Very Americanized, but the fish sauce was surprisingly pretty authentic. First of all, why are there tomatoes and carrots in my vermicelli bowl... And where is the chargrilled chicken...this was sautéed chicken atop a bed of noodles. I had also ordered iced viet coffee and it was weak. The shrimp were nicely flavored but the vegetables were cut too thick and weren't marinated, Finally the chix wings. They aren't whole wings, they are chopped pieces of wings in a heavy batter. I went here with my parents (my mom has never been). They had a lot of pescatarian friendly dishes which is perfect for my parents. The chive pancakes are gooey and tasty. The salad dressing says spicy but my dad who can't handle spice liked it. I had the duck pho which was pretty good, very simple in flavors. The duck was cooked very well. Stop by on a Sunday afternoon as I was in the area. Cute little place, intimate, has bar seatng as well. Hostess was very nice. I was able to sit immediately with no reservation. We came here because it was freezing outside and was right across the street from the hotel we were staying at. We wanted some Pho. I ordered the vegetarian with tofu and hubby had the beef. We also had an appetizer of grilled bok choy which was in a delicious sauce. Hubby had a Saigon beer and I had a cocktail with sake, pineapple, and cranberry that was not too sweet, just right. The $9 fries were literally thrown in a service tray and messy, the shrimp soup was decent, but it had a weird aftertaste. And I got the the curry chicken for my Dad, I was embarrassed by how the presentation looked to give to him and more so pissed by spending over $20 for that. This place has amazing and kind service! They stayed open late for me to catch up with my friends and were so pleasant. Honestly 5/5 for service. The restaurant is very homely with limited seating but it's a classic Vietnamese restaurant. The food was above average with plenty of vegetarian options. The curry puffs not pictured were really good. The curry was good too with flavor. Normally vegetarian Vietnamese food lacks flavor but I was pleasantly surprised. This review's just for takeout. Prompt delivery, delicious fried dumplings, and flavorful, fresh ingredients. But like others here, I have high expectations for Vietnamese food...you don't even have to downgrade expectations from the west coast for NYC, as Brooklyn's Hanco chain is terrific. But that's also why, in addition to being disappointed that these guys don't have even the standard classic mystery meat banh mi let alone a sardine version (trust me, both are epic), I was let down by the beef bun. No cilantro -- I had to add it at home. And this should be quality grilled beef, not just the boiled ends that are ok for pho and nothing else. I stumbled upon this cute and cozy spot while searching for Vietnamese restaurants in the UWS and am glad I made the visit! I dined in on the later end of a Monday night and it wasn't too busy, so it was a great place to catch up with a friend without having to chat over any noise or next to other people. As an homage to the restaurant name, I ordered the plum wine, which was sweet and delightful. I normally would have ordered pho, but was in the mood for a rice dish instead, and was surprisingly impressed by the spicy duck curry. It was thankfully (depending on who you ask) not too spicy and the panang curry was delicious and beautifully balanced with the addition of lychee. The duck was also moist but still had crispy skin, which was my favorite part. The highlight of my experience was definitely the staff, however. They were so attentive and gracious enough to not rush us while eating (we did respectfully left at their closing time though). The level of care extended to even after the meal, when our waitress ran to catch up with us after I had accidentally left my purse behind. I am very grateful, not only to still be in possession of my wallet but also for the kindness that was extended during my entire interaction with Plum. I'm a little disappointed with this Vietnamese spot.. it's very pricey for the amount of food they give you (maybe I'm used to California portions when it comes to Pho). We got the veggie pho with a side of tofu, a side of beef and extra noodles. Plum Vietnamese for me falls in between 3 and 4 stars. The ambiance is nice and staff were great but the food was alright. Not bad and not great at the same time. Missing the usual side of condiments that go with pho and the broth itself was somewhat bland and missing the aromatics you'd expect like star anise. We had several different dishes -- pho and a curry. The curry was okay, but the chicken in it was all in a large clump, as though it was cooked and being held, cold, rather than freshly cooked. The pho had the same issue. But the broth was also nearly flavorless. And the greens that usually come with pho -- peppers, basil, lime-- were almost not there. Two baby basil leaves and a lime wedge in one of those tiny plastic containers that you get when you get salsa to go at a Mexican restaurant. All this for a $20 pho. I would not go back. read more

Unfortunately, the broth in the pho does not taste like it was boiled for 12 hours. I had the chicken pho with the chicken broth. The chicken breast was also very bland and dry. The ambience is lovely, clean and modern. I loved sitting there. The service was also perfect, low touch but enough to not feel left out. With the cold day lingering around, the soup was much needed. The chicken pho's broth was extremely light. I swore it was just water, at first look. The soup had a light brine and chicken taste, but this contrasts starkly from other pho places. I'm used to chicken pho with a dense broth and richer chicken profile. The worse pho bowl I ever had. I know NYC is known to have bad viet food everywhere but so far this was the worse pho noodle period. I got it delivered tonight and the moment I opened the soup, it doesn't smell like pho at all. It smells like American beef broth. I got the Super Bowl pho for $19 and it came with steak chunks that was very hard to chew. What an embarrassment. The noodles were falling apart so it's like eating pieces of noodles in bland American beef broth. Also got the egg roll and it taste like those cheap lunch special frozen egg rolls. My date and I received a comfortable two-top next to the counter. We used our Yelp check-in offers for a free lychee soda and thai iced tea. I also ordered a happy hour cocktail upon noticing that happy hour runs every day of the week from open to 7:00 PM. That's quite a persuasive argument, and the cocktail was pleasant, a sweet wet treat. Food: outstanding. Get the curry puffs (vegetarian), baked in a flaky pastry, served hot: don't burn your tongue! So good. I considered a banh mi but went for the What's a Bun, the signature combo vermicelli bowl topped with grilled chicken, spring rolls, and a fried egg. Tons of fresh veggies, you practically get a full salad within the bowl. Filling and nutritious. We also ordered the Super Bowl pho,which has a lot of meat in it: the thick brisket was my favorite, followed by the thinly sliced round steak and the chewy pieces of grilled steak. The broth deserves recognition for its flavor and clarity. This is that classic bowl of pho to seek out when you get the craving. Overall, Plum is awesome. We started with the steamed dumplings which were flavorful with a hint of spice. Really nice. Growing up in San Jose, CA I think my standards for Viet food are different lol but out of the viet places I've tried in NYC, I think Plum was solid! I got the fish cakes and vietnamese crepe which were both decent but nothing special. However, I do like how fast the service is here! Even though it was busy, we got our food in 5-10 minutes. We loved it! The place was cozy and quiet. We went during weekend lunch and it was moderately full, no wait. Both got bun, 1 person got "what's a bun" and another the beef bun. Both great, but preferred the "what's a bun" for good value. Fairly healthy meal that was definitely very filling. Also got the Lychee soda as part of yelp check-in, which was good, but probably will try something different next time.
