My standards were set really high for Poe's Tavern... in fact I was actually more excited about coming here than any other place I've been to in Jax. I loved the Edgar Alan Poe pictures, poetry and history splattered about on the walls, and the laid back environment made me feel in place. The drink menu is intense in comparison to the food menu and I was let down to see that. It's simple, and honestly that might be the only plus in the situation. We had a couple glasses of Rosé (mmm I can still taste it) and he ordered one of their signature drinks (the first one that has ginger beer in it) it honestly tasted like ginger ale. I didn't taste any vodka at all and he was a bit disappointed with it. The FOOD: Queso con chilli, the most popular burger "The Rue Morgue", the burger of the day topped with Mac n cheese and the chocolate cake (not actually menu name) The queso and chili had a great flavor but they were both very thin and soupy like... Not fun to eat with chips at all!! The burgers were no where near the best I've tasted, but maybe if we would've ordered the burgers medium well then they would've been more juicy and flavorful. The shoe string fries were soggy, over seasoned and basically room temp.. They would've been great if they were actually fresh. I almost felt like our food sat in the window for 10 minutes. Poe's Tavern is located in a great location only a couple minutes from the beach. We came here for dinner around 7:30pm on a Friday night, at which point there was about a 25-minute wait. Their wait system shows your place in line via Yelp which was extremely convenient as it allowed us to walk around the area to see the sights a little bit while we waited. We were sat just inside the outdoor seating area, near the host stand outside of the main dining room. Since it's a large, open area, it was essentially being seated outside with a wall and large window next to us. Our server (whose name I regrettably cannot remember...maybe Madison?) was very helpful and pleasant to talk to. We wanted to check out some live music in the area and asked for her recommendations. Of course she talked up Poe's Tavern's own live music which was set to begin shortly after we finished our meal, but we wanted to take a walk around and she gave some great suggestions. I ordered the Tell-Tale Heart with fries, cooked medium. I'm an absolute sucker for anything with a fried egg on it, and the heart wants what the heart wants so I ran with it. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time which allowed me to sip my beer from their decent draft list. Poe's Tavern makes a solid burger. It was cooked to my requested medium, and the patty had decent seasoning. The bacon and egg were cooked to perfection, though the cheese could have been a little more melty. The biggest disappointment on my plate came in the form of french fries that were lukewarm when they hit the table and rapidly turned into cold french fries, which I believe are only enjoyed by those with a screw loose. I think because they were so busy they probably cook french fries in big batches rather than to order, and I just happened to get the dregs of one of those batches. It really took the wind out of my sails, and the burger wasn't quite enough to make up for it. Overall the dining experience was good, with good service and mostly well-executed food. For a place that leans on its burgers, they should really have their fry game on point as well. I'd be happy to give this place another shot. read more

We just had lunch and as much as I would like to give them 5 stars I can't. Their staff coming in and out of the kitchen with no masks and this is really inexcusable. I own a cafe and my crew would be in big trouble for this. You have to be responsible in every aspect of this virus. Their burgers were very good and service was good. It seems to me in a lot of restaurants they are very lack in this. The crew coming in the bathroom with no masks and no seat covers and no paper towels.. Home of the best burger in the world. I used to live in Jax and this past weekend, I drove 2 hours out of my way on a road trip to relive the glory of the "Rue Morgue." It's a half pound burger served on a bed of fries, and then covered in Chili and drowned in queso. Also, add bacon if you're feeling adventurous. This restaurant is themed after Edgar Allen Poe and has cool artwork all over. Also, pages of his work serve as wallpaper in the bathrooms and there's audio of someone reading his writing too. My husband and I just went to Poe's because Lemon bar was packed. We took a chance because it looked so cute. Great choice- we sat at the bar with Jeff bartending. He quickly welcomed us and they have a great beer selection- I had the Belgian which I am always on the lookout for- my husband had an IPA- so good. I had a bacon burger and hubby had a spicy chicken sandwich with fried shrimp on top. They were both delicious. I finished with the coffee beer slushie that was on special. I'm definitely a fan of Poe's. The wait is always reasonable and the hosts/hostesses tend to overestimate your wait time which is a pleasant surprise to be seated in 10 when they quoted half an hour - and the servers are all very nice. I wish I were better with their names so that I could namedrop them for the excellent service but I will update the next time I dine in because I'm great remembering faces! The food is ALWAYS consistent. No matter what you are getting, when you return and order it again, it is just as good as the last time. That can be challenging to find in restaurants so I give them that. I am a return orderer of the Tell-Tale Heart with chili cheese fries and a double whiskey ginger ale. Never breaking the bank and the consistency is always there. The sleeper burger is lick-the-plate good. Poe's Tavern is a great place for drinks and food. Although a bit pricey, the quality of their food justifies it. Outstanding service! The outdoor lights wouldn't turn on but our party still wanted to be seated outside, so the hostess brought a candle to our table for lighting. We were so appreciative and it certainly added to the ambiance. All of the food was delicious. We especially enjoyed the guacamole and queso. Came here on a Saturday around 1pm after being on the beach all morning. The place had a very casual atmosphere - pub feel / sports bar - which is just what we were looking for. They have a nice outdoor patio with fans and misters and large indoor area with the A/C turned up. We were greeted shortly by our server who quickly brought us our drinks. He asked if it was our first time here, explained the menu, and told us about the specials. We ordered and our food was brought out quickly. During the course of our meal, the server seemed a little absent as he only filled our drinks once and we couldn't find him for quite some time when we were ready for our check. I got the Hop Frog burger and my wife got the chicken quesadilla. I have to say, the fried onion straws were amazing and probably my favorite part of the burger. There wasn't a significant flavor to the rest of it and the one downside was I ordered the burger medium well, but it came medium rare. Not a deal breaker for me, but did create a different texture than I prefer. The french fries were also very good. More along the lines of shoestring fries and cooked to perfection. My wife said the quesadilla was also very good and it looked great from across the table with all the fixing of guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. Lastly, the mens bathroom was decorated with pages of Poe's books as wallpaper, which I thought was quite fun and felt worth mentioning. She went with her usual while I decided to try the fish tacos. My fish tacos were okay, I feel they should come with a small side. The hostess was very kind. Our waitress was nice, however, service was very slow. Also, the water tasty very funky. I thought it tasted like sand but my cousin thought it tasted like it went through bad pipes. You know, I have been planning to go to Poe's since I received the notice that Sticky Fingers was breaking their lease. I just never made it there, however my girls were out of town and my son wanted to try their burgers, so viola. Okay, my biggest issue was parking. This area of town is notorious for limited parking and finding a space did take some finesse. Seated quickly, started with Queso and Chips, which were delightful. Chose the cheese burger with their home made blue cheese and hand cut fries, both were delicious. My son had the Rue Morgue, a bun-less burger topped with a fried egg that he really loved. We skipped dessert, but they had a Key Lime pie that looked interesting. Okay, why not five stars? It started raining and they closed most of the open bay doors and a lady stood inside and smoked about 3 feet from me. When I politely asked, she put it out but lit another one five minutes later. Wow, was that was a delicious burger!! Just tried out Poe's for the first time and I was highly impressed. It was a family outing and we ate dinner inside, I have to say the inside area is pretty loud so it was hard to hear conversations with one another. However, the outside area was a lot quieter. We ordered the queso as an app and it was fire. Better then most Mexican restaurants I've been too. Our waitress was so cute and attentive! The service was great and we didn't have to wait at all to be seated as the restaurant is pretty big. I loved the unique atmosphere of the restaurant as well. I just got the gold burger as my main meal and it was to die for. Parking can be a little difficult to find in that area but they have a lot specific for Poe's customers. Full disclosure my daughter is a Poe fanatic (been to the home in Philly, grave in Baltimore and his alleged eateries there) so we decided on the significant detour to eat here. We were not disappointed. So fast forward and another road trip. This time from Savannah to miami and we again detoured off I-95. Yes the burgers are worth the extra hour tacked on. This time I had the grilled fish tacos. They were great. The group had the nachos; again awesome. The group consensus was that the burgers are to die for. All of which are named after Poe's work. Take in the bathrooms which are lined with his works and an audio recording reading his works. Don't linger too much! One last thing Poe's, ever coming down to South Florida? For an interesting and unique, literary based concept, I was quite shocked that this place was really more of a sports bar rather than a hip spot at the beaches. Nonetheless, I was excited to try their food there. I had heard so much about the burgers. I was impressed with how good the veggie burger was. Although, I may have been swayed because I topped the veggie burger with chili and a fried egg. The place was very full and quite loud. The lighting is low and the place has a pub feel to it . There is outside seating as well as an enclosed patio - the "in between". The noise level is moderate and even though they have high chairs for the tots, there are no changing tables in the restrooms. FOODISPHERE: The fries are cut in house and the meat is ground here as well. Even though this place is quant it delivers quality American pub food. The burgers are on point, though not outstanding, the fries and bread along with the fixings are excellent. This place isn't cheap but I still find it a good value. DRINKOVISION- AKA THE BAR This place can pour a full range of spirits but to me, this place stands out as a great place for a pint and of that- they have many to choose from. Went here with my husband recently, was pretty slow for a Monday but it took almost 20 minutes for us to be able to put an appetizer in. We ended up getting the cheese fries which were very good. We both ordered drinks, he got a peach lemonade ($8) and I got a poes punch ($10). For $18 for two drinks you would expect to taste a little bit of alcohol in them but neither of us could. Very weak drinks overall even though they did still taste good. I ordered the nachos for dinner and he got a burger. I didn't know the nachos with chili had beans in them which I do not like (granted I should have asked if it had beans). Our server was super nice and offered to change it out for grilled chicken and she was great. However when she brought it back we heard the kitchen yell about how it was an issue and they had to remake which kind of off put us.
