I had a big Poppa burger with cheese & jalapeno, fries and a Coke. Great for the price. My wife had a little Poppa burger (also with cheese & jalapeno), and fries with chili and cheese. She was very happy, and we got out of there for less than $30. If you're looking for artisan ingredients, table service, or "the best in town," you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're looking for a piece of Houston history and culture, fun counter staff, and a solid meal at a great price, definitely give this place a shot. And in times like covid, businesses like this need more help than ever, and I find it pretty shameful to read some people's treatment of businesses and their reasoning on why they're going to go around giving bad ratings to little places like this, which is why, for a place which I personally am not really into, I'm still definitely giving 4 stars. [Brenda Meeks voice from the Scary Movie franchise] That's my JAM right there. Listen to it. PB (Poppa Burger, not Princess Buttercup) is one of several no-frills historical burger joints ringing CBD. This includes at the very least Champ on Sampson, Sparkle on Dowling, Stanton on Edwards, and the Nickel Sandwich Grill on Lyons. The multigenerational appeal to these joints is competitive pricing and accessibility for working class families that need a quick bite in the neighborhood to support their locally owned businesses rather than putting another shekel in the hands of a soulless megacorp that replaces hard working single mothers trying to support their families with automated kiosks in their stores rather than paying our siblings in solidarity livable wages. Lookin' at you, gilded arches. The concept of no-frills, affordable, order at the window, no white linen table cloths or waiters named Francois, and olde fashioned standards (e.g. no gold flakes, aioli, or duck fat) do not appeal to everyone. For example if your memefriends only like your yelp check ins at Uchi, Rainbow Lodge, and other $$$$$ restos then you are probably not going to have a fun time at a place like PB, even if you have had a few puffs of the recently decriminalized devil's lettuce and are finally ready to take your fascist and irritating type-A tendencies down a notch. Whereas from my common perspective I think this place is a bit fancier than needed and is putting on airs since they do not have a drive thru and they make me get out of my car - how rude. The Wendy's def knows how to treat a gentlesir better by allowing him to inch forward in his car through the drive thru whilst listening to NPR. You can pull into the two-ish parking spaces on N. Main as you head north or you can swing right on Harrington and pull into the lot on the rear. Now that you are out of the car in the hot heat of Houston it is time to git your food and go back to the air conditioning. They do not have a company website to browse beforehand so you are stuck with blurry, terrible photos of the window menu from yelpers that have visited previously. The menu is behind glass and there is a lot of glare so no photos of the menu are going to be super great. Most of the burgers are in the $2-4 range; the fries and onion rings are $1.39; and they have a bunch of non-burger and fries stuff. For burgerville their sizing system runs like Little Poppa, Poppa, and Double Daddy. I am not sure exactly why the name changes from Poppa to Daddy suddenly, especially in light of the twitterverse that is really ruining the term "daddy" which is going to make me have my kids start calling me "bruh" or something with less twitter related baggage as they grow older. The double daddy is the one that comes with a slice of Texas Toast separating the two patties in the middle of the burger. For slight upcharge you can add cheese, bacon, and/or jalapeños as you like. I went with the bacon since the atrocious experience at Fly By in Humble was still on my mind as they deprived me of the bacon I had ordered. So I was dead set on there being bacon in this burger so I didn't get a slap and a pickle twice on consecutive Fridays at burger joints when I wanted BACON on my burger. Wait was a little less than ten minutes for my food which is fine. Unlike Fly By, PB actually understood my order and produced precisely what I had ordered. I had my two patties, the bun, the tomate/lechuga, the mustard/mayo, the Texas Toast, and [dramatic gasp] the glorious bacon! It was a beautiful creation especially in light of the other dour reviews. The patties were juicy, the Toast provided a pleasing textural offset, and the other stuff contributed to a mighty fine burger experience especially taking into consideration the price point less than HALF of Whataburger. The freedom fries were sized similar to McDs as the longer slender type, even more slender than Whataburger's; but they were the flaccid almost spongy type rather than the crisp, firmer, springier style. They were not remarkable in the spectrum of the food hall of fame but at $1.39 you don't exactly get to expect them to give you the royal treatment. This side puts in enough work to be suitable as a side to a more impressive burger. There is nothing gourmet about the food experience so it's a Whataburger substitute, and quite one at that. The ambiance is limited to the rumbling of heavy trucks down N. Main a few feet from your face at the order window and the local memory of the teenager that got stabbed by a homeless man here back in December. There are multiple signs everywhere letting you know you are on camera so it's not an ideal place to bring your memefriend for a car brojob unless you like an audience. But to pick up a $6ish lunch to go? B-e-a-utiful. read more
