Worst Chicken EVER. Do yourself a favor a stay away from this place. The chicken I was sold was hard, dry and had the odor of rotting flesh. The beans were under cooked and hard... I could go on about the horrible employees that will go out of their way to treat you poorly if you don't speak Spanish. The menu seemed ok, but this place is not the one you write home about raving about the food. Meat, rice and potatoes. And very little meat. Yesterday I called in an order for takeout. Gave them my name and they told me 10 minutes it would be ready. I drove 25 minutes to get there and when I got there the person that took my order told me that they ran out of chicken. I told him I called in the order and I spoke with them (I suspect it was the same person that was at the cash register). His excuse was that the person who took the order left. But I do not think that that is a good excuse. The order should have been in the computer and been ready for me to pick up, apparently they sold the food that was meant for me to somebody else. I believe that is very unprofessional. I was not offered any kind of compensation for my time and the gas that I used to get there. All he said was sorry we are out of chicken. Then why take my order and tell me to come pick it up in 10 minutes? read more

I have been going to Pollo Riko for 15 yrs!! The chicken if FULL of flavor, the skin is crispy, the sides are perfect portions...the 'green secret sauce' needs to be bottled and sold- it is sooo GOOD! Lunch special is a steal- I always get white rice, beans and quarter chicken with arepas (white corn bread) AND a drink for $3.88!! The service is consistently good. During lunch time- there is usually a line. I always get TO-GO, service is fast. I have suggested this place to several people and they all love it. ONLY drawback??? Charcoal chicken is amazing. The chicken here is incredible. During lunch time there will be a line going outside the door and for good reason. It is definitely well worth the wait. There is a newer location on wilcrest / 59. They're the same franchise but with slight differences. The locale on Fondren only takes cash so be prepared. The new one off wilcrest / 59 does accept cards and cash. If you like fresh, juicy chicken you have got to check this place out. The torta's at the Wilcrest location are awesome as well. Since I can remember, my family and I have been getting take-out from here for years. There have been slight varying changes to the food mostly good. I decided to drop by a few days ago and sInce we always get the same thing, my rating is based on: the white-meat chicken, fried plantains, white rice, red beans, arepa, fried yucca, and empandas. The rotisserie chicken is good. Slightly crispy and flavorful on the outside but the inside was a bit dry. The fried plantains, red beans, and fried yucca are all pretty tasty as well. The white rice was a bit hard and crispy so I think they may have over-cooked it a bit...I guess it happens sometimes right? But with all the oil you use to make the rice it is kind of difficult to mess it up. My mom's --and even my rice-- always comes out perfect. The arepas were pretty average nothing special, The empanadas were my biggest disappointment! I was particularly in a mood for them that day. For $.92 you get two miniature empandas. What you get is potato with chicken broth and maybe a bit of sazon to give the stuffing taste. Where are the tomatoes, green onions, and real meat? Utter disappointment. Overall, it is a very good price. The lunch specials are about $5 or less depending on the meat you get so it is definitely worth coming back for plus they have speedy service! PS, I read a review below about a disconcern for charging for styrofoam cups. There are many places that still charge for extra cups. Plus, how money-crunching is sparing $.25? Also, they do have a rest room. I have been coming here for years and they have always had one. read more

I tried to buy some chicken but wasn't able to because they take cash only. That's a bit odd never been to a restaurant where the only payment method is cash. Another thing is that their bathrooms smell like sewage really disgusting which kinda affects the tables near the bathroom. I doubt coming to give them a try by paying cash only. read more

PROS = Great rotisserie chicken and all the sides and the price is excellent. CONS = My friend and I got Diarrhea after eating there on 2/17/2014 on Fondren location. First time that happens, but still they must have done something wrong, cause its really not the cleanest place. Cash only is the other downside. I was very disappointed in the rotisserie chicken, as well as the sides. I ordered the 1/4 chicken with rice, corn on the cob and arepa. The chicken was tender, but the fat on the chicken was not rendered down enough for that crispy skin. The chicken could have also used some more seasoning because it was kind of flavorless. The corn and the arepa tasted like it had been sitting out for hours because when I bite into the arepa, it had a hard texture. I honestly took two small bites of it and left it alone. read more

A decent chicken roast place. Get whole/half/quarter and a bunch of different sides. I had a half chicken, beans, and salted potatoes. The chicken was pretty decent but nothing special. Chicken was soooo good nice and juicy and flavorful. I ate so quick I didn't get a chance to snap a picture haha. We got a 1/2 chicken with rice and beans (counted as two sides, but I think rice and beans should always go together!) and 2 mini empanadas (fried and crispy). Pollo Riko might appear to be a little sketchy, and it is a cash only establishment, but the empanadas with aji and slow roasted chicken are to die for. Fantastic Colombian food. The last time I visited, the patacones (fried plantains) were not quite up to par, but all of my other experiences have been overwhelmingly positive. Not really a place you would want to dine-in, the walls are bare, atmosphere is non-existent, but for take-out. It is unbeatable. *Note: Empanadas are small, and great to bring to parties, we've never had any left overs, and everyone raves over them. I have been coming here 15 years or so. It's Columbian style roasted chicken, (which is smaller than the typical grocery store chicken), juicy but less greasy. It makes a quick meal for the family, super fast counter service , and I always order to-go; it's definitely a hole n the wall joint back then and now even more so with the fenced in parking lot! I always order the super combo, whole chicken and 5 sides ; price used to be under $20 but crept up to $25 now I think; and it's a cash only place. The chicken is still the same, the sides have their hit and misses, not like it used to be, but still ok. My usual sides would be the arepas, plaintain, fried yuca, red beans and rice, potatoes, and slaw. Their tres leches used to be authentic. Now, they use the small pound cake typically found in Mexican bakery and douse it with the milk and whipped cream; it's passable fast food quality dessert but not authentic tres leches. read more

I tried this place on a Wednesday after work. The prices were great but the flavor of the chicken (1/4 White/breast) was not as expected. Having eaten at Dodos often I was expecting a bit more flavor from the chicken but that did not happen. It was more bland and one has to use the charred skin to add flavor. A delicious family dinner for less than $20 (their main combo). Plenty for 4 but you can even make it stretch for 6 people. A whole roasted chicken, and 5 sides: rice, beans, potatoes (I like the salted ones with the aji), fried yucca, fried plantains and arepas (or tortillas)... that makes 6 sides... mmmhhh... the arepas are not counted as a side. You can change the side options, but these are what we like. I am Colombian and this is a little piece of home taste, and I am proud to suggest it to anybody. They have a new place by Crosstimbers and 45. Now they accept credit cards, I don't know if in all stores, but this one does. The 2 stars are for the spicy green sauce and the crispy chicken skin. I had the 1/2 chicken with salted potatoes and corn on the cob. The food was fresh, but the corn had too much butter, the salted potatoes were like boiled potatoes with salt and the chicken didn't have any flavor at all. The only good thing about the chicken was the crispy skin. The green sauce is served at most other places that sell chicken like this so I knew it would be good. Wouldn't come back. read more
