Our son and daughter-in-law raved about the "healthy" food at this place and we met them for a very tasty lunch. We snarfed a couple Alamo plates with a plethora of goodies, brown rice, shredded kale, TX blend of shredded cheeses, cherry tomatoes, black beans, diced red onion, tortilla chips, roasted pieces of chicken thigh and a killer chipotle-lime vinaigrette and a squeeze of lime....came with a slice of sourdough.....amazing. The girls both got Meditteranean protein plates, white basmati rice, roasted pieces of chicken thigh, mozzarella-tomato salad, warm chickpeas, roasted broccolini, hummus, tzatziki spicy harissa, yum. Our granddaughter got her own plate, a bento box wit' grilled brussel sprouts, grilled cauliflower, brown rice and grilled chicken which she kept trying to feed to grandma. The Kids meal was half price. We shared three cookies between 3 adults and 2 grandbabies, one L&G cookie, a brownie and one rosemary shortbread cookie. Everybody got to taste my berry smoothie. I love an indulgent meal just like everyone else, but sometimes I get a major craving for something on the healthier side. Something that doesn't make me have regret after having it. Leaf & Grain is the spot to satisfy those cravings. This West University location is easy to find and it located on a corner of a large shopping strip. Parking is plentiful. Inside is spacious and is warm and inviting with lots of seating. Counter service is how they run business and they do it well with a great customer service. As I'm sure you've guessed from their name, they specialize in salads and grain bowls. The menu is not big by any means. A little more variety would be great. Both the salad and grain bowl categories have about 3 or 4 options each. They also have 3 plate options as well with chicken or seafood. If you're in the mood for a sandwich they have a few of those options as well. My eyes locked in on one of their seasonal warm bowls. In the summer months, they have cooler, cold options. My eyes locked in on the Massaman Curry. I'm a sucker for Thai flavors and this bowl was calling out to me. It came with a bed of brown rice, topped with chicken, peppers, onions, cilantro, spinach and topped with a curry sauce. They also gave a chili powder on the side if I wanted to make it spicy along with some peanuts. Yes please! The bowl was presented nicely. I mixed it all together and added a dash of the Thai chili powder. This dish was delicious. Not trying to be funny, but I wasn't expecting that much flavor coming out of a dish from a grain and salad spot. The ingredients were fresh and the curry was so flavorful. I tasted hints of coconut that made it slightly sweet, but it packed some heat to it as well. I loved the contrast in textures as well. I washed it down with a Mango Deck (mango, strawberries, banana, agave and coconut milk) smoothie which was a perfect, refreshing sip to go along with the spicy meal. There's very few things that I love more than a health-conscious restaurant with enjoyable options! I often find myself compromising either taste, nutrition, or value, but this restaurant covers all three bases quite well. Namely, Leaf and Grain dodges one of the most common pitfalls that healthy restaurants make: a lack of protein heavy menu options. Fiber, vitamins, complex carbs -- all great stuff, but where's the muscle for all the weightlifters out there? Their Mediterranean Protein Bowl ($15) touts a whopping 41g of protein while making for a tasty lunch. Moreover, I felt satisfied with the portion sizes of all the ingredients *except* the chicken. You have the option to choose between cuts and a whole piece; I chose the cuts and felt quite shorted. Their chunky monkey ($7.95) also adds a nice little kick to the conventional banana and nut butter smoothie. For just $0.50 extra, they'll throw in a 20g scoop of protein in there. I usually make my own smoothies, but it's an acceptable price compared to competitors and serves as a great macro-friendly option during a time crunch. From the friendly employees to the vibrant atmosphere, this place simply works. I'd love to go back whenever I'm in West U again. read more

Wow wow wow! Such an amazing healthy restaurant! Think of this as a healthy version of chipotle & cava if they had a baby. They have bowls, salads & actual plate dishes if you're more on the hungry side. When you first walk in for the first time it is a bit confusing where to order due to there being no clear signage/arrow or line divider saying to order here sort of like chipotle. Once you get there the staff is friendly and offer suggestions and top items most people order. I got the Common Table grain bowl and it was DELISH! Now that 2024 has rolled around, many of us are detoxing and trying to get ourselves set up with healthier habits while eating delicious food. Leaf & Grain embodies both, while maintaining consistency and has garnered a loyal following in the process. They're a stellar option in West U and certainly one of my favorite places to not just enjoy a good meal, but a meal that's good for you. I tend to prefer coming on the weekdays, as it's never too busy in here. The clean and bright interior makes this place an ideal spot for a quick lunch, meeting, or even a small gathering. They have limited outdoor seating and plenty of parking to boot. One cannot go wrong with either a grain bowl or a salad bowl. The Alamo or Common Table bowl has been my go-tos, and the L&G Caesar and the Autumn Harvest have been excellent salad choices. I particularly enjoy the seasonal offerings, which vary throughout the season but are great even if they are temporary. I've been hooked on their hot plates as of late, the French Country Dinner is a real treat. The smoothies are not talked about enough. The Chunky Monkey is always a fun choice, but the Leaf & Green is always a reliable choice. Berry Boost! is really great during the summer time, but the Strawberry Banana is actually a thumbs up for kids. To make things even more awesome, their ultra generous first time Yelp check-in offer (25%) is easily among the best in the area. Plenty of corporate chains do what Leaf & Grain does but very few do it as well. It's hard not to be impressed with all that Deets and his amazing team has done. Their empire has slowly grown to several locations, their quality and operations have never wavered. I'm not usually a hummus fan, but ooooiiieee that was the best hummus I've ever had! So good I immediately wanted to write a review. The homemade sourdough has my family craving more. My son declared "This is my new favorite sourdough". I would love to give 5 stars but I do have a few concerns.... A lot of tables were not clean, so that gave us limited choices for seating. The service was oddly slow. It looked like all but one (one on register) of the employees were very focused on online orders more than the customer in front of them. It would've been smarter if some of them were put on online/to-go orders and the others were dedicated to in-store line orders, it seriously felt like online order was their sole priority, we didn't feel very welcome. We didn't even get a "Sorry for the delay, We'll be with you in a minute"; We were just left staring blankly at the people in the back wondering when they'd acknowledge us. I could hear huff and puff sighs behind us from the rest of the line as my family did our best to remain kind and patient but I did think in my head how odd it all was. Now onto the food and portions: The portions were really small. Three pieces of skinny broccolini on my Mediterranean protein plate, 5 pieces would've been nice. Cut chicken thigh portion was kid size palm, not adult size palm. Same thing with my tomato cucumber salad, I would've loved more. So if this place can keep the dining area cleaner, be quicker to greet and serve, and give adults their correct serving portion I would give 5 stars. But again, bravo on the sourdough and hummus! Been to this location a few times and wish it was the one I could go to for lunch (go to the one downtown). Feels like the staff is more friendly and engaging at this location which is nice. I love the buffalo chicken salad - I prefer extra chicken (big surprise) and swap out the ranch with olive oil (because I put olive oil on EVERYTHING) mix in the buffalo sauce and you have one healthy bowl of deliciousness. I pick up my bowls to go so can't really speak of the vibe there however I would say that they do keep it pretty clean even in the facilities. Got around to trying Leaf and Grain yesterday and loved the bowl I got! I thought their menu would be a little more extensive than it was, but all their options were very appealing. We arrived about 5pm on a Saturday, looking for a vegetarian friendly restaurant. I ordered a Vietnamese chicken dish, which was tasty, but two of the ingredients were missing... which seems odd to run out near dinner time on a Saturday. My wife and daughter decided to split a bowl of vege boost, but again it was short on the ingredients.... 90% kale and maybe 10% other stuff. The kale was difficult to eat --it was quite hard, and what they received was very, very different from the image on the menu. Finally, the place just seemed dirty. It was not particularly busy, but the entire bowl prep area had not been cleaned in a while... bits of food everywhere (this was not a sanitary issue, but it left a bad impression). Additionally several of the vegetables looked a bit old.. for example the bean sprouts were beginning to turn brown, and some greens were beginning to wilt. While customers bus their own tables, several were obviously used, but not wiped. I'm leaving two stats as my food was good... just a bit lacking some ingredients, and there are numerous vege options. I think with a bit better crew training it could be quite good, it just seemed odd to not be very busy, but not have all ingredients prepped and not have clean stations. read more

While they have preselected grain bowls to choose from, you can easily substitute things (or leave things out) because they prepare it in front of you once you order! I ordered the Good Greek and subbed the grilled chicken for tofu since I'm vegetarian, and I was so pleased with how it tasted!! My husband got the Pollo Laredo and also subbed his chicken for tofu.. When I asked him how it was, he said "so much better than I expected! I really like it". A healthy dinner that's also delicious? A real win-win, if you ask me! Leaf & Grain is my favorite salad place in Houston, hands down. The OG location at Houston Center downtown was my go-to Leaf & Grain -- went there at least once a week because their salads were so good. Only downfall was I only had access to it when I went into the office and during regular business hours. THANK GOODNESS for THIS neighborhood location because now I can get it outside of those hours. Plus they have warm bowls and shakes, plus ample seating. My go-to salad is The Common Table (sub in quinoa instead of rice) -- it is delicious. You can order online and pick up very conveniently. Customer service is top notch at either location and all their ingredients appear fresh. Repeat customer present for sure! PS: They also have a kids menu at this location AND there was a sign touting that kids eat free all weekend with the purchase of an entree! I've been to leaf and grain twice now. I found this place through Yelp when searching for salad and bowls. My and my husband wanted to go somewhere healthy and new (not salata). When I checked into Yelp I realized there was a 25% off order deal! Always happy about deals! As a vegetarian I wanted something filling but healthy. I ordered the Alamo since I always like Mexican type of food, I asked them for light dressing and they listened! It was good! I wish it was more rice but def more like a Mexican salad- the dressing was tangy and spicy for me. The second time I went there I ordered the oasis's the falafel salad bowl which was also good wasn't amazing but good. I think leaf and grains is a more affordable salad place compared to salata and you can also somewhat make your salad your own customizing it. My husband loves it so we will definitely be back!
