This was my first dining in experience in 3 months due to COVID and I was really happy with my experience. The staff was friendly and all wearing masks. People were seated in booths spaced out. They had us scan a code to pull up the menu on our phones so paperless menus. The food came out timely and was really great. I ordered seafood chimichangas while my friends got fajitas. Ordered here for the first time via Uber Eats and the food not only took TWO HOURS to be ready (not including the 10 min drive the driver had to make to deliver)... but it came looking like this. The nachos that cost $11 looks like this. And the quesadilla that cost $13???? Looks like actual dog food. And literally nothing stayed inside the tortilla. Came here when I went on a brief trip to Richmond. The restaurant was quite empty when I came on a Tuesday night, however, it seems like a place that would fill up on a weekend evening. Unfortunately, we missed happy hour which ends at 7pm. We were given complimentary chips and salsa for the table, and we also ordered queso, which turned out to be quite liquidy. We went in for an early lunch and the place was pretty empty. We were greeted and seated immediately and of course chips and salsa came right after. Why do they have to give you that deliciousness before you order?? I could eat a bowl of chips and salsa without an entrée and be more than satisfied! And why not...let's add cheese dip to the mix! We order our lunches and chatted and before you know it our food was on the table. It pays to go early. Very quick service and a cheesy heavenly Mexican meal. It was nice to not have to ask for drink refill and the even refilled our chips when I asked (I'm greedy...and regret the comatose effect it had on me later!). I've had their table side guacamole and it is to die for! You can get it as mild or spicy as you'd like it and it's made in front of you...no fresher than that! I got the Burrito San Jose I believe, that comes with the cheese sauce. It was good, the portions were large, especially that with my takeout that gave me a large bag of chips with two types of salsa/dip. The reason for the one star was that they forgot to include any napkins or utensils :( Note too that they don't have any drinks for you to take out (all alcoholic I believe). read more

We ate dinner here tonight. My wife had the chicken spinach enchilada and I had the spinach enchilada. We waited more than 30 minutes for the food to come out. When it did it was very cold. We sent the food back and the waiter just grunted at us. The manager brought it back and made some lame excuse about it being cold and that was normal. But he told us it was hot, very hot. They did not prepare a new meal but heated the existing meal. And the plates were hot but my food was still cold. My wife's food was hot. So I sent mine back and told the waiter to take it off the bill. More grunts. We never got an apology and the manager never came back. I will never eat here again. read more

The service was very poor: it took a long time to get chips, our we had to go to the drink station with our glasses to get refill, eventually had to go to the front desk to finally get our bill and get out. The food was marginal. I had fish tacos which turned out to be a small, thin, overcooked piece of fish-jerky with some cabbage and a small container of onions and tomatoes. We had friends tell us they loved this place, so we decided to give it a try after a visit to Short Pump. It was a tale of two meals. My wife liked her shrimp cocktail just fine, but I ordered the Mexico City Pasta, which was not good. It was so new to the menu, that our waitress didn't even know what it was, and asked to see my menu to read about it. I decided to go ahead and order it to try something new. Wish I had stuck to a burrito. When it came out, I wasn't really sure what it was. I ate a little bit of it, then asked to see a menu, thinking maybe I had mis-read the description. What I got, was pasta with a pasty sauce, and grilled chicken on top. The chicken was good, the pasta had a really odd taste. Kind of seemed more like a mole sauce, than beans. In fact, there was a single bean (one) in the entire dish. When I re-read the menu description, sure enough, it says "covered in cheese and cilantro". There was nothing on the noodles other than the chicken. My belief is that because it was a new dish, they really didn't know how to make it yet. Service was okay, and the restaurant seemed clean. All in all, my wife liked her meal well enough that I would give it another try. Just wouldn't try the Mexico City Pasta again. read more

This is by far one of the worst meals I've ever had. I ordered fajitas for two and a Chile Relleno to go order. First of all the Chile relleno was so tough I couldn't eat it The pepper would not cut with a steak knife. First impression was not favorable as it was a Friday night and the restaurant was pretty empty. Even though the restaurant had plenty of open tables, we were sat right by the front door and front desk. Unfortunately, for us, there were about five employees who were bored and extremely obnoxious. The employees spent the first 45 minutes of our dinner, throwing stuff at each other, chasing each other around, playing with the radio so that made a screeching noise over and over. You eat out to relax And enjoy, but there was no relaxing or enjoyment here with a very obnoxious staff. The food was extremely bland with no flavor. That's absolutely is not a Mexican restaurant, more of a American restaurant that tries to make some extremely bland versions of Mexican food. The prices were high for extremely low quality, low flavor food. Probably one of the worst Mexican restaurants I've ever been to in my life. Don't waste your time or money. read more

I am very surprised at the negative comments. I live where this chain is based, and OK some locations are not as good as others but this location is just fine. We spend at least over a $100.00 whenever we go there and sometimes we like to pickup our food to go. This restaurant charges you extra money even for the salsa which is supposed to be part of the Mexican dishes, how cheap is that. They will be losing more customers with this kind of poor attitude. It was a rainy night, I was starving, and I had a ridiculously long day. Plaza Azteca is maybe 50 steps from the door of the Hilton over the bridge and through the side door, perfect for my laziness that evening. The food here is pretty standard for a chain, so be sure to keep your expectations in check. Chips and salsa are complimentary and you actually get two salsas. The regular salsa has a nice flavor and packs a little kick. On the other hand, the white salsa was not my thing. I ordered the burrito with shredded pork and chipotle sauce. The pork was a little dry, but the dish overall was good. The margaritas are good and strong, a medium is quite large. Like the food, the decor is pretty standard. They have two large rooms for seating, one is more bar-like with bar seating, high tables, and booths around the edges. The other room just has a lot of booths. They also have patio seating. So why 4 stars, the service I had was stellar. I wanted to watch the Rangers/Ottawa playoff game, but I didn't know what channel it was on. The guys searched desperately to find the game, but couldn't find the channel. Apologetically they put on ESPN. Throughout my meal they were very attentive and checked in, but not in an obnoxious or over bearing way. While the food maybe 3 stars, the service is an awesome 5! read more

I have to admit that every time I have come here, this place is very clean. The food comes fast and the service isn't bad. The mixed drinks taste a little watered down. The food is so so, but I also compare it to the more established plazas in the Hampton roads area. It seems that you pay the same here but get smaller portions. Actually, they were happy I ordered it and even brought me seasoned pinto beans (not refried) as a side which I didn't order. The food was really good and I can be picky about Mexican food. We also had cheese dip but I was a little disappointed about it because they didn't season it with green chilies or anything. It was simply queso blanco melted down with leche. I tried this out despite the bad reviews and I'm so glad I did! To start they were definitely busy, which is always a great sign for a restaurant. But the service did not suffer from the crowd. We sat in the bar area which has big beautiful chairs that are slightly heavy so be warned. The chips are some of the best I have ever had and were even better with the cheese dip and salsa. (I went back a week later and got the at table guac which wasn't amazing but still very good). My husband got a combo that he always gets at Mexican restaurants with a chili relleno. It was one of the best he has ever had! I did al a carte tacos, the chicken and beef are both very good. (I got the enchiladas later and they were also very good!) Their menu has a great variety for picky eaters with all the classics plus some. BEST part? The house margaritas!!! I got strawberry, while the people with me with me got the peach, the raspberry and the original. All equally delicious in their own way. The house made mix is definitely what does the trick! This has been the best Mexican food we have found since moving here two months ago. We've been to chuys quite a bit but felt that this place was more authentic. We both got tacos, fish has really good sauce on top and shrimp has so much shrimp. You get three plus rice and beans and the portions are huge. Queso is also traditional white queso and was really good as well as their salsa. We will definitely be back here! read more
