Make your own bowl and crab rangoon roll
    Jacki B.

Atarashi is a good, quick option for sushi, poke bowls, and bento boxes. They offer a large menu with a variety of options, as well as "make your own" items. I loved the flexibility and customization of the menu, but the food wasn't anything special. We tried a make your own bowl and the crab rangoon sushi roll. Neither were bad but neither were delicious, either.

When this place first opened I was thrilled to see a place to get poke bowls and a quick, casual sushi restaurant in the South Hills. Atarashi is like chipotle for sushi and poke bowls, so you can pick your own toppings and meats. I think the quality has gone downhill in the past year since the first time I had it. The portions also used to be bigger when the bowls came in the black plastic containers instead of the paper boxes they're using now. The sushi has A LOT of rice. I definitely wouldn't get the sushi again at all- if you're looking for quick sushi, run into the Giant Eagle down the hill, the quality is better. The cucumbers are long spears and aren't conducive to a poke bowl. The basic amount of protein isn't a lot, so I always opt to add more for additional charges. The chicken tempura was like a kids chicken tender- not tempura batter at all. Atarashi is now a swing and a miss.

Yummy poke bowl & lots of options!! Ordered through the yelp app and it was ready right on time. There is a shelf inside for mobile orders just like chipotle and Panera. I ordered the Build Your Own Poke Bowl and got raw ahi tuna with half white rice/ half salad blend as the base. I chose the cucumber wasabi dressing and it was fantastic!! If you like the zip that wasabi adds I definitely recommend that dressing! The bowl was big and the price wasn't bad for how much you get. They have lots of "build your own" options which is nice to customize what you order to your liking. They also have grilled chicken as a protein option for those who aren't super into sushi, which sets them apart from other sushi restaurants. It was really empty when I went but it has a similar atmosphere to chipotle and has little bar seats if you want to work or study. Definitely will be back!

I will start by saying the staff is always very friendly. My partner and I used to come here all the time but this recent time it seems things have changed in a bit so good way. We got sushi and poke bowls. The sushi rice was crunchy like the boiled minute rice. They cook the chicken in the teriyaki sauce which you would think would help it. Somehow it's dry. It was just overall disappointing.

This was quite a nice surprise! Didn't expect Pittsburgh to have its own sushi / bowl chain but it does. I got the Lucky Bowl that had rice, tuna, seaweed, avocado and crunchy rice bits. Delicious, fresh, flavorful - was very pleased with the quality and speed of service. The staff working were nice and the restaurant was clean. I would come here again and recommend it.

Like why am I obsessed with this place!! Basically a chipotle style sushi place. What more could I want in life?? They have such cool rolls to choose from on their menu. I loved the eye of the tiger! You can also build your own rolls or bowls. They make it right in front of you and their food is really fresh and clean. Everyone working was seriously soo nice. I went three times last week and I can't stop!

Fresh made to order sushi with great options. So far 4 tries and 4 thumbs up!

I've been generally impressed by the quality of the sushi. We ordered takeout this time, and everything was extremely well packaged and presented. In terms of the food, we focussed on fairly standard maki rolls: a spicy salmon roll and a spicy California roll. Both were very nicely done. We also tried the veg farm roll, and that was a nice vegetable forward option. Not life changing, but nicely done. We also opted for a vegetable poke bowl, and that was also good. Basically the same combination of vegetables as the veg farm roll, but in a bowl format. The bowl was good, but it was lacking some sort of sauce or glaze that might have pulled things together. It was easy enough to toss on some condiments of our own, but the bowl could have been better. Overall, I this is my favorite sushi destination in Squirrel Hill. It's very clear that the owners are invested in turning out a high quality experience, and that's exactly the type of business I like to support.

Their selection of appetizers were great, and the quality of each was stellar. We attempted to try quite a few of them, and still have many we want to try. In our group, the tofu with an amazing dashi broth, the crab puffs, "sexy jalepenos", tempura kani, and the gyoza were the standouts. As I stated, though...everything we had was awesome. We all ordered a different ramen, and then shared. They were all phenomenal. The steak teriyaki was also great. Sushi wise, we didn't get to try as many as we had hoped. We were too busy reordering the appetizers. We did try the Crazy Mango roll, and ended up reordering that because it was so good. My kids were with me, and they love all things Mango, and this was phenomenal. For dessert, we had a few orders (and reorders!) of the fried bananas. Overall, I cannot speak higher of our experience. It is very clean, well kept up on, and the service was phenomenal. Quality wise, you can tell how much effort they put into the place purely on their presentation. I had to remark many times about how utterly beautiful some of their dishes were. This was not like our other AYCE experiences where they just rush food out to you. They actually put effort into their craft here, and it is quite obvious. We will definitely be back, and look forward to trying new things that we didn't get to before!

My usual order is the chicken katsu bento box, which comes with a good portion of crunchy sliced chicken katsu, rice, two dumplings, a California roll, and miso soup. It feels like a solid, filling meal with enough variety to make it satisfying. The only downside with my most recent takeout order was the sauce placed in the middle of the container. I'm not sure exactly what it was, and after tasting it, it wasn't really for me. Because of the layout of the takeout container, some of it spilled into the rice and rolls. Next time, I'd probably ask for that sauce on the side in a separate container.

The energy is good vibes only and the most important rule is no complaints. It is only joy and a shared experience of trying things you wouldn't normally splurge on. If you break the rule, you don't get invited back! On this particular night, I was 2 months postpartum and naturally ready to eat and drink all things sinful during pregnancy. Having 2 kids at home and a dutiful dad to watch them, I did not do the responsible thing, make a reservation weeks in advance. I highly recommend that you do this for this high end and highly sought sushi experience. I managed to get lucky and snag my group a 4:00 pm table for 4. I'm sure what you are thinking is that is incredibly too early to eat, but look at it this way - 2 of us have small children and truthfully eating fancy food while our husbands put the kids to bed and making it home just in time to snuggle up and watch tv ended up being absolutely perfect. First, the view is insane. You are perched atop a mountain overlooking 3 rivers converging. It's gorgeous. You will take a picture. Second, the service is outstanding. I've actually been twice this year just to confirm my first experience wasn't a fluke. Extremely attentive staff who make you believe they want you to have the best culinary experience possible, maybe they actually do! We ordered nearly everything on the menu. My favorite dish is the yellowtail jalapeno. It is unreal good. I also tried uni, which was very unique. Probably not something I need to indulge in every time, but still very cool. Our group enjoyed sharing all of our plates with each other. I left feeling so satisfied. It is an understatement to say that Otaru is excellent. We talked about this place for months afterward, with longing. It is definitely one of the best places to take guests from out of town to show them the finer side of Pittsburgh. It was shockingly not busy until about 630pm and they open at 4. There is no valet, just street parking. They provided complimentary edamame which had a great little spicy kick. I ordered the sour, the yuzu gave it a nice fresh citrus taste. My husband had a scotch and Coke. We decided to order the experience which began with a tartar (salmon, tuna and yellowtail on a bed of tuna). Amazing. We then had a two piece sashimi with jalapeño and crispy potato in a sauce that was similar to Italian dressing. This was our favorite of the entire night. Next was a shrimp tasting. It had shaved cucumber and seaweed in a light brown sauce, perhaps a mirin. It was okay, like a cold miso. We then had a dish I had only seen videos of called Chawanmushi. It was like an eggy flan served hot. My husband was not a fan but I was. Then was the first nigiri which the bartender was kind enough to split for us. It included 4 light pieces of sushi. After that there was a cold infused tomato palate cleanser and the second nigiri with "darker" fish. It was all delicious. After that was a fatty tuna hand roll (like a sushi taco) which was amazing as well. And last for the savory items, a soft shell crab which was very, very good. The yellow sauce tasted like the yellow of a potato salad with tastes that mimicked mayo, mustard and pickles. We ordered another round of drinks and I had a dirty martini which they called The New 32. The last item is the red bean dessert but we opted to order more food and had the Treasure Box ($78) which had 9 different sashimis. There were a few repeats from the experience portion but we were happy to have the first sashimi item again. And last, we had the red bean dessert as well as a complimentary tiramisu dessert for the husband's birthday. The bill was just over $300 which was expected for the location, amount of food and overall quality and experience.
