Super dissapointing. We were very looking forward to it, but Its a hotel restaurant and shows it. Expensive, small portions, but most importantly shockingly bad Peruvian and our family is Peruvian, having eaten all over the world at Peruvian hot spots. It was so bad we left after the apetizers and skipped the entree's. This place was embaressing and wont last and shouldn't. FOOD: Terrible. The ceviche was one of the worst that have ever tried, from fancy spots to regular spots, it had no flavor, spice, tiger milk and had a strange taste packed with mashed up hard corn that had no reason being in there in abundance. The calamari was all bread, not calamari, tiny, dry, flavorless and Trader Joe's frozen food level- actually worse. We didn't eat it. We had a 3rd appetizer that was even worse, we didn't even touch it and sent it back. I can't even remember what it was cause I was blocking it out of my memory from the trauma. The pisco sour drinks, which are really hard to mess up, was so bad and far worse than those that I make (which are pretty good, but not hot spot level) was a major eye roll. AMBIANCE: Weird, very lush green, super dark cheap hotel vibe, but not stylish or trendy . SERVICE: Amazing! Our waiter was fantastic, funny, attentive, very understanding and sympathetic to our reaction. Feel like he's seen dissapointment before. The staff here was the best thing about this place and wished they were working at another place. In fact I recommneded they do just that. read more

Date night approved!!!!! Can't wait to go back!. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the public hotel. We had reservations, were seated right away. The food was so good, I was left dreaming about their fried rice. I can't remember the exact name but it was so good. It's Peruvian style fried rice. We also had the lomo Saltado and octopus! Popular is located in the PUBLIC hotel. It's got a very upclass, fancy vibe, with really nice decor and ambiance to the whole place. Service is great and they have a great variety of cocktails, with their speciality being the Pisco bar. We did family style and shared the oysters, ceviche, lomo saltado, short rib and scallops. Oysters, scallops, and lomo saltado were the best dishes in my opinion. The lomo saltado comes with baked potatoes, as opposed to French fries which is what I've had in the past. The chili butter in the scallop is so good. Overall, great place and good choice if you're looking for a nice, fancy spot for a different cuisine. All the dishes were amazing but the desert stole the show. It's a beautiful venue to say the least. Thoughtfully decorated with enough spacing to feel comfortable. Most ceviche just squire some like and call it a day, but this had a sour taste that didn't overwhelm other components of the dish, still allowing the octopus to shine. The yuca, prepared two ways was unique but I felt it was overpriced for what you got. Moving onto the market fish and filet mignonette. The filet upon first bite was good but ordinary. But I had missed an important component which was the sauce. When I took another bite with the sauce, I was in heaven. That was the perfect sauce for the filet mignon. The fish with the crispy skin and tender flesh balance out steak dish. Land and sea coming together. I was still kind of hungry at this point so we ordered desert and I was glad we did. The presentation was beautiful and full on f comped flavors all coming together. There were so many elements in the desert and all it came together in harmony. Our whole party was impressed. Props to the deserts chef. I pondered a lot about the cost...to determine if price matched value. I do feel it's on the expensive side, but well worth your money all things considered. You know it's been a good experience when you've started to plan your return before paying the check. To have a menu this varied and expansive and hit every note is quite a feat, and to do it immediately upon entering the restaurant scene is even more impressive. Not that I needed any convincing -- Pisco and ceviche are some of my favorite things and the combination of the two would definitely be in the running for my last meal on earth. Popular does both very well and will leave you wishing you went with a larger party simply to try as many items on the menu as possible. Came here at 8pm on a Saturday night. As others have mentioned, Popular is bursting at the seams with plants. The vibe is lush, bright and oh so trendy. I felt uplifted and energized just being led to our seats. Not long after sitting down, we were given some complimentary puffed crackers and crispy Incan corn, both yummy. In true Peruvian fashion, Popular's cocktail menu is all about the Pisco. For those of you who have only been introduced to Pisco through Pisco sours, congratulations: that is a wonderful place to start. However, the spirit is versatile and made in several different ways (quebranta comes from a specific type of grape, while acholado is a blend of several Peruvian grape varieties), which affects the tasting notes. If you love a Pisco sour and are looking for something similar but elevated, Popular has a drink on the menu -- sadly not listed online -- that I highly recommend (it's not the one called "popular pisco sour, but the other drink featuring egg white"). Additionally, we tried the Ponche 1890 (quebranta, lemon, spiced pineapple agave -- shaken and served over a block of ice), the Por Las Puras (quebranta, nigori sake, cucumber, lime -- served over crushed ice tiki style) and the Sandia Salada (acholado, fresh watermelon, mint & lemongrass tea, turmeric salt -- shaked and served up in a coupe, turmeric salt rim). Classic Peruvian flavors and ingredients with highly sophisticated technique and presentation. Most dishes on the menu are meant for sharing, so please, for me, take advantage of this. You'll want to try as much as you can. Get at least one ceviche (I regret not ordering two) and sample one or two plates from each menu category. Eats, below: Ceviche Nikkei, ahi tuna, miso, aji panca, shiso: A+ This was our favorite dish of the night. Super fresh fish bathed in the aji panca was delicate yet super flavorful due to the umami or the miso and shiso. Definitely not your typical ceviche, but that is certainly not a bad thing. Royal Trumpet Anticucho, nasturtium: A Seriously delicious and earthy, reminded me of the way I've seen octopus presented but vegetarian friendly. Bibb Lettuce, avocado, quinoa, pomegranate, goat cheese: A A big ole salad, nice if you want to get your greens in, loved the crispy quinoa and the dressing was delightful. Roasted Baby Carrots, cumin, yogurt: A-/A This was less thrilling than the other dishes though still totally solid. I've just had variations of this dish before, cumin and yogurt often accompanying carrots in Middle Eastern cuisines as well. I've been here when it was another restaurant and I want to say they made this look really cute with all the foliage surrounding this space. We sat at the tiny table and next to someone who has appeared on television and he was hurting for some attention. Thirsty as hell. Moving on, we shared the following items: Pisco Sour - really good, I have yet to have a bad one. Bloody Mary - the beet threw me off but it tasted not beety at all. It didn't have as much body as I would have preferred, but tasted good. Skirt Steak, roasted pepper chimichurri, pistachio, fried egg - the meat was super tender and love love love the flavour, but the where is the rest of it? This dish was described by our waiter as hearty. To me, hearty means its super filling and will keep you full for awhile. Nopes. There was like 4 slices of beef here. Sticky Prawns, chow mein, toasted peanuts - again, good, but it was missing 75% of it. The manager cleared our table and kid around how we must didn't like our food since we both had clear plates. Hellos, if we didn't clear our plates we would be much more hungry than we were. We left unsatisfied and still hungry and that's how small the portions were and not what was expected. Okay WOW, what a hidden gem! Went here for brunch and it was almost empty, which is crazy because it was SO cute inside. I had the kale salad (delicious and unique with an incredible dressing, just wish there was more of it). I also wish we could add protein to the salad but I just had a side of chicken sausage. It is a bit pricy but food and drinks are very good. The CEVICHE CLASICO was pretty authentic and the WOOD FIRED SHRIMP RICE will remind you a bit to a paella with some lemon. The POPULAR PISCO SOUR is a great cocktail as well as the CARACINO and the CHICHA 2022, but I would go with the first. I was excited to hear a new Peruvian restaurant was opening up in Manhattan. I have been a few times and will come back! This place is great for a celebration with friends or a nice date night dinner. The first time I came here was for a surprise dinner for my boyfriend's birthday. SOOOOOO good! We started off with a pisco drink. I got the one with pineapple and it was so good. I could have drank multiple. We then got the ceviche nikkei. The fish was so fresh and juicy. The sauce was so flavorful and the dish was beautifully presented. We also got the Royal trumpet vegetable which is was very good as well. The scallops are a must when you come here! You only get two but they very large. They melt in your mouth and are almost buttery. I don't even like scallops but it was highly recommend so I went for it. Please try it! Then we moved on to the short rib which was exactly the same as the scallops. So tender and just melts in your mouth. We also got a dish with pork belly and it wasn't very good. My friend boxed it up and took it to her husband. All and all this place was fantastic. The service was great and al the food was very flavorful. The only thing to note is the portions are small and the food is pretty pricey so be prepared for that. Also we stopped at the little coffee shop inside the hotel and grabbed a Togo wine. Came here for my best friends birthday and wow the food was really great. The vibe was perfect, very beautiful decor and plants all around made me feel like I was in a up scale jungle restaurant. As I walked in I realized I had been here for large dinner, once before, and really enjoyed the food. This time I came here for brunch and I don't know if it's because my tastes have changed, the menu changed, or I just like their brunch menu less than their dinner menu, but I thought it was less impressive. We ordered the ahi oysters from the civiche menu which was a weird texture with the ahi sauce. Since the oyster were small you couldn't actually tell if you were eating anything other than ahi sauce. Also, he did not explain anything to us regarding how the menu works nor did he make any suggestions. I expected more. For appetizers we got the oysters, which were yummy. For dinner we had the bib lettuce salad. Presentation was nice but it was still just a salad. I initially ordered the sticky prawns and sautéed veggies, but couldn't have either one because I have a sesame oil allergy. We ended up ordering the yuca, asparagus, scallops and the market fish which I believe was Thai fish. I am not a huge yuca fan, but I know it was not good. No flavor even with the sauce, and it seemed undercooked. The asparagus was decent. The Thai fish was okay too. Very small portion. The scallops were the best thing besides the oysters, and while they were very tasty there were only 2 and they weren't that big. For drinks we had the pisco sour and the infalible. Both were very good. For dessert we had the cherimoya meringue. It wasn't horrible but I wouldn't get it again. I might be inclined to try this place again for drinks but there are so many better food options in the city. I didn't see the bill, but I am sure we spent about $200, only to be quite hungry by the time we got back to the hotel. read more

For appetizers, we ordered two types of ceviche--clásico and Nikkei. Both were incredible, making it that much harder to share. For our entrees, we ordered lomo saltado and an order mussels. To say they were delicious would be a disservice. This was some of the best food we have ever eaten. The lomo, which used filet mignon, featured a perfect marinade, exquisitely cooked potatoes, and even tomatoes that were to die for. Just be aware that the restaurant is very formal, no matter the time of day. Great food & drinks! The raw oysters were so delicious we had to order a second round. I haven't had a pisco in such a long time, it was great to try the popular pisco, pisco picoso and a pisco take on an espresso martini. The lomo saltado was to die for, literally melted in your mouth. As for our waitress, I wish I remembered her name because she was so welcoming & awesome. We shared a few laughs with her. We had the raw oysters, both ceviches on the menu, the bib lettuce (so good too!), yuca, lomo saltado and the scallops (another crowd favorite). We also had the lucama (I believe that's what it's called) for dessert, which was also delicious. The vibe in there was so great. The minute you walk in you no longer feel like you're in Manhattan. I also arrived early and had a drink at the bar during happy hour; drinks at happy hour were $10, once you sit down they're about $18-$20 a drink. Our bill came out to about $600 - now for this price I wish the portions of food were bigger, which is why we had to order more food, thus higher bill. Enjoyed the food a lot, very fresh flavors, decor was fantastic love the copious amount of greenery that was in there and the live music. The wait staff was fantastic and very attentive My first issue was with the hostess at the front desk, she was generally disinterested in speaking with us and this was further confirmed when she came to seat other groups she was very friendly and asking questions of the patrons and making suggestions for dishes to order. She did not have that energy for my partner and I. Even as we exited the restaurant there was no have farewell greeting just a stare as we left. not sure what her problem was but she definitely left a sour taste for the rest of the meal and experience at public. My second issue was with the bathroom because public is on the main floor of a hotel they share a bathroom with the rest of the hotel guests who are coming and going. It is very awkward to have to leave the restaurant to go to the rest room, I had a negative interaction in the restroom with presumably a guest of the hotel, maybe not. All in all I enjoyed my time with my partner and the food but I do not think we will be back any time soon read more

What a great experience! The food was excellent and great portions. I ordered the Lomo Saltado and it was cooked to perfection. It paired beautifully with the Otoño cocktail.
