This place is great. Nice concept and theme of California vibes, without it looking tacky or gimmicky. I've only gone for lunch and I've tried the steak frites and the pita sandwich on separate visits. That pita portion is intimidating, but delicious. Menu is diverse and everything looks delcious! Poppy & Claro wants to bring a unique café/restaurant experience in DTSJ that will give diners everything they need from their morning cup of Joe to a fancy dinner, P&C will have you covered. Their executive chef, Christopher Littman, worked at NYC's three Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park, and has promised a menu of "...NorCal-sourced dishes that will change seasonally." The Good: * Interior is absolutely stunning and beautifully designed. *Service was terrific all-around *QR code ordering, which I love, quite frankly. But, as Carissa K stated, maybe a bit odd for an establishment that's trying to come off a bit hoity-toity. *Pricing is very reasonable *Coffee, beer, wine, and liquor--if you're thirsty, they got what you need. *Great location in the heart of DTSJ *Both of our dishes were really fantastic, and everything was cooked perfectly from the steak to the salmon. Their plates are very colorful and beautiful to the eyes, as well as the taste buds. The Meh: *The QR code menu didn't give us an option to ask how we'd like our proteins cooked (especially the steak!), but fortunately it all worked out. Wow!!! What a fabulous place. Choosing to come here made our girly happy hour extra amazing! I looked for happy hour in downtown San Jose to celebrate an occasion with my friend. I noticed this spot seemed new and the menu had great prices. It's attached to an office building and there was some construction outside the entrance. I imagine there is a ton of people during the workday but for happy hour, there was barely anyone there until dinner time. The space looks beautifully, intentionally designed! The colors are warm and inviting. We were greeted at the door and sat down anywhere we wanted. You can order through a QR code on your table, but the bartender came by to place our order and answer questions when there was a technical error. She was the SWEETEST PERSON EVER! She was also working really hard to take care of everyone seated. We didn't catch her name, but it was such a delight talking to her that I genuinely think our experience wouldn't have been the same without her. She let me sample the beers when I had trouble choosing. Someone who I assume was the owner (because of his aura) also came by to chat with us, and he was so sweet too. We got a draft beer ($5), wings, a kouign amann, and the truffle fries. Wings - There were six of them and they came in a decent size! The flavor is delicious. They were oven baked and had a savory flavor that I can't put my finger on, but I recommend them because they were addicting. Fries - I had fries somewhere else the day before this, and they were terribly greasy. This was a redemption! Not greasy at all, perfectly crispy, and flavorful without an overpowering truffle smell nor pool of oil. There was the perfect amount of cheese on it too. The portion was great, not skimpy at all! Kouign amann - Got this for dessert! It was still flaky and not hard yet despite it being late in the day. The middle had an oozing sweet filling that felt indulgent. One of my favorite desserts for sure, and the person handing it to us was super friendly (he also shared our love for this pastry). We stayed here chatting for quite some time and didn't feel rushed. We found the service to be attentive--even exceptional--and the delicious food + gorgeous ambiance just rounds everything out to a 5/5. I'll be back!!! read more

Fun new addition to downtown San Jose! Came on a Friday night for a girls evening and there was plenty of space, no wait. SERVICE. I guess the team is still figuring out some kinks, we weren't really checked up on throughout the night and our server had us repeat our order multiple times. FOOD: Loved the food and drinks here! The trio dip platter is a great starter and the truffle grilled cheese is not to miss. We also ordered the pita sandwich with mushrooms, this was just OK for me but my friends loved it. What a gem of a place and the even better part its in the building I work in- Poppy and Claro is a phenomenal location and a very nice touch to the downtown scene. Issac, Melody, Chef Christopher, EJ, Rin, and Gabby are the nicest folks focusing on the customer and quality. From breakfast to lunch to Happy Hour and then to dinner, this place is a must visit. They have a fully stocked bar and everything is fresh made to order. Full disclosure I have been coming since day and this place is constantly improving and all in a positive way... nothing was negative before, but I can't wait to see what this place has in store a couple months from now to even a year. The little things matter and even something as simple as drip coffee comes with a small side of cream should you need it vs the mass retail locations that just have it sitting out for everyone to use. All beers on draft for five bucks. For food we got wings, which were like a spicy Asian chili Thai sauce, which was delicious. A little sweet a little spicy. The wings were good size and very juicy. We have been wanting to check out this place and we finally got a chance since I had a rare Friday off. Walking in, the space is very impressive. Love the décor. After we were seated, we were told to use the QR code to look at the menu and order. We love that option but it just seems a bit off for this type of establishment. I ordered salmon and John ordered steak--we were not asked how we wanted them cooked. We just had to hope for the best! Luckily, they both came out cooked almost perfectly. My salmon dish was delicious. I felt the prices were pretty reasonable. And the service was good. Before we left, we both had to use the restroom. Turns out they only have one multiple use gender-neutral restroom which means we both went into the restroom at the same time. It was definitely an interesting experience as another gentleman walked in at the same time. I will say the stall doors go to the floor so you have more privacy than the average bathroom. One of new fav spots in DTSJ and very happy they're open Monday - Friday during the work week and when there are weekday Sharks game, but do wish they were open on weekends too! I work nearby and frequently walk nearby, so I was very happy to see a new addition to the area. Another perk is that they're open at 7:30am so I been there a few times to pick up a matcha. It's a nice spot for happy hour, lunch, dinner, drinks, or any meal at anytime. I have enjoyed their salmon and turkey sandwiches and love their bread. Pepperoni pizza is good, and can get it for $10 during HH. The fries and salads are nice sides too. TBH everything I have tried has been delicious. Good portion size and reasonable price. Stopped by for happy hour! We got the $8 truffle parmesan fries and $10 margherita pizza to share & we each got a $10 Poppy's featured cocktail (classic margarita). Honestly it was surprisingly pretty solid. Not the best happy hour deals, but not bad considering the items tasted fresh. The restaurant itself was tucked away in a corner, so it was a bit hard to find the entrance at first. The ambiance was nice, clean, and modern. How have you not been to Poppy & Claro already? It's a coffee shop, a restaurant, and a bar. Usually when a place tries to do too many things, it doesn't get any of the right -- in this case Poppy & Clara nails all three. Get the brown butter caramel latte. It comes a little too sweet for me, so I ask for less syrup but it's unusual and really good. Time to try something other than chain store PSL. Pair the latte with a morning smash sando: eggs + cheddar on a hearty brioche. Or, if you want something lighter and sweeter, there's an assortment of Manresa pastries. For lunch, I vouch for the salmon club. Nicely seasoned and grilled salmon on levain sourdough bread. Messy (three napkins!) but delicious. You could also try the truffled grilled cheese. In my opinion, truffles make anything better and this three cheese gooeyness is awesome. Full bar, decent selection of wins, both at reasonable downtown prices. Happy hour 3-6. Hubs and I were looking for something new/different and we definitely found it here! Between the two of us, we split the wings, salad, and pizza and enjoyed all of it. The wings were good with the sauce (it looked so good that hubs grabbed them before I could snap a pic!). The salad was surprisingly different with the crispy seaweed - it was a nice touch that added a bit of texture and umami. The pizza was also unexpectedly tasty too; the wood fired crust was done nicely and the salami (?) was unique and tasty. While I was here for lunch, I had to try and judge their coffees. The lattes were well made and yay for serving Sightglass coffee. I wish I still worked in DTSJ as I could definitely see myself grabbing coffee and pastries here. I loved my recent dining experience at Poppy & Claro... the food and drinks (we got fun mocktails) were delicious, but the star of the show was the friendly service! Each person we interacted with here had the best vibes. We ordered a Margherita pizza, the fried green beans, and the leek soup! I would probably skip the green beans next time because there was a bit more batter than I expected, but I would definitely get a pizza and soup again. Their interior was so cute, and simply aesthetically pleasing (I'm a huge advocate for cute work spaces, and this was definitely meeting my standards!) I ordered the Brown Butter Caramel Latte and the Claro Latte, and the person taking my order was so nice and explained their default milk (it's oat milk) and was patient during the entire process. Hands down the best customer service ever! Finally, the coffee was amazing! It was not too sweet, and it had a lot of depth in its flavor (especially the brown butter latte!) -Location: DTSJ; conveniently located in the same building as the public parking garage across from Mezcal. Parking (on Fri. ~3 pm for ~1.5h) was $10. I forgot to ask if the restaurant validates; would be nice to know. -Space/ Ambiance: cute, bright, colorful, modern, clean. Good for when you want a nice sit-down restaurant but not too upscale. Comfortable, inviting, non-pretentious. Good for a date night. Good for private parties. -Service: friendly staff. I entered through the inside of the building and didn't see a host stand but staff at the bar greeted us right away and let us know we could sit anywhere. (It was not busy at the time.) Waiter was relatively attentive (maybe would have wanted him to check on us just a little bit more often, especially since it wasn't very busy/ actually pretty slow at the time we went). Another two sweet waitresses also checked on us (one when our waiter was on break and another just to check that we weren't too hot with the window blinds up and the sun on us). Overall good service. -Drinks: decent selection of signature, low-proof, and spirit free cocktail/mocktail options. We got the Golden Hour and Amber Bloom (spirit free) and enjoyed it, although the ginger taste in the Amber Bloom was a bit stronger than we anticipated. I ordered a Matcha Spritz to go and the lemon in that was also stronger than I expected. -Food: We ordered the Steak Frites, Spicy Vodka Campanelle, and Beyond Strawberries & Cream. We didn't quite like the herb béarnaise on the Steak Frites but we asked if it would be ok to get something else on the side and received a side of garlic aioli that was very good. The broccolini that came with the Steak Frites was seasoned well, flavorful, a little bit spicy. My son was impressed with his dish and very much enjoyed it. The Spicy Vodka Campanelle wasn't very spicy but still good--although I wouldn't say I was "impressed," as my son was with his plate. We both loved the dessert, though. We ordered the Beyond Strawberries & Cream. It was fun and creative (strawberries three diff ways), tasty, balanced, the perfect level of sweetness (sweet but not overly so). -Price: it was 2 of us and we ordered the items mentioned above and, from what I remember, the total was ~$120 (including a 20% tip). I believe prices are included on the menu posted to their website, to get a more accurate idea of price. IMO, I think the portions, quality, service, ambiance, etc. were such that I didn't feel like the price was too disproportionate to what we were receiving. - Overall: We enjoyed our food and time there, and we did not think any of the points of (hopefully constructive) criticism above warranted lowering our rating down from 5 stars. This place opening up on the floor level of our office building is what my co workers and I have been waiting for, for months. Finally came in to have lunch and it was overall a positive experience and great addition to downtown. You can seat yourself and order off the QR code on the table. It gives you the option do either and individual order it table order and the individual option is perfect for going in groups but everyone wants to pay for their own stuff. I got the house Arnold Palmer which was really good and refreshing, the turkey club and the lemon pistachio olive oil cake. The sandwich comes with either fries or a salad, I obviously chose fries which were delicious. For the price I feel like the sandwich lacked some heft but the bread they use is delicious. The cake is where they lost me, though it was moist and delicious, it was basically a slice of lemon pound cake with some pistachios on top and for $8 I feel like it was definitely not worth it. They do have a diverse menu and also offer breakfast so I will definitely be back to try more things and even bring my laptop down and work there and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. read more

What a lovely find. Went out for a late lunch and enjoyed a few shareable dishes: the SHRIMP & SCALLOP CORNMEAL BITES sounded...strange (they looked like mini corn dogs) but were absolutely delicious; the CLARO CAULI was great (maybe just a touch more sauce); we didn't realize till after the fact our shoestring French fries was missing the garlic aioli sauce. We also split a wonderful beet salad. The highlight was our cocktails. Our initial drinks were a little sweet ( they had pandan in them) but our bartender EJ (pretty sure that was his name) modified our second round to perfection. Well, I'm saddened to not provide higher marks for this new downtown SJ restaurant. In this instance, there are a couple areas that our group of 6 experienced at a lunch that may very well not have us visit again for a while. First and foremost was the service and kitchen/bar flow. It was downright spotty and poor. Our server was pleasant enough--but that's not enough. Short coming was attentiveness and "reading the room". She took an order for a very nice bottle of wine and it never showed up. After nearly 20 minutes, another team member came by and said that they were out of the wine and might we want a different bottle. We picked another and it was another 10 min before the bottle dropped. We then ordered our lunch. We had ordered three appetizers at the same time we ordered the initial bottle of unavailable wine (about 30 minutes prior). No appetizers by the time the late bottle of alternative wine arrived. We asked about them and about 5 minutes later the appetizers came out. But no share plates, cutlery or napkins. They were dropped after we asked for them. And that's another issue--paper napkins. Should be cloth. The appetizers were pretty good when finally delivered which meant to me that they weren't sitting around--so either the initial order didn't get in when it was taken OR the kitchen was backed up. About 15 minutes after our appetizers were dropped, our meals were dropped--BUT NOT ALL. We had two hot plates drop first including a grilled cheese and soup combo and the smash burger plate. Both were good. Then about 6 minutes later three more lunch plates dropped (this time the salads, only one with a hot protein). Of course, after about a minute, we directed the two with hot lunches to "EAT". We had one person still missing their lunch. We had to ask about it and it came thereafter rather quickly within about 2 more minutes--it was a kind of a wrap sandwich. By the time it arrived tho, the two hot lunches were fully eaten. The salads were tasty but generally small in portion but looked and tasted pretty good. The grilled chicken on one of the salads was tasty yet super small--4 oz likely or less. In any event, the bill was just over $300 for our lunches and it was an expensive, drawn out experience, disjointed and somewhat amateur hour experience. There are alternatives, not many, but a few alternatives in downtown SJ. I do hope P&C gets their act together and hope that on another visit in the future, we'll have a better experience. Nice space and want to see it succeed, but details matter. read more

The best part of our experience was Rin, our Waitress/Bartender! She was amazing. Rin took care of our needs, gave suggestions, and was hilarious. She even opened the door for my 93 year old mom when she walked out! I loved how Rin explained the food and drink options! The salmon and pizza were delicious! And the veggies were SUPER fresh! Every thing on the menu has been incredibly tasty. I've eaten here 5 times. I've had the steak frites-it was not dry at all and had the perfect cook. I've also had the salmon, I couldn't believe it was so tender, I'm so used to it being over cooked. The chicken with toum was also cooked perfectly, not dry at all.
