorts. Her buying price for my items was $43 and change. Overall I am very impressed with my first experience here. The staff was great and made all their customers seem important even with the place packed. I am excited to have made some money and get some nice shirts in the process. Would definitely recommend checking it out after cleaning out your own closet or if you want to make some great deals purchasing clothes. read more

The only reason why I would give this store 2 stars is because the workers were friendly. Other than that, don't bother wasting your time trying to sell your clothes. I brought many, many brand name/expensive clothes than they did not take at all (even though they claimed that they would on their website), and even the ones that they did take, they very much under-evaluated. If you're planning to sell your clothes, make sure that they are brand-named AND in-season with the trends for the CURRENT year. read more

PARTING WAYS WITH THIS STORE!! My experience this past Saturday was unacceptable. I have never felt so un welcomed and uncomfortable at this store. I have been a loyal customer of this store well over 10 years and today was my last straw. The Young boy at the front counter with brown hair is extremely rude and does not know how to treat his customers. I came in to sell my clothes and the original girl checked me in, advised me it would be a 2.5hr wait along with advise me of their NEW 2 bag policy?? Seriously !! Aren't you in business to make money and take ( Buy) as many quality items as possible?? She then told me that I could consolidate my items and bring them in. I ran to my car grabbed all my bags (4) regular size bags and brought them in. When I got to the counter this young kid with an attitude barked at me and rolled his eyes. He continued to tell me that they had a 2 bag minimum. I told him i literally just saw someone come in behind me with 3 bags and you accepted their items? Then I look behind the counter and they have a bunch of large jumbo black bags .. I tell him that my stuff is less then those large black bags and he continues to tell me "SORRY" with a like if i care attitude. Really now your gonna discriminate against me!! This is pathetic... I have sold and provided tons of name brand items over the years. I don't know whats happening with the workers as they all seem to have an attitude and don't seem to care about their customers. My experience was horrible First of all I brought in brand name clothes like American eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, forever 21, and H&M and they gave me $16. When I walked in they told me there was a 2 hour wait and I was like okay because I thought I was going to get like maybe $70 because if you shop at American eagle one pair of jeans are $50 but two of mine are worn and one is basically new because I've worn them once. But they gave a $2.60 per pair of jeans. Then my shirts were worn and I got that but like they are at least worth $5 or something but they gave me like $1 per shirt. read more
