My #1 go to for NC Pork BBQ. Not much to look at on the outside, but ask yourself why the parking lot is away full with locals.

I stopped in with my mom and we got chicken fingers dinners, collard greens, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, and they came with hush puppy puffs.

There is a good selection of Virginia beers on tap and a rotating selection of beers from around the country on tap. They also have a cider on tap. There is a small selection of wines, canned beers, non- alcoholic beers, and for those who just graduated from soda - hard seltzer. The food menu clearly labels gluten- free and vegetarian options. There is a nice selection of appetizers, flatbreads, bowls, burgers, sandwiches. My husband and I both went with bowls I had the poke bowl and my husband had the chicken bowl. Both were delicious and above what one would expect for a pub. Mine came with succotash, which I thought was an interesting choice, but it worked. We split the pretzel, which was amazingly good. The waitress was attentive and good. They do have live music on Friday nights. There are many different happy hours during the week. Definitely we will go back

Our first table ended up being under a spotlight that was directly in our line of sight (it looked like it was meant for the specials board), so we asked to move. Staff was accommodating and got us to a better table quickly. The space itself is really nice. It was clean, rustically decorated, and the live plants in liquor bottles on the tables are a nice touch. Our server was friendly from the start and took drink orders right away. My daughter and I had sodas, and my husband ordered the Southern Charm Old Fashioned off the specials menu, which he enjoyed. The menu is on the smaller side, which we actually like. One unique detail was the option to "buy a round for the kitchen," which we thought was a really nice touch and decided to add it when we ordered our appetizer. We started with the fried deviled eggs after a friend recommended them. They were creative with three styles (classic with pickle, togarashi ginger, and crispy prosciutto), but overall a bit on the dry side and not as flavorful as we expected. We asked for Dijon, but they don't have it. Our server suggested and brought out the Baja dipping sauce instead, which did pair well and kind of improved them. My husband had the fish and chips and really enjoyed it. He said the fish was flaky and well cooked. I ordered the Union grilled cheese, which unfortunately seemed like it had been sitting a bit before being served, as the bottom was soggy. It was just okay overall and not particularly memorable for the price. The sweet potato fries on the side were the clear standout. They were crispy, the perfect balance of sweet and salty and honestly the best part of the dish. Our daughter had the kid's smashburger. It was exactly that. Service throughout the meal was good. She was friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and there when needed. The main disappointment came at the end. When our meals were served, the server actually offered sauces at the table (ketchup, mayo, ranch, etc.), and specifically suggested items like the baja sauce for the eggs and ranch to us. Because of that, we were surprised to see several charges for the sauces on the bill, especially since they were offered and recommended at the table with no mention of any additional cost. We were also charged a credit card fee, with no signage anywhere (entrance, hostess stand, or menu) indicating that paying with a card would include an extra charge. It just left an unnecessary sour note on an otherwise solid, casual meal. Nothing was bad, and nothing really stood out as exceptional, but the lack of transparency around those final charges really impacted the overall experience for us.

I finally made it to Bonchon and I can't believe it took me this long…read more The chicken tenders are next level--perfectly crispy, juicy, and that soy garlic sauce? I'm officially obsessed. It's the kind of flavor that keeps you coming back... which explains why I've been here three days in a row And the Bao buns?? Easily one of my favorite things on the menu. The staff is super welcoming and actually takes the time to walk you through everything, which I always appreciate. The sides are solid across the board, but I had to try the Korean corn dog--and I'm saying it confidently: best one I've had in Hampton Roads. If you're looking for your next go-to spot, this is it. And if you're trying to find me... there's a very good chance I'm here.

I've visited the Hilltop Bonchon a handful of times since it opened in November 2022 and the vibe…read moreis laid back, laid back to the point where, as a customer, you may find yourself checking your watch multiple times. One thing this location has going for it over the Norfolk Bonchon is that parking is readily available. When I originally pulled up, there was such ample parking that I felt like taking up 2 or 3 spots. You don't have to worry about parking at all - something I have to account for whenever I'd visit downtown Norfolk. Upon entering, their venue is roomy. The bar alone looks bigger than the entirety of the Norfolk Bonchon (not really, but Norfolk is small) and there are plenty of tables, seats and TVs. Based on the setup, this would be an ideal place to watch a game while eating some fantastic fried chicken. Service is maybe this Bonchon's biggest hurdle. The quality of service, based on my experience, has been hit and miss. Often times, the most you'll be doing is waiting as I've experienced employees who are new, don't move with any urgency, and/or simply don't listen. During one visit, our server was still in training when they decided to let her help us by herself. That resulted in us receiving incorrect orders, and something as simple as refills went unfulfilled for long periods of time. When her trainer took over, things went more smoothly, but the damage was done. To balance that out, I dined by myself one Sunday afternoon and there was only 1 server on the floor. That server was on top of things - he knew the menu, offered and explained the menu, and helped me throughout, even hooking up silent refills. That was an excellent experience, good enough to keep this Bonchon within my Hilltop rotation. Combined with 1 or 2 solid visits, this Bonchon is overall good to go. I will still stick with the notion that service is inconsistent, but at the same time I haven't seen a single employee twice (meaning turnover here is high). Final note - it's never been busy during any of my visits, so I don't know how well they're doing here. Mind you, I've never come in on a Friday or Saturday night but I fear that this Bonchon might not make it long term. Regardless, their chicken is excellent (albeit pricey). Thank you, Bonchon! I am a regular customer and have never seen the staff be anything but respectful and polite. I was a witness to this interaction. His dog had no identification as a service dog. The manager politely informed him of Virginia's policy on service animals. She also showed him where the policy is posted in the restaurant. Virginia, unfortunately, does not recognize emotional support animals as service dogs who are afforded the same accommodations as such. The staff is phenomenal here, the food is amazing, and its 30 years in business is a testament to the iconic reputation Big Sam's has. We all love dogs but restaurants have to abide by state law and Health codes. Viva La Big Sam's!

That is totally incorrect as our fully trained Dog was in your reception area no longer than 12 to 15 seconds before we were told we could not bring her in. And they were told she had to have a vest that said service dog. I've taken her to many other establishments here in Virginia Beach and no problems whatsoever. As for my experience, I'm retired but I have 45 plus years in the business. I've operated multiple outlets at one time. Also restaurants that have had over 400 seats. A major comparison to your tiny outlet. I've even operated a restaurant where we once did 418 covers in a sit-down full-service restaurant from 6:00 until 10:15. It is called knowing how to turn the tables. It is still a record to this date. So I definitely know that I have the experience to make a full and clear objective comment regarding your restaurant. As for the Ho chi Minh comment, maybe you folks should approach the Virginia Beach city council and tell them you need to close until they get the road condition improved. They should be willing to give you a government handout after all, I am sure you took one during the covid epidemic. By the way, I have over 10 years experience with the department of Defense/ United States Marine Corps operating their food and beverage outlets. And during the epidemic we remained open after 3 days because we set up a food to go program that serviced our military personnel. Just work on improving your little outlet. You may be getting better comments in the future.
