Food was great but not a great value for the price (2 cheeseburgers, 2 shrimp po-boys, 2 adult beverages and 2 teas = $101 after tip). With two tables seated inside and a handful of tables outside, it took over an hour to get our meal. Every table around us asked the waitress what was taking so long. I recently had lunch with 3 of my friends at Plum's on a Monday over the noon hour. The service was terrible. From start to finish, our lunch lasted 90 minutes. The restaurant was moderately busy, and there weren't enough waitresses working. Our waitress was pleasant. However, after she took our order we had to flag her down anytime there was a problem. We ordered coffee, and it was lukewarm. It took 10 minutes to have the coffee replaced. Our order was simple enough. Three bowls of soup and an egg salad sandwich with an order of sweet potato fries. It took 45 minutes to have our order delivered. Getting the check was an episode as well. While the food was good, I won't be returning. Plum's is coasting on it's reputation and is not the only option when it comes to dining in Beaufort. SW read more

Restaurant is cramming way too many tables both inside and out. Even the wait staff couldn't manage to get around. Our waitress was very slow and seemed out of it that day. Shrimp salad which was $10 was a very small size. Oysters on the half shell were reasonably priced but small... the service was the worst. While vacationing on Hilton Head Island, SC about 50 minutes drive, me, my wife and 2 couples went to Beaufort for dinner. We came upon Plum's and do glad we did. Our experience started with a very friendly young lady who was terrific. She brought out fresh warm biscuits with pecan butter; delicious. We ordered oysters that were fresh, cold and very good. I ordered the Santa Fe; a linguine dish wis black beans, cherry tomatoes with grilled shrimp with cream sauce (I substituted the chicken with shrimp). I was surprised that the dish definitely had a spicy kick to it that was surprise since the menu made no mention of it. My friend entrees also were on the spicy side, though very good'. The only recommendation that I passed on to the hostess to tell the chef was to hold off on the spice hot dishes if they are not specific in describing the entree on menu or have waitress explain to customers that the dishes are normally spicy do the customer can decide to change it or accept it, therefore there is no surprise when you take your first bite. Dinner was terrific, setting was very nice with view of the bay or river and service was excellent. I highly recommend his recommend this restaurant and would go back again. read more

I have been waiting for almost an hour for our food. Love the ambiance and the view of the ocean is great but no reason a practically empty restaurant should take this long to put out food. I got the crab cakes and they were okay, no lemon and not enough remoulade. My fiancé got the mahi mahi and it was very dry, they managed to mess up fried okra, which is pretty hard to to do. My mother got the shrimp and grits and because she is too polite to ever say anything I can't say for sure what was wrong but she barely touched her plate. I wish it was good but I was disappointed. My lunch companions were pleased with their choices however, I ordered the Greek salad and I was in no way satisfied with my selection. First of all it consisted of mainly lettuce. Only a few onion slices and even fewer quarters of cucumber. There were two cherry tomatoes, both which were rotten and the dressing was very oily. I would recommend that either the restaurant remove the Greek salad from its menu or learn how to make one correctly. At the very least suggest that future diners steer clear of this menu item. EXTREMELY Disappointed. To start off, we were seated without menus or water. Then we started ordering drinks and appetizers and everything we ordered was not available. While waiting for our food, we noticed ALL the staff cooking in the back had huge beards and long hair and not one person was wearing a hair net. Service was absolutely awful. Waitress was not responsive, waiting 20 minutes for our drinks only to be told that they didn't have mint for their signature drink. My drink then came and my husbands didn't come for another 10 minutes - we ordered soup and waited another 10 minutes for that and then another 10 minutes for utensils to now eat our cold soup. When she came back to give us utensils, she spilled my drink all over me and my soup. Finally after complaining, they told us we didn't have to pay for our not eaten soup or drinks. Excellent fried green tomatoes, pimento cheese and this out of this world bacon jam! Yes, Bacon jam!!! I had the crab cake sandwich and my wife had the gumbo. Both were quite good. I don't know why this place doesn't have a higher star rating. At a mid-level price point (read: won't break the bank), they offer a variety of entrees, appetizers and sandwiches. I've eaten here a few times now and the first thing that always impresses me is the terrific service! Beaufort has a considerable customer service issue (or perhaps it's this generation of waitstaff) but Plums nails it every time. So starting with great service, they also have excellent food. I highly recommend the fried green tomatoes, the peel and eat shrimp and honestly, I love that they have egg salad on the menu... And it's really good! The kitchen is accommodating and I have never had a bad meal here. My mom loves their shrimp and grits and dad enjoys their sandwiches. It's a perfect place to go on a family-sort-of-afternoon when you want a menu that speaks to everyone! They have a nice patio that faces the water - if it's chilly and you still want to be outside, they have heat umbrellas. Oh, and the bartender mixes up some nice cocktails too! My last two dining experiences here have been terrible. They were not crowded, yet the wait for our food (party of 5) was extremely long. Last night we waited more than an hour from the time we ordered. One member of our party got their food and finished dining before the other meals arrived. When our food was served, all dishes were cold. Our waitress did eventually offer fresh grits but we had already been there too long. We asked to speak with the manager twice before she came to our table, which was after we paid our bills. She was extremely insincere about the quality of our food or the service we received. She did eventually offer us a dessert to take home, which we declined. I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Luckily we got in before noon, because it quickly got packed. I guess that there must be some very good meals on the lunch menu to choose from. Unfortunately, our food was just fair. I ordered the (blackened) flounder Po-boy. The flounder was very thin and only covered a portion of a very good-sized roll. Loads of lettuce and tomato, though. If it wasn't for the remoulade sauce, there would have been no flavor to this very skimpy sandwich. I mean, come on: Can they spare just a little more fish? They could have gained a loyal customer, but now I will continue to look for better portions elsewhere when dining in Beaufort. My wife ordered the shrimp and grits, but fried crab over grits was delivered to the table instead. So it had to go back. The shrimp and grits also lacked flavor, so she had to add salt. Where many restaurants in the past used to over-salt their food, the pendulum has seem to have swung in favor of no salt. But this is a mistake. Adding salt afterwards is never as good as when it is cooked with it. This restaurant was very busy, and there were people waiting for tables. So maybe we just picked 2 of the not-so-best things on the menu. Our waitress, however, was very nice and attentive to our needs. We would go back, but not until after we sample some of the other restaurants in the area first. read more

Despite waiting at the host station for at least ten minutes with no attention being paid by the staff I really liked this place. It is right on the water, they have a nice menu and the food was amazing. I am not sure why there was such a wait to be seated and it would have been nice if our presence had at least been acknowledged but I am glad we stayed. We were able to be seated on the patio which was amazing. You have a great view of the Beaufort river and the swing bridge to St. Helena Island. Once we were seated our server was very attentive. My daughter and I were there for lunch and we decided to share a couple of entrees. We had the fried flounder po-boy and the shrimp and grits. The food was fresh and well seasoned. The shrimp and grits have a bacon gravy and it was so good I am going to have to try to recreate it when I am back home in Utah. There were eight shrimp so my daughter and I were able to both have a very decent portion of each. We weren't able to finish it because both portions were very generous. I'm currently at this restaurant, seated on the porch, enjoying their rendition of shrimp and grits (missing the Cajun flare) and I can't tell you for the life of me the name of my server (later found out her name is Maddie). Her greeting to us, three 20-something year old African American women after walking pass us three or four times was "What can I get y'all to drink"? I was a server before and I know sometimes it's hard to squeeze out a "hi, how are you today? I'm  ___ and I'll be your server," but when you turn to the next table where there's a white early to mid 30s couple with a warm welcome and engage in conversation, laughter, etc., I begin to question if it's US that you have a problem with. Will this be the day I ask to speak to a manager? (It was, first time EVER) Needless to say the view was amazing and the weather just right...but I won't be back. read more

My wife and I recently visited Plums. she had the pimento cheese, which was as she expected (from ordering it there over many years of patronage). I had the soup du jour, shrimp bisque, which our waitress highly recommended. In fact, the website reads that Plums has been making soup since 1986 (which I think is the year they opened). Unfortunately, the shrimp in the shrimp bisque were overcooked and the bisque seemed way too thick. The taste, too, was more bland than flavorful. My husband and I both ordered half portion entrees and I appreciate that they offer those. He had the low country boil which he said was great, especially the corn.
