I'm just North of Los Angeles, hired Polar Bear Auto for a Pre Purchase Inspection regarding a 2010 Dodge Ram purchase in Sacramento. * Front and Rear Rotors were are at 1mm safety threshold / by law need to be replaced. * Rack and pinion leaking - needed replacement. * CV boots torn and leaking both sides - needed to be replaced. * Inner tie rod has play- needs replacement * Left front strut leaking - needs to be replaced. * Exhaust leak - Manifold gasket?? They were great. Very thorough and basically saved my @$$... The Dealer, close by, told me again and again, the truck was tip top. After I bought a new/used car, the AC blew hot air sometimes, cold air intermittently. My local mechanic tried but admitted he couldn't diagnose the problem. Then I remembered Polar Bear Auto specialized in AC repairs. Kevin B treated me very well, even shuttled me home while car was in the shop. First they fixed the freon and dryer leaks and we thought that solved the problem. But It took two more trips back because the hot air problem was intermittent and drove me crazy. But Kevin and his team were very patient with me and my car. They eventually found the problem, a broken wiring harness socket on the AC compressor that was bouncing around causing the intermittent problems. Kevin had it fixed at no extra charge. The AC has run several weeks now consistently cold. I was very pleased with Kevin and his team's service. I am now enjoying driving my new/used car this summer. I called to get an estimate on how much it'll be to recharge my 2014 Honda accord a/c that has never been recharged. They said they have to do an automatic $200+ diagnostic regardless plus whatever the labor and fees are to resolve the issue. I took it in, received a text that it would be $378 total which included diagnostic, changing air and cabin filter, plus labor. I agreed, paid, and left. After less than a week, A/c wasn't blowing cold air. I took it back in and they refunded me my entire payment plus $25 for the uber rides to get there. I was so unhappy. Took it to my original mechanic who I should've taken it to, and he said simple fix, just recharging the refrigerant like I knew. Complete rip off. I was told by 2 separate mechanics that I know; that they used to refer their ac issue clients here, and that they used to get custom made ac units made here, however, this was some 20+ years ago. $250 for diagnostic fee . They wanted $1500 something to change a compressor , receiver dryer, orifice tube, o rings and vacuum system and refill. Price for parts online was around $300. Complete waste of our time, this will be the last thing I take over here. More reasonable prices other places . My dad paid thousands of dollars for air conditioning repairs and/or replacement. every 1-2 years over a period of six years. Eaxh time the air conditioning was replaced (4x), the system would fail within 1-2 years. The warranty for the system was always expired. One would expect a system to last a little longer. Good service is not cheap and Cheap service is not good . Polar Bear Auto care specializes in automotive air conditioning. My regular shop was not able to find my Freon leak but suspected the evaporator coil behind the dashboard and referred me to Polar Bear Auto care. Leak was found in the A/C compressor shaft seal. I had did my homework already in case of the compressor needing replacement and everyone recommended condenser and dryer replacement when replacing a compressor. There may be metal particulates in the system which is why all major components associated with the system need replacing. It was obvious my seal failed, recently when engaging the compressor I had noticed a rattle in the compressor which leads me to believe the bearings had failed causing the seal to fail . Failed bearings usually leave metal particulates. Polar bear offers a 2 year 24k mile warranty as long as you go with recommended parts and repairs and I understand the concept. Do it right or don't do it at all. I now have a brand new air conditioning system in my 2013 Toyota Camry. And a 2 year 24k warranty . FYI: I did have Toyota dealer quote this job and they were 629.79 dollars more, plus they would have had to charge the diagnose fee also. Thank you Austin and crew !!!! Thumbs up!!!! Polar bear was highly recommended by numerous people. My experience leaves a lot to be desired. Our 2019 Expedition was not cooling very well. Polar's standard inspection cost a few hundred dollars and I was ok with that. Their diagnosis was we needed a new compressor and new evaporator in the rear at greater than $3,000. I said no thank you. Took it to another highly rated AC shop and all we needed was a top off of refrigerant. Beware, this business will rip you off. read more

I went in to diagnose a problem with my AC. The lady over the phone said it would cost ~$110 for the diagnosis. I get there and they slap on an additional $100 fee to remove the refrigerant which we didn't discuss over the phone. It was annoying but I agreed to pay as it was 100+F that week and needed my AC fixed. They call and say they think it's the compressor clutch as they can't see any rubber around the clutch and that "it was so bad we didn't even do the full inspection" or something along those lines. They quoted me $1900 including the diagnostic and said they would need to replace several other components that may have been "contaminated by particles". I asked if they could only replace the part they suspected was the cause of the failure and they said something about how they don't do that because of their "36000 mile warranty". I could tell they were trying to hustle me since there was a heat wave and they figured I was a sucker. Went to AutoNation and they quoted me HALF to fix it. My AC works great and their quote was only for $900, from a big box store... 2 stars because they at least completed the inspection within a day. So I was reccomend this place from another business who didn't look at add on air conditioners. I just bought a 1995 Dodge Ram Van and decided to convert it into an RV. So as I'm waiting for my appointment day I start the conversion. Just a bedframe and playarea for the kids. I go to my appointment today and talk to this kind man (didn't get his name). He looks at my car to see if they can help. He gets worried about the conversion being in the way, so I said it's just a bunch of unscrewing. I can move things around no big deal. So he gets someone else, Kevin. (He answered the phone while I was waiting so I know his name) So Kevin comes to examine the van and immediately tells me in a very aggressive manner "We can't help you" "My guys won't crawl in that back area" "They need to be able to move around" and he walks away! How Rude! Not a customer service bone found. I started to cry (just had a baby so extra sensitive) because that was a very unnecessary approach, I don't care how old, young, or gender of the customer. I would have been fine if he would have talked to me not at me. Kevin, I would not have a negative review if you were a little kinder. Maybe something like "So, my guys can't get back there to examine the air ducts because the wood piece, if you can remove it to make it more accessible maybe my guys can take a look." We call to get our questions asked and once they find out we've "worked on" our car ourselves, they said they want no parts in touching our vehicle. They said they don't like touching a car that's been worked on by someone else. I have a 1970 Cadillac Deville, I walked in and asked about restoring my AC or installing a after market system. Because I was referred by a friend who said they installed a vintage air system/plus install in his car 3k. These guys quoted me 7k with a straight face. I brought my old Land Rover here to get the no-longer-functioning air conditioner checked out and repaired. No big surprise, the truck is 25 years old, and the compressor was shot. If you know about air conditioning systems, the right way to repair them is to rebuild the whole system, meaning a new compressor, receiver/dryer, seals, removal of the old refrigerant if any remains, and a flush of the system. This is what I expected to hear and exactly what Polar Bear quoted to do the job properly. They installed the exact same Denso compressor that was in my truck originally. To save a little bit of money and prolong the life of the rebuild, I removed the grille to give access to parts of the cooling system, and replaced the electric condenser fans myself. A pile of money later and I had snowflakes blowing out of my dash vents when it was 110 degrees outside. Fast forward a year, and all of a sudden my cold air was no longer cold! With visions of another big bill in my head, I called Polar Bear again. With no questions asked, I was told I could drop off the truck the next business day, which I did. The same day, I received a text notifying me that they had checked the system and found a defective seal in the compressor, and they had ordered a replacement under warranty. One day later I received a call to pick up my truck. They replaced the compressor and recharged the system with new oil and refrigerant. I paid $0. The shop will recoup the cost of the compressor under the manufacturer's warranty, but I was honestly shocked not to be charged for labor and refrigerant. That is a pretty fantastic business practice, and you can bet I'll bring any future AC repairs here. It's nobody's fault that the compressor failed, anyone who is into cars as a hobby knows that the quality of replacement parts for older vehicles is very spotty these days, even when you buy the name brand. The fact that Polar Bear stood up and took care of the issue at no cost to me is really impressive. read more

Do not take your vehicle here. I brought my truck in for a full AC repair in November of last year and I moved away from Sacramento. It was under a NAPA warranty however they did not put NAPA parts in it. When my compressor broke I took it to a NAPA shop in my area and thankfully NAPA is covering the parts however the numbers on the parts are not congruent so there has been a ridiculous amount of back and forth. I have now taken it to this shop four times because of this. They are doing their job correctly and communicating clearly, Polar destroyed the project from the start. The allegedly crushed hoses and lines that go into the compressor in a manner that both destroyed the lines and my technician is also surprise it even held freon in the AC. Not to mention this job was ridiculously over priced! read more

I do not think I will return my vehicle because their mechanic broke the fan shroud when replacing my alternator and did not say anything about it. I discovered it the following day when I went I opened my hood.I brought it back that same day. The sales person recommended gluing the shroud back together. I instead wanted it replaced. They replaced it the next day. 1. They should have replaced it when they first broke it. 2. I should have inspected their work when I first went to pick up my vehicle. 3. They should have never offered to glue the shroud. That makes me question their integrity. Do they cut corners when doing work? I'm disappointed! read more

In looking online I saw that $600 +/- was more common. On the advice of a friend I took it to Carson Automotive Repair. The repair was $626. Normally, I would avoid anything with "bear" or that associates with cold weather BUT, I came here to redeem my $15 oil change groupon. Staff was friendly, efficient and I was out in about 30 minutes. There were tons of other people there redeeming groupons as well. The front desk guy even told me that my car is in pristine condition and that I could do oil changes every 5k instead of 3k. I knew that... but honesty in automotive care seems few and far between these days. The waiting room looks like someones living room in a suburban home. My people watching entertainment included two girls watching Thai pop videos (without headphones) on their iphones, a breast feeding mother, and a hipster who was talking about spirituality vs organized religion. Polar Bear installed a new air conditioning unit in my '95 Chevy cargo van. They had to deal with the kind of issues you would have with a 20+ year old vehicle like aging parts to work around, dirt and grease everywhere and of course an extremely odd and tight area to work. It took them a little longer to finish the job and I already understood why. They also did some extra work, which they declined payment on. With all the extra time and work they put in, they stood by their original estimate and did not try to upsell. Most shops I've been to always try to add more work. They also gave me a list of items they found that I might want to work on in the future to keep my van running longer. I have been looking at this shop for years had the opportunity yesterday to have them fix a hose on my 62 impala the older man at the counter was actually pretty rude when he called me back to let me know what was going on with my car basically hung up on me and told me I'll get you your numbers I was asking questions so I could understand what was happening I was expecting a phone call back then I get a text I asked a couple more questions no answers I go to pick my car up which they did repair the AC hose and charged my AC system I get three blocks from the shop and my car starts pouring antifreeze when they replaced The AC hose they didn't pay attention and pushed the heater hose into the fan belt which rubbed a hole and left me stranded I've never text shop back-and-forth it's always been phone calls but I went ahead and sent a picture of what happened to one of the numbers that was texting me no response so I was left on the side of the road due to their negligence and not even A response hey we're sorry or will pay for the cost of the hose and coolant nothing. This morning again the same person I sent the picture to let them know thank you for leaving me broke down on the side of the road after leaving the shop no response what I'm seeing from the shop is they don't like to be questioned they just want to take your money they just want you to say yes repair it does not matter if you understand what they're talking about. I came here because I was told they could replace the evap in my car. I was having trouble finding any other place to do it other than the dealership because of how new the car is. The dealership was trying to charge me $1500 to do the repairs and I thought that was outrageous considering the part itself was only $140. So I brought it to polar bear and they tried to charge me $3000 to do the same job that the dealership would do for $1500 so that math didn't add up. Also they charged me $300 for a diagnosis whenever I told them I didn't even need a diagnosis in the first place Honda already charged me $400 for the inspection I had the paper and everything from Honda saying what was wrong but they insisted on not being willing to do any repairs unless they did the diagnosis themselves. My car starting to squeal upon startup and I called to make an appt to get it diagnosed. I took it in and they discovered the water pump was the issue due to the belts. When I asked about the costs they said an hour's labor charge to check it out and then they would let me know. When I picked it up the cost was zero because the water pump had been replaced in the previous 90k tune-up and that was less than 2 years so it was under warranty. Terrible customer service. Just got off the phone with one of the workers here and was greeted with an attitude. I called just to see if I can get a quote on a basic AC recharge for my car and again, the worker gave me an attitude saying he doesn't do just the recharge. He then says I have a leak some where and he needs to diagnose it first. I then told him that I may have caused my AC to leak out since I tried to do a DIY AC recharge myself and failed. He then asked me with another attitude "well why did you do the recharge yourself?!" With obvious reasons? It's 100 degrees out and my AC can't keep up with the heat so I figured I'd do it myself. Won't be surprised this business isn't making money due to the negative attitude the worker gave me. I hung up frustrated and still didn't manage to get a simple quote over the phone. OK , I called this company I told them about my problem they told me to bring it in then I made an appointment because they only do appointments so I had to wait days for my appointment I drop it off at 9:40 AM I call at 450 pm. They Advised me that they haven't even looked at my car haven't even touched it its still parked right where I left it . now I took it Uber home and back from there. I needed my car the next day I just can't leave it for two full days. Total waste of time.
