The Aussie meat pie had great flavor and the roasted veggie and curry was a nice surprise. The coconut milk gave the curry a nice flavor. The coconut cream pie was my favorite out of the sweets with matcha chess pie coming in close second. The coconut cream pie had big chunks of sliced coconut in it, which was great and the matcha pie tasted like good quality matcha. They are both being sold for a limited run, but hope they can make it on the permanent menu! Go try them out if you can, you won't be disappointed! The very berry pie was too tart and needed to be a little sweeter in my opinion. The texture of the filling was also off, and tasted like gelatin. The crust wasn't as flaky as I expected, but it was decently tender! The shop itself is really cute and they followed COVID protocol. The service was also very friendly and fast, but I would not recommend this place for anyone trying to get sweet pies. My friends and I had tried 4 different sweet pies on their menu and were all underwhelmed. Wow, did they get it right! This location has changed hands a couple of times but the current business ...Pop Pie is absolutely incredible. If you haven't been in to try one of the delicious pies you're missing out. My personal favorite is the chicken pot pie, it's full of big chunks of delicious white chicken breast in a creamy sauce with lots of vegetables. The crust is unbelievable, soft flaky just perfect. My husband loves the meat pie, ground beef in a delicious sauce. We've tried it four different times now and it does not disappoint. I would highly recommend this to anyone. I wanted a small dinner and got it to go. This was my first time to try, and initially wanted to get the steak and ale. But, when I arrived, the classic chicken was just coming out of the oven. I have eaten here before and pies were ok. Today I was visiting Sidecar Doughnuts next door (which are amazing) but needed to use the restroom. I went next door to see if I could use their restroom. The employee said no, only for paying customers. I said I understand but I'm 9 month pregnant do you think you could make an exception and said no and said to try Starbucks down the street. I really needed to go and I am 9 months pregnant so walking down the street just seemed so difficult, so I felt forced to buy something. Now I understand the concept of keeping restrooms for paying customers to keep it clean but thought this was a harsh response given the circumstances- not friendly or welcoming - it left a bad taste in my mouth. Visited Pop Pie today and I ordered the Coconut Cream Pie. Personally, I really like coconut cream pie and I cannot confidently recommend it. The taste was fine but there were big slivers of coconut in the pie and they were a little too big for me. The service was great! The woman behind the counter was very inviting and the place was clean and bright! The store was not crowded and it looked like they were taking proper COVID precautions! I found it to be quite strong but as I ate it more, I began to enjoy it steadily with the pecan flavor. I guess if you order a pie that has bourbon, you want to be able to taste the bourbon, am I right? Really good. Pie is very very difficult to make and the dough is very hard to get right. My favorite is the Aussie Pie with mashed potatoes combo. It's like a shepherds pie if you combine them (which they should make one like that)! The Classic Chicken Pot Pie was okay. The chicken breast cubes are quite big, it's not as creamy and missing something in the taste. It also dries up the next day so try to finish it the same day. Amazing pies with tasty options to choose from! When it comes to pies the crust is the star of the show and Pot Pie Does not disappoint! Chicken Pot Pie - $9 The crust was chewy and flakey, with a nice buttery taste that was mellow and not overwhelming. The burnt parts were crunchy and excellent! The filling was also spot on with all the vegetables perfectly cooked. HOWEVER some of the chicken pieces were waaay overcooked (which is understandable since its already made and not made to order) but still it was very disappointing. I really wanted to like this place as I am a huge pot pie fan but I don't think there will be a repeat visit. Don't get me wrong, I did really enjoy the chicken pot pie, but the green hog was ok, as was the veggie curry. Plus factor in the almost $10 per pie makes these a tough sell for me. Like most restaurants during covid, these guys had curbside pick up. When we got home, we took the pies out of their individually placed carton containers and pigged out. Chix pie: I loved the sauce the most. They used sage or whatever that herb is that is so pronounced in the sauce. I also liked that they used those tiny french onions. Then of course the homemade crust was super yummy and flaky. What I really didn't like was the dry chicken. I really can't understand why people insist on using white meat here. I always use dark meat and it turns out great. Green Hog Pie: On the salty side for us and nothing that great in this pie. There wasn't anything that stood out that made me want more. Veggie curry: I didn't like this one too much because the curry was on the sweet side. Lover liked this one the best out of the other 2 though. I have tried to even avoid those places to keep my interactions with humankind to a minimum. Pop Pie will have me reconsidering those thoughts going forward. I was already getting tired of my homemade daily office sandwich routine from the previous week, so this past Saturday I was determined to mix it up. After racking my brain I remembered that an old favorite, Pie Not, had been acquired by a similar company out of San Diego. Their website made my ordering efforts easy as, yep you guessed it - pie. Sorry, couldn't resist. Clicked the order now button and in a few short minutes had plugged in my cc number and made my selections, and chose the time for next day pickup. Following their instructions to call as soon as I hit the parking lot, a very pleasant and efficient lass answered. I swear she was at my car window in less than 2 minutes. Dang, I could get used to this if and when we are back to "normal." My choices were chicken pot pie, steak and ale, and green hog and cheese. So far I have only tried the chicken, and it was beyond delicious and flavorful. Small in circumference but it felt like 2lbs in my hand. In fact, I couldn't even finish it in one sitting with the salad I had made to go with. I opted for frozen, and the baking directions resulted in a perfectly baked wonderfully smelling lil' gem. This may even be better than Pie Not's version, with a super flaky crust and chocked full of succulent chunks of white breast meat. My only nit-picky issue would not be most ppl's - the need for more veggies. Check out their online menu for additional savory choices, and per other Yelp reviews their dessert pies are also worthy. So there you have it my fellow shut-ins, a somewhat unique choice to break up the dietary monotony until we can once again crowd shoulder to shoulder in our favorite eating and drinking hot spots. With their main location in San Diego, I had been wanting to give this place a try for a while now and I was stoked to hear they opened up a location in Costa Mesa. This shop airs on the smaller side, with limited table seating and little shaded areas in the afternoon. However, these pies hold up very well to-go! I've tried three savory pies: Green Hog and Cheese, Steak and Ale, and Chicken Pot Pie. All three were served warm! The Green Hog and Cheese was definitely my favorite, as it was a nice twist on the classic pot pie filled with juicy carnitas, cheese, and a zesty lime sauce. The Steak and Ale and Chicken Pot pies had more traditional flavors but were done very well, classic and comforting! What really stood out to me was the crust. Perfectly flaky, buttery, crisp, and DELICIOUS. I also tried their Citrus Pear and S'mores pies. The citrus pear was amazing! Sweet and spiced pears, tart and creamy orange topping, and (of course) delicious crust. The S'mores pie is good if you're a chocolate lover, but it was a little too rich for me. I really love this place. I have yet to have a bad thing here, and consider it a highlight of 17th st. For the review, I bought the Guava Cream Cheese Handpie, and the Aussie Meat Pie. Both were beyond expectation. When I say the crust was perfection, I mean it. These guys have mastered it for both sweet and savory. The guava was utterly wonderful, and I still think about it sometimes. Which I think is key, they definitely got me hooked!
