Another quick trip to the east coast for a doctor's appointment. Then off to breakfast at Poppies, our favorite restaurant for breakfast. The place is completed remodeled with new owners. Megan was our server extraordinaire and brought me a large cup of delicious brewed coffee. We both got the breakfast special which included a drink. I had three scrambled eggs, grits and a toasted sesame bagel. Dave had the same with pancakes instead of the bagel. The grits were brought out in a shissel along with brown sugar and raisins. Dave loves that-I prefer savory butter lol! Then the eggs were a very large portion and done just right. I swear I had a bagel that was on steroids lol! It was the biggest bagel that I have ever seen. David got two large pancakes along with warmed syrup! Who could ask for anything more. Megan said the bagels were baked right there! The price was a modest $9.99! A bargain considering we usually pay over $3.00 a cup of coffee here. It makes me sad that I left my home there 12 years ago! Party of eight for the Holiday. Place was empty at 5:30, but picked up a little by the time we left. Ordered the turkey dinner. Top slice of turkey looked off color, and dry. Tried the next slice, dry and no flavor. It seemed like the turkey was microwaved. I had to return the meal, ordered a burger, and that was good. My wife ordered a brisket, very lean. It was dry as expected, but had no flavor. She orders the brisket at all the other Jewish deli's in the area and all have flavor, although very dry when ordered extra lean. The others all ordered cold sandwiches and were fine with their meals. The only comments were the rye bread looked packaged from a market, not your typical Jewish Rye, but they still enjoyed their sandwich. Came here for breakfast with a group of four. The new ownership did a very nice job updating the restaurant. Our server rarely came around to check on us, and our food took a long time to come out. We never received the butter, or the coffee and iced tea refills we asked for, which made us feel neglected throughout our meal, and it was a frustrating experience. Prices were also higher than many other places in the area and none of us felt it was worth it. We had an average meal with poor service, so next time we will go somewhere else. We did take home a few items from the bakery which were delicious, so for this reason they earned the third star. read more

Poppies is an institution in Palm Beach County, anther deli with Jewish comfort food in a busy shopping center at the corner of Military & Linton Blvd. The crowd here was mostly 80+ years old and at least 50 pounds heavier than we are. Forty of us met for a Friday lunch. There was free parking in the lot in front. The menu was massive, some ordered sandwiches, omelettes, salads, soups & seafood. My husband shared a huge pastrami sandwich on rye with fries. Alyson waited on a group efficiently in a private back corner of the tremendous & very busy deli. Everything was delicious, portions were massive, plates were platters, prices were a little high and everyone enjoyed. We were given our individual checks on the table and we got in a long line to pay. The cashier was also answering the phone, and she was very busy. We could've saved 3% if we paid in cash. I had gyro meat 2 over easy eggs sliced tomatoes and rye bread - needed a box to take home as I was so full could not finish it all. Son had omelet with pastrami salami corned beef with sides of hash browns and pancakes and bagel of which all was eaten. Coffee was good and refilled regularly. It's been years since I have been back to Poppies. We were in the neighborhood and decided to go for brunch. We shared the appetizing/fish platter. Here they give you a choice of 3 fish. Sable and sturgeon are an up charge. We went with 2 x baked salmon, sturgeon, and a side of Nova. The bagels were large and had great texture and flavor. The veg on the platter (lettuce, cucumbers, green peppers, tomatoes) were all fresh and crisp. The whole restaurant was bright and clean. Our server was new, but attentive. The nice thing about a deli like Poppies is that the menu is so extensive. Of course, that creates a gastronomic conundrum: What should I have for dinner? The obvious answer (for me) is.... breakfast! Yes, I ordered the eggs entree, which comes with two sides. Although the potato pancake sounded tempting, I had a bagel and a fruit cup. I asked the server if the bagels were still fresh and she said they are made every day and are quite large. Didn't exactly answer my question. Unfortunately, the answer is "no", the bagels aren't particularly fresh in the evening. In fact, my cinnamon raisin bagel was overdone and had some nearly-burnt spots on the outside. I didn't send it back because I had already sent back a toasted one that I hadn't ordered. The eggs, prepared omelet style as I had requested, and the fruit cup were both okay. Neither were stand-out items in any way. A couple of people in our group ordered roast beef sandwiches after confirming with the server that the roast beef was rare. They were satisfied with their sandwiches. The accompanying french fries were good although not superb. One person ordered the souvlaki platter with marinated chicken chunks, a Greek salad, pita bread and french fries. It was a large portion and delicious. More than half accompanied her home in a to-go bag. I also ordered a potato knish to go, which my husband thoroughly enjoyed at home. The server was very nice and stopped by our table frequently to ensure we had everything we needed. The decor was pleasant and bright, but the harsh fluorescent overhead lights did not create a particularly warm atmosphere. Would I go back to Poppies? Sure! It's great having Poppies Restaurant nearby... a good spot for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner... but I mainly like it from time to time for takeout around lunchtime... typically a sandwich. The deli meats like pastrami and corned beef are very good. As you can see, they have all the appetizing, cakes, etc. you'd find in a NY deli. Today I ordered a Chicken Salad Wrap as last time I was there the Chicken Salad looked good... and it was very good. A tad on the dry side, so was glad I had some Cole Slaw at home. Had a deli sandwich compromised of corned beef and pastrami. The sandwich was okay. I chose the potato pancakes side, but it only came with one potato pancake. For a combo sandwich, it had a decent amount of product. I asked for a garlic pickle, but it came with a half sour pickle. I was disappointed with the waiter. My memories of Poppies from 3-4 years ago were less than satisfactory. However, on hearing that the restaurant did a make over a year or so ago we decided to return. Physically the venue is now bright, clean, cheerful and well staffed. It is the closest thing to a New York diner that you find in South Florida. A VERY extensive menu. It you want waffles or eggs for dinner at 8:00 PM no problem. As an alternative you can opt for steak, lamb chops, deli, etc. It should be noted however that the prices at Poppies have really crept up. A similar dinner at Ruven's (also in Delray Beach) which also includes a beverage, dessert, and appetizer can be had for less money. Note: Ruven's does not have breakfast options Not fine dining, but if you don't have reservations elsewhere on a Saturday night you can probably get in here at the last minute. Poppies has become a busy luncheon and breakfast destination as well. Bottom line: Service and ambiance superior to Ruven's, but Ruven's is the better value. read more

It holds a favored spot in Mrs. K.'s memories from when we lived in Delray two decades ago so we absolutely had to return for a breakfast while we're spending time visiting family in Palm Beach County. On a weekday morning, there was no waiting and there were only a couple of customers. We had fabulous service from our waiter who was kind, funny, attentive and helpful. We ordered the "Smoked Fish Platter for Two" choosing nova, whitefish and baked salmon. It came with ALL the extras including fresh tomatoes, red onions, green peppers, cucumbers plus bagels and cream cheese. Once we'd started, I realized we were missing the capers but we were okay without them. The fish was fantastic and there was a LOT of it. On the way out, we picked up some extra bagels and some pastries. We got six more breakfasts from the leftovers (three each) so it was very much worth it. I have been here once and had a turkey-LT with fries that I thought was very good. The service was great and fast, everyone was very friendly. The inside was pretty large so lots of seating. Last visit it looked like a 70's throwback to your great grandmama's living room.Today, it is bright, stylish, clean and appealing, BRAVO! The staff is friendly and helpful. The serve my favorite sausages which is harder to come by every passing year. My Wife had a bagel which was good and the bacon so so. The rye toast was cut like an old time door stop and was criminally tiny! It looked like it was derived from a rye baguette. I stopped into Poppies after the gym this week, hoping to get a nice sandwich, maybe a salad with it. It was easy to find, even though hits a bit unassuming in the middle of a trip mall. I walked into the restaurant and I did like the initial vibe. It felt like a restaurant stuck in about 1990. The dining area had plenty of customers quietly eating. It was a older crowd. I think most younger people don't seek out a sit down deli. there wasn't anyone at the sandwich counter when I first walked up. when a fella did come around I waived the lady behind me to go as I couldn't figure out what to get. most things seemed wrapped up, and what I could see wasn't appetizing. I checked photos on line and reviews but that didn't help much. In the end I got an assortment of Rugelach. They were pretty good, and the lady helping me was nice. While the content if the sandwich maybe fine the "rye" bread is paper thin and the bottom layer had turned to mush when picked up prior to even trying to apply mustard. We have been coming to Poppies in Delray for breakfast for years. It has always been a reliable, no nonsense spot, especially for classic Jewish breakfast dishes. Unfortunately, today may have been the visit that finally broke the streak. We were seated and then sat for over 20 minutes without so much as a greeting. We eventually had to flag someone down, who told us that the server assigned to our station was late and had not shown up yet. That may explain the delay, but it does not excuse the complete lack of communication. We ordered our usual matzoh brie, something they have made countless times. What arrived barely resembled it. If there were four tiny pieces of matzoh in the entire dish, that would be generous. It looked like scrambled eggs with a few matzoh crumbs tossed in as an afterthought. Either the recipe has changed or the person making it has never seen matzoh brie before. Either way, it was deeply disappointing. To their credit, they did remove one of the matzoh bries from the check, and that gesture was appreciated. Still, when a place you have supported for years drops the ball on both service and food in the same visit, it gives you pause. Breakfast spots live and die on consistency. We LOVE the new updated Poppies. The food and staff are so accommodating, friendly and professional. It's gone from being just a deli to having amazing international dishes as well. Breakfast, lunch or dinner...the menu offers just about everything. (And the bakery will have you drooling!) Husband had New Zealand Lamb Chops 4-$38. "Such a deal" and cooked to perfection. As good if not better than the fancy establishments he orders them from and MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE. The vegetable medley was fresh and also cooked perfectly. This is going to be a short review but still wanted to share my experience. We went for lunch mid week and the place was pretty busy. We only had about a 15 minute wait which wasn't bad at all. I had the soup and sandwich combo (matzoh ball soup and half a pastrami sandwich) and my friend had the potato pancakes platter. We both really enjoyed our meals. The soup had plenty of chicken and noodles in it just the way I like it. The cole slaw and half pickle that came with my meal were delicious also. Our server was really nice, he checked on us through the meal but wasn't overbearing about it. The place is really clean. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was having to wait in line in order to pay our bill but it wasn't a deal breaker as to whether I'll return or not. I always loved Poppy deli and recommended it to everyone as my favorite deli. In the last year, it has been purchased by a new owner and the place looks beautiful. The service is still very good. The prices have risen considerably. The problem is the food has deteriorated and it's not what it used to be. I ordered a roast beef sandwich and what I got was dry and overcooked. I also ordered the rice pudding. I had to send it back not only did the whipped cream taste like it was not real whipped cream, but the rice pudding was like rubber, and it was dry and inedible. read more
