I have to say, the food was pretty good. Came here with a friend after graduation, and although I wasn't impressed, the food wasn't all that bad. I wish I could give it zero. I was not satisfied with the consistency or taste of the guacamole at the Short Pump location. I voiced this to the bartender who told me that's the way it is sometimes. Since he was dismissive about my concerns, I did not leave a tip. Something didn't sit well with me and I should have taken a picture of my signed copy because the waiter/bartender took it upon himself to add a $5 tip to my amount due. That is STEALING!!!! I would not recommend any location that would blatantly steal regardless of the amount. While I love the locations on Brook Road and 6623 West Broad, I would not recommend this location. read more

This Review is the plain unfiltered truth! If u don't want to read it then don't read this and turn on the view and listen to Barbara WAWA for 20 minutes. The last 3 times I've been here the service has been apathetic at best. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to plaza Azteca but we went. The service is as bad as the Mexico restaurant. I had to go to the servers station TWICE to get my own coke refills. The other waiters just stared at me and offered no assistance! Before u start thinking I'm critical; I was a dishwasher and Busboy for 7 years in high school and college. I'm prone to give the benefit of the doubt out and look for a way out! Fom the time we were served dinner the server never came by until he brought us the check!!! Seriously!!!! The server had 3 tables outside on the deck an our table inside! Absolutely not a good set up! U r set from the start to get the short end if the stick. I spoke with the manager and he had the responsiveness of a deer in the head lights! The kicker is that we dinned there at 4:00 and the place was 1/3 full! It ain't cheap so I would expect at best average service...... Ain't happening! I look forward to the manager responding as this is a normal customer experience at Plaza AZTECA ! The place use to be packed but now it's 1/2 full at best on a weekend night! Eventually people go to were the service is respectable! Oh by the way the waiters Cell Phone rang while he was taking our order and he just left to answer it!!!.... I've come to accept the fact that there really are only varying degrees of mediocrity in terms of "Mexican" food in Richmond, but please enlighten me if I'm missing something. First of all, nearly without exception, the Mexican restaurants including this one have a menu with little variation. I have found that several have menus that are virtually identical. So within the sphere of this type of food, which we call Mexican but is actually America's expectations of Mexican, it's fairly easy to compare between the restaurants - the comparison being, who prepares this style of food the best. Unfortunately, it is not Plaza Azteca. The physical structure/facility itself is nice. It is new and probably among the most appealing looks-wise. The staff is fine; no complaints there. The food, however, is rather bland. Upon arrival you are brought the obligatory chips and salsa. The chips are standard but the salsa is unremarkable. The food - and we've sampled many dishes with my family of 6 on several visits - is very basic. No distinguishable flavors pop out at you. I feel like the dishes are comprised of the same flavors and ingredients put together in different shapes, sizes, and presentations. In sum, for those who simply want chips, salsa, a cold beer and something randomly "Mexican", it's fine. At worst, the restaurant is cookie cutter. For this style of restaurant, however, there are others in the area that make the same dishes more flavorfully, including the chips and salsa, which are sort of de rigueur in my book. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I ordered food to feed 75 people at a taco bar event I was having for work and the food arrived in small, to go containers! WHO FEEDS 75 PEOPLE IN INDIVIDUAL CONTAINERS?!?!? I called the store and asked to speak to the manager who was incredibly rude. He explained he told my employee that this was how he would box it all u. I advised him that I've ordered from this exact location before and the food was prepared in large catering trays, not 100 to go containers. I just spent over $600 at his store and he was incredibly rude to me. At one point screaming at me and cursing before hanging up the phone with "if you want your f***ing money back then fine!" at which point he hung up on me. If you want good Mexican food, go to Mexico and forget Plaza Azteca!!!! read more

I don't know why there are so many bad reviews. I have been to this location maybe a dozen times now and the food and service are usually good. There have been a few times it took too long to get my check but overall this is a good place to eat. I usually get the fajitas since you can never go wrong with them. The margaritas are usually good altho once in a while I have gotten one that tasted like there was no tequila in it. The free chips and salsa are good not amazing tho. They will bring you as many refills as you like so it's hard to complain. I will say that I did not appreciate getting charged 99 cents for a tiny side of grated cheese today. That was the first time I have ever been charged for it. Overall I like this place and it's the only Mexican place i go back to on a fairly regular basis. I would rate the food between 3.5 and 4 stars and the service 4 stars. read more

This restaurant serves typical mexican fare and it's good. But the waitstaff is incredibly slow. The kitchen staff is obviously efficient but you'll wait all night to put in your order. My husband and I usually come here for a quick meal and tonight we've been sitting here for 20 minutes (on a kinda slow night) waiting for our check and have not seen our waitress much less any other waitress. A couple seated near us had to go get their waitress to have their order taken. This has happened the past couple times we were here. Great food, poor service. Will rethink our next visit as this obviously isn't a good stop for a quick meal any longer. read more

Have been here numerous times since they opened. Today was the last time. Service was fine. The food was the worst it has ever been. I got a chicken quesadilla with added spinach. Water and grease poured out of it and when I saw the chicken, it looked like canned chicken and a very small amount of it, was used. Just terrible. First off, I'm originally from Southern California, so I am a bit spoiled when it comes to Mexican food. I grew up on it. The good: Service - the server was very attentive and did a great job. Guacamole - very fresh and mild in flavor. You could actually taste the avocado and the light spices and flavors were a welcome change compared to other places I've eaten in RVA. The Bad: Food - It was ok. It wasn't great. I had the enchiladas and they were rather bland. Not spicy, just flavorless. My daughter had the chicken spinach enchilada and the spinach tasted like it had come out of a can. My other daughter had the chicken quesadilla. It was decent but not awe-inspiring. My wife had the Combo #6 and the taco shell was limp and rather greasy, the enchilada was the same as mine, and the beans were like Rosarita from a can. Overall? Not going back. My wife raved about this place, it's service, table-side guac, huge and relatively inexpensive drinks. So when we were invited to attend dinner there, I agreed. I'm normally more of a Facebook reviewer, but promised Plaza Azteca that I'd give them a Yelp review - because I was not impressed. Like other ethnic foods, I rarely order something other than what I normally order and rarely go to another restaurant once I've found one I like. Both were mistakes last night. The restaurant was not overly busy, and we went early. The pluses first: a 34 oz draft beer, I wasn't expecting that when I ordered the 'big one', so this should have put me in a good mood. Their patio, enough room to accommodate even large crowds. They ended there. The negative - their chips seem store bought. Their salsa is more watery than every other Mexican restaurant in town (I didn't think that was possible). I thought they just brought the fresh guac to you, but you have to order it (This wasn't explained, nor offered). The service - I'm so used to being overly attended to at a Mexican restaurant in Richmond, so maybe I'm bias - Our waiter, Manuel, was no where to be found most of the night. He didn't even have time to bring our entrees, which was missing one, and another incorrect, there were two other tables on the patio at this point. He never bothered to see if our food was correct and enjoyable after it was dropped off, neither were. Then, 20 minutes later he brought the checks - my wife, 8.5 months pregnant, wanted dessert, it wasn't offered and he seemed annoyed when we asked for it. The food at every other Mexican joint in town is better, service is far superior, and the drinks you can find just about anywhere. We won't be going back, and will still with the three other places we know and love. The bad reviews are deserved, I went to speak with the manager, and he didn't have time to listen to me - he was watching his hostesses and the soccer game behind me. Should you go anyways, study the menu - make sure your order matches the description, and then remember - every other Mexican restaurant in town has better tasting food. read more

This is only my 2nd ever yelp review, but am compelled to after yet another bad visit (we were giving them another shot) - which will be our last visit. There were very few customers tonight, especially for a Friday night (630pm) in Short Pump, first clue I guess. No drink menu given, even after we asked for one - we were even sitting in the bar area! Cheese dip for the chips had that horrible burnt taste to it that comes from the whole batch being scorched. We didn't say anything, just pushed it aside, as we already weren't getting a great experience from our server, and didn't want to be "those people". Food came, and it tasted AWFUL - pretty standard fare too - shrimp tacos, carne asida tacos, enchiladas. We paid the bill and my daughter had to use the bathroom - she came out and told me that the floor was so wet that she actually fell down in there (she's a teen). As we were leaving, I told our server what had happened, so they could go clean things up before someone got hurt. He nodded and smiled, but was still standing around when we walked out the door. Never, ever, will we go there again. There are way too many restaurants in Short Pump to settle for this place. read more
