Popular is an underrated Peruvian paradise located on the first floor of the Public Hotel. It features a cantina surrounded by palm leaf foliage that serves some of the best pisco sours in the city. The service is exceptional. We met Ricardo when he was a waiter two years ago and he was the most vivacious waiter we've ever met. This time he welcomed us as the restaurant manager and recognized us right away. He took care of us with a free round of their divine pisco sours featuring pisco using 100% quebranta grapes from Peru. Standouts on their menu included the ceviche clasico with sweet potato and snapper in a tangy leche de tigre as well as the tender lomo saltado with roasted shallots and smashed potatoes. Birthday Dinner! Amazingggggggggg!!!! I had the best birthday dinner at Popular on a Thursday evening. Our waiter was an absolute JOY! He was so pleasant, helpful, lively and knowledgeable. As for our table spread we had oysters, jumbo shrimp tails, chicken & avocado causa, duck & rice, sticky prawns and lomo saltado. We enjoyed everything! Our entrees were all generous portions, enough so that we were all able to share dishes. Our waiter was amazing, continually checking in on us and assuring our champagne glasses stayed full & champagne chilled. There's a super vibey rooftop right upstairs. If I could give ZERO stars I would!!! Came here for my 2:30 PM reservation on Saturday afternoon yesterday August 16,2025 and arrived at 2:38PM at the restaurant. There's no receptionist except for a male restaurant staff . We notified him of our 2:30pm reservation, he went inside the restaurant and came back stating "Oh I'm sorry, we can't accommodate you because the last seating is 2:30pm, you arrived at 2:38pm, you're late" I can call the manager for you" I didn't speak to the manager because if you're the manager of the restaurant, you should PERSONALLY go to the desk and explain WHY you can't accommodate them, not just any of your staff. We arrived 8 MINUTES LATE!!!! Restaurants have a 15 minutes window for customers. Probably this restaurant don't have that. Absolutely disappointed since this is my birthday treat for my best friend. And for a restaurant that is located inside a hotel which is supposed to be customer service focused, please review your policies. DON'T ACCEPT 2:30PM RESERVATIONS then. Doesn't make sense if you'll just drive away your customers if they're late a few minutes. It wasn't crowded surprisingly for 7:30pm dinner hour. We were seated and we both ordered the Lomo Saltado. It was definitely a bigger portion than I expected. This trendy Peruvian restaurant is located on the first floor of the Public Hotel. The decor is gorgeous. Even though the plants are fake, they create an inviting, tropical aesthetic. Our server was super sweet and charming. Initially he was very attentive, but once our entrees arrived, he was a little hard to flag down and he definitely tried to upsell us on a few things. For an appetizer, we shared the crispy oyster mushrooms. The dish came with three large mushrooms so it was enough for our group of six to share. The mushrooms were incredibly crunchy and succulent. They came with a thick layer of sauce that was tangy and savory. For my main, I had the quinoa stir fry. It was a generous portion size. The dish was tasty and the quinoa was very buttery but I would've enjoyed just a tiny bit more flavor. I asked for their house hot sauce. It packed a very spicy kick and perfectly completed the dish. The food was fine, small portioned and pricey. Service was a bit disappointing. For a restaurant of this price, the waiter kept bugging us in the beginning about drinks. We starting feeling uncomfortable saying we were fine with just water. We had a birthday so we brought a cake. Most places would cut the cake for free. I guess it was not the case for here. That's fine, but initially the waiter said $10 and we were like okay yeah. When our bill came, we were charged $60 for cutting the cake. They then changed their statement to saying it was $10 per person. This was not communicated early, but also what store even does this. We went for a friend's birthday and was really disappointed. Brunch Food - my friends and I ordered the ceviche, chicken egg sandwich, eggs Benedict and French toast. One of my most interesting dining experiences to date. Mi madre was in town and staying at the Public, so she asked if I wanted to meet her for dinner. Easy call. We walk in, and I immediately feel like I'm back in LA with a few "influencers" taking pictures all over the gaff. No shade, just facts. They immediately served this little Peruvian nuts that were a great little app. We ordered the Ceviche, Sea bass, the bib lettuce, and a steak. The Ceviche was otherworldly, quite frankly some of the best I have ever had in these beautiful 27 years. The bib lettuce was also phenomenal, would recommend it to everybody. The sea bass however, came out cold. I will never lie to my fellow yelpers and to be really honest I thought it was supposed to be served chilled. Mother asks the waiter "Is this supposed to be cold?" I put my head in my hands and internally was saying "mom we look so dumb even asking this OBVIOUSLY it's supposed to be cold." I was wrong. It was supposed to be served hot smh. So that sucked but they took it off the bill. I get it, sh*t happens. BUT, after a significant amount of time waiting for our steak, the pièce de résistance, one of the managers comes out with her tail between her legs. "I'm sorry but we forgot to put the steak order in I'm not really sure what happened, but it does take about 30-40 minutes to cook..." Pain. I personally think the Terrace at the Edition Hotel is the most beautiful restaurant in the city, so I figured Popular had to have the same design team. Yup, Ian Schrager designed both--and it shows. Every photo is a postcard. As with the Terrace, the food and drink here are pricey but great quality. Try the Ceviche Clasico to benchmark against Peru's most famous dish, or the equally delicious--though smaller-portioned--Ceviche Nikkei for some of that Japanese fusion. The Sticky Prawns were also delicious. But dessert and drinks are where they truly shine. The Chirimoya (sic) Meringue was the stuff of my South American dreams, all creamy custardy as cherimoya should be. And the Lucuma Truffles were the next best thing to finding this rare South American fruit wholesale, especially when encased in classic dark chocolate (the way chocolate was meant to be, Europeans). As for drinks, the Pisco Sour is done to perfection and might just be the best one I've had in this city. Service was friendly and attentive, but painfully slow at parts. We had reservations for 8 pm but we were late and they accommodated to us, which was very helpful. However, the server we had was kind of rude and was very pushy. However, he did inform someone in my group that the lomo saltado has oyster sauce on it and she is allergic so they are very accommodating to people with food allergies. The food was really good, we ordered oysters, the steak, shrimp fried rice and the aueropuerto. My friends steak came cold and they went back to the kitchen and cooked it for her and made sure it was to her liking. Other than the food being cold and the lomo soltado containing oyster sauce, I have no complaints. however, this place is on the pricier side so be prepared for a fat bill. I'd come back here for a date, as the scene was more romantic/coupleish. Many couples were on a date here. Overall, this place was really nice, decorations were really aesthetic and added to the jungle vibe, and the food was good, our server was a little pushy but still accommodating to our friend with a seafood allergy. The fish was incredibly fresh but the dishes lacked bold flavors. I'd also recommend avoiding the prawns. Popular is in the PUBLIC hotel which is just as trendy as the restaurant! The escalators at the entrance are really cool (especially after a few drinks)! Just look at the pictures and you'll see that you're transported to the jungle upon entry. For a plant girlie like me, it's pure heaven. I absolutely loved the ambiance of the whole place. The lomo saltado meal is soooo delicious. Every single ingredient complimented each other in the dish, and I would order this again in a heartbeat. The sauce in the ceviche was so good I literally licked the bowl. You also get complimentary corn that is very unique - sort of like half-popped popcorn but not as rock hard. Their indoor greenery makes up for the lack of green that can be found in the city... it feels like an urban jungle with its dimly lit yet warm toned space. For 2, we ordered the East coast oyster (aji amarillo, parmesan), Lomo Saltado (filet mignon, vidalia onions, vine ripe tomatoes, chili-soy) and Wood fired shrimp rice (shallots, escabeche, aji amarillo, mayonnaise). I would highly recommend the oyster: so refreshing for a summer day but also with flavours that is so new. Parmesan makes it sound heavy, but you just shuck it like you would any other oyster! Because it was quite dark where we sat, when the Lomo Saltado came, I couldn't really tell what was in it, so it can be quite an adventuring bitng into it. Honestly, the onions were pleasantly surprising as you bite into it, pairing perfectly with the filet mignon - also not too much on the tastebuds. I will say that the wood fired shrimp rice was great, though I might have personally enjoyed it more if the shrimp was a little more seasoned - just me though! Otherwise, you would have seen us scrape every last bit of the plate.
