I really wanted to love this place again because a couple years ago I had one of the most delicious smoothies here -- fresh, vibrant, and made with care. Unfortunately, my recent visit was the complete opposite experience. I even called ahead to make sure they still had a natural fruit smoothie like the one I enjoyed before. The person on the phone said yes and recommended the Berry Plant Smoothie with protein. When I came in and ordered it, the drink I received tasted very synthetic -- chalky, artificial, and just not drinkable. For a $10 smoothie, I expected something nourishing and natural. When I politely asked if I could have it remade without the protein powder, the manager argued with me instead of trying to find a solution. She told me "this isn't Starbucks" and acted like I was being unreasonable, even though all I wanted was a smoothie I could actually enjoy. Eventually they did remake it, but with a lot of attitude, and honestly, the second version still wasn't good. Mostly ice, very little fruit, and none of the care or flavor I remembered from before. Love the name! I've walked by the past two summers I've been out here, but never went in. On my first morning being here, I didn't have any coffee, and I was staying right around the corner, so what a perfect time. There were a number of people inside already, and it's adjacent to a bank, which is pretty cool. I ordered the large cafe latte with an extra shot, to go. I didn't have to wait too long, and I appreciated the little heart which I'm sure would've looked better if I was staying. The coffee was just the right temp and very good! Solid espresso, medium roast and a bright flavor but not much tartness (a good thing IMO). Better than average. More of a downtown corporate feel than a hipster joint inside, but they do have local baked pastries and such. Recommended. read more

There are so many amazing coffee places in Ashland and Pony is of course a part of this list! Located right in downtown, pony is a fantastic spot to grab a coffee. Pony is definitely one of the more social coffee scenes. Every time I go, there is a plethora of people socializing no matter the time of day. If you love the busy coffee shop feel- Pony doesn't disappoint. They also have GREAT wifi! If you want to work there it has plenty of outlets and fast connection. It is also so sociable that a zoom meeting with headphones would go unnoticed. Pony is a standout to me because their coffee is top notch- specifically their seasonal drinks. Whoever the creative barista is that makes the seasonal menu knocks it out of the park! They are 1) really fun to order with cool names and 2) always something I have never thought about before. The baristas there are the sweetest and so kind! They always are chatty and asking about your day. (It's kinda an Ashland trait but at pony they are extra friendly). There is a free 4 hour parking lot right next to the location as well so you never have to worry about your car. Highly recommend this spot!! read more

Seating is limited, but the coffee isn't bad. The staff is great. This place attracts the oldsters and a few rude millennials.

I never seem to have a pleasant experience here. Straight up rude employees and overly sweet, overpriced, tasteless drinks. I once asked the staff what beans they used and they said "I'm not sure." I will choose to support one of the many cafes in ashland with a significantly improved atmosphere, customer service, and product offerings. read more

Saturday morning and I'm heading for another coffee place in my new home town. The name Pony Espresso makes me smile, a playful nudge to time in US history. When I walk inside it's warm and welcoming, soft light, a friendly "good morning" and only a few patrons inside sipping coffee and catching up. I can't help but notice that -at the entrance- the only little free newspaper is a Christian one. Is this a coincidence or is there a reason? I guess I will find out in time. I'm ordering an ordinary drip coffee, served in a Pony Espresso cup. Chat with the barista, always good to make friends with a barista, they're the ones often pouring your very first cup of coffee. The only thing that seems to gives away this isn't a "hip and trendy" place like Case Coffee is the music: it's mostly "older music," which is fine for a Saturday morning. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how it feels. It's a place where one can have a conversation without music that's too loud, there's a big corner sofa that's inviting for long afternoons and chats while sipping a drink of choice. There's a display with pastries which I haven't tried (yet). Free 2-hour parking in front of the place. This could easily be a place where I'll have my coffee and meet a friend. read more

Was surprised how long it took us to find a coffee shop when we arrived in Ashland early for a 1:30 p.m. show. Someone noticed us on a corner, looking around, and asked if we were looking for something...we mentioned coffee and she said this place was the best (think she was with the Chamber of Commerce possibly). i ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese, and my boyfriend got the chicken bacon ranch wrap. i took his avocado on the side, and the combo absolutely ate. the first time the server brought it over and he apologized and said it was a little well done--but it was pretty much burnt. i brought it back with my apologies but he said no worries and made me a new one no problem ! both of the workers there were really nice and talked to us and other customers. vibe was super cute coffee-shop and we sat at the bar facing the window and loved it for a quick breakfast spot ! read more

The Pony Expresso, long popular in Jacksonville, has opened a branch in Ashland. I ate the chicken-cashew sandwich on focaccia bread. The filling was chicken salad with cashews, tomato, lettuce and onion. The bread was mass produced and bland. A dill pickle quarter was included. Based on the price and quality of my sandwich, Pony Expresso may have a hard time competing with Cafe 116 (just about across the street) and other coffee houses in Ashland. The cafe serves Alann Brothers coffee. read more
