This will be my 2nd summer working 5 minutes away from here. Their pizza is amazing, and the workers are super friendly! Because I'll be working in a kosher kitchen until October, I won't be able to have dairy and meat in the same meal. However, I can order a pizza with every meat item and cheese, and bring it back to my cabin, lol! The crust is crisp, even the next day, reheated! Excellent Buffalo chicken pizza and stuffed bread. Crust and sauce are really good on the pizzas. We ordered the Verdura (veggie combo) and enjoyed the leftovers as much as eating it for dinner. There are a lot of pizza options around, but give Portofino a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

This was my first time visiting Portofino Pizzeria. The restaurant is extremely small and is not meant for dine in eating, although there are two or three tables. The menu was pretty typical for a pizzeria but I did find a tuna salad that sounded really good and it's not something I would usually see on a pizzeria menu. The man behind the counter was very nice and didn't mind my questions when I was asking what was in the salad. I ordered my salad with no cheese and a side of house dressing. The salad was so fresh and so delicious that I didn't even need to open the dressing. I scarffed my salad and was ffuuulllll! Since I did dine in, one of the cooks came around and flicked on the tv for me and even asked me if the volume was ok. That was the first time I've ever been taken into consideration as far as a restaurant tv is concerned. There are other pizza places in this area but I definitely suggest skipping them completely and choose Portofino. read more

This place is my jam. My family orders delivery from Portofino several times a month, and it's always super good. I do recommend trying their pies "lightly baked" because otherwise they can tend to be a little darker than I like them. This pizza here is pretty good, AND they deliver! I like the shrimp scampi pizza a lot, and my family loves the pepperoni and Yankee Clipper pizza. Their Caesar salad (with grilled chicken) is also pretty good. 5 words Sauce Eggplant Pizza Desert Delivery We all know sauce is key to any Italian eatery, and they have that down x 10. We have not had a homemade marinara sauce like this locally in years. Therefore, the pizza is quite delicious, and that is no small accomplishment in a area known for the best Pizza in the US. However....I can count the times I have had really good eggplant on the CT shoreline, with the exception of my Gramma's and cousins of course! We all know It's usually mushy, over cooked, undercooked, dried, over done, drowning in sauce, too much or too little cheese. Can't hold up to bread or stand alone..... My extended family owns 2 successful restaurants that have been in business since the late 70's, not to mention nationally known and celebrated cook books. Eggplant is the definitive test for Italian cooking. We gave it a try, and we were in shock ! Get the eggplant parm at this little gem of a place. I am still craving it. It was moist, more of a batter than bread, dipped to perfection! Sliced thin, with ample thick mootz and just the right amount of sauce to show case it's quality. It would be good on its own with a little Romano cheese right out of the pan! It needs nothing .......truly, an eat at Grandma's house experience. Who knew this no hype place you usually drive by without noticing, would be such a stand out, exactly what the shoreline needed, and wanted, especially for great take out! The following week I had a conversation with my Cuz, who is also raving about this place and its eggplant! We started laughing, because it's such a rare thing to find. How we found this place! My husband and I had to find something quick before a show, we were near a generic strip mall in Madison, ( were folks still appreciate white chewy "Wonder Bread". We entered with low expectations, and thought, hey, we need to make the show in 30 minutes, it will do. As we entered the small immaculate place, we were greeted by friendly owners. The first thing I noticed was Italian cannoli pie in the glass display, along with a variety of stuffed homemade breads, Italian Pastry etc. ! Surprise Suprise, not typical and totally unexpected! Hmmmm the owners get what people want, especially for delivery. So we decide, its a good sign, let's take a chance on the eggplant! We split an eggplant parm sub....it knocked us out! My husband mumbled pizza we need to try the pizza right now. He ran to the counter, eyes glazed over, and got a small cheese pizza..again TKO! Where the heck are we? How did we not know this great little place existed? I then pointed to the cannoli pie..Ohhh home made goodness! In closing.... We only made half the show, and let me tell you, it was worth every bite! Note: The menu has substantial variety, they deliver almost everywhere, and have great home made deserts and breads. Who can ask for more. This is our new go to, great for last minute guests or large gatherings were delivery rules! You can eat there as we did for convenience. Because it's more of a take out, it's kid friendly for sure, with tiny garlic knots to fit tiny hands. Let's place a future bet... If Portofino remains consistent on all levels, (easier said than done ) It has the potential to reach landmark status, like a few of the New Haven greats. I saw a review on the patch about this place and, being addicted to pizza, decided to give them a try. I am so glad that I did because this is simply the best pizza place in the area. And they deliver! Try the garlic knots which are truly spectacular. There are several good pizza places in Madison but this one has risen to the top of our list. Love the garlic knots. We always get the Rustica, super delish. They are always super busy, though the small dining room is almost always empty. I guess Madison is more of a delivery/pickup kind of town. read more

I've been going to Portofino's for many years and this is my first Yelp Review. It's high time Portofino's knows about my and my family's ooo's and ah's every single time we bite into their fabulous perfecto pizza! I'm not Italian however having grown up in Hamden, CT, I'm well acquainted with all the pizzerias in the New Haven County. I was weaned on Venice Apizza [no longer there], Modern, Sally's and Pepe's. I've eaten Grand Apizza when it only existed on Grand Ave and several other Grand's that have recently cropped up. They are ALL excellent pizzas! I'd have to include Madison's Bradley & Wall's pizza too, which is right up there with the big pizzerias. And here's the but, Portofino's Pizza is, in my opinion, and that of everyone who I encourage to try it, the absolute supreme pie. From the tender yet crusty dough, the ample and just sweet enough, non-acidic sauce, to the sweet layer of mozzarella their pizza pie hits every note you could ask for. A few years ago, out of curiosity my family went to 5 other local and successful pizzerias and ordered a plain cheese pizza from each one to have our own mini pizza taste-off. We judged the crust, sauce and cheese, texture and flavor. It was a small sampling of the pizzas on offer on the shoreline but as we suspected none could rival Portofino's. Bradley & Wall's was a runner-up. LOL. Do yourself a favor, try Portofino's garlic knots too, eat'em the next day or freeze them--they are outstanding! read more

Since new ownership took over, it has been in a steady decline. I would always order buff chick pizzas and i have gotten three from there since the new owners came in. Each one has been worse and worse. Also, while home spring break, myself and a friend ordered a margarita pizza (large) which was 27 dollars completely outrageous. Chicken was bland, pizza as a whole was tasteless. word of advice to owners who buy small time food eateries, don't change anything because what was working before you bought it, is what made the money. read more
