This is my new favorite place to eat. Since they have delivery it's so easy for me to enjoy them after I worked all day! I haven't gone in person so this is based solely on the food and delivery. This food is amazing! It's made fresh, it's consistent and it's priced amazingly. They have tons of options and obviously in the name "pollo" they have tons of chicken options, fresh meat and very tasty. Every time I order the chicken empanadas they're so crispy on the outside and the chicken is cooked to perfection on the inside. I also get the French fries all the time with my meals, they never come in soggy and they are made just right. Just went there yesterday! I liked my visit yesterday so I decided to go back the next day. I didn't realize I spent $26 dollars in the 8 Piece meal so I was not going to do that or else I would go to KFC or Popeyes for that price. I decided to get the 4 piece and added Empanadas for and extra $2. 4 pc of chicken, 2 sides. Unfortunately, the sides were really small. Everything came to around $15. The empanadas were the best ones I had. For the first time it's not greasy and my stomach was not upset. I wish the sides were a little bigger but the grilled chicken had flavor. Growing up, we'd always have to wait to go to Guatemala or El Salvador before eating from this place. Now that it's conveniently close, it's like a bite of home each time. The taste is no different from the one I've tried in Guatemala and El Salvador which is where it originated. So rest assured you are getting authentic food. The 4 piece meal cost $16 which is a good price since 2 people can eat from it and get full. The chicken is crispy, a bit salty, and the breading is unique so it's hard to describe. The plantains were sweet and soft, but it would've been a tiny bit better if they were a bit caramelized. The fries are really good--crispy, light, and the perfect amount of salt. The place was a bit too air conditioned for my liking to eat inside, but it's clean and inviting. It boggles my mind how much this establishment has gone downhill since my initial, impressive, visit less than a year ago. I've written more than 400 reviews thus far in my Yelp career, and I've rarely downgraded a place twice. I came here for lunch earlier this week and opted to try a chicken sandwich. Normally, you can choose between grilled chicken, or crispy fried chicken. I'd wanted grilled chicken, but was told they had not finished cooking the grilled chicken for sandwiches, so only the crispy fried sandwiches were available. So, that's what I got. The cashier who took my order was confused, and thought I wanted a salad with my sandwich, when I wanted french fries. Initially, the sandwich seemed okay. Then I bit into gristle a couple times. The worst, however, was when I got to the final one-third of my sandwich, which was tough to chew because it was UNDERCOOKED!!! The chicken was still a bit translucent, instead of opaque, but that fact was hid by the 'crispy' batter (which was more soggy than crispy, BTW). Thank God I didn't get salmonella poisoning, or this would have been a 1-star review update. I'd rather go hungry than eat here again. read more

A friend of mine who routinely goes to Guatemala was super excited that Pollo Campero had opened a location in Providence, so I wanted to try it out. I have since picked up takeout here a couple of times and the food is definitely tasty. It's a good place to go if you want a combination of fried and grilled chicken, or are in the mood for fried chicken and want something a bit different. The plantains are great, the rice and beans are kind of just okay. The horchata is pretty good - a bit on the sweet side, but a nice accompaniment to the savory food. The last time we came here, though, we went there an entire hour before closing time (as listed on Google) on a weekend evening, and when we tried to order, they were already out of a lot of the options and were no longer running the fryer. They had also already turned off the music and had put the chairs up on the tables to mop the floors. The server who took our order didn't offer an explanation and the vibe was just really odd. While we were waiting for our food, they also locked the door, and we saw another customer try to get inside with no luck. So, that makes me want to come here less often since it seems like their closing hours are kind of unstructured and unpredictable. read more

I'm going to be as fair as possible. Two stars. Because I mildly "like" the concept and idea of this food, it's the okayest meal I've had all week. But I'm keenly aware that it is latin american "fast food". That said, this restaurant need to learn how to operate more efficiently and how to provide better customer service from counter to door to its loyal local RI customers. I've ordered here several times. The short girl at the register is consistently rude and unhelpful. There has been more than one time where we were given items different from what we ordered. If I ordered and paid for the grilled chicken, that's what I should get. It's as if they will quietly and sneakily swap your grilled chicken order with fried chicken to put for minimal effort and just serve you what's already cooked and no longer fresh. That is absolutely ridiculous and no way to run a food business. Now that you know this deception, be sure to check your order thoroughly before you leave. Its almost obnoxious how much they screw up orders, and as I said some of it seems intentional, because they are constantly in a rush to shut down the kitchen, often hours before closing time, even three hour prior to close, they will lie and tell you they are out of chicken, maybe idk, if they don't like your face? There's no sense of management or accountability in the store, you cannot tell who is running the show. Even more insulting, is how they will pretend to not understand what you are saying if you don't "look Hispanic" or whatever that means. It doesn't matter if you are speaking native tongue, perfectly fluent central American Spanish as you place your order to make it easier on them - as we did. I don't have time for ignorant racial microaggressions when I'm hungry, just make the damn food and keep your personal lack of education to yourself. This restaurant would be greatly improved by retraining staff across the board on operations, food quality and customer service. Maybe the register is not the best place for that particular cashier, try her in another role, anything that doesn't require respect or responsibilities. Food wise, it ranges from delicious to mediocre. I recommend the grilled chicken (use that lime spritz) over fried. Corn salad is delightfully good, fresh, full of flavor and texture. The sweet plantains and always sweet and warm but the portions are shamefully small, it's the easiest thing to make, like c'mon. The rice is a bit salty but still palatable. I love the flan, but beware it is super sweet. I've never tried the empanada because the food trucks locally have the best ones. The fries are very basic shoestring frozen ones that are best described as "meh". I'm perturbed that the food just never seems to be served hot and the cook/wait times are outlandish. There's always a wait even when it's not busy. The food should be piping hot if people are waiting 30 mins, and they need to offer you something if it goes over that time. A drink, a side or dessert, out of sheer courtesy. I'm not gonna bother with mentioning ambience or decor as this is loudly painted chicken shack style fast food restaurant. It's as if the corporation who owns this place has no idea of its true potential. I looked up the history of this company and it was like a really wild Netflix movie. I think the owner is still around and he'd probably be pissed if he knew just how you guys are running his family business into the ground out of sheer lack of effort. There's more I'm not saying here but seriously, go wikipedia the restaurant. I'm absolutely certain Pollo Campero tastes better, and operates better in other national or global locations. Overall, I want to love this place, but it won't let me. If you've eaten here, you know what I mean. If not, and you are considering, proceed with the biblical patience of Job, go early and not too hungry, make yourself seem as Guatemalan/Honduran as possible so as not to seem unimportant to the Queen of the Register. Oh, and be prepared for the silly overpricing and poor service. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll give you what you actually asked for, and it might just actual be served hot and quick. So, I have visited a few times... There is nothing that I love more than fried chicken and especially when it is served with rice and beans! The last time I visited however I tried to use the Yelp check-in offer and the girl at the counter had no idea what to do with it. It was for a free piece of fried chicken. The manger on duty came over and told me I had to place my order online in order to redeem that offer. None of that makes sense but I quickly moved on from it. The original gal came back over to take my order, I asked for grilled chicken and she told me they didn't have any. I could tell this wasn't going to be enjoyable. The other lady then came over and asked me what I wanted and I told her that I was trying to order grilled chicken but I was informed that they were out. She looked at me and said, we have that. So here I am, completely lost, not sure what the hell is going on and I'm way too confused about chicken. I tried to order a horchata for while I waited for my order but they only had Large cups, like huge cups and I only wanted a small to try it out, so I went without! The chicken is always flavorful, the cilantro sauce is amazing and oh soooo good with the yucca fries. I have been scouring Providence, looking for a place with great fried chicken. Being a mostly southern girl, I thing that qualifies me as a fried chicken connoisseur, so when I saw chickens on the side of the building, I knew I had to venture inside. The menu reminded me of Pollo Tropical in Florida so I felt right at home with ordering. I ordered a half chicken, (half fried and half grilled) dinner with Campero beans, Campero rice and a side of plantains. Y'all, the chicken was soooooo good. Nice and crunchy with great seasoning. The grilled had a nice lime twist which was really nice. The plantains could have cooked a little longer, not that they were raw, just a bit limp and still very yellow. The rice and the beans were excellent with just the right spices and additions like veggies and jalapeno. I also had a meat pie which was very very good. I wasn't expecting that. The only negatives were that it took about 45 minutes from walking in to ordering ordering and leaving. It was a Sunday and there was a large order ahead of mine but, cmon. Almost an hour? Also, all of the food was too salty. Not inedible of course but just enough to be a little unpleasant and need a huge glass of water. I will be returning. read more

We saw an ad in the paper and decided to give this place a try. Driving down Atwells on a Saturday night was a bad start to the experience (not their fault). When I arrived there was only one family in front of me. Somehow it took the one cashier 10 minutes to ring them up. There is definitely no sense of urgency here! When I finally got to order I asked (based on my wait) if the grilled chicken was readily available. At first the girl said "oh no, that's going to take a long time!" She then turned around and said "wait, we actually have one ready." I said "Sold!!" Even though they are slow she was extremely friendly. Now to the good part. When I arrived home we were very happy with the seasoning. The chicken had a fantastic rub. The beans were full of flavor and the tortillas were muy Bueno!! If this place was easier to get to and faster on the order I would have given it an extra star. That being said, I will definitely give it another try. Yeah. I love them. We walk in to bright, happy, jovial faces. The place is well lit and clean (the dish buckets at the sanitation area can attract fruit flys but I could care less. It's less waste). The food layout is simple. I got Brest/wing/thigh with coleslaw and a roll for 6.99. Also yucca fries. The chicken was well seasoned, ridiculously juicy (like a flavor spigot) and Krispy to the point of physics defiance. The coleslaw was well dressed, not overly sweet, a tiny ghost of heat and green bell peppers. I'm a fan! Yucca fries were crispy and almost creamy. The roll had a pinch of salt. Yummy. Ive grew up with pollo Campero back in El Salvador , I expected the same flavor here , but not the same , the only thing that hasn't changed is the third world mentality of it's employees , they are hard to deal with , they seldom want to compromise with costumers to make their dining experience good . For instance , if you happen to return something that wasn't cooked trough or overcooked their employees make it difficult , they are forgetting that their chicken is well overpriced compare to Popeye's. Yessss, I finally managed to try out this place. I would have done it sooner but the lines out the door were too long after it opened. And with good reason. Pollo Campero is the Central American answer to the KFC complex. While their fried chicken is nice, what they're really renowned for is their grilled chicken. Have I had better chicken? Sure. But the chicken here is exquisitely spiced with latin flavor, it has the right level of moisture and just tastes plain good. What truly pushes it over the top are the sides. Avoid the mashed potatoes and go for the fun stuff like the cilantro infused campero beans. I'm also happy for being introduced to Yucca fries, a light but starchy alternative to regular fries. I've never eaten here before and saw it across the street from where I stopped for gas. I was pleasantly surprised. Not knowing what to expect, couldn't be happier. The chicken was the most flavorful that I've had in some time. I really enjoyed the side of beans too. Wish there was one near where I live. I am of Caribbean decent so I was excited when I heard that this place opened not too far from me. I love grilled chicken and a variety of Central/South American food/flavers. I was hoping that this would be something like the grilled Mexican chicken or maybe like Pollo Tropical (chain restaurant in So. Florida). Nope. Sorry to say, the grilled chicken fell flat. Flavor was very flat for "citrus grilled chicken". Not to mention the chicken was a little dry. We also got the fried chicken was better & more flavorful. But nothing that I would go out of my way to get. The yuca/plantain was good (hard to mess those up anyway). I didn't try the rice/beans. I also forgot to ask for the Campero sauce...maybe that would have added some more flavor? The staff was friendly, the eating area and bathroom were clean and it's easy to get to.
