We took our meal to go. Food was ready quickly. Chips and guac were great. We ordered the fajitas, which were yummy. But they put all of the toppings for the fajitas together in one container, which was gross. The retried beans, sour cream and salsa all ended up mixed together. I don't know why this place only gets three stars. It's not the best highest quality food in the world, and I guess most people are right in what they say about the other Broad Street location being better overall, but they have consistently decent food, great chips and salsa and the strongest margaritas that you can find in town. What's not to like, I ask you? All of this is served by a very fast and friendly staff. I highly recommend the fajitas, the burrito mex, which is my hands down favorite, or the Carne Asada. I don't generally get chicken when I'm out so I can't speak to that. I am a regular here and I haven't been disappointed yet. Always a huge and hearty meal that I couldn't dream of finishing and a small margarita that makes you feel happy inside :). Anyone who gets the jumbo Margarita has a serious drinking problem, just saying :) they are massive!! I will always come here when I need to feel fat and happy. Ordered a 3-enchilada dinner called Enchilada Nortenas for takeout. The chorizo/potato enchilada was missing from the dinner and the pork enchilada had one big piece of burned, hard and stringy pork. Tried to cut into the pork enchilada and the pork came out of the tortilla in one big piece. Returned it to the restaurant and asked for a manager. Guy out front said no manager was available but the name on his name tag was J. Lopez and I had spoken with a J. Lopez over the phone earlier who identified himself as Jose Lopez. When I mentioned this he confessed he was the same person. Refused to refund my money and never apologized. read more

Tonight was third and last try of Azteca over the last year. They have a nice interior and do serve a nice looking plate, but like our previous visits, we found the food to be lacking compared to other restaurants in the area (El Paso/Mexico/Casa Grande) and the service poor. I was served a dish of fish tacos with taco shells so thin and soggy, they could not be picked up without falling apart. I would have liked to have complained to the waiter, but that would have required him to have checked in with us at some point in the evening. Unfortunately, there was a table of high school girls nearby and I think that cornered the market on his available consciousness. We gave him about 15 minutes beyond the point at which everyone was done and then I had to get up and seek out the hostess, which broke his trance. Really not worth the trip. Really. read more

Not even worth writing a detailed review. Typical cheap mexican restaurant that covers up their lack of culinary skills with cheese and wraps it in a tortilla. Uncomfortable seating, sugary cocktails from a mix, horrid wine, building seems old and run down (although it can't possibly be that old). I'm not sure whether or not to feel sorry for the waiter. His coward of a manager wouldn't come to my table after two requests. My family's order was screwed up twice and they up-charged us $5 for adding vegetables to our $10 chicken and rice meal. I usually go to this restaurant at least once a week but after what happened yesterday they will NEVER see me again. A waiter came out of the kitchen and dropped a bowl of salsa all over the floor which then splattered all over one of the people at the table and all over her baby. The waiter them proceeded to laugh an walk away not even offering a napkin. When the manager was told about this he treated her like trash when she asked to 50% off her $7 bill since she and her baby were covered in salsa The manager then proceeded to tell her no and that we could leave and never come back. HORRIBLE SERVICE! This was 3rd or 4th times we went there. Never had a bad or great experience, but this time everything changed. Our friends came back from military deployment and they want to celebrate their return to US with Mexican food ( there no Mexican restaurants in Germany) So we took them to Plaza Azteca. From beginning service was horrible. We had to wait for the waiter to come over and take our drinks order, even though restaurant was not busy at all. When we asked for guacamole bar to be served to our table, the guy show up at my end of the table and I told him that girls on the other end of the table want avocados ( we had only 7 people, 4 adults and 3 kids) he given me a dirtiest look and rolled his eyes. If I didn't know any better I thought I asked him to go back to Mexico and bring some fresh avocados. Later on when waiter brought our food, they made a mistake on our friend child food order. It took them over 30 minutes to bring new order. Waiter never checked on us throughout the whole evening. When it was time to leave, our bill was like $70 or so. I really didn't want to leave anything, but felt kind of bad so I left $5 bill ( I figure even though the service was horrible and staff give us such attitude I should leave something). While walking out to the door waiter follow us and given me my $5 back, saying something that we need it more than he does. I really want to say something back, but I didn't want to make a scene. NEVER EVER AGAIN me and my family would go back to PLAZA AZTECA. There is a "Mexico" restaurant right down the street and food is much better, and staff are not incompetent and rude. I took my family of 16 people to this Plaza Azteca (in front of Hilton Short Pump) for dinner. It wasn't terribly busy- no wait time and plenty of empty tables. Manager (Jose) assigned only one server (Katty) who was on her 3rd day of employment. She was nice, but the experience was a disaster. Our food took over an hour to come out (seriously over 60 minutes), most of it was cold and had to be sent back, had errors (we ordered everything vegetarian but they brought out beef tacos), and some of it was poorly made- even after being taken back to "remake" it. Our server was clearly embarrassed and apologized several times. Despite witnessing and knowing all of this, Jose didn't do anything except apologize and offered to take $20 off the total bill. He asked us to come back and "give us another chance". Jose, you seem like a nice guy, but you may wish to reflect on your customer service and management skills. You're on the way to losing customers and compromising the reputation of Plaza Azteca at this pace. read more

Usually I do not like to go to mexican restaruants but my husband wanted to try the Azteca next to where lived in Henrico Va. How glad i am that i went. It was superb. Everything we ordered not only came quickly it was absolutely fabulous. I would recommend this restaruant to anyone. We had the shrimp tostados and the Pescado Azteca. Dessert was Flan. We had an excellent time. My wife ordered the San Jose Burrito and I ordered Enchiladas Chipotle. Both were tasty, large portions, and came out very quickly. The service was quick and nice. Horrible experience at this place, please do NOT ever go to that place. The attitude of the staff is very horrible & disgusting. These guys do not know how to treat their guests/customers at all. All of the staff speak Mexican and no one understands some basic English, we were waiting for almost 35 minutes just to place an order, and then the ordered items came after 30 minutes ... funniest part is the other customers who came after us were served before us. They guy who served us does not ever care to take the order. After couple of reminders to other staff guys, then he comes and says "Are you ready" ... won't anyone be ready after 30 minutes wait. Sucks!!!! When asked we wanted to reach out to their manager, they come back saying he is busy. After we finished, while heading out, someone who is (guessing he may be the manager) making fun saying 'See you tomorrow' with big laugh. Utterly shame on him. I wish I could give it zero. I was not satisfied with the consistency or taste of the guacamole at the Short Pump location. I voiced this to the bartender who told me that's the way it is sometimes. Since he was dismissive about my concerns, I did not leave a tip. Something didn't sit well with me and I should have taken a picture of my signed copy because the waiter/bartender took it upon himself to add a $5 tip to my amount due. That is STEALING!!!! I would not recommend any location that would blatantly steal regardless of the amount. While I love the locations on Brook Road and 6623 West Broad, I would not recommend this location. read more
