Cozy and charming cafe. My mom also really enjoyed her coffee, and she doesn't like to try new places but this has become her go to. She had the Denver Omelette and she LOVED it. I had the Low Cal Breakfast with waffles and the WAFFLES were DELICIOUS. My breakfast isn't complete without something sweet and the waffles were small, sweet and fluffy. This place was a pleasant surprise! We were sat in the outdoor patio area, but there was plenty of shade and a nice breeze coming through. The owners were super super nice and the woman smiled the whole time we were there. I want to order their waffle combo but unfortunately their waffle machine was broken. So my mother and I had their pancake combo. I honestly really liked it! The pancakes were better than Denny's (lol) and nothing was too greasy-just perfect. Speaking of perfect, THAT BACON OMG. The bacon was cooked to a perfect crisp. Over all across the board, I'd say flavor wise everything was about 3/4 stars. But, their phenomenal customer service bumped it up to a 5. My coffee cup was never empty and we were constantly checked on, and not in that annoying way when your in the middle of a conversation or chewing your food. You can tell the owner, a bubbly Cantonese lady, loves her job and her patrons. Hash = 5/5 perfectly cooked California Eggs Benedict = 1/5 (eggs were overcooked and hollandaise sauce was funky) Beef fajita omelet = 4/5 (well flavored but on the saltier side) Cajun shrimp and sausage skillet = 5/5 highly recommended Berry crepe = 5/5 For being a hole in the wall, this place is spectacular. Atmosphere: Casual. House like diner, smalls, booth seating. Ordered Items: Apple crepes, Chorizo scrambler, breakfast bruschetta (I think that's what its called) and peach pie with ice cream. Popular Café is a cute hole in the wall, you wouldn't expect this mom and pop stop to be soo great but it is. The whole experience was great. They have a ton of choices to choose from. We went for breakfast and received exceptional service along with great food! The portions are good sized, along with great prices, I don't think anything is over $10. I really like this place! Simple, tasty, quaint, and inexpensive. It's like a hole in the wall but it has a nice diner feel inside and you can tell they try to make it feel like home with plants, frames/pictures, and a tv. Food is not the best I've ever tasted but they have a large menu and what I've tried is pretty tasty! I always get the southern breakfast with hash browns or home fried potatoes. Their home fried potatoes are seasoned well and the onions and green peppers they cook it with give it a great taste! Grits are good, usually just add a little salt to make it perfect. The Cajun sausage is super delicious and well cooked. Biscuits are small but still have a good taste. They also have good coffee! The service is definitely good too. They are not usually busy in the mornings on the weekends when I go but even when I went last time and the were a bit busy, they never let my coffee cup go empty without asking me if I wanted a refill. Best part? You can order so much for two people and still stay under or around 20$. Definitely one of my go to spots for breakfast. read more

But they did have some pros and I'll start with that. Pros: Great prices Very good variety Good customer service Sunny-side up eggs were done nicely Cons: Too much variety can lead to Mediocre food Biscuits and gravy (really small biscuits and pasty, floury gravy) Waffles and fruit compote (the waffle was not crisp and the fruit was not fresh) Slow service I don't want to be too harsh because they were hospitable and I was pleased overall with their customer service but I just did not enjoy the food. There are some really good breakfast spots in the area so I doubt I'll ever be back here for breakfast. But with their prices, who knows, maybe one day I'll try lunch. read more

We love it here. Whether inside or out, the service and food is really good. We only eat poultry and fish so our choices are "limited" but they have a huge variety and always done well. One of their specialties is the smaller omelette which we frequently get. It's perfect because it's like a crepe but better! Last week I got the full size with tons of veges and turkey and it was still crepe thin. Family run and that makes it more fun. Also they remember us. Really great little breakfast place. I had seen it many times, but never gotten a chance to try it. The hash browns were so good. They were super crispy, but the inside was soft. I tried eggs Benedict for the first time there too. Since I had never had it, I can't really compare it to any other eggs Benedict, but I will say that it was really good. Cousin had the cowboy breakfast. The bacon looked really good and the pancakes were very fluffy. He really liked it. Waitress was really sweet and very attentive. I'm writing another review because there has been some negative reviews by some that I think is ridiculous.. One saying they get their food in frozen food section at stater bros. What a ridiculous and ignorant statement. Restaurants get their food shipped in and in large quantities.. One said the vegetables taste frozen (would it have been better from a can?) Or do you prefer those other chain restaurants that boil in the bag with measured portioned sized? About the gravy, flour is commonly use to make home made gravy. (which is made home made) One says the food was mediocre.. I strongly disagree... First off everyone has different taste. Second, its not the four seasons.. Some would eat McDonalds and be fine with it.. For cheaper, yes cheaper, you can get a better meal. In the back you can see specials some for under $5.00 if you come in before 11:00. I've been there many times and the food is very good.. I've had the vegi burger and the patty was home made and was amazing. (You won't get that at Cocos, Dennys, or Carrows etc..) When you go during the week day its just two people. Wife who serves and husband who cooks.. I will tell you the service and food is better than some cafes filled with cooks and servers.. A bonus, their food is not greasy.. I know for a fact if your no happy, the people there will be happy to accommodate, you by redoing your order.. They aim to please and take pride in serving good food and very low prices.. Thats the one thing everyone seems to agree on. (The low prices) The place is good place for seniors who are on a fixed income. First, since Yelp! doesn't let you give 1/2 stars, let me say that Popular Cafe deserves 3 1/2 stars. This place delivered a solid, tasty breakfast and I recommend that if you're in the Montclair area looking for a breakfast spot, you give this place a try. Service is wonderful, my wife and I never had our coffee reach the half way point, we didn't have to wait forever for our breakfast and they were attentive to any requests we made for salsa, sour cream, changes to our order, etc. Portion size is good, and they certainly didn't scrimp w/ the ingredients in the omelets we ordered. I had the Ultimate and my wife went w/ the Shrimp Avocado and I would say the Shrimp Avocado was the winner at the table. Overall, both were good, not out of this world good, but tasty. Our only complaint is the biscuits and gravy, they need a little work for sure. By far the best breakfast establishment for miles and miles. The omelets are served on hash browns (ingenious!) and will not disappoint. Breakfast burgers and eggs any style are also not to be missed. Simply put, you will not go wrong with anything you try here, especially when you add some of that tasty homemade hot sauce.
