We were on our way to see a Broadway show and wanted a fun place to grab a quick bite. We were so happy to stop in to the Playwright Celtic Pub. There were several floors for seating. We opted for the top floor where we had a view of the city below and had outdoor seating. (Keep in mind you have to climb stairs if you opt for the top floors-worth it though) There were restrooms on each level and full bars. My daughter ordered an espresso martini and I had a mixed drink. The specials were fun and had the right amount of alcohol. The average price for our meals was $20. Hubby got the turkey club which was very full of meats and veggies. My crab sliders were excellent. Chunks of crab and very flesh and delicious. My daughter opted for the grilled chicken with mozzarella and yummy fries. Even though there were not a lot of people on our level, we had attentive service without being intrusive. Three floors of bar/restaurant space plus a roof top bar. Went to the roof. Roof area was sheded in due to surrounding construction. Service and drinks were on point. No complaints. read more

I have seen a lot of reviews say that is a tourist bar and maybe it is because found this bar my first night in NYC. There was definitely locals hanging out too based on how people knew each other. I was by myself and it was busy but as soon as the bartender saw me he found me a seat and made me feel very comfortable. Bartender was very impatient and kept coming to see what we wanted (wasn't even there long and just sat down.) wasn't very friendly, even the couple that sat down next to us agreed. Disorganized staff. I came in here to escape the rain when I was suddenly caught in a downpour, cold, hard cash in my pocket ready to be spent on a meal. They gave me a table and a menu and I was ready to order, but after five minutes of waiting for a server, I was suddenly informed that the place was being rented out to a private party and I had to leave. They couldn't even give me a table in another spot. Yes, they were willing to throw out a paying customer all because of a mistake on their end. If the whole place was rented out ahead of time, they should have told me upfront to begin with. read more

Solid pub food with surprising homemade quality. I had the fixed price special and the made beef and vegetable soup was great. The main was a nicely friend not fatty pork schnitzel with a great mushroom gravy. I enjoyed the roasted tatties! Overall good meal and price was fantastic. read more

Searched "cheap bar nearby" and stumbled upon this place. Cheap could not be less accurate. The bar itself is interesting: there are multiple floors of bars. We were directed toward the third floor bar (i.e. skip floor 2). It was overall rather empty and the space kept going up and up. The cocktail menu was $13 each, fine. Neither of our cocktails (mule or espresso martini) were very good-fine. What bothers me more was that we ordered supplemental whiskey to go with the drink that was $13 per shot, which seems unjust and exorbitant for a well drink. I was hoping for a place that didn't take advantage of its location to Broadway and it seems I was unsuccessful. read more

This place was only a few blocks away from where we were going, so it made sense to check it out. I liked how they had multiple levels of seating. We sat on the second level, and started off with some drinks. We tried the sangria special, and an IPA beer. The drinks were good. Standard NYC prices. I then ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap with French Fries. This was a delicious meal. The chicken was a great spice level, and tasted great. The fries were seasoned well too. This is a really solid pub choice in the Times Square area. We came after seeing a show and there was plenty of seating. Service was quick and friendly. The drink selection was excellent, sex on the Hudson with blue curaçao tasted particularly great after seeing The Shark Is Broken. The fish and chips were tasty and loved hat malt vinegar was available for use on the chips. Visited the restaurant our first night in Midtown. This was my second time here and the food, service, and atmosphere were wonderful. We sat in the rooftop restaurant and enjoyed the beautiful view, especially at night. The stairs are very high an not for everyone, but worth it if you can make it. I had the chicken tacos and they were excellent, with chunks of seasoned chicken and avocado. We spent the day in NYC. We stopped in front of Playwright to check out their menu. We were approached and told to go inside for a seat. We went up 2 flights of stairs to a crowded, extremely warm restaurant. The hostess asked if were were there to drink or to dine. This threw me off. Why wouldn't we be here to dine? We didn't go to the bar area. Anyway, she told us to wait 2 minutes in the bar for a table. I went into the restroom and my husband was seated. I came out to find him seated next to another couple, pushed up against the wall. I had to ask the women at the adjoining table to let me in to my seat. It was hot and our table was crowded, and we considered leaving. The waiter had to push behind the gentleman sitting next to us to take our order. We ordered all at once. The waiter brought water...warm water. We had to ask for a glass of ice. While waiting for our food, we were close enough to hear the conversation next to us and see their food. The restaurant was decorated for the holidays. The World Cup was playing on the TVs and the crowd was cheering. Its was a lively atmosphere, except for being stuffed in a corner and sweating. By the time our food was served the couple next to us had left. Since our appetizer and dinner came at the same time, the waiter pushed the tables together to fit the dishes and we could move over and breath. It was a bit cooler away from the wall. My husband got a drink, a bahama mama. Very yummy! We got the Irish Nacho Fries which were pretty tasty, too! I got a crispy chicken cesar salad. The chicken was good, fresh and crispy. The dressing was good, but there was too much of it. My husband got a burger which he said was OK. Definitely not a fresh burger and over cooked. Our server was helpful and friendly but very busy and overwhelmed. Luckily we didn't need much attention. Popped in here before a show on Saturday evening. When we walked in the place was fairly empty - on all floors. By the time we left it was completely packed on every floor and people waiting to get in. The two guys that were running the third floor rooftop and bar area were on point. They hustled around making sure people were getting what they needed. It was a lot for 2 guys to handle but they did a great job considering. We had 2 salads. Both really excellent. Very impressive for your standard Irish pub type place. The building had nice old architecture and definitely took me back in time. Great find!
