My friend was craving poke and we wanted something around this area. Found this pretty new (I'm sorry if it's actually not too new but it's pretty new to us) place that had good ratings plus saw the flower wall with their name on it so we chose here (aesthetics wise, it's gorgeous). My friend got there first so she ordered and took a seat. The seats were decent with sushi pillows which I thought were super cute. The only downside to here was that there wasn't a bathroom so I quickly ordered and ran to the nearest starbucks to use their bathroom. Thankfully, they didn't say anything much when I came back in with a starbucks cup (because I know some places don't allow you to bring drinks from other places). So the ordering process was pretty painless (because the girl taking care of me was so patient with me. THANK YOU for tolerating my slowness on deciding what to eat!!). She showed me where to look to see what everything was (instead of bobbing my head up and down like an idiot...). But I ended up making my own pokebowl with zucchini noodles, big eye tuna and salmon. For the toppings, I opted for cucumber, sesame seasoning, mango, edamame, corn and avocado (extra $1). I chose what is a very classic sauce to me (PONZU FTW). And lastly, I asked for some scallion, toasted rice puffs and onion chips. To start, the place is great for a quick bite, whether you want to dine in or take it out. I met the owner and he's very friendly and had plenty of recommendations about drinks and bowls. Keep in mind, my portion was a tasting version-their normal sizes are much larger. The concept is similar to chipotle, make your own bowl or you can choose one of their options. Their preparation differs from most poke in that they try to keep the fish fresh and sans sauces so you can really taste the fish. If you want it saucier, ask! Salmon bowl: this was yummy! The Scottish salmon tasted fresh and all the components worked well. The only thing I would omit is the pineapple as I didn't think the sweetness complemented well. Tuna bowl: the tuna tasted a bit flavorless to me (as mine didn't have much sauce, but you could add more). I wasn't a fan of the zucchini noodles simply because they taste bland without extra sauce. I'd been dying to dry a sushi donut for the longest time, but place down the street (Poketeria) only has sushi donuts during weekdays and I rarely get to go down to the city on weekdays. Thankfully, PokeRice offers them all week long! I was the only one of a bunch of patrons in the restaurant ordering the sushi donut, but everyone enjoyed watching the creation process! One lady even stated that she had to be back to try it because it looked so cool. The fish was surprisingly fresh and the presentation was very thoughtful. The spicy tuna wrapped in the donut and the spicy sauce drizzled over the sushi rice was a little overwhelming in my opinion. I would recommend asking for the spicy sauce on the side so you can choose to use as little or as much as you want. If you dine in, they will place the donut on two pieces of nori and recommend that you eat the donut with the nori - I personally found the nori soggy and difficult to chew, but I guess it makes each bite seem more sushi-like. Their protein scoops are on the smaller side if you're looking for heavy protein. I've known for a while that Poke Rice existed. But I'm a huge fan of Poke Bowl on Canal, so I've never tried Poke Rice. This is a MEALPAL review, so proceed with caution! I arrived in between my pick up time and they made my poke bowl fresh. I like that they didn't just have a bunch sitting in a corner waiting to be picked up. PokeRice is a quaint poke stop a few blocks from NYU. Housing many ingredients, PokeRice made my first experience a really impressionable one! I ordered (from memory): white rice, salmon, edamame, cucumber, corn, wakame seaweed, scallion, bonito flakes, and wasabi yuzu sauce. I ordered all the things I liked. Because I didn't know what sauce to choose, the person asked if I liked salty, spicy, sweet, or sour. I went with "no sweet flavors" and got wasabi yuzu. It's not wasabi-ish at all, it's actually a bit salty and sour. Super good! I think you're able to get two sauces, but I'd check again. The salmon was really good. As a California native, I've been dying for pacific salmon. Atlantan salmon just doesn't taste the same. HOWEVER! PokeRice has really good salmon! I recommend this protein dish to everyone! They also give out a free miso soup with your order which is really nice. My only complaint about this place is that it's a bit expensive for a poke place. Oh my word. I am or will become obsessed with this place. I attended a Yelp event here about a month ago and vowed to return. To be honest, I'm new to the Poke world and realize it is the latest trend going so I don't have a basis of comparison with other Poke eateries. But when I visited PokeRice, I knew this establishment would be a keeper. It is small but immaculate, with almost a Zen-like feel to it. Keep in mind there aren't an abundance of seats so I imagine it can get quite crowded during peak hours. The menu offered build your own or an already designed poke bowl selections. I decided to create my own and being new to this, there were many steps. I chose zucchini noodles (can you say yum without the carbs? Yes!) as my base and 2 protein options instead of 3. My selections were spicy tuna and salmon. Then on to the toppings--some of mine were shredded carrots, beets, red onion, radish, hijiki, mango and more. Then sauce followed by mix ins. I chose pickled ginger, seaweed salad, jalapeno pepper and of course more. I felt like a glutton, haha. Only avocado and hard boiled egg were extra in price. The final step was a crunch and there were several options. I decided on the rice pop crunch (fully loaded bowl was about $12.95). When the bowl was completed, it looked too pretty to eat as it was so colorful. The taste and combination of flavors were outstanding and the seafood was ocean fresh. Once I finished, I was satisfied because it was very filling. They carry refrigerated beverages as well as select beer and cold/hot sake. I was speechless to find out the cold sake was $12 ( didn't order it). A Yelp check in or their daily happy hour specials included a free miso soup with any poke bowl. There are lots of places to get poke bowls in the town but PokeRice is my go-to now. It's close to our school, quite affordable and always keeps the food fresh. There's space for around 10 people. You can choose to take out or dine in. They would give you miso soup for free if you dine in. These are what I order almost every time: corn, edamame, ginger, seaweed and crunches (wonton chips, garlic chips, sesame seeds). Crunches are the highlights. For protein, I usually get salmon and spicy tuna. For the base, I have tried rice and zucchini noodles. I really liked the zucchini noodles here - it is quite refreshing and healthy! Keep in mind though, it can taste bland sometimes. I would recommend adding more sauce into your bowl if you want to try zucchini noodles. read more

After a recent trip to California, I've been jonesing for poke. So I'm checking out the places here in New York. Poke is basically raw fish (or cooked if you prefer) on salad or rice with a butt load of toppings and your choice of sauces. You can choose a preselected salad from the menu or make your own. I've been to this place twice so far--had the spicy tuna and the salmon with my choice of all the toppings. The service has been good. The fish and ingredients have been fresh. The sparkling clean, beautiful, brightly-lit space is perfect for a casual sit-down lunch, and not too mobbed for summer, weekday lunches. (No NYU schmobs, yet.) I have literally sampled almost every poke-serving establishment on the island of Manhattan, and many in the outer boroughs as well. (For science, y'know.) The fish at Poke Rice are pristine and.... *drumroll*... they offer yellowtail!!! Plain, unadulterated yellowtail, perfectly fresh, with no dressings or mix-ins to muddy the flavor (or obscure less-than-fresh notes). That is bold. Mix-ins or toppings (or whatever they call the stuff you put on top of your protein and base layers) are also of very high quality. Mangos are ripe, soft and sweet; pico de gallo is made with good, ripe tomatoes; kani and seaweed salads are well balanced. The sesame dressing is fabulous. Those beautiful, golden lotus chips retain their crunch surprisingly well. They recycle. Every member of the staff I've encountered has been friendly, fast and affirmatively helpful (not just reluctantly helpful, which is the most I expect from a NYC fast-casual restaurant). Prices are astonishingly good for the quality of ingredients, the excellent free miso soup, the nice digs, and the high-rent neighborhood. (The one and ONLY thing I can think of that would improve the restaurant: It would be so nice if customers could bring in reusable bowls of our own to use. It would save the restaurant money -- they wouldn't need to buy as many plastic containers -- and it would be better for the environment. This place is damn good. PokeRice has to be one of my top choices for a quick and nutritious meal. The fish and other seafood options are fresh and succulent. Each bite I took felt like I was cleansing my body and soul from the terrible hangover I was having. The best thing about the place besides the stellar quality of food and smiles of their employees is the option to create my own meal. The versality of this place is amazing. I had the yellowtail poke bowl on my most recent visit here and overall, I thought it was pretty decent. This is the only poke places that I know of that offers toppings such as pico de gallo, corn, daikon and sauces such as Szechuan hot oil. Brownie points to PokeRice for being innovative and trying out different options. In my honest opinion, I thought that the yellowtail fish could've been a little fresher. There was a slight fishy aftertaste after I ate the yellowtail indicating that the fish they use isn't exactly the most fresh. It's no biggie though, as long as I don't get sick from eating it. The shredded nori also had a tad bit of a earthy aftertaste, but it was nothing too overwhelming. There were also a few pieces of kale in the yellowtail poke bowl which made the bowl seem like a salad bowl. Overall, I pretty much enjoyed my first experience at PokeRice. Decided to try this place for delivery given the reviews. I made a custom bowl with 3 proteins. I found the fish to be really fresh, but found that was the best part of the bowl. I didn't like the rice at all. It was cold and a bit hard. Wished that there was more sauce and flavor mixed into the bowl. Price-wise, it was decent. Still getting into poke as I still get overwhelmed with raw sushi when it's not super fresh and has that fishy taste. I really enjoyed this place even though the worker probably thought I was crazy for not picking many sides since I'm overly picky as is and trying to get familiarized with what I like/don't like so I stick to my safest options. I really enjoyed all the toppings they have here, especially the fried lotus chips. Their mango was also really sweet and refreshing to have in the bowl I created (and I originally thought it may be a bit weird for it to go with the spicy mayo I had). The salmon/tuna was really good and the portions are huge. From other poke menus that I have seen, I feel like this place offers a variety of things and definitely has won me over. Lots of toppings to choose from! I got the three protein make your own poke bowl with half lettuce and half white rice. Wish they gave a little more fish per scoop, the portion was a bit on the small end. But they have lots of toppings/add ons to choose from. My only complaint would be that the rice was hard and dry. It kind of ruined the bowl for me. I started scooping out the rice midway. Otherwise everything tasted good, but the rice needs improvement. read more

Came here today as I'm trying out all the poke places that have popped up by me. PokeRice is much nicer looking than other similar restaurants if nothing else; there is also a decent place to sit down despite their fast casual format, in case you don't want to each lunch at your desk. Ordering was very well laid out. The cashier was very friendly, and even offered a free bowl of miso soup since she could tell it was my first time here. Price for bowls was about $12 which is standard for poke places. I got the Spicy Tuna Poke and was on my way. The spicy tuna was cut up in tiny pieces so that it could fit into sushi. This is very different texturally than the larger chunks you typically find with poke. I found the portion to be on the small side with a bit of filler as well. The red chili did make the dish actually spicy though on the bright side, and the topics in general (ie: masago, sheered nori, onion chips) were plentiful and bolstered the dish well. I think it's fair to say that the sides were better than the actual fish. The miso soup was good as well. Would come again if I was nearby. Issue is the number of poke places that are popping up.
