While visiting London, a friend's recommended Poppie's for the best fish and chips. I'm not really a seafood fan, but decided when in London... I ordered the Regular Cod Fish amd Chips. And I was pleasantly surprised! I was worried that it would taste fishy and I wouldn't be able to eat it. But it didn't at all! However, it did lack flavor. I had to douse it in malt vinegar to add some flavor. The fries (err chips) were good, but nothing exciting either. Overall, it was a fine meal. Came here on a recommendation from my middle brother. The place looks like it was left over from the 70's, complete with funky old school phones and a disco ball The place is in Soho, the gay/theatre part of London and it is well known for their fish and chips. We tried both he cod and the halibut. The cod, while enjoyable was more delicate than the halibut. Halibut was the winner. Service was friend. No wifi but hey, at least you know you will be having a conversation instead of looking intently into each other's phones! read more

Probably not the best place to get fish and chips. We had spent the day shopping and had just left Primark on Oxford street and I was tired and desperately wanted to sit and eat. I found it very underwhelming and it cost £40. Which was too expensive for fish and chip. We later found out we could have gotten it cheaper on the street which we did find but Oxford st is so long and we didn't want to walk all the way back to the stand. Lol The customer service wasn't great either. The only good thing was we were able to explore the Soho neighborhood which was very beautiful and full of character. Last night in London and I still hadn't gotten Fish & Chips! So after a night of a few cocktails we were happy to find Poppies for some late night food. We were seated right away and shortly after placed our order, a round of Fish & Chips for everybody! When the plates came they looked sad and boring - though I don't know how you would make fried fish looking appetizing but it just looked like it was going to be a disappointment. The cod fish was hot and too heavily battered for my taste but still flakey and moist inside. The chips however tasted as sad as they looked plus they weren't hot, not even warm so they probably had been sitting under a lamp for a bit. Additionally both the fish & the chips tasted very bland and didn't have any seasoning with them. Decent spot to try fish and chips. I heard a lot of good things about Poppie's but I thought the fish and chips were okay. The fish had a nice crispy batter, though it wasn't very flavorful. The fries had no crunch on the outside, and were pretty dry. It was a filling meal but underwhelming. The restaurant itself has a 70s theme and has old school music playing, and there are a lot of interesting memorabilia to look at on the walls. It is definitely a tourist spot, but I think they provide a fun experience while having a meal. The service was a little slow but the servers were polite. I have nothing but great things to say about this Poppie's location (fortunately). My husband and I were pretty jet lagged on the day we arrived in London, but really wanted to have a traditional meal to kickoff our vacation. We came to this Poppie's and were seated right away. The decor was adorable 80s fluorescent lights and diner tables and chairs. My husband was going to order the chicken, but our server was charming and said, "You can't come to a fish and chips restaurant and not eat fish and chips!" We completely agreed, so my husband ordered the Haddock and I had the Cod. For drinks, we enjoyed the cider and a cream soda before our food arrived. The food took about 10mins to come out and the sever was incredibly attentive. The Cod was a bit lighter than the Haddock (a bit fishier) and the chips were crispy and not dripping with grease. All in all, highly recommend it. Thank you Poppie's team! My only side note is that if you use the restroom do not throw any toilet paper in the toilet, it won't flush! read more

I ordered three drinks and two meals, and appetizers. How is that not enough food for three people? One of the meals is a large size and could be shared. It hasn't been a problem at any other restaurant in London. I decided to read some of the reviews and see if anyone else had an experience like mine, and it seems like they have and or maybe they are racist. I hate that they allow businesses to be able to do this. I'm glad I left because I refused to order more food. I found a nice place not too far and within walking distance of Hobson's Fish and chips. When visiting, I was stunned by the entire 1950s vibe of the restaurant and all of its vintage decor. However, the place was extremely crowded with similarly minded people visiting due to the reviews and there was little to no space for people taking out food. I ordered haddock fish and chips, a steak pie, mushy peas, and calamari. The haddock and chips were extremely bland even when we added salt and malt vinegar. The steak pie was probably the best menu item I ordered, with an extremely flaky crust and flavorful meat. The mushy peas were somewhat good as well, and they added some flavor to the fish and chips. Overall, I was satisfied with the restaurant and most of the food I ordered. However, I believe that serving sauce with the fish and chips and adding some condiments as well would make Poppie's one of the best chippies in London. read more

You should see how many reviews this place has on Google! Most of those reviews seem to be from local Brits, who seem to favour Google over Yelp. Unfortunately, this place, despite all of its history, is simply beloved and a bit hyped, IMO. Service was great and the Saturday night DJ was a welcome touch. The house Pale Ale was a good value at around £4. Never had whitebait before, but we thought that these were too fishy and didn't finish them. Unfortunately, the actual fish & chips was a bit of a let-down and third place among the three places I tried the dish in the UK, and mushy peas must be ordered at additional cost. Even the McMullen's-owned White Swan had better fish & chips for less money. Liked that they had a Kids Menu and that the Fish & Chips was a reduced portion of the kids version, real and not frozen. It can't get any better than trying Fish & Chips at Poppies on your first day in London! We knew we had to try Fish & Chips at a local London eatery. There is no better place to try it then at Poppies. The fish & chips platter was big enough for two people to share (if you are not starving or just want to have small bites). We decided to go with Haddock (instead of Cod) as Haddock is not common in the NY/NJ area. Service was OK. It took about 5 minutes for the fish & chips to come out. The waiters however, were all super busy and did not come over to our table as often to check on service, but we were just fine with our food. The fish & chips was delicious. You get an entire battered haddock. The fish had a nice crispy batter. The fish wasn't overly fried and was flaky and flavorful. The chips, although freshly made, were OK. Came to this location for our first ever London Fish and Chips. It was surprising to see that the inside was almost like an American diner but sure I guess. I also heard afterwards that Poppies won an award for their food so it was good that we were able to try this. We came at around 8pm and were seated immediately. So this is suppose to be one of the best spots to get fish n chips while in London. It's super centrally located in a great area so we figured we would try it. The line was literally out the building waiting for a table. We gave our name and within a few minutes we were being seated. Don't get discouraged by the line... it's fast. Once inside tables are packed with people and waiters running around. Our server was extremely nice. They do have a full liquor bar too. My boyfriend and I grabbed some drinks first. The menu is pretty straight forward... fish n chips. They have two different size plates. I suggest getting the bigger one because it's great. You can also choose from two different kinds of fish. We got both to split and decide which we like better. We were going to be exploring all day and I didn't want to get to full and uncomfortable so I was nervous at first. We didn't understand because it's just the cut of the fish, it did not make sense to us how they can have regular size but ran out of large. The restaurant is small and crowded, and since I was a party of one I had a tiny table backed up against the stairwell. The fish looked enormous on the plate and I immediately thought I'd ordered too much food, but it was light and flavorful, not oily or heavy. I can't speak to other famous fish and chips places in London, but for our first plate ever it was a great place to go. We got there earlier for dinner but by the time we left the place was buzzin' so it's clearly a good spot. My husband and I both got their regular plate of fish and chips. What I loved about the dish compared to the American version that I despise, the batter didn't overwhelm the dish so it didn't taste just like a bunch of overly fried fish. The fish was flaky and flavorful and the fries were a great compliment. The service was just alright. The staff were kind of indifferent and slow at times (our drinks came well after the food). It could be a symptom of how busy it gets. However, this place has a reputation for being one of the better fish and chips places in London.
