I drove a few exits up because of the advertisement of "charcoal" chicken. My order was taken immediately at the counter. You then get called when order is ready. The restaurant is smaller with @ 12 tables and is in an older building. Bathrooms old but clean. I got a whole chicken with beans and corn on the cob. By comparison the chicken was smaller than most rotisserie places. Corn and beans were on par with most side street stand restaurants. Didn't not pick up any charcoal flavors in the chicken so would choose places that offer red chicken or places like el pollo loco instead. This place was a childhood gem, I wouldn't go all the time but when I would I go, I would go. The food is very simple and it feels like it prioritizes your soul. Not to mention how cheap it is and how much it fills your stomach, definitely worth it. Maybe the worst dining value in Houston. Don't be fooled by the seemingly low prices. The problems abound. First, the good news is that their chicken tastes pretty good. It's probably 4 stars on taste. Unfortunately, on several visits, the chicken legs and thighs were so small it could have been a large quail. My half chicken (four pieces) had less meat than two pieces from KFC or any place else. They also jack up the prices through add ons. I asked if I can get my half chicken all dark. Sure, the cashier tells me, but doesn't tell me it's 69 cents extra until after I pay. Not extra for all white like many places, but 69 cents for either. It's on the menu but not obvious. The choclo was cold and so overcooked it was crisp on one side. The arepa were dry and among the worst in Houston. My bill? $16.64 for a half chicken (only) with two little arepa, a chaclo, a plantain with cheese, and a can of Dr. Pepper. I'm glad I ordered extra since the chaclo went to the trash after one bite. They take a while to serve you even though there were few there, but the biggest drawback is that they either don't have air conditioning or they don't run it. On my last visit, it was 83 degrees outside. It was even warmer inside. They have fans running, but that's it. When I walked out, it was so much cooler even directly in the sun. I've always asked myself (or anyone else that would listen), how can a restaurant like The Cheesecake Factory do anything well when their menu reads like War and Peace? How can you cook 423 items well? Pollo Riko is the exact opposite. They do one thing, rotisserie chicken (pollo a las brassas), and they do it exceptionally well. The chicken is marinated in a blend of herbs and spices that I'm told includes beer. This may explain the physical withdrawals, including the DTs, I get when I go more than 3 or 4 days without Pollo Riko. Lunch includes a chicken quarter (white or dark), corn bread (areppa) or tortilla, two sides (rice, beans, corn on the cob, salted potatoes, etc) and a small drink all for the budget loving price of less than $4. Or, go with 3 friends and order the Super Combo and ask for it just the way the giant picture next to the cash register shows it. I don't even want to give this place one star but it's required. My family and I live all the way in cypress near 290 and we drove to this location since there is not one closer. We get there and it is CLOSED. Online it shows they are open until 11pm, we get there and on the door it says 10pm! At 9:26 pm they were CLOSED, completely. No lights were on and it was dark as if it has been closed for a while. I'm so upset that we drove the 50 minutes to this location just for the place to not even be open like it's supposed too! This place really needs a lot more exposure because honestly, Pollo Riko is as good as it gets. The restaurant itself is columbian and man, those damn south americans know how to cook. The lunch special (mon-fri) is about 4 bucks and you get a quarter of chicken (thats cooked rotisseries style with charcoal), 2 sides, your choice of a tortilla or arepa (get the arepa because they're kind of amazing), and a small drink. Even if you don't come during the special the food is still affordable. The food is extremely fresh, healthy, and cheap so do yourself a favor and stop by pollo riko. side note-the owners speak perfect english so no worries read more

I really like coming here to pick up lunch to go. They have a nice lunch special.I think it's like $4.11 for the dark meat lunch special and you get to choose two sides. The amount is perfect for me! I always seem to get potato salad as the first side and I switch it up between the salted potato or the corn. Plus for the lunch special it also comes with a drink that you can pick from the fridge right behind the cashier. Just remember to bring cash since it's cash only :/ I've had their fried plantains before and it was decent. Next time i'm thinking about trying one of their soups. I was so excited to come here because I had heard so many amazing things about this place. The rotisserie chicken was good, though it was way too fatty for my taste. The side orders were COLD!! Which is kind of a sin, when one of the sides is fried plantains. Fried plantains must be "burn your tongue" hot. Otherwise they get too chewy and the flavor gets lost, and the oil becomes cold and crusty. Anyway, my last pet peeve was that, when I ordered an extra Styrofoam cup for my drink, they charged me $.25. Really? What restaurant in a developed country does that? I go to school on Fondren and so I pass this place quite often. I am sometimes a bit skeptical of the places in this area, so I decided to yelp this place first. My friend and I each ordered the lunch special for a cheap price of $4.20. It came with 1/4 a roasted chicken, a drink, cornbread/tortilla, and two sides. The chicken was really good and literally fell off the bone. I got dark meat, and he got white meat. We ate a bit of each other's meat and we both agreed that the dark meat was better. The chicken was already good on it's own, but the addition of the green sauce they give adds even more flavor. For the sides I ordered salted potatoes and a Caesar salad and he got beans and potato salad. I was a little disappointed with the salted potatoes because they were literally just potatoes and salt. I was expecting a bit more but for the cheap price, what can I say? The Caesar salad was very fresh and light. I tried a bit of my friend's potato salad and it had a nice Mexican kick to it, which I liked. I throughly enjoyed my experience there and will definitely be visiting it a lot more. Btw for you car people out there.. the parking lot isn't very nice so watch out for the random bumps and mini hills. I stopped by to get some roasted chicken for my wife and I and I soon found out that they like to use a bait and switch approach with the customers, if your order a whole chicken you are given two side orders and one would normally think those side orders would include White Rice, Plantains and Yuca but you get two small pieces of Corn on the Cob and a House Salad that is long past it's freshness date and it turning Black. If you want steamed White Rice, Yuca or Plantains you have to pay extra. I will not be going back to that horrible place anytime soon. read more

Make sure you ask for extra. :) As for the sides, I love the fried plantains, yucca and boiled potatoes. The rice and beans are pretty standard, but aren't bad. The one side I don't care for at all is the mashed potatoes...they taste pretty gummy. The corn tortillas are the perfect vehicle for the tasty chicken. You can get a whole meal for under 20 bucks.
