My experience with the service here was awful. I'm so disappointed. I was with a group of 5. The waiter took our order then came back a few minutes later and asked me once again, what I wanted. I wanted the quesadilla racheros with chicken, so a very basic order. The food came out for everyone but me. Mine came out about 15 minutes later. My party was done eating by the time I got my food. This used to be one of our favorite places. IMO prices have risen and quality has dropped. We spent just over $60 for tacos carne asada, a couple of quesadillas, cheese sauce and queso fundido. The carne asada was dry, the beans were liquidy, and the queso fundido was so greasy it was almost inedible. About the only thing that wasn't problematic was the rice. It's not even a case of the cost - I'd happily pay it if the food justified it. Sadly, after several sub-par visits I don't think it does any longer. read more

Meh! I came here two times on a recent trip to Richmond. The first time was good. Chips/Salsa and table side guac were all good. I got the chicken fajita salad, and was pretty happy with it (could have used a bit more flavor... sour cream, crema, or some cotija). A second visit was where I saw the true meh-ness of this place. I ordered a beef enchilada with beans/rice. When the food arrived, the plate was hot, but the food was luke warm. That's a huge warning to me that their food is potentially not being kept warm enough before it is plated. The enchilada had a 'not quite done' quality to it. The beans (jeez, how do you screw up beans and rice?) would normally be the thing that saves the meal, but even those were just kind of bland. The rice? Don't get me started. I obviously didn't touch much of the meal, and at no point did my waiter ask about a full plate that only had a few bites taken (that friends is crummy customer service). I paid, left a tip (not waiter's fault that the food is bad), and walked out. The manager was at the front counter, and I let him know why I had not been able to eat my meal. His response was, "Oh, that's too bad. I hope you have a good day." What. The. Heck?! I guess they are so used to people eating what is served without complaint that they are not worried about one bad meal. Richmond peeps, there are places with far better Mexican food in the area. Don't be satisfied with mediocre food that is not representative of the amazing variety of options that most Mexican restaurants have to offer. Also, if anything goes wrong, the management might not do what you need them to do. Make good choices people! read more

The place has decent food, but is too run-down. The tableside guacamole was delicious and it was fun to watch the guy make it . But, the giant Tip jar was a major turn off (no didn't tip him, isn't that what we are paying for?!). The veggie fajitas were good - but you can go to any tex/mex restaurant for them. The service was poor from the minute I walked in. They seemed like they didn't want to serve me 30 minutes before closing. I asked if they rather me leave or order take out and they unconvincingly insisted I stay. So I did but I wish I didn't. The cheese dip was lukewarm and had no spice. It tasted like cheez wiz. Then I got a mushroom and cheese quesadilla which was burnt and swimming in grease. All this awfulness set me back $10. It wasn't worth $1. Hit or miss. I've had staff that is really nice and attentive and staff that looked as if they were about to quit. The first few times we went the food was amazing. I know the coronavirus is very dangerous; but I really felt safe due to the cleanliness of this restaurant. My server, Idania, is very engaging and very attentive. She gives top notch service! Customers beware! This was our 2nd visit and 2nd time we were overcharged ($6.99) for the queso. The server said we were charged for a large portion as opposed to the small portion. We asked for the menu and pointed out that the menu lists only one size and price $5.50. She then said their computer system has 3 sizes and prices, and we were charged $6.99 for the larger. I explained it is not ok to charge customers a price that is not on the menu and asked for the manager. The server came back and said she corrected the price to the smaller size. So the manager may or may not know and the system is not likely to be fixed. read more

I met a few of my friends from work here last week and this is the first time I've been to this location. My favorite thing was how large the booths were and they were comfy! They easily fit six people and there was plenty of space for all of our food and drinks! A friend of mine ordered guac and they made it at our table....so cool! The drinks are pretty decent for the price. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. Parking is easy. They have a large parking lot with plenty of spaces. There are several Plaza Azteca locations in Richmond now and this newer location west of Short Pump Towne Center has the same food menu as the others but different drinks menu than Richmond's first location further east on Broad. I point this out because after a particularly challenging work day I was craving my favorite black jack margarita and decided to stop here for dinner before heading to Wegmans. Well, they don't do black jack margaritas at this location. Dang! Instead, I ordered the drink special, a guava margarita, which was very good, but unfortunately the taste of the food wasn't great. It's also a little more laid back feeling here, and with brighter lighting and less rustic, less festive feeling. If you are in the area or staying at one of the nearby hotels, this is a fine and clean place to eat, just not my favorite of this chain restaurant. read more

Well, I usually love Plaza Azteca. I go to the one on Glenside and the one on Brook Rd. I was out in Short Pump and decided to go to this one for lunch. Big mistake! First, our waiter was super inattentive. He would come by to check on us maybe every 15 minutes. My sister had to ask another waiter for refills, I had to get our own to go boxes, and I almost died of thirst because I never got my refill. The icing on the cake..... The roaches were very attentive! They were all over the wall and there were two on our table!!! I was so disgusted. When we talked to our waiter, he wasn't apologetic at all. We spoke to the manager (who was very apologetic) about the issues and he said he would talk to our waiter and call the exterminator. I will not be returning to this location. I appreciate the manager being apologetic and empathetic (that's why I gave 1 star)but I can not eat at a restaurant where the roaches don't mind popping out. read more

Went to Plaza Azteca for lunch with my son and his best friend. The chips were perfect but the salsa totally lacked any taste or authentic flavor. Someone referred to the salsa as more like tomato sauce which was disappointing but true. Two of us ordered the lunch fajitas which were very good, however, they did skimp out on the warm tortillas, rice and sour cream. My son had the chicken burrito which was your basic burrito but still lacking flavor. As for the service, our waiter was not friendly, welcoming, or appreciative of our business. With so many Mexican restaurants in the Richmond area that compete for the same business I would have expected a better experience. I was anxious until they arrived. I was amazed about the presentation. Presentation? When did you ever think a Mexican restaurant cared about such things? Maybe Vegas. Here, they did! It looked great. The rice was different, the beans unique, the fish tacos were fabulous. It was as if they get their wholesale products from somewhere different from EVERY other Mexican restaurant. Not only was the food good, but the portions were large. The decor is very nice. They did a good job making the place look authentic without that festive Cinco de Mayo ambiance most places wind up with. Chips good. My wife had a chicken & spinach quesadilla with a cheese enchilada. She really enjoyed the main meal and also was amazed with the presentation. The only thing that could have been improved was the service. The service was great at times and gone at the end when we wanted to check out. They also gave us the check and thought we would just pay at the table. Took a while to find out that we had to take the check to the counter near the door. This place never disappoints! I normally get a chicken quesadilla because theirs is so good, and I have to get the white queso sauce and rice on the side. The sauce is perfect on my rice and the complimentary chips. My quesadilla was good as always but I sure wish someone in the kitchen would cut down the big chunks of chicken into smaller bites. I always have to open it up to make it shred into small pieces so it will be evenly spread through the tortilla. The best part of this is I just learned that they deliver to my house!!! I tried it and the food was hot.. and came pretty quickly. The only thing to remember when ordering this is if you get something like a quesadilla, they dont travel that well.
