If I was rating this restaurant based on atmosphere then I'd give it a 10/10. The super laid back, open air dining area reminded my family and I of one of our favorite restaurants in Pensacola, Florida that is right on the beach. However, that is where the good news ends. We ordered a chips and salsa appetizer for the kids - and the chips were stale. Fortunately, the avocado shrimp cocktail that my husband and I shared was pretty good. It then took over an hour for us to get our entrees. We felt invisible- our waitress would walk past us to another table and not stop to see if we needed anything or give us an update on why our food was taking so long. Finally, when the restaurant was close to closing for the night, the chef came out and apologized and said my husbands salmon dinner had been dropped on the floor and they had to restart it. He wanted to know if it was ok to go ahead and send out everyone else's food. We were all tired and ready to go to the hotel so we agreed. My son got a cheeseburger which he loved. My daughter ordered crab legs and I ordered a hamburger steak with grilled broccoli on the side. My food came out COLD. And my daughter said that the crab legs were too spicy for her so we traded meals. Once we were almost done eating my husband received his food - which was delicious - but we were just done with the place and ready to go. read more

So the service was great, their Mushroom Cheese Dip was great. On their menu is an entree called "Cajun Boiled Shrimp Snow Crab and Kielbasa." There is nothing Cajun about this boil. It is just unseasoned crab and shrimp. The kielbasa was good, but even the potatoes and corn were unseasoned entirely. Just boiled. I complained to the waiter and he just kind of chuckled and said "yeah, it's not like normal crab." I don't know what that meant, because it was exactly like normal crab. It was the normalist, most unseasoned crab and shrimp I've ever had. The shrimp was cold, which is normally not a big deal but....it was a boil....the shrimp should be hot. For a place that values itself as a Cajun restaurant it's so strange to me that putting some cajun seasoning in the water with the boil is not a given. This left me sad and wanting more. I can boil shrimp and crab with no seasoning. It's very easy. Very underwhelmed for the $85 I payed for 2 of these boils. I wish the waiter had been more interested in making me happy with my experience as well. He didn't seem to understand and maybe just chalked it up to taste. I'm only giving it two stars because he was on the money with the drinks and the rest of the staff was all overly kind. I fell in love with Pop's Place the moment I walked in. The atmosphere has a down home comfortable backyard feel, with wonderful music selections and quirky, zany decorations that keep you asking questions about their origin. The food is a wonderful mix of Cajun/seafood/steakhouse/home kitchen with everything on the menu from 32oz porterhouse steaks, bacon-wrapped filets, boudin, gumbo, crawfish grits (my favorite and everyone I know as well), salmon, shrimp, mahimahi, crablegs, chicken sandwiches, all-you-can-eat fried fish, and the list goes on and on! The service is always relatively slow but with good cold beer, all the sports' channels over head, and great company you'll really never want to leave. The complimentary bread pudding is phenomenal and if you're lucky, towards the end of the night you could maybe get a hold of their "redneck beignets." Another very special quirk is the sweet old one-eyed cat Erby, who "runs this place" that can sometimes be spotted lounging on the patios. Well, first of all, it's not a BBQ restaurant. It's an old building with a great outdoor (enclosed in winter) area. Not fancy at all. But hey, go there to eat, not to be impressed by looks. We live in Dallas and have a home in Texarkana we get to every month or so. Never come without going to Pop's. Love the fried fish, Mahi Mahi, steaks are unbelievable. Quality is as good as any fine restaurant in Dallas. Waitresses are super, always remember us from our last visit and stay to catch up on what is going on with us. Sweet girls. Ok, I enjoy a good steak but I need it to be cooked. On the menu at Pop's there is a picture of all the different ways to have a steak cooked, ie, rare to well done. I generally do not order steak because I am tired of hearing, oh the chef doesn't like to cook steak well done. Well, when the chef eats My steak he can have it cooked any way he wants. . At Pop's I can order my well done steak and it is juicy and tasty and no one makes a comment on how I ordered it. Pop's Place is a wonderful dining experience where owners come by your table and ask how everything tastes. ( and they really want to know!) I tried several things on the menu and I have enjoyed everything I have tried. At the end of the meal you get a complimentary dessert of bread pudding that is delicious and just the right amount. POPS Place..Close it down till they clean it up! .Antiques, worn funky decor and crazy things on the wall can create charm and atmosphere but there is no excuse for downright... FILTH! FILTH! FILTH! That can't be overlooked! The "pee green" bathrooms.. there's no hot or warm water! The hot water faucet isn't even connected! The bathrooms are FILTHY, the walls, the floors, the sink, the toilet, they are all FILTHY and DISGUSTING! How does the help wash there hands? Maybe they use the catch bucket under the sink that catches the leaking cold water from the faucet? Maybe the guys just pee in the sink, cause the bathrooms are too narrow to around in? The wiring and plug for the wall fan that hung above the table was coated with a 1/2 inch of DIRT, DUST and GREASE! Just waiting to fall into my my gumbo? The low hung fluorescent shop light fixture above me was coated with dirt and dust. The ragged edges of the linoleum tile and cement floor looked like the owners attempted to rip up the tile but decided it was going to take some effort, time and money so they quit trying and left it undone. Looked liked the floor must have got moped with a mop DIRTIER than the floor! I don't understand how anyone could own or manage such downright... FILTH! FILTH! FILTH! This place is a disgrace! Owners/management should be ashamed to open the doors to such a FILTHY, DIRTY, DISGUSTING place. How could Health Officials allow it? Corruption? Blindness? read more
