POKI ONE N HALF @ SAN MARCOS Parking is available right out front. The restaurant is located in a plaza shared with other businesses, but my friends and I didn't have any trouble finding parking. We came here after a long day of shopping and were really excited to grab some poke. I've had this chain before, there's even a location at SDSU where I attend school, so I already knew how the ordering process worked. We ordered four bowls, all fully customized. I love that you can choose your toppings almost buffet-style, although some do come at an additional cost. One thing I really appreciate about Poke One & Half is that they offer free avocado, which most poke places don't. I got greens and brown rice with salmon, and initially, everything tasted great as usual. Unfortunately, the next day I got food poisoning. I'm fairly certain it was from the salmon, it looked brown and slimy, but I didn't think too much of it at the time since the place seemed busy and the fish appeared freshly cut. I ended up throwing up the next day, so personally, I wouldn't return to this specific location. That said, every other Poke One & Half location I've been to has been great and has never caused any stomach issues. The girl at the counter seems irritated, not so much as a smile or eye contact. The quality of the fish is mediocre. And why is everything so sweet?? Got a regular poke bowl with Salmon and Tuna and a couple of the spicy sauces. The size of the bowl and amount of fish was on par with other places I've been, but the price was a couple dollars more. That may be because they don't charge extra for avocado, but if you don't add it then you're just paying more. Overall, there wasn't much taste and it wasn't even a little spicy, so much so that I went back and got some extra chili oil and it still wasn't spicy. But now living in north county I go to this location and it does not disappoint. Portions are generous (the photo is a small bowl), avacado was green and fresh, they don't charge you extra for an additional topping or count krab meat as a protein which I love. With a 20% tip, my bowl was $21. I'm rating it 4 stars because the salmon didn't taste as fresh as I've had at other places and I was briefly hit with a pretty fishy smell when I first walked in. Staff was friendly and they have the nicer more expensive ginger -- none of that 99 cent crap. They were out of a few things I asked for, but there was still so much choice it didn't matter. I ordered a half brown rice half salad bowl with all the toping's they had along with tuna and salmon. The bowl was huge and I ate it for dinner and again for lunch the next day! While poke restaurants aren't new to the area, a solid contender is. Service: I happened to visit when they weren't busy. Super friendly staff. They all informed me they were trained at the Kearny Mesa locations and any one who knows how busy these get during the lunch rush hour knows if you can survive the chaos then you can handle a rush anywhere. A regular bowl with 3 kinds of fish is 14.95 Drinks: got me a fountain drink... FYI, Pepsi products for those who care. Food: pretty legit and super packed in my bowl. It tastes like their sister locations. While the fish didn't look the most appetizing at first (the cuts looked a smidge rough), those are general grand opening issues that can be hammered out. I got salmon, tuna, and albacore mixed with mild Poki sauce and spicy Mayo. Their spicy Mayo isn't spicy folks (for those concerned)... it has a subtle heat. Mixed together makes for a delicious fish. The rice doesn't feel hard or grainy like it was cooked way earlier and added later in the day. For toppings, I got cucumbers, edamame, furikake and spicy Mayo drizzled on the top. Overall rating: 4.5. It's solidly good+. Definitely above average.
