Wow if I were doing one of those corporate performance review ratings, (fresh on my mind since I've just finished them at work), I would rate our dinner experience as Exceeds Expectations! Honestly my husband and I didn't know what to expect - we are familiar with Mexican food and flavors having grown up in So Cal, but Chef David's dishes reflected novel and refined blend of flavors and ingredients that were comfortingly familiar yet elevated and excitedly unique. Overall consistent theme for each dish was that the chef thoughtfully combined a harmony of flavors/ingredients. For example the Octopus dish- Smokey charred and perfectly executed octopus (ie not rubbery over cooked and dry) with contrasting sweet tart candied kumquats, resting on a rich meaty savory base sauce of chorizo aioli and paired with light citrusy shreds of celery, finished with crunchy crumbs of chicharrones- Amazing! We have had some wonderful pulpo dishes in Spain but this version of octopus is a new favorite. We started with complimentary arepas - which opened my eyes to the gooey deliciousness of Oaxaca cheese (warm crisp corn flour exterior filled with cheese and a light creamy guacamole on the side) Then the Ceviche tour- 3 remarkably balanced dishes- Octopus with a tomato based seasoning, Tuna with beurre blanc, caviar and bacon bits, and yellowtail with pineapple and chile. (Past ceviches I have had we're super lemon/lime dominated- and these were uniquely not). Steak with get this, appealing to us Spain food lovers, Iberico fat drizzle which gave the already amazing steak an umami rich rounded flavor- the steak had a crisp light char crust and was juicy tender. A bright frisse salad with pickled onions cut through the richness and a sweet carmelized mini onion rounded out the symphony of flavor profiles. Paired with this since we need veggies, was the Mushrooms with a green mole and pickled chayote squash. Again even in "just a veggie dish" a broad spectrum of flavors represented, elevating it to a hearty rich dish in its own right. We had 2 desserts because por que no? The Horchata ice cream and then the Churros (the texture again- having had multiple in Barcelona - was amazing). Crisp exterior with doughy interior and a thick chocolate dipping sauce and also a berry sauce- one of the best in recent memory! We had a bottle of Baja California Cabernet (not familiar with this region's wine but wanted to give it the full experience! And it was solid- paired well through seafood to meat dishes. Ambiance is beautiful, elegant yet not pretentious. It could be date night, or a nicer family outing. The service- props to Brent our awesome server and also all the staff we encountered- all consistently warm and you could tell passionate about what they were serving. We even had the privilege of giving our compliments to Chef David in person. He graduated from the Tijuana's Culinary Art school and we're loving what he's bringing to north county! Our subsequent dinner visit, and the following morning brunch was a horror. We decided to visit Hyatt Aviara to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday. Food was great, however, they mixed up our orders by serving a cerviche tour instead of the oysters we ordered. Got filled up on the wong order and didnt get to enjoy our entree. The next morning we had brunch at Ponto Logo; only restaurant opened for breakfast on the premise. . For some reason, this Hispanic female waitress felt it was necessary to sweep the floor while we were having breakfast that set me in a full on sinus attack. Even after I asked her to stop, she continued to sweep the floor right infront of our table. We addressed the issue but management dont care. Horror worse breakfast!!!! read more

Vivace patrons: there is nothing remotely left from its legacy. Not only did this space get a fresh makeover-- going from a more traditional, cozy/intimate environment into a large, open, modern space, but the kitchen transformed from a stellar presentation of familiar fare to something that is quite unexpected, unusual, and still very experimental. The theme is Latin American seafood. But it's not in any way attempting to take you to the beaches of Mexico or Brazil. It's much more of an experimental journey that borrows flavors and tastes from a multitude of Latin American locales and reconstitutes them into something entirely new. We started with the ceviche tour- a selection of 3 very different styles of ceviche. One was closed to a traditional mixta style you might find in a typical mariscos style restaurant. The tuna had a creamy base with a smoky flavor that actually gave it a smoky bacon flavor. The last was a hamachi ceviche that was nice with a tropical theme. I continued with the seafood spear which was a nice sampling of different types of seafood and it was paired with an amazing passion fruit sauce. (we had a lot of discussion with our server about how the sweetness and tartness of the passion fruit is such a perfect match that we never would have imagined). Hubby had the catch of the day which was a seabass- it was served whole, grilled with a side of fresh vegetables. It simply had some fresh herbs, olive oil and salt and pepper and was amazing. We finished off our meal with the churros-- totally hot and crispy from the kitchen and soft on the inside- with yummy chocolate. Great overall experience--- keep an open mind! read more

I had a great time here because the girlfriend that I went with is always a fun time but I have to be brutally honest about my experience from start to finish and I'm not sure I would come back or recommend this place to all my friends. To start, our main server was Dominic and Willy helped with some things. Both were incredible. Even though my overall experience was average, these two need a shout out. Dominic was patient and helped us taste some wines so we can find the perfect bottle. The prices here are extremely high but being in a nice resort with a great view, I expected it. My only problem with paying high prices is the food. I'll break down what I liked and disliked: Lamb: this was the special of the day and really tender. I think it was well cooked but I definitely think the salt was sprinkled very unevenly and that bothered me. I had some bites that was pure salt and almost too much. I had to dilute those really salty bites with some green rice from my other dish. The beans were good but quite salty too. I know Americans love pure salt so others may love this but it overpowered other flavors and salt doesn't impress me. Clams: the green rice was good. Scallops were perfectly cooked. Clams were ok. This dish should be scallops with the option to add clams instead. That seems more their specialty. Ceviche Tour: there is one with bacon and the chef recommends mixing it. It kind of acted like fat that hardens and was a big curdle in the end. The good part of the flavor came more from the bacon and was mild, almost flavorless outside of that. The other two were good. Watermelon Agua Fresca: very expensive cocktail because it comes with a full topo Chico and we all know how boujie that is. It was just ok to me. Very mild watermelon and barely any tequila in such a large drink. Chocolate Molten Lava Cake: now we went for my birthday and restaurants usually give you a free dessert even if it's a cheesecake that's the size of my finger. Huntress and campfire even gave me a signed card from the restaurant staff. I didn't need any of this stuff but as we ordered the chocolate cake that we were willing to pay for... I was even more disappointed to end with this. I swear to god they forgot an ingredient in ours when they made this. It tasted very bland, mild, and had no flavor. My friend and I both love molten lava cake but we took two bites and left it. Very disappointing.. Espresso Martini: another $20 cocktail. We ordered 6 of these total and these were actually very good. We should have had another round of these instead of that chocolate cake. Overall, I wouldn't be dying to spend this kind of money here again. It's not in a convenient location in Carlsbad. It's far from the hustle and bustle. Valet is the only option, which the restaurant does validate for you. The marketing person doesn't seem to know what she's doing. The place was empty and nobody knows about this place except the two foodies that got a collab here. If it's far from a "happening scene", expensive, only caters to a specific crowd, you need to step up your game. I feel bad for the servers who are amazing and not getting the business they need because of various things this place may lack. read more

We had the immense pleasure of having our rehearsal dinner at Ponto Lago May 31st. Our server Alejandro and his assistant made the experience incredible. I had brought my own decor to set up right before our guests arrived and without being asked Alejandro and the staff set all of it up for us so it would be ready when we got there with candles lit and wine ready to be poured. The food was delicious and came out perfectly timed which is not easy for a table of 24. The kitchen did an amazing job. Alejandro made sure every guest was happy through every second of the meal. Our guests couldn't stop raving about him after! We love Ponto Lago and can't wait to come back. Thank you again! read more

Came here for brunch yesterday and the food was very fresh. Everything was presented perfectly. The oysters especially were magnificent. Service was impeccable. Staff was very attentive and thorough, without interrupting. One of the managers even went out of her way to bring more smoke salmon directly to our table when she saw the buffet has temporarily ran out while I was attempting to get some. We also ordered the margarita flight which was pretty good too. I didn't get pictures but the paella, chilaquiles, roasted chicken, and carved meats were very tasty as well. I wanted to like this place. I chose it because of the good Yelp reviews as they are usually correct. The waitstaff was great. The room was nice. Unfortunately the food was below average. We started with the Bay Scallop Ceviche which was very good except we received stale tortilla chips. I complained about this and remarkably they brought fresh tortilla chips in under 90 seconds. For mains - I ordered the Lobster Pibil and my date ordered the Yucatan Chicken. The lobster was very salty and had an ammonia taste. It is a rare occasion that I return a dish; however, I tried but could not enjoy it. The chicken was average. We also had Wood Fired Asparagus that we enjoyed. They were nice to take the lobster and the asparagus off of the bill but I would have much preferred to get the great meal I was expecting. read more

The ambiance was beautiful with view of the open kitchen for some entertainment while dining. Started off with an appetizer that was compliments of the chef and guacamole & chips. The seafood paella was the dish that my husband and I were very impressed with and it went soo well with the grilled spring lamb loin which was the most tasteful with gooseberries and pineapple reduction. We had to finish our dinner with churros, of course. It came with two churros so we got to enjoy our own. I had the pleasure of being one of the first first to dine in this beautiful new restaurant. The re-design is gorgeous featuring an open kitchen, great views and a forward bar. Our server Stephen said the culinary delights are inspired by Coastal Latin American food traditions. It's a broad category allowing for many twists and turns and they deliver very nicely. I enjoyed some Incredible appetizers including a tuna "ceviche" with bacon, "arepas", empanadas, and my favorite, a mushroom dish (that I could not recall the name of). I was stuffed by the time my main dish arrived, a succulent bone-in steak dressed with pork fat. That was AMAZING. My fellow guests enjoyed their seafood main dishes. This is a very nice restaurant inside the aviara resort. I'm only giving it 2 stars because the food was good at best but mostly mediocre and the service was terrible. Our waiter was patronizing and over bearing. He kept addressing the men at the table and ignoring the women. He suggested a couple of " must have " dishes that were not good at all like the flan, and the Tijuana salad. The burnt cabbage was good, the mushrooms were ok , the Branzino was fine but not the best I've had for sure. We got almost everything from their small menu and I must say I would not come back. Some great like the lobster tacos. The drinks were good. The BAD The service was awful. We waited so long for the food the kids were losing their minds. Actually...So were the adults. It didn't make sense bc the place was empty. The super nice girl that was filling our water needed training. My partner and I visited the Ponto Lago restaurant for our anniversary this past weekend. Wow! I was blown away by the service and the dishes! Our server was Tyler and he was very attentive and kind. He explained the mezcal flight in detail and showed us the bottles so that we could reference them later! We tried their pistachio negroni and piña loca margarita, both were quite delicious. The arepas were delicious as well as the octopus appetizer. For entrees, we had the lamb spear (served medium) and the seafood paella (with the catch of the day being swordfish). I adored both dishes and the paella was quite a large serving all things considered. All in all, lovely place with wonderful service! read more

First off, the property is just beautiful and relaxing. Gorgeous resort nestled not too far off 5 freeway in Carlsbad. Service is top notch, what you would expect of a luxury hotel like the Hyatt. The Ceviche tour was special, and highly recommend, though a bit pricey. Fresh seafood, balanced with citrus and herbs. It was better than most ceviche I've had. Ordered whole branzino to share for dinner. Sides of fish were crisped delightfully. The sautéed veggies and tomatoes were delicious but almost overwhelmed the crispness of the fish. Next time may request slightly less on top, and have on side just to preserve that special, delicate skin. Fish came fileted for us, but still requested server to split onto plates which was done nicely. Had a few bones which was disappointing, but happens with whole fish. Would order again for sure. Sides were sweet potatoes, charred asparagus and blue corn fava beans with mushrooms. All prepared meticulously with extraordinary flavor. Can't decide which was my fave. Thankfully had many people to share with. I think I liked the crunch of the asparagus the most to offset the soft toppings on the fish. Didn't take photos of the desert, but the churros were great. We stayed at the Aviara and prior to the new renovation, the former restaurant was fantastic. This time around just so so. The renovation is gorgeous and love the way the kitchen is viewable. But then came the service. The waiter took 15 minutes after being seated just to ask if we wanted water. Also he was not the main server for our table, luckily he was helping. And it wasnt full capacity. Then took another 10-15 to bring it. We had to order our cocktails at the same time of ordering out dinner. My wife ordered a 2nd drink 1/2 way theu the meal, which they never brought and out of frustration, forgot to check the bill if they charged for it. We ordered a dozen pacific oysters. Extremely overly salty that you couldnt taste the oyster. Then they served it with a spicy sauce like watery Sriracha which didnt compliment it-very salty with spicy? Shoudlve stuck with the mignonette. The vinegar sweetness was very much needed. Even lemon didnt help. I also got the seabass, but was out of that fish. They substituted a different fish with the same recipe. It was drowning in a bowl of a oily pickely sauce. A simple drizzle of it wouldve been better, hard to taste the fish again. Wife had the seafood paella. Pretty good. And served in a 1-2 person paella pan. The best part was the complimentary masa cheese pattys. Should be apart of a main meal. Seemed like a deep fried cheese tamale. After we finished dinner. We sat for another i think another 20 mins waiting for the waiter to comeback, clear the table and ask about desert. A nice lady, possibly the manager came by and started clearing the table for our waiter. Know that the restaurant was getting very empty. We got the wonderful champorado and some type of fruit mousse. Both were great. Over all need to work on the oysters, if those are just the way they are, need a better varity of oysters. Then server needs to step their game up. Need to be on the initial water/drinks service and the clean up. Dont need to hover over guests, but atleast be observant if it seems they may need something. read more

This was our second time going to ponto lago for brunch. The first time, brunch was new for them so I was more forgiving. This second time they had the same problems so I decided to leave a review. The buffet had three main areas: cold cuts/salad, hot food, and desserts. Desserts were in a different room. The only place where plates were available for guests were by the hot food. And the plates were hot, sometimes burning hot! A lady in line had to put the plate down because it was too hot to hold. I would suggest cold plates for the salads and cold cuts. And smaller plates next to the dessert table for all the delicacy. The buffet was a good way to sample many of their regular dinner menu items like ceviche, seafood paella and churro. And we enjoyed the endless raw oysters. But since its buffet style the temperature is not quite right. The fruits are usually exceptional but also was warmed up by the hot plates. Hopefully the staff will fine tune the details so that the buffet is a better experience. read more

Not worth the hype. They are racist. We arrived better dressed than everyone there (even the hostesses) and we were placed at the WORST table they have. All the other diners had on shorts, sweats and baseball caps (even though the restaurant tells you to dress somewhat nice) and they were proudly seated at nice tables. My husband was first to mention that there seemed to be some racism involved, and he is white. It was a very uncomfortable situation for us both. The hostess literally walked us past multiple empty tables in the center of the dining room to the smallest darkest table. We questioned why we were brought to this table and asked if any of the multitude of empty tables were available, we were escorted back to the hostess stand and asked to sit on the couch and told we would be informed when a table was ready. The hostess was clearly annoyed. Keep in mind the occupancy of the restaurant was perhaps 30 percent at most and on Saturday night at 8 pm. After a 10 minute wait to simply put silverware and a napkin on the table we were brought through the restaurant to be seated. This was all so embarrassing and simply unacceptable. Clearly the staff needs some training on diversity. So, we sat at the new table that was sticky to the touch and still just tried to make a nice night out of it. But the food was lack luster. The smoked fish appetizer tasted like they used a chemical or too much chemical to make the smoke. The paella was lacking flavor so I asked for salt and pepper and it still was not good. I only ate a small portion of it. The steak my husband ordered was very good I will give them that. The dessert was nothing to write home about either. The churros were good but the tres leches was undesirable. Overall bad experience. Like idiots we still went to the Sunday brunch the next day. Oh brother. The pork roast was VERY undercooked. So much so we asked them to take the entire thing off the carving station and to cook it more for everyone. And nothing else was worth eating or mentioning. The dessert was all leftover from the night before and it did indeed look like an afterthought. Lastly the service for the brunch was unbelievably slow. We could not find our server at all and she never came to check on us. Again, the restaurant was practically empty so it's not like she had a lot to do. Seriously, a really bad experience. read more

Hostess was very nice, had the reservation and knew it was a birthday dinner. Downhill from there... Service was inexperienced and slow, tiny cocktails and wine pour was just pitiful. Very limited (focused) menu but food tasted good and was fresh. Restaurant open concept looks cool but no intimacy with lots of noise and light... not the atmosphere you would expect for a $250 birthday dinner for 2 at a high end resort. Maybe a nice take for visitors to the resort, but I don't see this becoming one of the Carlsbad's go-to restaurants. read more

I love this restaurant. It is now my favorite restaurant in Carlsbad. The waits staff is fantastic and the food is amazing. I loved this restaurant so much that I encouraged 2 friends to try it and I went back again a few weeks later with another friend. They all loved it too. The food was just extraordinary. They give you complimentary arepas to start the meal and they are small but yummy. Every item on the menu was amazing. The portion sizes (in general are good though the quail is ridiculously small). The prices are not bad if you don't order a main course. On one visit I had the Mango Tango roll and it was huge, filling and scrumptious and only $19 - a steal of a deal. On another visit I had the prime rib which was also scrumptious but had a lot of fat and not nearly as much meat as I had hoped. We split it between 2 people but we wanted more. The one complaint I have is that this steak was CRAZY expensive and way overpriced for the amount. Some things are very reasonably priced and a few items are over the top expensive. You have to have the churros. They are just like the ones you get in Spain. My only complaint is that they come with a chocolate sauce that no where near matches the quality of the churros themselves. I lived in Spain and the chocolate here was extremely disappointing in taste, texture, thickness and temperature. I think they could improve upon this chocolate sauce and it would make the experience even better. Truly, the chocolate sauce was the only disappointment other than a few crazily priced items. We ordered a Sangria and although it was in a big glass, it was $20 - definitely a hefty price for a mostly fruity drink. I can't wait to go back. I wish I could remember my server's name. My first server was Dominic and he was wonderful. When my friend took her husband they had Dominic too and loved him. Staff was very cordial, buffet had a variety of choices and overall excellent ambience

Came back last night and our experience was a complete 180 from the last time we were here. Alejandro deserves to be promoted. He was an amazing server! We ordered some great dishes: Arepas, empanadas, seafood spear, pacific Manilla clams with green rice, and striped bass - all delicious! Also tried three different red wine by the glass and they weren't bad either. They also make a wonderful dirty martini. Will be back soon. read more

Good food, great service! It exceeded my expectations. Food was delicately made with the home cooking feel in a refined setting. Will definitely return! Suckling pig was delicious and surprisingly the rib eye was very well delivered. read more
