I highly recommend this Atlantic Beach Gem, one or the best local spots, and a source of pride to all the locals. And with good reason, with its casual atmosphere, and friendly servers who know the menu. On this visit I ordered the Tell Tale Heart, a generous 1/2 burger, ordered medium, with a nice sear and plenty of juicy flavor. It's a Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger topped by an over easy egg that combines all those flavors beautifully. The Applewood Bacon is crispy, but not over cooked. The egg yield its liquid yolk over the sandwich drenching just the right flavor. The success of this Burger is that each of the ingredients are high quality so the flavors are blend well and yet keep their identity. Even the bun has its own good flavor. The fries here are also excellent and not just an add-on. Can't wait for several more vista so I can take a tour of the entire menu. This is a Go-To dining experience whenever you visit NE Florida. I do not recommend this restaurant with the current service in place. The outside seating and ambiance was great and temperatures were perfect for a Sunday evening. Having to wait 30 minutes + for the (over worked) waiter to arrive was . The margaritas were very mediocre (don't!) and the mahi mahi tacos were cold and chewy. The (over fried) fries indicated the cooking oil was way past it's prime. Great pub-style restaurant with an interesting theme. If you're into the dark and moody works for Edgar Allen Poe, then this place is the place for you. They are keeping it safe during this pandemic by offering plenty of outdoor seating and limited seating indoors. Their menus are available online so you won't have to touch any menus before eating. Here, it's all about the burgers. They have a nice selection of specialty burgers that will satisfy any craving. I ordered the Black Cat Burger which came with fried onions, chili, and applewood smoked bacon. It was decadent and delicious. The chili and fried onions worked really well together and the bacon gave it that nice hint of smokiness. I was, however, disappointed with their hand-cut fries. They were on the soft and soggy side, and I wish they had just cooked them a little longer. Also, I wondered if the oil they used to fry the fries was on the older side because the fries were definitely missing that nice golden color. Maybe I'm being a little generous with the four-star review. My hubby would argue to give them three stars, but I'm feeling generous today. I ordered the Tell-Tale Heart burger which was fantastic, medium which was cooked to perfection. The egg was perfect as the yolk oozed when I bit into it. Instead of fries I have ordered the house made coleslaw which is incredible. A must have! Unlike traditional slaw this has a vinaigrette base dressing along with bacon bits and bleu cheese crumbles. The Pit & Pendulum burger was cooked to perfection as well and the house made fries were great. The Buffalo Shrimp tacos tasted great with the shrimp being a nice size and a having just the right amount of hot sauce. What brought it all together was our server. This place is legit. The whole place is decorated celebrating Edgar Allen Poe.....as the name suggests. The bathroom in particular is near because the wallpaper is pages of Edgar Allen Poe's stories and there is audio of someone reading his stories. Our service was unreal. The staff was polite and most importantly fast. They seated us and had our food out very quick. The food was great. See pictures for the burgers. One of the things that stood out is that they have very good hamburger. I could almost eat the burger plain. The Gold Bug Plus is an excellent burger. Better be for $15. 1/2 beef. Brioche bun. Comes with a side. So really it's more like a $10 burger compared to places that don't include a side. Good beer selection. Bar food like quesadillas are also available but kind of meh. Always crowded in my experience. Fun spot if you are a tourist so an extra star for the people watching factor. I just got home from Poe's and I had to review this. This is my 3rd time going there...I figured give it one more try. This place gets a lot of good reviews...I'm not sure why! Now I've only ordered burgers so that's it.... I'm not sure of the name of the one I ordered tonight but it had applewood bacon on it (the best part) along with some BBQ sauce and cheese. I ordered it medium-rare like always...,came out perfectly cooked!! However there was ZERO JUICE....i didn't think it was possible for a burger to come out perfectly medium rare and be totally lacking any juice!! I thought most restaurants used 80-20 grind beef.. this was 90-10 at least! I also ordered the coleslaw....sounded amazing.... bacon and blue cheese coleslaw!!! Wow right...... nope The absolute most BLAND coleslaw ever!!! Which I thought would be impossible if it had bacon and blue cheese in it. How anyone in the kitchen could make this and taste it and say that it's good is mind boggling.....so disappointing! Needless to say I will not be returning here again! read more

I find absolutely horrible that after spending $52 on burgers and drinks Pie's uses a tow truck company that towed me 30 minutes after closing. It turned a great night ugly. Then to be threatened by the tow truck driver when he returned, yelling "he police's this lot" and circling me for a fight. Ok. So I'm not a poet. Heck I'm not that good at changing someone else's poem. What can ya do? Well, what I can do is write a review of Poe's Tavern. My family and I ate at Poe's last night. It's been several years, but we had fond memories of good food and a lively location. Well. . . You know how sometimes your memories of a place are great? That what you remember is that the place was fantastic and over the top and that you just can't wait to recapture the magic? And you know how sometimes, when you do go back, it just isn't the same? That its not quite as awesome as what you remembered? "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." Maybe it was all a dream. When we got to Poe's, the place looked very busy. But it certainly wasn't packed. At the host/hostess stand we were told that we could be seated either inside or outside. We chose inside. That seems to have been a mistake. The host sat up in the far corner of the building at an oddly shaped table. It wasn't good for conversation. It was dark. And it was right by the bathrooms. What happened to the lively place that I remembered? It was, what's a good word to describe it? Dreary? But we didn't complain. Instead, we sat. And sat. And sat. A waitress finally did appear after about five, or eight, or a million minutes of glancing around the large room. Looking at all of the other people that also seemed to be waiting. However, once the waitress made it to the table she was very attentive and apologetic for our wait. Took our drink order and hustled off to one of the many other tables she was covering. Its somewhat obvious that Poe's, at least last night, did not have enough wait staff for the size of the restaurant. Ok. Fine. She returned with our drinks and we ordered, hoping that things were now turning around. And then we again waited. And waited. And waited. Like I wrote before, the place wasn't super packed. And I guess I really don't think that it should take an hour to get our food. Perhaps, in addition to not having enough wait staff, there wasn't enough staff in the kitchen? This isn't exactly fine dining. Its a burger place. "Never to suffer would never to have been blessed." So the good. The food. No really. If you want a decent burger or a good salad, Poe's will hook you up. I also tried the Manhattan Fish Chowder. Large portion and very tasty. Seasoned well without being too salty. Two of us had salad and two had burgers. And we all enjoyed our meals. The best salads and burgers you will ever have? Well, probably not. But still pretty good. Just don't plan on getting in and out quickly. We passed on dessert, paid and left. It wasn't super expensive, but also isn't the cheapest option to go to for decent burgers at the beach. I really wanted to give Poe's a better review based upon our memories from prior visits. But it just wasn't a great visit. Maybe they were just having an off night? At least I hope so. I do think that we'll go back at least once more to give it another shot. And if it still leaves me somewhat disappointed? Quoth the Raven "Nevermore." read more

Went to Poes for a snack after the beaches art walk and surprisingly got a table outside right in front of a tv (the host was very accommodating and put the game we wanted to watch on that TV for us). We started with two local beers (love how they had pumpkin for fall!) and a salad which was enough to split. We weren't terribly hungry so we split the hop frog burger- cooked perfectly and was so delicious! Definitely enough food to split, especially with the sides of fries and onion straws (I added these to the burger for some extra crunch)! Good vibe, good service, and amazing burgers. I finally decided to come here after wanting to for a long time. It definitely blew me away. There was outdoor seating and indoor seating. But it was still, indoor/outdoor. It was dim inside which I really liked. There's so much art all over the walls. While we were waiting for our food, I went to the restroom with my daughter. It was so awesome. There was a red light with Edgar's work all over the wall and speaking over the speaker about his works. I loved that. I ordered the Annabelle Lee burger and was not disappointed. It had crab cake and remoulade sauce on top of the burger. I ordered it medium rare. The fries were shoe string and had a delicious seasoning on them. I had a shot of fireball and Mr. Pibb with it. My partner had the Black Cat burger. It was also really good. He ordered the House Margarita with a water. My daughter had the kids mac n cheese with fries and lemonade. Our server was really nice.
