Quality has gone down while prices have gone up. Polito Bakery had been my go-to local bakery for many years. I try to support local businesses over retail chains, but I believe the quality of their food has declined since the pandemic while their prices have risen significantly. Today is the first time I felt uncomfortable after eating one of their apple turnovers. It was large but over fried, tasting more like a treat you would find at a carnival food truck rather than a reputable local bakery. The ambiance has always been quaint. When I came here to purchase a cookie gift basket for a recent holiday, however, it was half the size from previous years and double the price. I'm also not pleased that you can't use a credit card unless you're making a $10 purchase, and they still charge a fee unless you pay cash. With the high prices they're now charging, over $20 for a pound of butter cookies, management would be wise to ensure their baked goods are cooked to perfection rather than expediently to fill up the display case. Not happy with this recent visit. I may return, but only in a pinch. read more

Today, I went this bakery for the second time to try different parties. This time, we tried their eclair, the strawberry with custard cream puff pastry, and our favorite cannoli. Their cannoli is great, the cannoli cream taste amazing and we love it! On the other hand, their whipped cream eclair tasted a little different than I expected. Maybe because I am not used the Italian whipped cream. It tasted more sugary than a regular whipped cream. But still good. The strawberry custard cream puff pastry was good. Though, our favorite is still cannoli :) both the regular cannoli and chocolate covered cannoli are good! We'll come back to try other pastries :) read more

came here on a Sunday mid day, not busy at all. parking was right in front. there is a 3% if you pay with credit card and a $10 min. My son was able to pick all the stuff he wanted and I got a couple of cannoli to go. Overall a pleasant experience. I pass by this area all the time on my way to work but the hours just never line up for me. Great flavor in all the pastries. Not too sweet and still taste great the next day. Will come back for the other stuff as they have so many pastries. read more

I've been to Polito many times before and have always had a great experience. They have a huge selection of pastries and cookies, but the rainbow cookies and St. Joseph's cakes are definitely my favorites. Their cakes are great as well! They also have great pizza dough that's perfect for a fun date night making your own pizza at home. You really can't go wrong with anything while you're there. I also can't say enough about the staff. Every time I go in, they're super nice and helpful. I've been reading a lot of negative reviews of Polito and I'm not sure why there are so many. Very disappointed. I picked up our holiday pastries and opened the box to a smashed up mess. Do you want them in the same box the girl behind the counter asked?! Honey if they don't fit nicely into the box then box them up properly! That is your job to know this. This is for Christmas for crying out loud why would you throw peoples pastries into a box like this, upside down and sideways?! The girls behind the counter were pretty rude as well. We should've left when we heard the girl with the glasses snap on the elderly couple in front of us. I've driven by Polito Bakery so many times; each time, commenting that I wanted to check out this bakery. I finally got a chance this past weekend! Small, but nice and clean bakery. Lots and lots of different types of cookies by the pound on display; some cakes and pastries; some fresh bread. All pretty basic bakery goods. Nothing really wow'd me, so I ended up getting a plain cheesecake and one large cannoli. The large cannoli ($4) was pretty good; nice crisp shell (albeit a little bit greasy). Good amount of cannoli filling. Definite not the best cannoli I've had but good. Plain cheesecake ($15) was creamy and surprisingly very citrusy. I've never had a citrusy cheesecake before (considering that it was a plain cheesecake w. no fruit topping). But I liked it! Again, not the best cheesecake I've had but good. All in all, I wasn't wow'd but it's decent enough. Prices are more reasonable than some of the neighborhood's high end bakeries, but then again, this is not a high end bakery. Friendly service. This place has really gone down hill, and it's quite disappointing to my childhood. I grew up in the Herricks area, and my aunt grew up around the block from Polito, so we spent many years frequenting this bakery. In fact, whenever my cousins would come visit NY (they moved away many years ago), we would always go to Polito. In short, this place used to be one of the great bakeries in the area, full of fresh bread, cookies, pastries, cakes, and customer service. Used to is unfortunately the key phrase here. Since I also moved out of the area several years back, it's been at least 5 years since I've been to Polito, and I found myself with the opportunity to pick up some fresh bread and assorted Italian cookies for a Saturday evening meal. I noticed the store hours were a bit longer than I remembered, which was a plus, so we made it in time to pick up what we needed. When we returned home, we immediately opened up the French bread and began to dig in. The bread was probably the best part of the experience. It wasn't quite as fresh or aromatic as we expected, so we decided it wouldn't be worth going back since we can visit Roma Ray's (an AMAZING bread factory I've reviewed before) with a much shorter drive. Still, at this point I was thinking my review would end up at 3 stars. After dinner we opened up the Italian cookies (including rainbow cookies, which I didn't get a picture of since it was really just in a white paper bag) and I was so ready to dig in (I have a sweet tooth). The first bite of the rainbow cookie yielded a flavor that was certainly fresher and tastier than your local grocery store, but definitely not the best rainbow cookies I've had from an Italian bakery. I ended up eating 2 rainbow cookies and felt the same way after I was done. They tasted like good rainbow cookies would taste after sitting out for 4 or 5 days at room temperature, a bit stale. Meanwhile, the Italian cookies were really not good at all. I was so disappointed. This is not the Politos I grew up with. The cookies were dry, lacked any good flavor, and almost tasted as if they had gone bad. It's pretty tough for me to complain about a dessert, and I found myself stopping halfway through the second cookie. Don't get me wrong, I've had worse, so this place definitely doesn't deserve one star, but I really can't see myself coming back here. On saturday May 18 2024 I went to polito bakery and I see a teenager looking girl was working who either lazy or was not trained to greet customers and when I asked about small cakes , she without even getting up behind the counter simply told me the one you see are all small and when I asked about what is the difference between These two cakes, she mumbled and kind of annoyed not at me but probably at her work So I said just give me this and I pointed to the cake and asked her to write on cakes the birthday theme She refused and said I can't write so I thought for a moment may be she is fob and don't know English but she spoke English so that was not the case and at that point I said ok if you don't then I go somewhere else and looked at her and she looked as if she don't care Now this is for the owner : you are in the neighbourhood of wealthy immigrants and if your employees do not like people like us then don't think I am or we are going to move out but one good customer may bring you one but one who was not happy may make you loose ten I am a businessman and if I was you will get rid of bad bug ASAP before you simply count ten cake in morning and sane ten at night Btw since 30 years we have been patronising your bakery but this incident gave me bitterness rather then sweetness read more

If it was possible to give to give zero stars I would.... let me explain-- As I write this my hands are still trembling from the emotional upset of being assaulted by the owner for returning a cake I recently purchased from Polito Bakery. I was physically attacked and spit at by the owner as I was run out of the store fleeing for my safety as he cursed me out threatening to kill me! I am completely serious! I even went to the 3rd Precinct Police Station just a couple of blocks away to report the incident. The owner is definitely unhinged and according to the police committed a crime by spitting at me and threatening violence. And to think all because I criticized a carrot cake for being too dry! Needless to say any store owner that would behave so egregiously, even criminally, deserves to be avoided at all costs. The joke is I didn't even ask for a full refund, I just asked for some exchange-- the cake was inedible and cost $28, nobody at the party liked it and most of what was cut was tossed into the trash. I asked for $20 worth of something else despite my inconvenience and the impact on the party, figuring he could keep $8 to cover his ingredients but this guy does not know how to treat customers! Clearly, I will NEVER patronize his bakery again and suggest that you don't either! Even if you're not met with violence the baking is just not good. read more

I grew up going to Polito. I remember in the mid 90's I would walk with allowance money to get one cookie on Fridays with my grandma. It was nostalgic and special. What happened today to my father by the owner broke my heart, and we will NEVER be back. I asked my father to pick up 4 lbs of cookies in 1 lb boxes for my neighbors (I live in PA now.) He was received with the most horrible attitude. He was told it would cost $3 for the box and tape due to the increased cost of materials, and that he was an inconvenience because other customers would be coming in and my dad was in the way. He's a paying customer - I'm sorry an elderly man with an Indian accent who is trying to patronize your store is in your way. Maybe he took an extra 30 seconds to understand, but he had every intention of making a large purchase. No problem, we will never be anywhere near you again. read more

There was a time we got all of our pastries, cookies and desserts from here. Now it is a rare occasion we go, usually only when Marzullo is closed. It used to be very busy, now the parking lot is always empty. We decided to try it again yesterday and it will be our last time. The help is just plain rude. They really just don't want to be there and it shows. Their quality has also gone down hill. in the mood for a apple turnover and not feeling like driving to my usual bakery, so i decided to go to polito since it's much shorter a distance. bought 2 apple turnovers @ $2.50 each and a loaf of unseeded italian bread @ $1.90... Sorry Polito, but I am very unsatisfied with your apple turnovers. So much so that i did NOT hesitate to take time right away to write a review. I'm saving these until I can have my wife take pictures of them. I STILL don't have a phone as it's just another thing to remember to carry with me. i'm lucky to remember to take my wallet and keys when i leave the house. You expect me to also remember a phone? lol IF i didn't have a headache and just feel like crap so far, i'd bring the turnovers back. The first bite of the end, just the crusty part, tasted like oil...old oil. Then, i cut open the turnover and found only 6 small pieces of apple in the whole turnover. The largest apple piece meaasured 1.5" and the other 5 slices were at or below 1"...WOW! So, I then cut open the 2nd turnover and, SURPRISE!, there was 6 slices again with just one slice nearly 2" long and the other 5 slices were 1" or smaller. To say I feel ripped off would be an understatement and like i stated above, if i felt better i'd go return them. Taste-wise included, these are the worse apple turnovers i've EVER had... or tasted, since I only has 2 bites of the oily-tasting crust. I'm hoping the italian bread taste better but won't know until later on. if i don't edit this post, that simply meand the bread was good. BUT, other than burning it, what can a professional baker do to bread to cause it to be disgusting? Summary: The ONLY good thing, so fa, is the young girl at the counter was friendly and smiling which is NOT often experienced nowadays. Seems younger people don't like or enjoy their work and find it hard to be friendly towards thoose who help pay their bills-:) THIS young lady could teach many others how to do address customers. I was so happy and couldn't wait to Slice it up. It was not vanilla cake and I have no idea what was inside of it or what the hell it even tasted like. I have been going here for birthday cakes and other cakes and pastries for the past 6 years, today was my daughter's 10th birthday and I went to buy a vanilla birthday cake for her, I brought the cake home and after singing happy birthday and cutting the cake for all the 10year olds at her party "IT WAS SPOILED" totally disgusted and disappointed with this, the cake was sour and smelt like nail polish remover! Thank god none of the kids or guests ate the cake! I put everything back in the box and will be returning it back to them in the morning and I expect a refund and I will never recommend nor buy anything else from them! A total let down! P.s. I ordered my sons Communion cake from Polito's. I brought a picture from the internet and they really matched it nearly exact. The cake was delicious - chocolate cake with custard and strawberries with a butter cream icing. I would recommend this place and plan to come back for our next celebration. Do not go here! I ordered a carrot cake for my daughters virtual graduation. When I went to pick it up it did not look like a carrot cake so I asked the girl to double check. Though Polito's has a nice selection of cakes and cookies, their bread is by far their strongest point. Their seeded italian bread loaves are just about as good as bread can get, especially if you get there at just the right time and they're still warm. Sometimes it's difficult to get more than 1/2 of a small loaf home if they're fresh out of the oven. During the summer months, they also offer fresh made italian ices in sizes from a single scoop to quarts. Their ices tend to be be smoother and slightly more flavorful than the chain italian ices stores, and it's definately a treat worth driving a bit out of the way for on a hot day. read more

The last two times, I walked in, no one came out from the back to wait on me, and I walked out... There are other places to buy rolls. Oh well, I should have listened to the previous comments about their cakes. I mean, how can you go wrong with a simple classic strawberry shortcake? You can't. It's nearly impossible. However, you can screw up someone's celebration a bit, though hilariously it was uncool. The girl who took the order should have mentioned that she couldn't write on the cake for dickens and then tastefully mention it looks quite nice as is. I would have been way happier with that than how she just boxed it and gave it to me with some garbledy gook written on top, not really resembling what I had asked her to write.
