This was my first time trying this place and I came in with high expectations after doing my research. The restaurant itself looked clean, which was a good first impression. Unfortunately, the service completely ruined the experience. I placed my order online four hours in advance because I have a long drive back home to Julian and just wanted to pick it up and go. When I arrived, there was no greeting from staff, no clear pickup line, and no acknowledgment of customers waiting. The staff seemed to have tunnel vision, only focusing on what was directly in front of them while ignoring everyone else. After standing there for quite a while, I finally had to ask about my order. Instead of it being ready like it should have been, they hadn't even started making it. I ended up waiting over 30 minutes in line for something that was ordered hours earlier. What made it worse was when the mistake became obvious, no one apologized or acknowledged the inconvenience. The staff acted like it was no big deal and showed zero professionalism or accountability. I don't come into the city often, but when I do I like to try new places. Sadly, this experience was disappointing and the customer service was extremely poor. I would honestly say save your time and money and go somewhere that actually values their customers--especially in this economy. Time is money, and money is time. If a restaurant doesn't respect your time, they're definitely not going to respect your money. As for the food, it was very basic and lacked flavor. They were also very stingy with the sauce, which made the bowl even more dry and underwhelming. Overall, between the poor service, long wait despite ordering hours ahead, lack of accountability from staff, and mediocre food, this place was a big disappointment. I will not be coming back. The scallops were fresh, and I was especially impressed by the variety: unlimited sauces and sides, which you don't always find these days. I was a little disappointed they didn't have Masago or Tobiko, and I missed having seasoned sunomono-style cucumbers. Still, the quality and portion sizes more than made up for it. The only downside I have about this location is the parking. It's terrible. You'd be lucky if you find an open parking spot AND the people around that spot don't know how to park so I HIGHLY recommend ordering it online and just do a quick pick up if you're able to! We ordered the garlic shrimp and a large poke bowl. Garlic shrimp was battered but it was soggy .. it being fried you would think the shrimp would be cooked --- but it was still transparent . I ate a couple before taking the batter off- it looked raw. It was disappointing. I had a medium bowl with marinated tuna, seared tuna and salmon. It was so big it fed me for two meals! All the fish had a good texture and taste, their sauces to mix with were so good. Today I got a bowl with 2 scoops salmon, one scoop of spicy tuna. I don't like that Poke Chop charges extra for avocado AND krab. For the sauces I chose jalapeño wasabi & sweet sesame. I think I liked the sweet sesame but would choose something else than the jalapeño wasabi if I went back. I don't know what it was, but overall it wasn't that impressive as a whole, it didn't come together that well. Poke Chop is a solid cozy Poke restaurant tucked into the corner of Hillcrest. They have various poke options, great toppings, and decent portions. I saw this place as I was walking around Hillcrest and was recommended it by my eye doctor. This is very conveniently located given that I live in Hillcrest. Parking seems to be tight with a small lot shared by three or four restaurants. If not available consider street parking as well as public lots nearby. I walked in on a weekday around dinner time. There were a few people in line ahead of me and there was not much of a wait which was nice because I was starving at the time. Like most poke places, it is a step-by-step process where you pick the various things that you want inside of your bowl. I found that they had a lot of good options in terms of toppings, fish, and sides. In the end, I made my own custom bowl with tuna, salmon in various other toppings. I thought it was a solid bowl of poke. I enjoyed the portions I felt like for the price it was very reasonable. As for the fish, I thought the fish was decently fresh and enjoyable and that the sauces that were provided were tasty. It didn't have anything that was a shock factor however it was a very good Poke spot that I will be frequenting more often given that I live so close and how delicious it is. They do not skimp on the protein here My only con was that I think my bowl could've used more sauce.
